Mario Vargas Llosa, a former candidate for the presidency of Peru, is better placed than most novelists to write about the machinations of Latin American politics. In The Feast of the Goat he offers a vivid re-creation of the Dominican Republic during the final days of General Rafael Trujillo's insidious and evil regime. Told from several viewpoints, the book has three distinctive, alternating strands. There is Urania Cabral, the daughter of Trujillo's disgraced secretary of state, who has returned to Santo Domingo after more than 30 years. Now a successful New York lawyer, Urania has never forgiven her aging and paralyzed father, Agustín, for literally sacrificing her to the carnal despot in the hope of regaining his political post. Flipping back to May of 1961, there is a group of assassins, all equally scarred by Trujillo, waiting to gun the Generalissimo down. Finally there is an astonishing portrait of Trujillo--the Goat--and his grotesque coterie. Llosa depicts Trujillo as a villain of Shakespearean proportions. He is a preening, macho dandy who equates his own virility with the nation's health. An admirer of Hitler "not for his ideas but for the way he wore a uniform" (fittingly he equips his secret police force with a fleet of black Volkswagen Beetles), Trujillo even has his own Himler in Colonel Abbes Garcia, a vicious torturer with a predilection for the occult.

As the novel edges toward Trujillo's inevitable murder, Urania's story gets a bit lost in the action; the remaining narratives however, are rarely short of mesmerizing. Trujillo's death unleashes a new order, but not the one expected by the conspirators. Enslaved by the soul of the dead chief, neither they nor the Trujillo family--who embark on a hideous spree of bloody reprisals--are able to fill the void. Llosa has them all skillfully outmaneuvered by the puppet-president Joaquín Belaguer, a former poet who is the very antithesis of the machismo Goat. Savage, touching, and bleakly funny, this compelling book gives an all too human face to one of Latin America's most destructive tyrants. --Travis Elborough, Amazon.co.uk

Book Description

Haunted all her life by feelings of terror and emptiness, 49-year-old Urania Cabral returns to her native Dominican Republicand finds herself reliving the events of 1961, when the capital was still called Trujillo City and one old man terrorized a nation of three million. Rafael Trujillo, the depraved ailing dictator whom Dominicans call the Goat, controls his inner circle with a combination of violence and blackmail. In Trujillos gaudy palace, treachery and cowardice have become a way of life. But Trujillos grasp is slipping. There is a conspiracy against him, and a Machiavellian revolution already underway that will have bloody consequences of its own. In this masterpiece of Latin American and world literature, and one of the finest political novels ever written (Bookforum), Mario Vargas Llosa recounts the end of a regime and the birth of a terrible democracy, giving voice to the historical Trujillo and the victims, both innocent and complicit, drawn into his deadly orbit.

5 out of 5 stars The Folly of a Demigod.......2007-06-23

Without doubt, this is the finest biographical fiction ever written. As he stated in a Wall Street Journal interview today, literature is a powerful tool to further the cause of human rights and liberty, and Mr Vargas Llosa's talents are superior in every respect, whether developing the inexorable progress of the parallel plots of the dictator's amoral indulgences, the simple assassins' hopelesssly ambitious revolutionary plot, or the innocent victim's path to the slaughter. Each character is painted with translucent brush strokes, picturing clearly understandable actors in this horrific drama. The story is laced with graphic violence and sex, butr never gratuitously. In the end, Trujillo's arrogant abuse of power, which he believed was granted by God, consumes him ferociously after demeaning his masculinity. The fate of the tyrant is never as severe as deserved.

5 out of 5 stars understated report on a true tyrany.......2007-01-12

This is a magnificent portrayal of one of the most heinous dictatorships ever to arise in the new world. This is not fiction,on the contrary it is a modification of the truth so as not to completly horrify the readers. My grandfather,my father ,two uncles and one aunt were assasinated in the most violent way by the Trujillo regime. Please excuse my outburst. The writing is very good as befits one of latin america's leading writers.Vargas Llosa depicts very well the strugle of a people in there quest for freedom.

5 out of 5 stars Memories of a recent past!.......2006-11-12

From the talented pen of Mario Vargas Llosa, this book received a very warm reception in its moment, The story is narrated in two times; the arrival in of a mysterious woman to visit his father, and the primary plot in those opprobrious times of Leonidas Trujillo, a unscrupulous politician accustomed to enjoy of these well known pleasures but above all by his non dissimulated cynicism with all those who surrounded him and acidic despotism, that eventually will determine and become his nemesis.

A profound reflection about corruption and decadence from the high spheres of the power. Any similarity with another tropical dictator is a mere coincidence.

Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Trujillo the dictator, seen from varying perspectives.......2006-09-24

This is a curious book. It's a novelized look back at Rafael Trujillo, the dictator of the Dominican Republic from the 1930's until the 1960's.

Trujillo ruled largely through fear. He was the contemporary of and precursor to other Latin American dictators. Finally, his brand of rule led to his assassination.

In this novel, Trujillo is seen through the eyes of people close to him or of his inner circle, people who were generally treated badly.

One is the psychologically damaged daughter of a Trujillo-era Senator, a man disgraced by the old dictator; the others are military plotters of Trujillo's assassination.

Vargas Llosa has written a curious book - a book which jumps from one set of characters to another, and changes voices as it does. At times, the book seems to have a disjointed quality, yet it is interesting for its look back at a corrupt society and how that society came to its end.

4 out of 5 stars Quality inventive journalism, prolix to a fault.......2006-06-26

The story of a manipulative dictator is told here from both sides, showing us the terror and the stability that a man like Trujillo (or even Saddam Hussein or Josef Stalin) brings to a nation with fundamental fractures in its culture and people. Vargas Llosa introduces his characters and the topic so subtly that it seems to grow around the reader, marking a path for descent. Insights about government and people abound. While all of it is well written, there doesn't need to be as much of it as there is, and it doesn't need to be as strikingly "emotional" (translation: obvious). Any more of that and it would become a coffee table book for hand-wringing pill cases. As it is however, it is well-written and an engrossing exploration of this topic without the usual moralizing that makes such books as tedious as a root canal.

    ·Bankruptcy Reform Act
    ·Fair Credit Reporting Act

4 out of 5 stars Good book to read when you are considering your options.......2007-05-17

My husband and I had already filed for bankruptcy when I came across this book, so a lot of the advice given about contemplating bankruptcy didn't apply to us. However, her explanation of the bankruptcy process really helped us understand what we were getting into (and out of). I would definitely recommend this book to a reader who doesn't know what to do with their financial situation.

4 out of 5 stars Great Legal Information.......2004-11-30

There are three great books on the market today and I say don't shop around any more. The two best bankruptcy books on the market have been written by women. I purchased Peggy Palm's book first and found it very informative and insightful. I'm attempting to the stop foreclosure of my home. I then purchased Tiffany Love's book, surviving financial disasters, to get the bankruptcy forms on CD Rom and then learned that she too filed for bankruptcy and included her legal pleadings. If you want to stop foreclosure, get Ms. Love's book for sure as it is "hands on", but I find myself frequently referring back to the information in Peggy's to gain an additional perceptive. Money Troubles is another great book that provides wonderful information and exceeds the scope of Peggy's book, because it covers everything inside and out of bankruptcy, like Tiffany's book. Which some people I think may find too technical, but if you're doing battle like I am with creditors the information is right on target. All three will cost you less than $100 far less than an attorney's consultation fee. My verdict: Peggy's book for the legal advice, Tiffany's book for insight and roadmap, Money Trouble for everything else even after bankruptcy. The others are crap!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Debtors.......2004-07-20

This book is for anyone contemplating bankruptcy. Peggy Palms does an excellent job of describing, to the debtor, the ins and outs of filing bankruptcy. This is the first book of its kind that helps debtors (not creditors) understand the bankruptcy process without feeling ashamed or embarrassed. I would recommend this book to ANYONE experiencing financial problems. It releived a tremendous amount of stress from my life and gave me hope. Peggy Palms is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars The Bankruptcy Solution.......2003-10-25

Sunday I purchased six books on Bankruptcy, read this one first and didn't bother reading the others. It was so real, truthful, and as we say in the Caribbean, down to earth, connotating a Holistic coverage. This book will help me as I work to fight for bankrutpcy reform in my country. I recommend it anyone facing financial problems or wanting to know more about bankruptcy from the perspective of an experienced, practicing attorney who seems to care about people in trouble.

    5 out of 5 stars A Real Page-Turner..........2003-09-13

If you or anyone you know is considering filing for bankruptcy, "The Bankruptcy Solution" is a must read! It stands out from the few others I have purchased/read because it answers almost every question one may have regarding Chapters 7 and 13. Also, Ms. Palms addresses bankruptcy matters with a no-nonsense, dignfied attitude. Other books make the reader feel shameful about bankruptcy issues, whereas "The Bankruptcy Solution" gives one hope for life after a BK. After reading this page-turner, you will hold your head high. My only regret is that Ms. Palms is unable to represent me(I live across the country from where she practices)!

If I file for bankruptcy... Will I wipe out all of my debts? Probably. And if not all of them, at least most. (See Chapter 3.)
Will I lose my house? If you are up to date on your mortgage payments or can get up to date, you're not likely to lose your house. (See Chapter 4.)
Will I lose my apartment? Not if you're current on your rent. (See Chapter 4.)
Can I keep my car and other property? Most likely. Most people lose no property when they file for bankruptcy. (See Chapter 5.)
Can I keep my credit cards? Probably not--but there's no reason to. (See Chapters 6 and 9.)
Will I lose my job? No. An employer may not fire you solely because you filed for bankruptcy. (See Chapter 7.)
Will I lose custody of my children? No. Divorce judges see a lot of people who file for bankruptcy. (See Chapter 7.)
Will I go to jail? Not unless you commit perjury, defraud the bankruptcy court or commit a similar act. (See Chapter 7.)
Will someone from the bankruptcy court visit my home or business? No. (See Chapter 7.)
Can I move? Yes. (See Chapter 7.)
Can I change jobs? Yes. (See Chapter 7.)
Can I get divorced? Yes. (See Chapter 7.)
Will my friends and neighbors find out? It's unlikely, unless you tell them. (See Chapter 7.)
Is it hard to file? It's about as hard as filing a 1040 long-form tax return. (See Chapter 8.)
Will I be able to get credit in the future? Yes--and more than likely, fairly soon after your bankruptcy case ends. (See Chapter 9.)
Will I be able to rent an apartment in the future? This is the one area in which people sometimes run into problems. But there are steps you can take to help yourself. (See Chapter 9.)
Is bankruptcy even necessary? Not everyone needs to file or should file. An alternative might be the answer. (See Chapter 10.)

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2004-12-30

I read this book (borrowed through the library) not because of financial difficulties, but because I wanted to brush up on some technicalities of bankruptcy. In the past I've had clients take bankruptcy and I've had to deal with the bankrutpcy proceedings. Although I do not currently do this sort of work I expect to enter another profession in the future where knowledge of the bankruptcy law and the individual states exemptions will make my job much easier. This book is an excellent overview of the bankrupcty law and I highly recommend it to anybody who is considering taking bankruptcy or deals with bankruptcy either directly or indirectly in their job.

5 out of 5 stars Bankruptcy - Nolo Press guide .......2004-10-20

There are eleven chapters that cover Chapter 7 and 13 bankruptcies. A bankruptcy is either liquidation (7) or reorganization (11,12,13). They can last from a few months (7) to several years (11). Chapter 12 pertains to a large debt due to a family farm.

The questions and answers are categorized for Chapter 7 and 13, like the trustee and going to court. The meeting of creditors takes place 20-40 days after you file. My meeting took place a few weeks ago. This is a meeting you must attend and have no input into the date and time it takes place.

Filing the papers costs $209 in California. Once they have been filed all creditors must cease to contact you, utilities will not be disconnected if they were going to be, an eviction will be stopped, foreclosures and judgments get an automatic stay. It is mentioned that in some states loss of driver's license happens because of a liability for damages stemming from an automobile accident. The automatic stay will stop this from occurring as well. If you are dependent on the vehicle for family support filing bankruptcy might be the reason to keep your license.

Filing bankruptcy does not stop the enforcement of child support or alimony. The book goes into this topic in various chapters. Federal, Local and State taxes are not discharged through Chapter 7. Student loans are not covered either, although if you can prove hardship a portion might get discharged.

There is a checklist in a box format that covers each chapter. The back cover has a listing of questions referencing which chapter is covering that topic. There are some cartoon sketches in black and white that take reduce the stress level of this process. The index breaks down all the topics.

It is also recommended that your maiden and married names be cited in your papers. The section with questions about how the bankruptcy affects your personal life discuss employment and living. This should not impact your job and there is no reason why they would know about it, unless your wages were being garnished. This will be listed on your credit report and you will need to be diligent to make sure the creditors report this accurately. Filing for bankruptcy has nothing to do with jail, you did not break the law or lose your right to vote.

Bankruptcy: Is it the right solution to your debt problems will help you learn the schedules, how to pick your exemptions and decide if you are using a paralegal, lawyer or doing the forms yourself. This is a great guide to show you all the necessary documents needed to prepare with examples.

The author is a consumer debt expert. At the end of each chapter is a box to remind you that it is time to fill out the questions in the checklist. Businesses cannot file for Chapter 13 bankruptcy. There is also some information for newly married spouses to determine if both should be named in the bankruptcy.

    5 out of 5 stars Great, Fantastic........2002-10-12

This is really a must have. I handled my own chapter 13, start to finish with this one. Even handled the emergency filing to get mean ole nasty pasty creditors that were harassing me intentionally off my case. I was even able to file a complaint with them thru the bankruptcy courts. This book references this, and I called the clerks office, and checked out web sites, and this book gave me the confidence, to file a complaint against these creditors. The interderagatorys are fanstasic. THese really helped me out, at my creditors meetings. I was able to even able to pursue a wage garnishment out of my soon to b X's pay check. This was the only way I was going to keep my stuff. I really enjoyed I must say representing my self. It is really not that hard, and more of u folks out there need to try it. They really don't chew ya up and spit ya out like everyone believes. It was not that stress ful, after everything was filed. Actually, It was nice to bask in the quiteness of the emeregency filing. My phone quit ringing. It was soooo nice. This one belongs rite up there with my bible. It was a thrill I must say to stand in line to file my paper work, schedules, and yes, I even filed a motion.! It was great standing there next to some of my towns high power bankruptcy attorneys. ONly thing, I have to say, when attorneys, start offering free advise, have a pen ready to write. I also learned be nice as pie to the clerks. They are so busy, and swamped with work. U will be glad you had patience. Patience is a virtue on this one as far as filings go. THe creditors meetings went well, I even drafted my own propsals of what I wanted, to happend. I even learned how to contest the amount of my truck, and did so, and requested the interest rate be dropped. I got just what I wanted. It actually was not as a terrible as we are taught in society to think. Oh my she/he file bankruptcy. It was not that bad, and also the bankruptcy court I went to, had a class on how to balance your budget, and it was very informational. Dom't feel bad if you have to do this someday. It happens to the bestest of us. IF you do this is definitely the book you wanna seek. I have compared up to some of the competetions, and I felt this one was the easy one to use. Plainest english. Simplest terms. I didnot feel intimidated at all by this book. This book covered all the bases, and then some. Others books I feel were not as complete as this one was. I researched books and sat down and looked thru them at my local book store. THis one won hands down. I must say, it is flexible, easy to tote with you, easy to put in babys bag, and easy to tote on bike with grocerys, and easy to clean up. I spilled coffee on mine... wipes up great. Later, Betty Hogges. :)

I found this to be a great overview of a complex set of laws. It's broken down by subtitles which makes it easy for the reader to quickly find the most relevant answers. Seems to be written from an objective standpoint, providing the pro's and the con's.

                  5 out of 5 stars bankruptcy facts.......2003-10-03

It appears that very few people really understand the dark side of bankruptcy. Yes, there's a good reason for a bankruptcy law, but it's not a panacea and there are many negative implications that people don't understand. This booklet really helps the reader make a more informed decision, and may help a lot of people avoid making a bad mistake. Bottom line? Only people who simply can never reasonably repay their debt should file bankruptcy. Nothing's free, and there are prices for bankruptcy.
