Collectable.......2007-05-12
Not practical book to carry and to read it while outside, but it is just the way how ALL-IN-ONE book is...However, good to have all his works together...
Magnificent!.......2006-10-13
I wish there was some way to make this large tome more compact, because (if it were possible) I would probably carry it around with me wherever I went! I originally became familiar with his work because Carl Barat and Pete Doherty (band members of The Libertines, a fantastic British band) had mentioned him amongst their favourite authors. I decided to read "The Picture of Dorian Gray". I liked so much that I decided to buy the whole collection of Wilde's plays, poems, and stories.
Perhaps I am biased because I particularly enjoy literature from the 1800s (Edgar Allan Poe, Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain, Lewis Carroll, Edwin A. Abbott), though I must admit that I haven't come across anything similar to Oscar Wilde's work before. Wilde's profound ability of creating rich, imaginative dialogue is especially evident in his plays and his one novel, "The Picture of Dorian Gray". Many of his plays, especially The Importance of Being Earnest, are too fantastic, too purely Victorian in nature to be imaginable as happening in real life. However, I think that it is the underlying fanciful, almost surrealistic quality of much of his stories and poems that make them most interesting. The sheer amount of quotable phrases found in his work is something to really be marvelled at. Not only the dialogue, but the quality of the plot is brilliant as well. "The Picture of Dorian Gray", a tale of a handsome youth's descent into madness and debauchery, is particularly striking. It makes me wonder what other stories Wilde could have produced if his life had not been so tragically short (1854-1900).
Though he might be more well-known for his plays and novel, his first published material was poetry. His poetry, as does his other work, embodies his ideals of aesthetics: "art for art's sake". The articulate, minute description of details which might go unnoticed or seen as obsolete matter a great deal in the aesthetic philosophy, as does the beautification of objects and art in everyday life. Wilde even had a tour of lectures on the aesthetic movement in the United States and Canada in 1882, though his philosophy wasn't well-received by the majority of critics.
Wilde had said that "The House of Pomegranates", one of his collections of fairy-tales, was "intended neither for the British child nor the British public". This is believable to an extent, because the majority of Wilde's material seems to be encompassed in a world of his own. He was incredibly proficient at putting down onto paper the very heart and soul of what he was trying to convey, which eventually contributed to getting him into trouble later on. The "The Picture of Dorian Gray" became notorious amongst critics as being a "corrupt" and "unclean" work, chiefly due to the apparently "sinful" nature of Dorian Gray and his misadventures.
This collection is 1000+ pages in length, though it didn't take me a considerably long time to read because I found the bulk of it incredibly interesting and well-written. Even for those who have read some of his work before (any poems, stories, essays, and/or letters), and especially for those who haven't...get this book! You will not regret for a moment the decision to delve further into the literature of one of the greatest authors that I know of.
no dates.......2006-03-26
This is a very well priced volume. It lacks any notation as to the source or dates of all the texts. In fact, the copyright doesn't even tell you when this volume was published. No named editor. Nevertheless, it's got so much: De Profundis, decay of lying, artist as critic, and then the plays, Dorian, etc. No letters and nothing from trials, but a great volume for the price.
"I Hate It When Everyone Agrees With Me, For Then I Must Consider That I Might Be Wrong".......2005-12-21
The title says it all. This is THEE complete works of Ireland's gift to Victorian London. Wilde's plays, essays, poems, his sole novel, The Picture of Dorian Grey, and his last bitter work, De Profundus, (From The Depths) a letter to his lover and betrayer, Lord Alfred Douglas, is re-printed as well. For the price, it's the best way to add this celebrated, tragic wit to your library.

The Best of Wilde.......2007-06-27
I'm very pleased with the book. All of Wilde's wit is right there at my fingertips. It's a handsome book, too. Thank you.
If you love Wilde, you MUST own this book!.......2006-11-27
Though the print is small for those of us over 40, it's worth it - if not, it would weigh about 10 pounds! As it is, it's a tome, but worth reading, and re-reading time and again. It has everything - everything! - that you'll ever hear mentioned - his stories, his novels, his essay's.
It would make a great gift for a young writer, as well.
This compilation complete, well printed, top 10 library purchase!.......2006-07-28
This particular compilation is not only complete, but is a well printed, well packaged addition to the books you would want in your top 10!
All Wilde.......2006-07-09
I had purchased this complete works of Oscar Wilde since I'd seen several of the recent releases of the theatrical versions of his plays and wanted to know more. As far as one volume complete works go, this has the usual weight (but not to heavy), small print (but not microscopic), and thin paper. It does have intros by Wilde's son and grandson which are interesting. Not having read much of Wilde it's been great being able to read not only his famous works (The Importance of Being Ernest, the Canterville Ghost) but also his lesser known ones (Lady Windemere's Fan). His plays are witty and often make interesting observations on human interactions, but they start seeming redundant after you've read more than three (every one seems to include a debonair, worldly cynic who offers his insights on the world--the characters played by Rupert Everett if he performs Wilde). I've yet to finish all the works but I look forward to attempting to do so.
I would recommend this book to new Wilde fans, literature majors, etc. For those just looking to read one or two of his works this would not be the way to start.
fantastic.......2005-12-25
Oscar Wilde is one of the best writers that ever lived and this book is a must have!

Book Description
`Yet each man kills the thing he loves, By each let this be heard, Some do it with a bitter look, Some with a flattering word, The coward does it with a kiss, The brave man with a sword!' A powerful poem of universal guilt and a protest against capital punishment, The Ballad of Reading Gaol is Wilde's best-known poem, yet it is quite unlike the rest of his poetry. At Oxford Wilde discarded the passion and politics of his mother's Irish nationalistic anti-famine poetry and opted to follow an English Romantic tradition, paying tribute to Keats, Swinburne, and the Pre-Raphaelites. Admiration of French masters gradually led to his writing Impressionist, even decadent poems and his collection Poems (1881) brought accusations of obscenity and plagiarism as well as scathing reviews. Unabashed, Wilde revised and reprinted his final `Author's Edition' in 1892, by which time he was the successful author of fiction, criticism, and Lady Windermere's Fan. This volume follows as closely as possible the chronological order of composition, highlighting autobiographical elements including the young Wilde's conflicting attitudes to Greece and Rome, pagan and Christian, and his fluctuating attraction to Roman Catholicism. The Appendix shows Wilde's original ordering, constructed with great care around a `musical' arrangement of themes. The poems reveal unexpected aspects of a literary chameleon usually identified with sparkling wit and social comedy.

I thought I would ignore the reviews on here..........2007-09-04
too bad I didn't. If you want to start out reading James Patterson, this would be a bad place to start. It's nice too read to see how Mr. Patterson has come as a writer. The story is unreal and crazy, in a really bad way. He does do a good job of describing everything to you, but that's about it.
Ugh!
There are some funny parts though, like when he spends 2 pages describing the setting, so that they characters can say two lines.
...
I repeat, DO NOT BASE YOUR OPINION ON JAMES PATTERSON WITH THIS BOOK.
Boring and Flat.......2007-06-25
I like James Patterson's later novels, but I think he made a mistake by re-issuing some of his earlier books under new titles. SEE HOW THEY RUN, which was Patterson's third book, was originally titled the JERICHO COMMANDMENT and was originally published in the late 1970s. This plot deals with a terrorist plot involving the Olympics -- I won't say more than that, because it would spoil certain twists in the plotline (many of the reader reviews do exactly that, so be wary of reading them!).
Unfortunately, SEE HOW THEY RUN has really thin characterization and a meandering plot that doesn't really excite or satisfy the reader. I also wasn't thrilled to see the Holocaust used as a cheap plot device, which is essentially what this book boils down to.
Patterson, like most writers, got better with time. My advice is to skip this early effort and focus your attention on the Alex Cross series and Women's Murder Club series, which are far superior to this misfire.
See How They Run.......2006-06-27
James Patterson is such a gripping writer. I couldn't put the book down. There's always a surprise somewhere waiting to jump out and get you.
not impressed.......2006-03-26
too slow--this book was not enjoyable. The story did not flow well.
*sigh* what is going on?.......2005-11-29
I love Patterson; however, this book is so full of inconsistencies, false "facts", missing links, crazy mysteries and unfinished story lines, that I simply cannot recommend it to anyone. While, the general idea for this book's plot may be interesting (even though apparently it's highly controversial to some people), the author made it boring, flat, and not believable at all.
At times it almost seems as if Patterson were writing 3 or more books at once and he went back and forth between them whilst forgetting which one he is writing at the moment.
In my opinion the worst thing about this book is not the plot, not even all the things that made no sense, but the absolute lack of depth of the characters. These people seem absolutely unreal, which bothers me to no end.
Book Description
How horses experience the world-and how we know it.
"People have been training and riding horses for thousands of years without the help of science. But how much richer and deeper can our appreciation of these wonderful animals be if we do understand some of the 'whys' about them."
What do horses mean when they neigh, nicker, and snort? When a horse refuses to jump a fence, what is it seeing? How can a horse's bones tell us whether people rode it or ate it? In clear, engaging prose, Stephen Budiansky takes us inside the world as horses experience it and explains how we came to these insights. A horse lover's treat and a great introduction to science in one exciting read, illustrated with ten black and white photographs and ten line drawings.
Stephen Budiansky, owner of a horse farm and author of a highly successful adult horse book, The Nature of Horses, combines his fascination with horses with his passion for scientific discovery to give young readers the perfect bridge from loving horses to appreciating science.
Customer Reviews:
Not just for kids.......2006-04-15
I didn't realize this was intended for children until I had brought it home, as the exterior cover does not so indicate. However, I did enjoy it and it increased my understanding of my own horse's behavior. Good for parents who want to introduce their children to scientific study and how a researcher can make definitive statements based upon uncovered facts. However, probably better for older children, 12 and up, unless they are already well-read and have a broad vocabulary.
Darling Poor, the Horses Editor at BellaOnline
Facts about horses in layman's terms. .......2006-02-21
The book is simple to read and easy to understand. It gives you the basics with study back up to the author's statements. Not what I was looking for but easy to read and informative.
fascinating read about the horses mind...............2001-04-01
I came upon this book while looking for ones for my children. As a rider, I am always interested in knowing more about whats going on inside the horses head. The author is a horse owner and a researcher as well and really keys into the senses of a horse and why they are so important to him. I would think any child over the age of 11 or 12 who loves horses and wants a better understanding of them would enjoy this book. It is an easy read and has references for further reading and a glossary on horse terms. Enjoyable book for older children.

You can't stop reading.......2002-01-04
Since I started to read this book I just couldn't, stop doing it, is an amazing suspense story from the first page till the last page, and the way that Montana fights against the bad guys is not out of reality at all, meanwhile you learn a little bit of autism boys.
GOOD SUSPENSE.......2000-08-26
This book got better and better as the pages flew by and tension mounted... Eight year old autistic twins, Rickie and Trace, attended a special school........while out in the school playground with their teacher, Laura Stoner, they witnessed an elderly man getting gunned down right in front of them!! As with most autistics, they had a gift for details with numbers.....they repeated the license plate number, how many shots were fired, and described the murderer.......what they had witnessed was the execution of a mafia don.... Ex-cop turned assistant U.S. attorney, Mike Montana, was in charge of protecting both Laura and the twins....Laura had no option other than to trust him while he moved them around from one state to another, running from the villains and not knowing who in the US government, has betrayed them!! This story will have you holding your breath when the good guys confront the bad guys!!
If you are getting a little weary of Mary Higgins Clark ...........2000-05-27
I say it again -- if you are getting a little weary of Mary Higgins Clark, then try Bethany Campbell's thrillers. I picked this one up out of the blue (on a whim) and was hooked from page one. Well drawn characters, a very tense plot, and plenty of empathy for people who are coping with children with problems. Any mother or teacher can relate to this book, and be carried along by a fast moving, credible plot as well. Bethany Campbell's publishers should be promoting her like crazy, because there is a heap of talent in this lady.
AMAZING!!!.......1999-04-27
this was one of the best books i have ever read!! I was reading late into the night, and at every spare minute i could!! an absolute must read!!! The characters are well developed, and the plot is fascinating, with a wonderful climax!

See How They Run.......2006-05-04
A play for 6 males and 3 females
"No question about the title of this smash London hit. So swift in the action, so involved the situations, so rib tickling the plot that at its finish audiences are left exhausted from laughter as though they themselves had run a footrace. Galloping in and out of the four doors of an English Vicarage are an American actor and actress (he is now stationed with the Air Force in England), a cockney maid who "touches alcohol for the first time in her life," four men in clergyman's suits presenting the problem of which is which, for disguised as one is an escaped prisoner, and another a sedate bishop aghast at the goings on and the trumped-up stories that are told him."

When the family finds out they have a grandson they will stop at nothing to get the child they believe belongs to them
