5 out of 5 stars The most readable edition.......2007-08-05

I have several complete Shakespeare editions, and the Pelican stands out as the most readable I own. The book is, of course, large and thick, but the paper is not see-through, and the type is large enough for those of us with aging eyes. The text is in two columns with footnotes at the bottom of each column, making it easy to skip from words to notes and back again.

Best of all, as an owner of the Arkangel Shakespeare on CD, the Pelican is the text they use for these recordings, so following the text in print when listening to those excellent audio versions is perfect with this edition. While there is not a lot of critical apparatus - any Shakesperean worth his or her salt already has several books analyzing the plays - this volume offers a great readability for its cost. A must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Complete.......2007-03-11

works really well if you are taking multiple classes with Shakespeare as required reading or if you just love Shakespeare in general

5 out of 5 stars Stick to this one.......2007-01-21

After reading the Pelican edition of The Merchant of Venice, I knew this was the Complete Shakespeare edition I wanted to buy. The footnotes are excellent and the essays are a great introduction to the plays, especially to the beginner Shakespeare reader. For a deeper and more detailed review of each book, I would recommend Asimov's Guide to Shakespeare.

5 out of 5 stars Best Ever.......2006-11-15

I have three different Complete Works of Shakespeare and this one is the best. It has great footnotes and intoductions. The cover does get damaged pretty fast, which is the only draw back I see. It doesn't break, but gets dirty. I'm not sure why, but everyone in my class has dirty books.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Pelican Shakespeare.......2006-11-06

This is the most complete and most helpful book of Shakespeare I have encountered. Foot notes are excellent.. I will never read Shakespeare from another publisher.

    Book Description

The new Oxford edition of Shakespeare's complete works reconsiders every detail of their text and presentation in the light of modern scholarship. The nature and authority of the early documents are re-examined, and the canon and chronological order of composition freshly established. Spelling and punctuation are modernized, and there is a brief introduction to each work, as well as an illuminating and informative General Introduction. OUP and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre this year embark on an official partnership to celebrate the plays both in print and performance -- this reissued and rejacketed edition of the complete works underscores the commitment.

5 out of 5 stars The ORIGINAL Text Of Shakespeare's Works-First Folio, Published In 1623. A MUST For Any Educated Person........2006-11-10

William Shakespeare-the greatest dramatist the world has ever known. With a very impressive output (37 plays, 4 poems and 154 sonnets, all of them beautifully written), he has rightly been called "Not of an age, but for all time." This, coming from a rival poet (Ben Jonson) is high praise indeed. The plays, poems and sonnets are very difficult to review individually, as they are well written. Shakespeare brilliantly captured the essence of human behaviour in his works. Of course, Shakespeare is not for everyone. Regarding film versions of his plays, I strongly recommend Sir Laurence Olivier's three self-directed Shakespeare films ("Henry V," "Hamlet," "Richard III"), Kenneth Branagh's growing output of Shakespeare ("Henry V," "Much Ado About Nothing," "Hamlet," "Love's Labour's Lost") and faithful stage versions of Shakespeare (The Merchant Of Venice [an out-of-print film starring Laurence Olivier and directed by Jonathan Miller], "King Lear" [starring Laurence Olivier and filmed as a movie in 1984], "Othello" [starring Laurence Olivier and filmed as a movie in 1965]). I also recommend Oliver Parker's 1995 version of
"Othello," starring Kenneth Branagh as the villainous Iago and Franco Zefferelli's 1968 version of "Romeo & Juliet," as well as West Side Story," a classic musical featuring music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim (in his debut; he would eventually write "Sweeny Todd") and masterful choreography by Jerome Robbins (he choreographed the dance sequences in "The King & I," "Fiddler On The Roof") which uses the tragic storyline of the play in a modern setting without the dialogue (unlike that idiot Luhrman, who had the c----es to COMPLETELY MODERNIZE the play; "West Side Story" and "Love's Labour's Lost" is as far as you can get to modernizing Shakespeare, the God of playwrights).

His plays, poems and sonnets are rated PG for some violence ("Titus Andronicus," "Macbeth," "Hamlet") and mild vulgarity (sexual references gracefully obscured in Elizabethan English; "Much Ado About Nothing," "Othello," "King Lear," "Venus & Adonis," "The Rape Of Lucrece," etc; though the language of his time was bawdy, Shakespeare DID NOT condone sexual licence). Profanity was also non-existent at the time. He used the words ("Damn," "Hell," "A--," and "B----" [once; in "King Lear"]) in their original definitions. Hell, as a place of torment, damn as in eternal banishment from God, a-- as in the animal also called a donkey and b---- as a female dog. Used improperly, these words immediately become insults of the most vulgar kind.

    5 out of 5 stars Masterwork edition!.......2006-02-24

The egregious and omnipresent figure of this unequaled dramaturge reached a peak of colossal dimensions. Although the elapsed time, his influence and absolute domain of the drama, his delirious visions about the greed, ambition, and power 's thirst seem to revive the glorious splendor of the unbeatable Greek tragedy.

There has not been any other writer who had retaken with such vigor, intensity and unrestrained realism the core of the tragic spirit. As the great visionaries, he introduces in his works and obligates us to be part of it. You cannot avoid it. Passion, luxury, betrayal, murder are fundamental factors that support the most diverse complexities of the human soul.

The extended range of aroused emotions we experience show us the mastery of his genius. Humor ( The merchant of Venice, Merry wives of Windsor, The comedy of errors) the eloquent passion exhibited in Gerona 's lovers, the sublime exquisiteness of A midsummer night `s dream, the egregious domain of the feminine psychology (The taming of the shrew) and his portentous vision of the last consequences of the power (Richard III, Macbeth, Hamlet, King Lear) reveal such penetrating knowledge of the human being that may be considered a continuous and always renovated source of analysis and febrile investigation for all those who had decided to get inside this kaleidoscopic universe.

His radiant brightness endures and increases through the times. Reading him we understand and even anticipate a good part of the past story of the last Century. That is why Albert Camus defined the XX Century as the Fear 's Century, he was thinking and talking in Shakespearean terms.

Perhaps the most distinguished and remarkable aspect to underline resides in the fact his characters are so emblematic by themselves; that frequently defies any logic or defined ideology. They are models in which his kindness, perversity or evilness concern.

Don' t let your life passes over without having been a silent witness of the astonishing, delirious, chilling, fascinating and sublime world of this Giant ` s Literature.

5 out of 5 stars Reading from ' the complete works' is more difficult .......2005-10-26

In one sense I think almost every person feels a special pleasure in having a complete edition of the world's greatest writer. The special experience of knowing that one can turn whenever one wants to such great works of literature, and explore them again is a very real one.
However my long experience with reading has taught me that reading the plays in smaller single - volume more heavily annotated works gives more.
I notice for instance that my own ' complete edition' goes largely unread, and that when I need to read Shakespeare I always go to the single- volume works.

3 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Collection, for the Bookshelf.......2004-07-20

The Arden's Complete Shakespeare is quite gorgeous and very well-presented. The text is easy to read in two-column format, printed on nice paper and equipped with a ribbon book mark. It contains 38 plays and all of the sonnets, which makes the collection more complete than that of Pelican and many others.

However, it is not quite as satisfying as it could be. In particular, there are no footnotes. In the the Pelican Complete Shakespeare, for example, there are ample footnotes explaining obscure references and defining less-common vocabulary. The footnotes and explanations included in the individual versions of Arden's Shakespeare are second to none. The collected works, therefore, is quite unsatisfying. However, I am not too disappointed; I use these footnotes much less than when I began reading Shakespeare.

The net result is that the Arden collection is a really beautiful and easy to read printing of all of Shakespeare's plays but it lacks a lot of input that one would have if the individual plays were collected. I'm happy with the book, but am also thankful I own Pelican.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Classic Updated With Great Introductions.......2004-04-12

What is so great about this book is that the complete works of William Shakespeare are not only written, but also given extraordinary introductions to each play that are brilliantly written by Stanley Wells. The plays are presented in chronological order, and the introductions give newcomers to Shakespeare's work an understanding of what each play is all about, as well as the history behind it. "King Lear" is included both as it was originally written, as well as Shakespeare's revision of it years later.
There is an in-depth glossary at the back of the book that will help the new reader of this work understand many of the words that were written in the plays at that point of time. Another wonderful addition is an index to the first line of sonnets, and the page that sonnet can be found on.
This revised book will bring readers of Shakespeare's work closer to their original meaning thanks to the painstaking updating, while keeping the original titles in tact. I highly recommend this book for its wisdom, revisions, and the new understanding you will gain from the brilliance of centuries long gone, that have stood the test of time.

Susan Snyder writes of the Shakespearean Histories as follows:

"The history play arose at a time when the sense of nationhood was crystallizing in England as in other European states, part of a heightened interest in earlier times that took in chronicles, ballads, and pamphlets as well. Elizabethans looked to events and figures from those times--not only kings and their battles but country squires, folk heroes, and common soldiers with their different activities and perspectives--to anchor the corporate English identity they were newly defining. In a more focused way, playwrights might dramatize through the Plantagenets current political forces both conservative and radical. Certainly some issues of the history plays were current concerns as well: religious factionalism threatened Elizabethan society as well as that of the Wars of the Roses, powerful nobles still challenged central monarchic rule, and conflicts over the succession to the throne had particular resonance in a land ruled by an aging childless queen."

Shakespeare's history plays are those which center on recent English history, and not the plays like 'Julius Caeasar' which have a strong historical element but occur more distantly in time and space.
They do not have the focus of the tragedies and are more episodic in nature. They generally do not have the romantic play of the comedies. They deal with the relationship between private and public.
Some critics perceive in them an effort at 'redemptive history' of bringing a reign of order and harmony into place, climaxing with Henry V.
There is much of Shakespearean greatness in the histories even if at times they seem far more rambling and chaotic than the best of the tragedies or comedies.

5 out of 5 stars Shakespearean Tragedy is Literature at its greatest .......2006-01-19

Shakespearean tragedies have a hero , a powerful figure of outstanding quality who at the end of the story is killed. The hero has a fatal flaw(Hamlet's prescrastination, Macbeth's ambition, Lear and Othello's pride) which leads to the downfall. In the course of the fall some inherent injustice or disharmony of the general society is revealed. The Shakespearean Tragedy has been analyzed as moving through distinct stages , from the opening, to the rising action, denouement, falling action and conclusion.
What I have just written is basic explanatory material which really tells nothing of the essence and greatness, the uniqueness of Shakespearean tragedy.
In his great tragedies Shakespeare creates overwhelmingly powerful and memorable literary characters, of incredibe psychological and human complexity. He too probes to the depths the character of the most central human relationships. Each of the greatest tragedies is a world in itself, and opens up new perspectives on life and human nature. 'Hamlet' is in one sense the most complex tormented deeply poetic character in Literature. Lear is in his rage and grief the most spectacular literary instance we know of bare forked Man bereft and screaming out his pain to the sky. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are Ambitions greatest exemplars and the story of their blood- stained love is too remarkable in its depiction of the workings of conscience and moral justice.
Shakespearean Tragedy is Literature at its greatest. And what I have said here is an infinitesimal bit of what can and should and will be said about these great works.

Michael Crichton takes the listener on a one-thousand-year-old journey in his adventure novel Eaters Of The Dead. This remarkable true story originated from actual journal entries of an Arab man who traveled with a group of Vikings throughout northern Europe. In 922 A.D, Ibn Fadlan, a devout Muslim, left his home in Baghdad on a mission to the King of Saqaliba. During his journey, he meets various groups of "barbarians" who have poor hygiene and gorge themselves on food, alcohol and sex. For Fadlan, his new traveling companions are a far stretch from society in the sophisticated "City of Peace." The conservative and slightly critical man describes the Vikings as "tall as palm trees with florid and ruddy complexions." Fadlan is astonished by their lustful aggression and their apathy towards death. He witnesses everything from group orgies to violent funeral ceremonies. Despite the language and cultural barriers, Ibn Fadlan is welcomed into the clan. The leader of the group, Buliwyf (who can communicate in Latin) takes Fadlan under his wing.

Without warning, the chieftain is ordered to haul his warriors back to Scandinavia to save his people from the "monsters of the mist." Ibn Fadlan follows the clan and must rise to the occasion in the battle of his life. The unabridged story is read by actor Victor Garber (Titanic; The First Wives Club), who brings life and a personality to the plot--convincingly portraying each character with appropriate accents. Crichton also sets the stage in the beginning and chimes in every so often to clarify historical places and events. If you love historical action thrillers, but are short on time, this audio book packs an epic journey into a three hour adventure. --Gina Kaysen (Running time: 3 Hours; 2 cassettes)

              Book Description

The year is A.D. 922. A refined Arab courtier, representative of the powerful Caliph of Bagdad, encounters a party of Viking warriors who are journeying to the barbaric North. He is appalled by their Viking customs -- the wanton sexuality of their pale, angular women, their disregard for cleanliness . . .

their cold-blooded human sacrifices. But it is not until they reach the depths of the Northland that the courtier learns the horrifying and inescapable truth: He has been enlisted by these savage, inscrutable warriors to help combat a terror that plagues them -- a monstrosity that emerges under cover of night to slaughter the Vikings and devour their flesh . . .

4 out of 5 stars A brilliant accomplishment for Crichton!.......2007-08-31

EATERS OF THE DEAD is, essentially, a re-telling of the epic poem "Beowulf" -- which most of us have read but few of us have enjoyed (unless you're one of the fortunate ones who read Seamus Heaney's Beowulf: A New Verse Translation, which is a brilliant and lyrical version I highly recommend). Crichton, who is much better known for his more mainstream fiction (JURASSIC PARK and CONGO are notable examples), has executed a new version of that old tale, this one from the first-person perspective of Arab courtier Ibn Fadlan. Ibn Fadlan begins his journey in Baghdad, on a mission from the caliph to the barbaric North. Along the way, he encounters the Viking warrior Buliwyf and his people. Buliwyf has been summoned even further north by another band of Vikings, whose lands are being terrorized by monsters, the "wendol," who attack under cover of the mist. Before he knows it, Ibn Fadlan has been asked to join the party of warriors...

The first three chapters of the novel are taken from the real Ibn Fadlan's 10th-century writings. From there, though, the story is purely Crichton's imagination. It's remarkable how completely he's able to match his tone to that of Ibn Fadlan's long-ago voice, yet he still makes the story accessible to modern readers. He provides keen insights into the behavior of the Viking people with meticulous research and detailed descriptions. His prose, under the guise of Ibn Fadlan's narrative voice, sets just the right amount of suspense and provides a real sense of atmosphere. I was entertained, and I still felt like I was learning something. Mostly, though, I was amused and awed by Crichton's ability to take a story everyone knows (and few like) and turn it into something completely different, yet still recognizable. What an accomplishment. I haven't seen THE THIRTEENTH WARRIOR, but after reading EATERS OF THE DEAD, you can bet that it's high on my viewing list.

4 out of 5 stars Very well done if you understand Crichton's purpose.......2007-07-22

I think that the confusion with this book arises from the fact that people don't understand what Crichton accomplished. This is a retelling of Beowulf, in a first person, narrative, entertaining form.
The narrator, Ibn Fadlan, is an actual Muslim writer from the 10th century. The first 3 chapters of this book are actually from his original narrative. Crichton then moves from there in to the fictional portion, using Fadlan as a first hand observer of the events surrounding the Beowulf story.
Considering how dreadful Beowulf was (admittedly mainly due to barriers of time, language and perception of what is entertaining), Crichton has accomplished a very difficult task. He has rewritten a very long, very boring epic and made it concise, easy to digest and entertaining.

I hated Beowulf; I found it to be dreadful, boring and longwinded.

This is a wonderful retelling of the story. I highly recommend that any lover of historical fiction read this book.

If you are a fan of Crichton's more mainstream work (i.e. Jurassic Park, Andromeda Strain, etc.) you may want to read a few more reviews and see if you can find a snippet of this story online as it is completely different from his other works. The closest novel of Crichton's that I could compare this to would be Timeline and even that is a stretch because Timeline involved Sci-Fi type elements where this is strictly a narrative from the 10th century.

I heartily enjoyed this and was only put off by the ending which just ended. Seriously, be prepared because there is no ending. The book just stops and moves on with an appendix, a historical note and a bibliography. That was a bit annoying. I don't remember if Beowulf did the same.

Still, very well done, very entertaining and very good historical fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Best served with a side of wine and cheese.......2007-07-22

Michael Crichton has penned an excellent rapid-paced adventure. Based on the actual diary of an Arab man traveling with the Vikings, it is sometimes difficult to believe this is a true account and not just pure fiction. Eaters of the Dead is the epic journey of one man who strives to find himself and his place in his world. The main character is richly described. His emotions and internal conflicts are laid before the reader as he witnesses the horrible habits and rituals of his foreign companions. The settings are depicted so finely, you can almost taste the darkness and smell the smoke. What is most compelling about Eaters of the Dead is how the author shows every defining moment with such clarity. All in all, a great, solid story that needs to be slowly savored! A must read!

4 out of 5 stars Eaters of the Dead: a version of Beowulf.......2007-06-23

I read this novel a long time ago (it was first published in 1976) and reread it after watching 'The Thirteenth Warrior' in 2003.

Michael Crichton says he wrote it on a bet that he could make an entertaining story out of 'Beowulf'. From my perspective, he has certainly written a book that will be more accessible to most modern readers than 'Beowulf'. The assessment of entertainment value is best left to the individual reader: I am one who enjoyed it immensely.

The book is set in A.D. 922. A refined Arab courtier, representative of the powerful Caliph of Bagdad, encounters a party of Viking warriors who are journeying to the barbaric North. He is asked to travel with them ...

This is probably not a novel for the faint of heart or for those rendered queasy by bloodthirsty description. On the other hand, it's a good read and different in many ways from some of Dr Crichton's later work.

              Recommended.

One great omnibus of three of Crichton's most popular adventures, with his trademark blend of breathtaking suspense and cutting-edge technology.

              Book Description

Breathtaking suspense and cutting edge technology--that's the gripping mix Michael Crichton has mastered in thriller after page-turning thriller, and these three masterpieces of suspense are no exception: Congo, Sphere, and Eaters of the Dead. From the legendary ruins of a lost city in the jungle, to the mysterious depths of the ocean floor in the South Pacific, to the historic horrors of mortal combat in the tenth century A.D.--these fabulous stories transform fears of the unknown into moments of believable adventure and unbearable suspense.

5 out of 5 stars All we need now is all his works in one.......2005-11-13

I loved Sphere and Congo. I read them when 3 years ago I was overseas in Africa when I was about 11, and was glad a picked them up. I had read previous books, such as Jurassic Park and The Lost World, as well as The Adromedia Strain. In all truth, Sphere scared me senseless, I ended up reading all of it in one night because it was too frightening to put down. Congo is another book I bought just so I could re-read it over and over. I have to say that the movie just doent do it justice, just cant capture the pure emotion of the story, the feeling of assembling the parts of the story, what has been described in your head, then having that moment when it all comes together. The spoon-fed images version does not work. I picked up Eaters of The Dead yesterday, and cant wait to start reading it after I finish Traitor General by Dan Abnett.

              5 out of 5 stars Best $7.00 I've ever spent!.......2004-05-29

I bought this book in a local bookstore only because it was marked half off and I recognized the name... and I must say it was the best $7.00 I've ever spent. I started at the beginning and read all 3 books in just over 2 days. All three were great, but Sphere was my favorite. I love his writing style... his writing feels so real-life. I've since read most of his written works.

For readers who have never read anything by Crichton, this is a great place to start because of it's great value and great content. Highly recommended to anyone who likes action, suspense, and good science fiction thriller!

              3 out of 5 stars Congo.......2003-10-21

I read Congo. It is a great book. It has an excelant writing technique. The storyline is terrific. It is pact with intense action filled parts. Even though it was fiction it seemed as if it could really happen. I couldn't quit reading until I was finished. When I was finished reading I wanted to go back and read the good parts over again, because they were so good. The things that I didn't like however is that it seemed to drag on from part to part and it had some swear words. The book is about a team of people that went into the Congo Jungle, to get diomonds, the whole team of people was killed in less than three minutes. In Houston they watched, and saw everybody dead. So what do they do they send in another team. This book is very adventurous during the good parts I didn't want to put it down. It was kind of scarry how everybody was killed so fast and how it might be able to really happen. The intended audience for this book would be for adults. It is not a childrens book. Because it goes into detail during some parts of the book.

This was my first Crichton Book. Don't let the title put you off. It is a facinating story with a great deal of information about Nordic and Arab culture, attitudes, and history. It started just a little slow, but quickly engulfs you into a great story. It is every bit as good as any adventure story around.

For those who are interested in anthropology, there is also some very interesting perspectives about human evolution.
