As stated, the book contains all 256 plates. But there is almost no informational material. If you just want to know what was included in this series, this is your reference manual.

Nice quality with large reproductions, nice heavyweight pages, and great color. Full of inspiring figurative artwork, graphic design, and lettering from a time and place when more work by hand and individual style made it into advertising.

Book Description

French architect and designer Jean Prouvé (1901-1984) was one of the most important constructors of the 20th century. Prouvé's design innovations included cleverly-shaped metal parts for building prefabricated structures; he designed buildings and furniture that could be produced with economy of labor and material and efficiency in use, while maintaining high technical standards and quality materials. His simple and elegant style, while born from the desire for inexpensive production, has become an imitable aesthetic and has earned him a position as one of the century's most influential designers.

This introduction to Prouvé's work gives a profound insight into the variety of his oeuvre and the progressiveness of his inspirational vision.

5 out of 5 stars Prouve-Major Modernist Figure.......2007-02-21

This is the twentieth volume in the German Publishing Company Taschen's Basic Architecture Series. In previous volumes, Taschen has done an excellent job of summing up the careers of most the world's greatest modernist architects. It is fitting that after the first round of iconic masters, (Mies, Corbusier, Wright, Gropius) that Taschen has now moved on to other important modernist architects and designers.

In most surveys of modern architecture, Jean Prouve's buildings are not prominently featured. He did not design the iconic buildings with which other great architects are usually closely identified. Today, Jean Prouve is probably best known for his furniture designs. However, Prouve contributed to the modernist agenda in other ways. As a designer, he produced some of the first modular metal buildings. Most of the metal buildings we see today are the grandchildren of the designs he first originated in the 1930's. However, his single greatest accomplishment is as one of the inventors of curtain walls. We may not be aware of them but they are all around us.

Jean Prouve's work is not an easily accesible as some of the other great architects and designers of the period. Nevertheless, he was a powerful, inovative figure whose vision helped shaped the modern world. At a ten dollars a volume, this book is another Taschen success.

    Book Description

Norman Foster and Renzo Piano invoke his name. For many architects he is a landmark - Jean Prouvé, creator of the metal curtain wall, pioneer in its application and early initiator of industrialised building techniques. His unfailing ability to combine functional engineering achievements with artistic sensitivity commands recognition. The period covered in this latest volume is significant in many respects. The post-war years placed enormous demands on housing and school construction. In his Maxéville factory Prouvé developed pre-fabricated housing, facade panelling, light filtering and other systems on a large scale. He was inspired by the works of the automobile and aeronautics industry, developing new applications for aluminium, which he presented in the 1954 Aluminium Centenary Pavilion. Moreover, Prouvé's furnitures of this period have become valuable collectors' items, some of which are now being reissued under licence.

    Book Description

Jean Prouvé (1901-1984) was one of the most renowned design engineers of the 20th century. This volume, the second in Birkhäuser's 4-volume edition of Prouvé's Complete Works, covers the period between 1934 and 1944, including such significant works as the "semi-metal" Chair no. 4 and its variations, which went into serial production from 1935 onwards, office furniture for the Parisian Electricity Supply Works and seating for the lecture hall of the École des sciences politiques in Paris. In 1934 Prouvé's workshop commenced production of entirely pre-fabricated sheet metal buildings such as the Flying Club at Buc. One of the triumphs of this period is the Maison du Peuple communal hall in Clichy, an outstanding monument of functionalism and a "hymn to metal and folded sheet". This volume also includes texts of previously unpublished conversations with Prouvé about the Flying Club and Maison du Peuple.

4 out of 5 stars For the Prouve Completist.......2000-03-02

Despite the importance of his work, Prouve has largely been neglected in books about mid-century modern design. This book (along with the first and forthcoming volumes) offers a very detailed look at Prouve's designs and puts the evolution of his design and metal fabrication skills into perspective. This book shouldn't be missed by any collector of Prouve's work.

      Book Description

Jean Prouvé (1901-1984) was one of the most outstanding design engineers of the 20th century. His work is a remarkable combination of creative imagination, technical skill and visionary enterprise. The first of Birkhäuser's 4-volume edition of Prouvé's Complete Works covers the period between 1917 and 1933 including the first metalwork objects (staircase railings, lamps), the first standardised building products (windows, doors, movable partitions), the first furniture in moulded steel and the first building projects to use folded sheet metal, such as operating theatres in Lyon's Hôpital Grange Blanche, as well as the text of numerous conversations with Jean Prouvé. "Peter Sulzer's work is an admirable catalogue raisonné of the works of Jean Prouvé... He has made a remarkable synthesis from a variety of sources, rigorously organised on the page and easily readable" (commendation on the award of the French Briey Prize for an architectural book).

5 out of 5 stars One should design merely what can be executed... .......2007-09-18

I am not that familiar with Jean Prouve's projects nor about him. I knew of Maison de Peuple and Tropical Houses, but this is a very exciting book to read and make connections with other giants of modern architecture. The book is not organized like other architectural monographs. Rather, it is organized based on tiny themes, and it feels as though you are visiting an exhibition at a museum and moving through. There are 5 large themes which organize smaller themes: 'technical thought', 'tools and production methods', 'factoried houses: metal, wood, concrete', 'furniture and interiors' and 'reception, legacy and biography'. Then as you are probably aware of Jean Prouve as not only an architect, but an engineer and constructor, the focus is much devoted to his latter role and design approaches as a builder. There are a lot of information on metal fabrications and interesting behind stories in relation to Le Corbusier, Mies, Tony Garnier... My favorite is about his involvement with the construction of Berlin Free University, one of the most significant modern (mat) buildings , designed by the members of Team 10, Candillis, Josic, Woods and Schiedhelm. The only draw back is that the usual architectural documentations such as plans, sections and photos etc on major projects are somewhat short. Nevertheless, I think anyone who loves buildings will enjoy this book for what it holds... not to mention that the covers are made of metal!!! So if you decide to get it, make sure that you find a copy without any dents.

        Book Description

With his spiritually-inclined philosophy and his decision to establish his career in rural Pennsylvania, Japanese-American furniture designer George Nakashima has always existed within a mythology of craftsmanship that celebrates regionalism and the handmade. Yet, as this catalogue shows, he also belongs within the practice of mid-century European modernism, amongst a roster of artists including Charlotte Perriand, Carlo Mollino, Jean Prouve, Alexandre Noll, and Finn Juhl, with whom he shared a respect for that which is visible in the details. Details, as they all knew, reveal a belief that materials and construction are not only functional, but are also aesthetic, complex, and precise.

              Book Description

Jean Prouvé ranks amongst the most innovative engineers and designers of the 20th century. His influence on those who have followed him has been extensive, with the renowned architects Sir Norman Foster and Renzo Piano, and engineers such as Peter Rice acknowledging their debt to him. This selection of highlights provides an ideal introduction to the work of Jean Prouvé and testimony to his importance for modern architecture and design. Professor Peter Sulzer, author of the Jean Prouvé Complete Works edition published by Birkhäuser, has gathered together Prouvé's most notable buildings, including the Maison du Peuple in Clichy near Paris, one of the outstanding buildings in Functionalism, as well as examples of his exceptional furniture designs from the 1930s and 1940s . Subsequent volumes in the Complete Works edition will cover the years 1945-1984.
