Book Description
With its blend of Eastern mysticism and Western culture, Hesses best-known and most autobiographical work is one of literatures most poetic evocations of the souls journey to liberationHarry Haller is a sad and lonely figure, a reclusive intellectual for whom life holds no joy. He struggles to reconcile the wild primeval wolf and the rational man within himself without surrendering to the bourgeois values he despises. His life changes dramatically when he meets a woman who is his opposite, the carefree and elusive Hermine. The tale of the Steppenwolf culminates in the surreal Magic TheaterFor Madmen Only!Originally published in English in 1929, Steppenwolf s wisdom continues to speak to our souls and marks it as a classic of modern literature.

Almost perfect........2007-08-27
Theres nothing much to say, its a good product, just wish it was a little smaller given that i got it paperback to carry it inside the jacket pockets, half an inch smaller would have been good, even if it still fits its troublesome and a little annoying that you have to struggle to tuck it in. Still the rest is pretty good and the cover picture is nice.
The Man Who Understood.......2007-08-13
There are people out there, reading this review now, who have gone thru life feeling as though no one has ever understood them. Some of those people will read this book, 'Steppenwolf', & it will hit them like a bolt(& some wont like it at all). Not only will a few of them feel as though they have finally been understood, but they might feel as though at last they can begin to understand themselves!
Yes, there is someone who understands. His name is Hesse. Unfortunately he has passed on, he was from an earlier generation. But you know, when he lived people from all over the world wrote him letters asking for his understanding. He answered them all, & he usually had good advise for them. & he was able to understand not only because he was intellgent, but also because he had also suffered the problems of his 'Steppenwolf' himself. Yes, it might seem that he were writing this best of all books about each of us individually, but it was, in fact, autobiography. Half autobiography, half poem, & 100% masterpiece. Please read it, & dont allow the 1st 80 pages throw you off- it is going to come alive for you, as it has for people since 1927. You might be in for a treat.
However, some dont feel this way, especially these days. It is a little odd, I feel, that Hesse (who was so popular with readers from my generation in the early 1970s) has had a decline in popularity from 1980 on. He doesnt seem to strike the same chord in todays young readers as he did 30 years ago. Maybe because his books spoke about the importance of spirt over that of technology, I dont know. I dont think Hesse would have seen the rise of the PC & the internet as a bad thing at all, & think it would have been right up his alley, & that he might have made the internet a better thing than it is. In fact, the theme of 'The Glass Bead Game' brings to mind todays internet, & there is a website devoted to just that. But, for me anyway, the fact that todays generation has sort of rejected Hesse is one of the more sad things about it, because I would have believed that they would have embraced him even more than mine did. I think the reason that they havnt might be because that while they are very much in favor of the enlightment that Siddhartha, Goldman, Harry Haller, Sinclair, etc ultimately reach, they have never experienced the PROBLEMS of the Steppenwolf that set those characters on that road in the 1st place. I think that those kinds of problems might have been unique to my generation, & that Hesse came along for Americans just at the right time. It seems that the times have changed.
Mix of Darkness and Mysticism.......2007-08-02
In this unusual novel by Herman Hesse, Harry Haller is the Steppewolf, lonely, isolated, and struggling with conflicting desires of arrogance, emptiness, and longing. Things change dramatically when he meets a woman quite different from him. All seems to lead to the magic theatre, which made for interesting if confusing reading. Hesse blends eastern mysticism with western culture and a somewhat anti-bourgeois message, and many persons battling depression have apparently found it easy to identify with the main character. We read this book in a college literature class and it left us (and even the teacher) confused, although many say's the story is more comprehensible once you've read other Hesse novels. If you like dark stories with conflicting emotions and mysticism, this book may be for you.
A Classic Tale, but Not a Casual Read.......2007-07-23
In the post-millennial era, Herman Hesse's STEPPENWOLF seems like a quaint and faintly pompous throwback to the LSD-driven late 1960's - Woodstock, Joplin, Haight-Ashbury, Hendrix, the summer of love, Jim Morrison, and "Let It Be." The real surprise comes from realizing that Hesse published the original, German language version of this book in 1927, not 1972.
The story centers around a lonely intellectual named Harry Haller, a man of culture and taste who clearly holds himself in far higher esteem than his life's achievements would dictate. So much so, in fact, that Haller views most everyone and everything around him with a disdainful condescension. He even disdains the bourgeois class of which he is by all appearances a member (think Groucho Marx's line about not wanting to be a member of a club that would have someone like himself as a member). In his over-intellectualized manner, Harry has partitioned the world - and himself - into two modes: the rational, academic Harry Haller mode and the emotional, feeling world he ascribes Jekyll and Hyde-like to the wolf from the steppe that he harbors within himself. Naturally, it is the Steppenwolf that Haller struggles to hold at bay. As a consequence of his efforts, Harry is lonely, bored, and purposeless, at a stage where the only meaningful recourse is a razor blade applied to the wrists.
Everything begins to change when Harry stumbles across an advertisement for the anarchist Magic Theater and a pamphlet "Treatise on the Steppenwolf. Not for Everybody." whose message seems oddly tailored to Harry himself. Shortly after, he meets the mysteriously alluring Hermine and the elusive young jazz saxophonist Pablo (at, of all places, the Balance Hotel - get it?). Haller's first reaction to jazz is hyperintellectual, all music theory and analysis, but Hermine gradually brings him around to feeling the music for itself. She slowly but steadily opens Harry up to the wider world of feelings and emotions, using methods as varied as ballroom dance lessons and a surprising illicit lovemaking arrangement. After weeks of preparation and a certain amount of sexual teasing from the increasingly androgynous and shape-shifting Hermine, Harry is deemed finally ready to discover his multiple selves in the drug-inspired carnival of the Magic Theater. The grand finale reads like an extended Timothy Leary LSD trip.
Despite being decades ahead of its time in attitude, content, and frankness, STEPPENWOLF remains something of a chore for modern readers. Hesse's writing is dense and laboriously formal, and the sentiments expressed are incessantly despairing when not filled with tired and too-lengthy philosophical dissertations (never more so than in the the Steppenwolf pamphlet). The author's incorporation of Eastern mysticism as well hardly holds the edge it doubtless offered in 1927. Furthermore, Harry Haller is a decidedly unlikable protagonist - patrician, priggish, and an insufferable esthete. All that being said, STEPPENWOLF remains a remarkable literary accomplishment, a 40-year precursor of the 1960's counterculture movement and the so-called Age of Acquarius. "Know Yourself," "Make Love, Not War," and "If It Feels Good, Do It" sound like nothing so much as admonitions from Hermine and Pablo to live life in the moment. Perhaps the Magic Theater was reborn in MacArthur Park after all.
Worth the effort.......2007-07-06
I read this book in 2001 when I first started making an effort to read and still remember the effect in had on me. I would read about 10 pages a night before having to put it down because in a lot of ways the story brought on a feeling of emptiness and depression similar to what the main character experienced in the story. Yet the story and the character Harry Haller made me think, look at myself and life which to me is one of the most valuable things a book, story or experience can provide a person. The story has a chance to stir your soul if you reflect on the main themes and question - what is life.

Book Description
These two stories are among the most popular and influential of the German Romantic period. By pitting the mediocre against the artist and the self against the mob, while blending aspects of the artist's journey and a healthy dose of Eastern philosophies, Hesse has remained a hero to the young at heart.

Book Description
Although Steppenwolf received little critical acclaim on its publication in 1927, it is now generally considered to be Hesse's most innovative and influential novel, comparable with Joyce's Ulysses, and becoming themost widely-read German novel of the twentieth century. This study surveys the diverse critical reception it has provoked. Taking a chronological approach, Professor Richards covers the early criticism and the primarily biographical studies of the pre-war period; the mainly German-based explorations of important facets of the work in the 1950s; the massive expansion of scholarship in the 1960s and 1970s; and the consolidating recent studies. He shows thatHesse scholarship has tended to favor a biographical approach, with a strong psychological and psychoanalytical component; newer critical methodologies have provided fresh insights and contributed to the ongoing controversies overthe novel's form and structure, its mixture of different levels of reality, and the problematic interpretation of symbolic figures and events.

Customer Reviews:
Every Author (or coauthor) writes a flop now and then.......2007-09-15
This book is bereft of the usual Clive Cussler techno-craft as well as lacking a well thought out plot. Instead this "thriller" reads like a series of "Mission Impossible"tm 30 minute television plots strung together with a rather boring story line.
Character development is stilted as well - none of the characters were well developed, and when any character development was actually done, it appeared to be as a after thought while the current "mission impossible"Tm 30 minute story was unfolding. In fact, I kept expecting each of the characters to die as they were so poorly developed.
I'm a great fan of Clive Cussler's writings...I've enjoyed each of them from the beginning. This one is a loser. Unlike the previous works (including two cowritten by these two authors), I won't be keeping this book and rereading it like I have the others. It's into the dustbin with "Golden Buddha"
Clive -- you can do better. If you are going to use a coauthor, spend some time working the plot with them. Life's too short to turn off your readers.
Saving Ancient Religious Object Causes Clash of Superpowers.......2007-09-05
Clive Cussler has written *yet* another exciting action-packed book on a contemporary subject, the theft of an ancient religious object which is also a work of art, the Golden Buddha. The book is filled with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader up at night, furiously turning the pages, wanting to know what happens next. This is the first book in a series in which Juan Cabrillo, along with expert men and women who reside on the ship Oregon, covertly engage in activities to make the world a better place and at the same time, make a huge profit for themselves. The Oregon looks like a rusty old freighter ship. Its deck is loaded with junk. Its wheelhouse is filthy and smelly, a fitting disguise for a ship equipped with the most modern computer technology ever devised, with communications and weapons systems to match. It also includes state-of-the-art underwater craft equally equipped with monitors, sensors, and computer technology to make the impossible ... possible.
The background is set: it is March 1959, the Dalai Lama prepares to leave the summer palace. The Dalai Lama escapes to India where he plans to reside safely, until the time comes when peace returns to Tibet and he can take his rightful place as religious leader of his people. During the 13th century, the Tibetans received a Golden Buddha, as a gift commemorating victory over the forces of Kublai Khan. The statue weighed almost 600 pounds and was jewel encrusted. It was given to the first Dalai Lama in 1372 and remained in the monastery in Tibet, until the Dalai Lama escaped to India, where it was safely transported. Unfortunately, the Golden Buddha disappeared in modern times, at the airport in Manila, Phillipines, when it was to accompany the Dalai Lama to the United States to be put on display.
A secret art auction was taking place in Geneva, Switzerland ... with only seven bidders, all of whom had arrived by invitation only. A California billionairre was the client of one of the highest bidders. Another client with an interest in the Buddha was a wealthy drug lord named Stanley Ho who lived in Macau. He was among the noveau riche whose wealth was obtained from obscure sources. He was trying to legitimize his standing in the community and was holding a party which the social elite were attending. One of these two clients purchased the *real* Golden Buddha ... Of course, there was a mix up. The Corporation was hired to retrieve the *real* statue and return it to its rightful owner, the Dalai Lama. Unfortunately, an exact replica of the Golden Buddha existed in the local temple of Macau and had disappeared. It was rumored that the *real* Golden Buddha had a secret compartment, with important records. The United States collaborated with the Russians to help resolve this disappearance. These two super powers created distractions and territorial disputes with the Red Chinese ... using their desperate need for oil to their advantage. Only, the mysterious secret compartment within the Buddha contained information of a magnitude no one suspected.
Clive Cussler puts the reader through their paces in this fast-paced engaging hard to put down novel. He adds a cast of believable characters with interesting eccentricities. He includes political intrigues and economic resources in the mix, along with a rock band, the Minutemen who were hired to capture the Golden Buddha ... The contemporary theme of freeing Tibet along with returning the Golden Buddha to the Tibetans is the vehicle on which the reader will experience the roller coaster ride of a great reading experience. This is a highly recommended book. Erika Borsos [pepper flower]
Certainly NOT a Dirk Pitt novel!.......2007-08-30
I have to say I've been a Clive Cussler fan for over twenty years. I've collected his books and even the films made from his books!
This collaboration could be made into a decent B film. There's a lot of action, sleight of hand movements, changes of location and costumes - but it's no Dirk Pitt book by a long shot, not even a NUMA File book. It's difficult to get involved with or care about the Oregon crew. They could be cardboard cut-outs, just going through the motions ... point A to point B via point C.
I give 3 stars for effort, but only wish it had been Dirk and company going after it. The lack of good-natured humor and caring of the Oregon crew members and depth of characterizations left me cold. I bought it to give the Oregon crew a try as I did for the NUMA files.
Usually, I can read a Cussler novel again and again through the years and enjoy it as if it was the first time. I have all of the Dirk Pitt adventures in hardcover and paperback. This book will be donated to my local library, as I did with the NUMA Files.
Sorry, Juan and Kurt just aren't Dirk!
Golden Boredom.......2007-08-07
This is my first Clive Cussler and my last. It is juvenile and unbelievable. I read more convincing Superman comic books when I was 14. I actually laughed out loud when I read the conversation with Putin, it was that silly. I suppose this would be convincing if my IQ was only 64. I was so bored, that by the time I read half the book I was skipping entire pages and missed nothing. Save your money and buy something else.
Fair to say a solid start.......2007-07-06
3-3.5 stars really. Okay, so, mention Golden Buddha to a bunch of Cussler fans (of which I am one) and some will say they loved it, others will roll their eyes. This is not a book with the intricate plot that we all know and love from the Dirk Pitt series. However, because we see the name "Clive Cussler" on the cover, we expect at least a worthwhile read. Here, I think, is where GB succeeds and the Oregon Files get off to a solid start. Sure, there are a lot of characters that are hard to keep track of and things seem to happen pretty conveniently and a little too well but if you keep pushing through, I think you will discover an easy read that you can settle into and enjoy.
The idea is a good one. An old tramp steamer crewed by mercenaries and literally a wolf in sheep's clothing. Add to that the premise of hiring "the Corporation" out to whoever is deemed worthy and you've got a very Cussleresque way of running a business!
GB starts off well, setting the scene and introducing us (again) to the Oregon, her captain, Juan Cabrillo, and her crew and what they do. Once the job begins to recover the GB, the intrigue and fun begins. Cabrillo and his crew know what's going on (planning and making contingencies within an inch of their lives) but their intricate plans really only become obvious as they occur. The quest for the fake Buddha had me puzzled until it became obvious the crew was stealing it to make some money on the side and spirit the original back to its rightful owner. The freeing of Tibet goes rather smoothly but is not totally implausible. Even by the end, I think the reader will find him/herself getting to know the massive cast of characters/crew members!
Conclusion? Don't take this as anything more than a fun, light-hearted read and consider yourself welcomed to the Oregon Files (and they get better)!

Relaxing read while passing the time.......2002-11-12
I read this book while visiting Bobobudur over 4 days. It perfectly suited the relaxing atmosphere of my vacation.
The first few sections are devoted to the history and the archaeology of the site. Each successive chapters are devoted to the bas reliefs which tell 3 major stories of Buddhist texts.
Personally, I found the latter sections on the stories harder to follow since the books only gives bits and pieces of the story (and sometimes the photo illustrations, which are in great abundance, do not follow the text) and I am not at all versed in these stories. I would have much preferred
a more detailed book on the history and archaeology of the monument. But perhaps that is more difficult to come by because it is not a deeply studied area.
But I think the photographs more than make up for any perceived deficiencies on my part. Each page has at least one big photo which occupies half of the page and that makes it a great coffee table book to browse.
Golden Tales of the Buddhas.......2000-05-01
An excellent book that summarises Borobudur's past and archaeological symbolism. It is a light and informative read of the ancient Buddhist monument in Central Java. The photography is excellent, with lots of close ups of the reliefs. Very often you get whole pages of pictures which tell a story of their own. It's really worth buying this because you'll definitely read it more than once.

Book Description
Theater instructors and students, aspiring actors, and working theater professionals can all benefit from this examination of acting as a self-development practice and spiritual path. Beginning with a brief history of the acting profession, the text covers Stanislavski and other special approaches to actor training, practices specific to acting that can open up wider perspectives, ways to promote both personal and professional development, the place of sexual energy in acting, and more. Also included is a section of practical exercises, based on the author's experience with professional theater companies, various forms of meditation and martial arts, and stage combat. The exercises emphasize both movement and perception and can readily be used in a wide variety of venues, from children's drama classes to community theater training, university acting courses, and professional acting. Using classic theater training and resources as a foundation, this guide incorporates the spiritual aspects of acting for a deeper artistic experience.
Customer Reviews:
a Mind-Bending work!.......2007-08-17
I read the first edition of this book 10 years ago when I was studying acting in Graduate School and it completely altered the trajectory of my process.
Now, the second edition brings a new insight. In the introduction, Olsen pulls the reader through a whirlwind of autobiographical stories and refreshing provacative questions that speak straight to the soul of any performing artist who has ever had the inkling that what they are doing might be something more than mere entertainment.
Golden Buddha is not some cheezy new-agy self-congratulating work that makes actors out to be gods. Quite the contrary, it is a book that inspires humility, purpose, and a kind of joyful uneasiness. Be careful. You may never be satisfied with simply being an entertainer, or a distractor again.
The second edition also has a new special treat for students who have an affection for the contributions Sanford Meisner. A new chapter on Meisner technique as a cure for narcissism.
The end of the book includes several practical exercises that are absolute gold and, in my opinon as a theatre professional and arts educator, are the missing ingrediants in most ensemble work.
You may find many of the ideas to be simple and familiar pointers to ideas that you have heard before or developed yourself by virtue of your experience. However, Olsen proves to be a worthy ambassador for the voice that may be nagging at you to not only "Be here now" but to "Be Here Now More!"

This is a very deep book. This book is deep but it is easy to fallow. It deal with topics that theosophy, philosophy, and most religons deal with. It explains existence, being, infinity, the all very well. It can help you with enlightenment. Your perception of oneness, existenillisim will be changed. If you liked the god delusion you will love this book. THE BOOK MAY ONLY BE 24 PAGES BUT THE BOOK ITSELF IS HUGE.

You've Got To Be Kidding Me.......2006-12-22
This is a Class A ripoff. It's listed as a paperback book. It's not. It's a paperback pamphlet written in some gigantic typeface (bigger than any toddler's cloth book I've ever seen), mainly so this collection of nonsense would amount to 16 pages. Good luck trying to understand what the author is writing about. I can't believe Amazon would even list this for sale on their site. Is there anything lower than 1 star? My next task is investigating Amazon's return policy, because this piece of nothing is going back.
1 page worth of text is not worth $10.87.......2006-12-06
The text that there was, was interesting. However it is about 1 page of text that is in an utterly massive font spread out over a few pages. In standard print it would just barley fit on 1 page. For the price this is such a complete and total rip off, words fail to describe it. It is pretty much a circle of logic done with words. It says pretty much that everything (of which the known universe is only a small part), exists in infinite time and space. I take this to mean that their are multiple temporal dimensions which make this possible. As in the universe has every possible outcome of every action played out in other universes each existing along another temporal dimension. It says we do have free will, which must mean as we go down the temporal dimension we experience as standard time, we choose the point we go to along the other temporal dimension. It states that we are all God collectively. That we are everything that exists in infinity being aware of itself. Each one of us is one of an infinite number of points of perception. The way "ALL" is stated as infinite I take this to mean all reality through infinity and not just the finite universe we are currently experiencing right now. It also states that we all collectively ARE the infinity of which the universe is only part. This is all very possible as we know the universe is expanding into some area outside of it. We know wormholes can case one point in space to touch another, this bending of space must be done through another spacial dimension like bending 2 dimensional membrane over a 3 third dimension to touch itself for example. If string theory is true as many as 26 spacial dimension could be possible. Time can also touch itself in another point via the wormhole. This would indicate another temporal dimension. Another is implied with the multiple universe theory where every action is played out. So everything that can happen already exists. We do still have free will, but instead of changing anything we just choose which path we go down, which universe we go to in the next singularity of time. Of course those of us here do this together. So all the statements in the book are possible and interesting, but for the amount of text you get for the money you pay it is quite a rip off.
Is ANYONE going to buy this?.......2006-11-26
...my guess is no, unless it's for humor purposes. The author can apparently not even spell correctly or use proper grammar (see his description of the book and other related materials from him above), constantly types in all caps, and he resigns to making up fake editorial reviews and even reviewing his own book under his own name.
And he expects to enlighten us to the true nature of existence? Is this a joke?
