Thanks for offering this product --- I had been looking for this and found it in great condition used from Amazon. It arrived on time and all went well with the transaction. Thanks for making things so easy.

3 out of 5 stars Good, for a "thrift" edition.......2006-07-19

While the text contains some real gems of Emersonian thought (i.e. Divinity School Address and Self-Reliance) it is not an adequate representation of his better works, leaving out "Nature," "The American Scholar" and other more important and influential essays. I, personally, order this text for my Freshman English classes because it's cheap and gives two exemplary representations of Emerson for a survey course; however, if you are looking for a total package text that reflects what Emerson is capable of as a writer and thinker, you are better off investing a little more money and picking up a Norton or Library of America Edition of his works.

4 out of 5 stars Individualism based upon a foundation of moral truth.......2006-01-16

As an avid reader of history, poetry, philosophy and our founding prinicples; I found this book an excellent read.

Although I agree that Emerson may trt to make every individual see their own specific capabilites, inner strengths and power and their own worth; he did so under the premise that God and faith and moral truth were always there (and required) to attain such independence and I never got the impression that he ever turned away from faith or Divine inspiration as the foundation for "living well" and living life to its fullest.

He correctly addressed his displeasure with the entrenched trappings of those so engrossed in symbolism and dogma that many a religious figure and religious organization had wandered away from the light and the truth of what being moral and "holly" (for lack of a better term)really are.

He warned of putting too much trust and faith in those with fancy words, programs or gimmick when talking about truth, because we often find, they may seem to be wise, but they just take us for a ride in the clouds of hope and we are generally let down when we find out that they are as lost as anyone else on how we can truly find the path back to or closer to our creator.

Throughout this book I found just one inconsistency, one undelying war going on in his words. It was the Ying and Yang battle going on beneath the surface for me as i read this work, there seemed to be two opposing/fighting viewpoints).

The one warned us of false intellectuals and false philosophies and false leaders and how they pretend to know the way to salvation, forgiveness and ascension...yet in the second he gave poets way too much credit for being near godlike in their understanding of the universe.

Now I agree that poets see things in many cases with clearer eyes (or that special inner eye) for I have dabbled in poetry myself and found if very rewarding in the expressions of self from a seemingly higher plane; but I certainly do not give that godlike status that Eerson seems to ascribe to them.

However there is so much profound wisdom in this book, and Emerson deserves great credit for his powers of thought and his ability to make us think, that even I could not leave it for long without wanting to come back and finish it.

His words will certainly cause me to ponder the wisdom of his remarks for the rest of my days. An essential read for the critical mind.

5 out of 5 stars Broad-minded and radical thoughts.......2005-05-25

This book has a collection of some of Emerson's best essays including "Self-Reliance" which is probably his most popular work. The underlying theme of all of them is essentially the same: "individuality." He advocated trusting and following one's own instincts and thoughts instead of blindly copying the customs and traditions of society. He encouraged people to search for the truth themselves rather than trying to find it in the works of other philosophers and poets. For example, in "Self-Reliance" he wrote, "In every work of genius, we recognize our own rejected thoughts. They come back to us with a certain alienated majesty."

His style can appear a little lofty at times, but he was gifted with the ability to articulate his thoughts extremely well and without equivocation. The fact that he is still widely read and quoted is a testament to the originality of his ideas and expression. I give this book five stars.

5 out of 5 stars "Trust thyself, every heart vibrates to that iron string" .......2005-04-28

Emerson is a great poet- thinker, the singer of the individual soul in its quest for integrity and autonomy. He is in some sense the protypical American thinker, the one who launches Transcendentalism, and with it Thoreau, Whitman, and in the darker side, Melville, and Hawthorne. He also is the extension of a long development in American religious thought from the intensity of Jonathan Edwards to the water- downed Unitarianism of Emerson himself. Away from the personal God , who enters and controls History to the Impersonal force which runs through the Cosmos.Away from the West, and embracing the East while most highly exemplifying the extension of individual power and right.
Emerson is a difficult, paradoxical and yet often inspirational writer. Reading him or hearing one - hundred and fifty years ago must have been liberating for many. However we live in an age where Individualism and doing one's own thing is the cliche of modern American culture, a culture which at its worst is the culture of Narcissim. There are that is some cultural commentators who see Emerson as the root of all our evils, from family breakdown to moral chaos and religious decline.
Emerson if not in the early essays is however a much more complex and contradictory figure than is readily made out. He had his own great human life- tragedies, losses of those close to him and certainly knew the ' dark night of the soul'. But he does stand at a great American moment, the moment of the American Renaissance, of America about to proclaim itself as the great force of progress and motion in the world. Emerson is singing the soul electric, and the one alone who escaped to tell thee, he is too paradoxically the father of William James Pragmatism, and Henry James' most refined explorations of consciousness.
I do not myself take particular courage or comfort from his ideas ( which again I think are now part of the commonplace mainstream of American mind) but I do value the voice and the thought of the man who walked across the Boston Commons ' glad to the brink of fear.'

I am so glad this book is still in print! It is a wonderful story with equally wonderful illustrations, and a strong message: a child who is "different" turns out to have special talents. One of my all-time favorites.

5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2005-10-10

all of my classmates told me to get a copy of this book "Crow Boy" by Taro Yashima, so i did. when i started reading it, tears flowed from my eyes, it really is "a-must-read"

this book should be recommended for all students and teachers, it'll teach you a moral lesson you'll never forget.

5 out of 5 stars Entertainment to grow your child's heart and soul.......2005-08-17

This book encourages compassion and awareness of the natural world. It is a healthy change for children who are used to overstimulating action books and videogames.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Teachers.......2005-02-18

This story was first read to me by a colleague. A very enlightening and heartwarming story "Crow Boy" forces readers to reflect on the importance of considering individual differences within classroom settings. A child's potential can only be fulfilled when we consider all of their interests and needs. Every teacher must have a personal copy. I am going to get mine.

5 out of 5 stars Accepting Differences.......2000-07-31

In a small Japanese village, Chibi, the main character, is an outcast at school because he is different from the other children. Day after day, Chibi is faced with feelings of isolation and rejection. This memorable story presents the reader with a situation that all children experience some time in their life. The realism of this story allowed me to feel close to Chibi and watch him change towards the end. Through the unique illustrations, Taro Yashima was successful in describing the mood and setting. The moral lesson of this story is beautiful, and should be included in every classroom at the beginning of the school year. Through this lesson, the reader learns to develop an awareness for individual differences. This short story will present you with an enjoyable learning experience. I highly recommend this book for any type of reader.

5 out of 5 stars Theresa's Review ; ).......2007-10-01

This book is a mixture of drama, emotions, and different kinds of relationships. A 10 year old boy getting lost,an aunt flipping out, an a bad father, daughter relationship, all in one small book. This book was really interesting to me because I could relate to a lot of the characters. Sara,Mary, and Wanda are the characters I could most relate to,just small details. It is hard for me to capture this book in a few sentences, and I could usually can.

4 out of 5 stars Our last read for the Fourth Grade girls summer book club.......2007-09-11

We really enjoyed the pace of this book. The entire book happened in 2 days. That gave the author a lot of time to develop the characters. It was easy to relate to how the characters felt, especially Sara and Charley. It was our favorite of all the books we read this summer for book club.

5 out of 5 stars The Summer of the Swans.......2007-03-30

The Summer of the Swans is about a 14-year-old girl named Sara. She and her siblings have lived with her Aunt Willie since she was 6 years old because their Mom died and their father had to work far away. Sara has a 19-year-old sister, Wanda and a 10-year-old brother, Charlie. Charlie's had a vast amount of illnesses throughout his life. He is also mute. Sara feels her sister is much prettier than her and that Charlie gets all the attention because he's sick, so she's feeling like she's nothing to her family.

Sara is in charge of looking after Charlie, so she has to take him everywhere she goes. Sometimes they would go watch the swans near the lake. One night, Charlie becomes curious about the swans and goes out of the house (which he's not supposed to do) and down to the lake. He gets lost all through the night and into the morning. Sara notices Charlie's gone that morning and the whole village spends the day looking for him. Finally, they find him safe and sound. Sara realizes how she plays an important part in her family taking care of Charlie and this makes her feel better about herself.

I liked this book because the transition from the beginning to the end goes from boring and slow to interesting and suspenseful.

3 out of 5 stars matthew's review.......2007-02-27

I thought the book was good. The book was about a 14 year old girl, named sara, in her 14 summer and it all acts the same as last year, but to her there was something different.she thought it was boring this summer, even though it was the same as last summer.there was realy nothing about swans.charlie didn't talk but he was important.even though it acted like sara didn't like him, sara cared for him.at the end sara realized she was just like the swans.

3 out of 5 stars summer of the swans.......2007-02-27

Well I think that charlie wasn't a very smart little boy when he decided to run away. Also he was so mad at sara because she would not let him go see the swans. Also he had ran away I think that sara was just being crazy and acting like she didnt know what was going on.also charlies watch was broken now how in this beautiful world is going to get home. And so sara came looking for charlie and then they couldnt find him so she had asked joe melby what really happened to the watch.

Book Description

A seminal figure in American literature and philosophy, Ralph Waldo Emerson is considered the apostle of self-reliance, fully alive within his ideas and disarmingly confident about his innermost thoughts. Yet the circumstances around "The American Scholar" oration--his first great public address and the most celebrated talk in American academic history--suggest a different Emerson. In Understanding Emerson, Kenneth Sacks draws on a wealth of contemporary correspondence and diaries, much of it previously unexamined, to reveal a young intellectual struggling to define himself and his principles.

Caught up in the fierce dispute between his Transcendentalist colleagues and Harvard, the secular bastion of Boston Unitarianism and the very institution he was invited to honor with the annual Phi Beta Kappa address, Emerson agonized over compromising his sense of self-reliance while simultaneously desiring to meet the expectations of his friends. Putting aside self-doubts and a resistance to controversy, in the end he produced an oration of extraordinary power and authentic vision that propelled him to greater awareness of social justice, set the standard for the role of the intellectual in America, and continues to point the way toward educational reform. In placing this singular event within its social and philosophical context, Sacks opens a window into America's nineteenth-century intellectual landscape as well as documenting the evolution of Emerson's idealism.

Engagingly written, this book, which includes the complete text of "The American Scholar," allows us to appreciate fully Emerson's brilliant rebuke of the academy and his insistence that the most important truths derive not from books and observation but from intuition within each of us. Rising defiantly before friend and foe, Emerson triumphed over his hesitations, redirecting American thought and pedagogy and creating a personal tale of quiet heroism.

4 out of 5 stars America's Scholar.......2007-09-17

In 1837, Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 -- 1882) delivered an oration destined to become one of the prime sources of the American vision at Harvard University before Phi Beta Kappa. In "The American Scholar", Emerson set out a path for American thought that would distinguish it from the thought of Europe. But creating a uniquely "American" scholar was among the least of Emerson's purposes. In his oration, Emerson spoke eloquently for a philosophy of idealism in contrast to the Lockean empiricism prevalent in his day. Emerson celebrated individuality and personal experience rather than conformity to received values and mere book-learning as the source of insight and understanding. He looked to common life and the popular culture as an important source to understanding one's experience. And Emerson taught that scholarly life culminated in action rather than in the cloister.

In 1832, Emerson had resigned his pulpit when he found he could no longer accept certain important Christian doctrines. He became a public lecturer, and, as such, was dependent upon a broad public audience to purchase tickets to his speeches to secure his livelihood. In 1838, shortly after delivering "The American Scholar" lecture, Emerson spoke again at Harvard in an oration again rejecting much of received Christian theology. Following these two lectures, Emerson was not invited to speak again at Harvard for 27 years -- until after the Civil War.

Emerson offered a challenging, provocative vision of the role of the American scholar. It is doubtful whether anyone has achieved or could achieve the ideals he set forth in his oration. In his recent short but detailed book, "Understanding Emerson", Professor Kenneth Sacks analyzes Emerson's celebrated speech in the context of his life to try illuminate the continued appeal of Emerson's address. Sacks is a Professor of History at Brown University who specializes in classical history. He was drawn to study Emerson and American Transcendentalism through his interest in Stoicism and Neoplatonic thought.

Sacks's book is in part a commentary on "The American Scholar" together with Emerson's Divinity School address and his subsequent essay, "Self-Reliance." But "Understanding Emerson" approaches Emerson through placing his oration in the context of his life rather than only through the text of the oration. Sachs is interested in understanding why Emerson delivered this speech when he did and its role in his life.

The Emerson that comes through Sacks's book is a torn, divided figure struggling to be faithful to his own insights on the one hand and to win the approval of the public and of his friends on the other hand. Thus, Sacks presents a figure who wanted to become an individual but who was dependent upon popular approval of his lectures and who was reluctant to give offense on controversial matters. Emerson craved the approval of his friends and fellow-Transcendentalists, but many of Emerson's friends had been disappointed in him at the time of the 1837 lecture for his failure to take strong positions against slavery, among other issues of the day. Emerson craved academic recognition, and, probably, an academic position. But his theological and idealistic views did not win approval among his contemporaries at Harvard.

Sack shows how Emerson struggled with these and similar issues and endeavored to resolve and rise above them in his great 1837 address. Emerson himself tried to live his own ideals and to become the type of scholar that he extolled in "The American Scholar." Sacks tells a human story as well as a prototypical American story of rising to oneself over the needs of earning a living and securing the esteem of others. In the process, Sacks sometimes becomes bogged down in biographical detail, making his book and its important message difficult for readers without a good prior background in Emerson's thought. In emphasizing the value of lived, immediate experience and the need to balance self and personal integrity against the demands of others, Emerson struck important themes that resonate through contemporary American thought and life.

Sacks has written a fine book. Its main virtue is that it will encourage its readers to turn to and read or reread Emerson's "American Scholar" for themselves. The full text of Emerson's address is given in an appendix to the book.

Robin Friedman

3 out of 5 stars The American Oracle finds his voice.......2004-02-12

In the 1830s, the new movement of Transcendentalism was flowering in New England, and coming into conflict with established Unitarianism. Abolitionism was coming to political life. Old friendships among Boston's upper-classes were strained, and new alliances forged, as the times shifted. These long-extinct controversies are minutely chronicled here, with the end of showing how formative they were on Ralph Waldo Emerson. This book tells how Emerson found his place in this flood of events.

I chiefly know Emerson as an aphorist, so it was mildly surprising to read how his contemporaries viewed his Lyceum lectures in much the same light. "A poet, not a philosopher" is the general reaction to his early sallies. Emerson was first-rate, from a family of first-rate men, and everyone knew it. His intellectual promise was generally conceded, but his offerings were faulted for lacking in coherence, notable mostly for brilliant _bon mots_. Emerson reproaches himself in his journals for not tackling the big issues of the day. When things finally click in his mind and he produces _The American Scholar_, the impracticality of its prescriptions is not diminished by its ringing tones.

Yet I suspect that Emerson's slipperiness contributed to his works' staying power. If he had constructed a tidy, interlaced, balanced philosophical system, then he would have been comprehended, absorbed, and done with long ago. But as his best sentences urge the reader on, rather than drawing a map, they continue to inspire down to this day. "Hitch your wagon to a star", indeed.

The book is valuable for introducing the reader to the Bostonian intelligentsia of the 1820s and 1830s, and for reproducing this stage in Emerson's career. Even Thomas Carlyle makes a cameo appearance, as Emerson's moral and financial support helps establish the Scot's reputation in the U.S. I learned a lot--and will probably learn a lot more if I make time to re-read this book. It's the sort of work that makes you want to go and study up, so that you can come back and tackle it again; it's that good.

5 out of 5 stars Kashamba has done it again.......2006-07-12

The book picks up the life of Marvin "Nasir" Bundy, Jr.

Nasir's life is upside down with the drama from Nakea, the mother of his son and his present girlfriend, Farren.

The story begins with Nakea trying to cause havoc in Nasir's relationship with Farren, and his mother doesn't have a problem with it. Farren really loves Nasir and just wants him to do right by her. Nakea feels as though she has been used and her sister reinforces these thoughts.

Nasir is trying to get his life together by getting a job at a local school, but drama comes with keeping the job.

Sean, Nakea's new boyfriend is very jealous of Nasir and will do every and anything to get him.

Will Nasir ever get everything right or will the sins of his past come back to haunt him.

The story is basically about seeking revenge and what call each of them in the process. I really enjoyed Kashamba's latest creation. This is one of the best books of 2006. Kashamba did the damn thing.

          Book Description

Patricia Rosier died at her home in Fort Myers, Florida, in January of 1986, having sought the help of her prominent physician husband, Peter, to end her cancer-ravaged life with some measure of dignity. By November 1987, Peter had been indicted for first degree murder and faced death in Florida's electric chair.

How could it happen? How does a loving husband and father get charged with first degree murder? This compelling true story shows just how easy it is in America's legal system.

"Euthanasia" remains a crime in Florida and in most other states, yet the majority of such "criminals" are never prosecuted. But Dr. Rosier was singled out because he "confessed," both in a television interview and in writing, to believing in euthanasia and to assisting his wife's suicide.

In MURDER OF MERCY every heart-pounding moment of Dr. Rosier's legal ordeal is vividly captured by famed trial attorney Stanley M. Rosenblatt, who, together with his wife and law partner, Susan, represented the accused. Describing an intriguing array of legal twists and turns, this riveting book is more than just gripping courtroom drama. Find out why Patricia's father and brothers sought immunity before they would testify. Feel the rush, the exhilaration, of planning defense strategy: How could anyone explain away Dr. Rosier's confessions? Could the Fort Myers judge be persuaded to change the location of the trial? Should Peter Rosier testify in his own defense? The powerful arguments of the State and the defense are laced with ridicule, sarcasm, and scorn: each side accusing the other of treacherous character assassination.

Rosenblatt's penetrating assessment of judges, the use of expert witnesses, the exclusion of relevant evidence, attorney-client privilege, and the granting of immunity serve as the foundation for a searing critique of America's criminal justice system and the society it is designed to protect.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Read for Lawyers or Laymen.......2006-04-20

Mr Rosenblatt and his wife obviously gave much thought prior to even being associated with such a case. You will find yourself drawn into the case as much as any fictional mystery. Whether trial lawyer or a simple laymen, anyone can learn from this courtroom drama. If only I could find such a passionate attorney who will look not only at the letter of the law but the spirit of the law as is the case with Rosenblatt.

As for one review who criticizes his standing up to the big liars of the tobacco companies who stated under oath "cigarettes are not addictive", well....what can you say to ignorance. When a company purposely makes their product more addictive than it naturally is for all those who were still in their formative years smoking and allowed to smoke away, they deserve the tenacity and morals of a Stanley Rosenblatt.

5 out of 5 stars Murder of Mercy.......2003-07-14

I found this book to be excellent. I think Mr. Rosenblatt is an unbelievable writer. I love the way everything was so detailed. I think this is an excellent book for anyone who finds euthenasia interesting. This would also be a great book for any lawyer or someone interested in law because you could learn alot from Mr. Rosenblatt from his book.

          5 out of 5 stars Amazing book.......2003-07-14

I think this book was outstanding. I loved the way Mr. Rosenblatt described eveything with such detail. I would definately recommend this book to anyone interested in euthenasia.

1 out of 5 stars Something to brag about??.......2000-11-17

Stanley Rosenblatt seems to be proud of his courtroom peformances. His latest, in the Florida smoker's class action trial, resulted in a jury award of almost $145 billion, which will be appealed for years and then eventually thrown out. His closing argument in that case was almost identical to the one in the case he writes about in his book. His general message to juries is along the following lines: Ignore the law. The law used to be that water fountains in this very courthouse could be labeled "for whites only". So, since that was a bad law, you can just ignore all laws, especially the ones that apply to this case. They're too complicated anyway. Instead, just do what feels good. Send a Message. Be on the Today show and have a record breaking verdict to show for the two years you've been sitting here listening to all that boring evidence. Be a powerful person for a day.

How does he get away with this? An interesting question. But to me, an even more interesting question is: why does he brag about it?
