    Book Description

"Mr. Baker perceives the Harlem Renaissance as a crucial moment in a movement, predating the 1920's, when Afro-Americans embraced the task of self-determination and in so doing gave forth a distinctive form of expression that still echoes in a broad spectrum of 20th-century Afro-American arts. . . . Modernism and the Harlem Renaissance may well become Afro-America's 'studying manual.'"—Tonya Bolden, New York Times Book Review

      Book Description

The Harlem Renaissance (1918–1937) was the most influential single movement in African American literary history. Its key figures include W. E. B. Du Bois, Nella Larsen, Zora Neale Hurston, Claude McKay, and Langston Hughes. The movement laid the groundwork for all later African American literature, and had an enormous impact on later black literature world-wide. With chapters by a wide range of well-known scholars, this Companion is an authoritative and engaging guide to the movement. It first discusses the historical contexts of the Harlem Renaissance, both national and international; then presents original discussions of a wide array of authors and texts; and finally treats the reputation of the movement in later years. Giving full play to the disagreements and differences that energized the renaissance, this Companion presents the best of current wisdom as well as a set of new readings encouraging further exploration of this dynamic field.

        Book Description

Challenging conventional constructions of the Harlem Renaissance and American modernism, Daylanne English links writers from both movements to debates about eugenics in the Progressive Era. She argues that, in the 1920s, the form and content of writings by figures as disparate as W. E. B. Du Bois, T. S. Eliot, Gertrude Stein, and Nella Larsen were shaped by anxieties regarding immigration, migration, and intraracial breeding.

English's interdisciplinary approach brings together the work of those canonical writers with relatively neglected literary, social scientific, and visual texts. She examines antilynching plays by Angelina Weld Grimké as well as the provocative writings of white female eugenics field workers. English also analyzes The Crisis magazine as a family album filtering uplift through eugenics by means of photographic documentation of an ever-improving black race.

English suggests that current scholarship often misreads early-twentieth-century visual, literary, and political culture by applying contemporary social and moral standards to the past. Du Bois, she argues, was actually more of a eugenicist than Eliot. Through such reconfiguration of the modern period, English creates an allegory for the American present: because eugenics was, in its time, widely accepted as a reasonable, progressive ideology, we need to consider the long-term implications of contemporary genetic engineering, fertility enhancement and control, and legislation promoting or discouraging family growth.

                  Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best variety of draw-it-yourself alphabets for scrapbookers.......2003-06-11

This book is relatively new on the scrapbooking scene, but already I find myself pulling it off the shelf frequently. It is great to be able to create my own titles in the ideal lettering styles, sizes and colors for each page, rather than having to rely on letter stickers and die cuts.

Scrapbook Lettering starts with a short, helpful introduction that runs through basic tools and techniques, then illustrates the process of freehand lettering. The main body however is devoted to the 50 alphabets. Each font has a two-page spread devoted to it that features its use in sample layouts. The authors are very thorough about explaining the simple techniques you will use to draw each alphabet yourself. Suggested theme pages that go particularly well with the alphabet are included, along with variation ideas & tips. I love the last ten alphabets, which are organized chronologically according to which decade they best complement ý great for those heritage pages!

Hereýs what I discovered after practicing with other creative lettering books: the font styles that can be ýfleshed outý from a basic outline alphabet tend to have a fun, casual feeling to them, but quickly run out of designs for more formal titles and pages. The impressive thing about Scrapbook Lettering on the other hand is that the alphabets are designed by about 20 different published lettering artists, so there is enough style variety that you can match a font to suit any page from wedding albums to baby books. You can draw more than half of them completely freehand; with the rest you will need some help from photocopiers, grids or some tracing paper in order to accurately transfer the lines and maintain the precise look of the fancier fonts.

Some scrapbookers, who are used to completely freehanding the more casual styles of other lettering books, may feel that this is too much trouble to go to for a page title. My advice would be not to give up so easily on your artistic instincts! I think that if you find a more technically involved alphabet that you think would put the perfect finishing touch on your memory page, you should invest the little extra effort it will take to transfer it with grid paper or enlarge with a photocopier first. It will be worth it.

This book is a great resource for projects in art for children. You could say that I was the test subject for a lot of what's in this book. Willard was my grandfather. This book is a treasure that every elementary school teacher should have. My grandfather would take me to the university to work on projects and then put them in the book. What fun that was. Share this book with your children as my grandfather enjoyed it with his son and grandson.

This is my hands down favorite book on lettering. It has a variety to easy to duplicate examples. It was the first lettering book I bought and the standard that I compare everything else too. I am surprised to see it is out of print. If you happen to find one you should snatch it up as quickly as possible. I have one of her other titles. I've looked for some of the others in stores and have not had good luck finding them. I'm thinking Amazon is my best bet to buy them before they go out of print again.

I am a heavy duty library user--if I can borrow it, I don't buy it, until it is so used and useful that I need it, which isn't often.

This is a book my daughter has continued to check out, over and over, until all the renewals run out, and then puts another hold on right away. Very few books have received that honor in our house!

A great creative ideas for scrapbook and greeting card lettering. Helpful large format.

3 out of 5 stars thumbs basically up.......2005-10-09

I like the idea of using the pictures to help you create a title that interacts or compliments the pictures. I would have loved it in spiral book form so that you could lay it flat and trace the letters. some of the creative lettering is quite simple and not very appealing but some are really pretty and unique. the idea is this; find what you love or the theme of the pictures and insert it in your lettering. so, if its a picture of your child in a baseball game place drawings of baseballs on your letters...etc. bought it on the recommendation of a friend. intend on reading it and practicing the lettering more throughly but so far havent actually used it myself. nice extra touch for serious scrappers.

5 out of 5 stars A book to use over and over...........2003-09-22

I do scrapbooking and was never fond of the sticker letters, so on a whim I bought this book. Goodbye sticker letters! Your own lettering on the scrapbook page looks much nicer to me than the stickers and you never have to worry about running out of the alphabet letters or what color you need. These are very simple to do, I can fairly easily copy them, but I know I could never come up with them on my own. There is a great variety of lettering, each one having its own type of "mood" so you know when it is right for the page you are doing...fun, serious, kiddish, whatever. This book has been worth its weight and if you are bored of writing titles in plain block letters, this will really brighten up your titles.

5 out of 5 stars Creative Lettering: An Art Form All Its Own.......2003-07-27

This book is truly amazing. It is so helpful for making scrapbooks. Everyone marvels at the lettering job that this book has helped me with. I also have used the techniques to make signs and cards and things of that nature. A lot of creative lettering books that I have seen have really boring fonts, but this book has really really fun lettering styles. I mean, there are styles for Christmas, Halloween, flowery ones, Back To School, and just some really fun swirly ones. If you are into scrapbooking or just need something to help you make invitations for that big upcoming party, I really recommend buying this book. Unfortunately I lost my copy, but since I liked it so much I am going to buy it again! Enjoy!!!

4 out of 5 stars How to letter for those of us who lack the knack.......2003-04-24

There is a reason this is the standard in scrapbook lettering guides: it explains how to create those fancy letters in a simple, logical way that even people with atrocious handwriting can pick up quickly to improve their page layouts. All that , and it's cute, too!
It turns out that Becky Higgins' style of creative lettering is based on a simple alphabet that is adorned in one of six basic ways, then embellished and colored in. Yes, it really is that easy! Your titles and first paragraph letters can be customized according to season, color scheme, occasion, pattern match, mood, etc. The fifty variations on the six lettering styles will be more than enough for most people to fill their scrapbooks without seeming repetitive - but you may find yourself designing variations of your own after practicing for a while.

The limitation of The Art of Creative Lettering is that IMHO, the lettering styles lend themselves almost exclusively to a country and/or casual feel in the page designs. This is a popular way to scrapbook, and you may not need anything else. However, sometimes a more sophisticated, adult look is called for. And if like me you have a formal wedding and a heritage album to complete, you may end up turning to sticker letters or laser cut titles to get the traditional look you want.

I would highly recommend this book for anybody who believes s/he"can't" letter nicely.
