World-renowned fantasist Ray Bradbury has on several occasions stepped outside the arenas of horror, fantasy, and science fiction. An unabashed romantic, his first novel in 1957 was basically a love letter to his childhood. (For those who want to undertake an even more evocative look at the dark side of youth, five years later the author would write the chilling classic Something Wicked This Way Comes.)
Dandelion Wine takes us into the summer of 1928, and to all the wondrous and magical events in the life of a 12-year-old Midwestern boy named Douglas Spaulding. This tender, openly affectionate story of a young man's voyage of discovery is certainly more mainstream than exotic. No walking dead or spaceships to Mars here. Yet those who wish to experience the unique magic of early Bradbury as a prose stylist should find Dandelion Wine most refreshing. --Stanley Wiater
Book Description
The summer of '28 was a vintage season for a growing boy. A summer of green apple trees, mowed lawns, and new sneakers. Of half-burnt firecrackers, of gathering dandelions, of Grandma's belly-busting dinner. It was a summer of sorrows and marvels and gold-fuzzed bees. A magical, timeless summer in the life of a twelve-year-old boy named Douglas Spaulding--remembered forever by the incomparable Ray Bradbury.

Dandelion Wine.......2007-08-10
It was for my daughter. She likes to listen to books on tapes and CDs and read the book too. She was very happy with this item.
Not Bradbury's Best but a Fine Old World Novel........2007-07-30
This is the book I generally recommend to people who have not read Ray Bradbury before because it's not too complicated and yet still manages to have that spiritual, unearthly quality that all of his works are known for. And like all of his stories, this one is a bit on the wordy side. Ray is the king of description, but it would be only fair to say that he often gets carried away with too many details of surroundings and atmospheres that add nothing to the story but more words. On the other hand he probably gets paid by the word, so who could blame him?
The story takes place in Greentown, a setting he has used for other novels over the years such as "Something Wicked This Way Comes" and which is based on his own real life hometown in upstate Illinois. It's a story of two young brothers in a quintessential 1920's small town who go through the ups and downs of typical Americana small town life complete with oddball misfit neighbors and a doting grandmother. But there are thrills in store when a murderer is found to be on the lose.
A page turner to be sure.
Audio Version of This book.......2007-07-03
This audio version is just awful! You can not hear the actors voices and so you turn it up a bit. Still some voices are audible and others aren't. Then the worst part...the special effects sounds/noises. They are so loud they scare the crud out of you and drown out everything else. They where so loud they shook the walls. I got as far as 10 minutes into the first disc and had to turn it off. I have hundreds of books on CDs but this is the worst I've ever heard. Buy the book again or buy some other audio book. This one stinks!!!
I live in Waukegan.......2007-06-25
Although today's Waukegan (aka Green Town) is going through a rebirth as I write this, it's easy to picture Washington, Glen Rock, St James and Gennessee as Roads and Avenues while reading Dandelion Wine. Ray's ode to Waukegan is written with a great deal of LOVE. On a sunny day after reading the book, I went to each place. Most of it is still standing, but the area needs a boost.
The basic premise is 8 year old Douglas Spaulding lives life in Green Town and each experience is new to him. The book, I think, made Nostalgia fashionable. Twilight Zone copied it with the episode Walking Distance, so did Stephen King in the novella The Body, and The Wonder Years was written with similar themes. I could be wrong, but it started here with Dandelion Wine.
For anyone wanted to escape life's stresses or think of a time long gone, Dandelion Wine is for you. If only childhood could be so magical.
Unlike other readers who grew up reading this, I read it for the first time this year. This will become one of those books I read regularly.
Uncork and Inhale the Heady Aroma.......2007-06-12
I cannot add much in review of this classic novel, but I will quote a few wonderful lines that may lead you to read the book. Bradbury is magic.
"And some days, he went on, were days of hearing every trump and trill of the universe. Some days were good for tasting and some for touching. And some days were good for all the senses at once. This day now, he nodded, smelled as if a great and nameless orchard had grown up overnight beyond the hills to fill the entire visible land with its warm freshness. Their felt like rain, but there were no clouds. Momentarily, a stranger might laugh off in the woods, but there was silence...."

This is an excelent book lots of good recipes.I bought this book at lemans.com for 10.95 brand new.same book
Stuff you would have never guessed.......2000-05-20
The author writes in an easy to read style and is obviouslybiased towards the weed they love. recipes. END
A pleasant surprise!.......2000-04-03
I bought this book because my son has taken an interest in dandelions and I thought it would be fun to cook a few recipes for him. I was pleasantly surprised by all the information in the book - nutrition of dandelions is covered extensively, as well as some folklore on the plant and not to mention more recipes than I could try in a year. Ideas on how to extend the harvest are included as well.
My only negative thoughts - the author states that he has over 600 recipes for dandelions, but only shares a fraction of them! He has also written a book on daylillies, which I will definitely get.

A dish of lime-vanilla ice, please........2006-03-08
_While this story takes place in an Illinois Town of the 1920's, if you were born in a small to mid-sized town anywhere in North America, fifty years before or after, you will recognise much of the settings and feelings in this book. Bradbury captures eternal youth here, as only his poetic, Zen-like writing style can manage. The only other book that really equals it in this respect is Twain's _Huckleberry Finn_.
_There are small things in these stories that tug at your childhood memories and at your forgotten childhood soul (remember when you still had a soul, before you sold it?) I truly wonder at times if memories like this are still being made in the kind of post-modern world we've created for our children...
_Personally, I see this book, and its appreciation or non appreciation, as a marker indicator between Old America and the New America.

Can You Handle It?.......2007-10-10
I was absolutely taken by this novel's substance of love. It was hard for Vera to accept being loved by the heart of Taj. Being this was something out of the norm for her, she did the only thing she knew to do...push him away. This novel is filled with love, lust, and loneliness. I really, really enjoyed this story. This is one that should be a part of your library...

Flip It ***.......2007-06-20
I could not stop reading this book it a real tear jerker! Aunt Cookie and Uncle Boy really make the book. Must read
I Flipped Out!.......2007-04-11
This book was very entertaining in a happy way and sad way. Vera mother(Rowanda)is only 15 years old when she had her. Vera was born as a crack baby and put into the dumpster by Rowanda. Her Grandmother tried to raise her but she was a dope fiend also. Her grandmother dead on her and her mother gave her to Children Services.
But Auntie Cookie rescue her (saves her life)after she is put into children services. Her auntie rescue her from the system but not from her past. The more she tries to hate her mother for what she did to her. Auntie Cookie tells her and teaches her that "Whatever you may feel or say that is still your mother, regardless."
Vera finds herself unable to love because of her mother past and present actions until she runs across a doctor by the name of Taji. She puts him through pure Hell until she comes to grab with her demons.
Rowanda finds herself wanting her daughter love so bad that she cleans herself up to find rejection on the other ends that leads her back to the world of drugs.
This leave a part 2-Game Over-Which I have ordered already and waiting for it to come.
Pretty Good Read.......2007-01-24
I was pleasantly suprised by this book, its not your typical hood book. It was overall a pretty good read. I would give it 3.5 stars.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Format; Easy, Repetitious Puzzles.......2007-08-13
The format of this book is excellent. One puzzle per page provides ample room to work. The answers are on the flip side for ready reference, and the pages detach easily if you want to take just one or two with you. The book opens flat and has hard covers to lean on. Quality paper makes for easy erasing when necessary. If you're challenged by the beginning-of-the-week newspaper puzzles but don't like the accompanying lack of space and poor quality paper, you may like this book.
Unfortunately, the puzzles are much too easy for anyone who has worked through Peter Gordon's excellent "Mensa Guide to Solving Sudoku." Only basic techniques are required (one-choice, scanning, elimination, pairs, triplets). Don't expect X-wings or swordfishes, let alone advanced procedures such as forcing chains and XY wings. There isn't even much interaction, a technique commonly found in moderately difficult puzzles. In fact, the end-of-the-week newspaper puzzles (at least in my city) are significantly more challenging than the ones in this book.
Challenging puzzles!.......2007-07-28
This is a well put together book. The puzzles can either be kept together, or torn out of the book.
Puzzles are in large format (big grids) so there is space for notes.
A lot of interesting patterns formed by the "givens".
And lastly, the solution for each puzzle is on the back of the page it's on.
The puzzles can be easy to solve, or hard to solve. There are no difficulty ratings.
There is a book called "Crosswords on the Flip Side", and a book called "Super Sudoku on the Flip Side"
Really Good Sudoku Book.......2007-07-13
The best feature about this book is that it opens upward and you don't have to worry with keeping the book open to do the puzzle. So, it's the next best thing to a spiral bound book. Also, the pages are thick and of good quality, making it easy to erase without a lot of smudges. The puzzles are in big and bold print and the answers can be easily found on the back of the puzzle (which is good considering I don't like flipping to the back of the book and verifying solutions). So, if you're looking for a good Sudoku book, this is the one. The only con I have is that the puzzles are not rated in their level of difficulty, otherwise, good book.
I wanted another - so far it's the only one - boo........2006-10-12
I came to Amazon hoping to find this was a series of books - no such luck - so just like another reviewer, I may buy the same book again. The paper is excellent as one can erase and marks seem darker and easier to read. Those newspaper books get annoying for Sudoku figuring! The answers to each puzzle is right "on the flip side" so if you want to check a digit quickly, it's a piece of cake. Also real fun is the patterns that the author sets up - often as you solve, you'll see other patterns evolve - cool!
My Favorite!.......2006-10-11
This is my favorite Sudoku book of all - and I have a bunch! The best part of this book is not just the hard cover, but the puzzles are large enough to make readable notes and erasable without creating dirty, smeared pages. The puzzles (not rated) are hard enough to be interesting yet easy enough to keep me from throwing the book in the trash out of frustration! I may even buy the book again just for the comfort of its size, layout and quality of paper. I mean, like who can remember a sudoku puzzle solution from a week ago? Not me! A great change from crosswords and logic puzzles.

With quotes from writers, artists, actors, and more, these cryptograms are fun!
Customer Reviews:
Buyer beware - New format but same old quotes from another Sterling book.......2007-06-09
Sterling has once again put their energy behind a clever format and have completely forgotten why we love cryptograms - breaking a NEW code and having a chuckle over some clever NEW quote. NEW is the key here. This book is simply a shuffling of tired quotes they used in another book- Classic Cryptogtramns. Come on Sterling......go to Google and type QUOTES. To open a new book on crypotograms only to find that I just solved them in another book by the same publisher is a bit shabby.

Every one—even the cranium-crushers—is perfectly sized for a short trip.
Book Description
Search and solve—with nearly 160 puzzles here, there’s plenty of brain-stimulating pleasure to be had! Each one of these entertaining word searches focuses on a particular subject, with many arranged in a shape suitable to the topic. For example, “Hitting Below the Belt” looks like a pair of shorts, and the words refer to things worn at or below the waist, like swimming trunks and skirt. The shamrock-shaped “Greenery Scenery” goes green with mint, moss, and Kermit the Frog. And “Things to Do While Sitting” includes fly a plane and check e-mail. All the puzzles contain a word list to guide you as you look, as well as the answers if there are a few you can’t find.
