Very very enjoyable.......2007-06-11
More of the story of young Sidhartha struggling with his posh prince place in a strongly caste system, and his fear of death and suffering. An 'enlightened' Sidartha fights against the caste system, which is paramount to treason, and slowly learns his true place in all things.

Book Description
The second volume in an eight-volume set detailing the epic of Siddharta's life and times.
Customer Reviews:
If Volume One was fantastic..........2006-08-13
This second volume exceeds its predecessor in terms of overall power. Unlike Volume One, the character of Siddhartha is squarely in the center of this work, and Tezuka does a great job in making this character likeable and human, steering far clear of pious platitudes and stock situations. While ending with the death of Bandaka and the rushed birth of his son, Devadetta, the future nemesis of the Buddha, this Volume both delights and entertains.
Brilliant!.......2005-07-19
The graphic novel medium is perfect to share Tezuka's adaptation of the Buddha's life. While reading this, you can sense the artist's love and joy in having created such an intricate and complexly interwoven story. The detail and care taken in drawing some of the pictures is absolutely incredible. And, Tezuka's drawing style is always a blast to look at. Not necessarily for children, but certainly worthwhile for young adults and up, these books do not have anything vaguely resembling a "religious" or overtly moral feel to them. There is sadness, joy, history, sex, violence, profanity, redemption and liberation. The artist allows the reader to digest the understanding of the lessons for themselves without spoon feeding it to them. There arent many details on the Buddha's upbringing and there certainly aren't many comic books on the Buddha's life (are there any?), but this set effectively communicates one mans interpretation of the "The Awakened One". If you're looking for a great graphic novel that will be tons of fun to read and encourage you to see life differently, this is a wonderful addition to your collection. If you're looking for a fun way of understanding the life, culture and teaching of the Buddha, this is THE way to do it.
Funny and yet..........2004-06-14
There was some substance to the book and yet at the same time it managed to stay funny which is a rarity if I do say so my self. I am not particularly a fan of manga art but I loved this book, story and art work and I read both volume one and volume 2 without setting them down. Now I just have to get my hands on the third one :)
Our family read it non-stop, cover to cover.......2003-12-27
Our family read this book and it's companion, Kapilavastu, cover-to-cover, just about non-stop. They were both totally engaging.
As a Buddhist, I was wondering what this treatment of the Buddha's life would be like. This is my first exposure to manga style. My only reference point is comic books. I had enjoyed another "comic book," illustrated treatment of the life of a Buddhist saint, Milarepa. That was well done. I very much wanted a book that would capture the interest of my two children, 10 and 14 years old. It did. My 14 year old read the book in two days. My 10 year old and I read it aloud together.
What is facinating is the way the author creates the historical context using a mixture of historical figures and people of his own imagination. We are given an insight to the caste system of ancient India and the stage is set for the Buddha's questions about suffering, it's origins, and his strong desire to put an end to suffering.
I'd say that this is appropriate for 9 year olds and up. For adults: my wife and I kept reading ahead. It is captivating. It has the air of an adventure story. I also enjoyed explaining and discussing the context of the story with my children.
Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
Sweeping Vision of the Buddha's Time.......2003-12-13
I read a lot of books on Buddhism (I even write some), but, alas, very few have pictures. This elegant (if one is allowed to use such an adjective to describe a graphic novel) series from Vertical of course goes way beyond "pictures." It tells the story of the Buddha and, in effect, the society he came from, through the expansive envisioning of Tezuka, The Man of La Manga. (Sorry, couldn't resist the pun. In case you don't know, "manga" means "graphic novel" in Japanese, and Tezuka really is The Man, having pretty well created the genre). So it's not about a text with pictures, it's about telling the story of the Buddha as a *vision*, rather than as a collection of words. It works.
Seriously, volume two carries on the dual track of intriguing characters who illustrate overarching themes, bringing them to life in a way that mere text almost never does. These are not scholarly books, by any means, but they depict the cultural milieu from which the Buddha and Buddhism arose. We haven't yet gotten to where Tezuka lets the Buddha expound the dharma, but, if he follows his established pattern, he's going to get things pretty straight.
I'm really looking forward to future volumes this series and think a whole range of others will soon be waiting with me.
Product Description
A four-year story of ongoing encounters between the author, Sali Sheppard-Wolford and a group of Bigfoot that played in her yard and thunderously walked by her house in the dead of night.
Four years of encounters with a group of Bigfoot in Orting, Washington. Investigations of Bigfoot and other strange phenomena in the area. In addition to the Bigfoot encounters, Sheppard-Wolford describes her spirit journeys with the Indian guide, Dream Walker, and investigations of other strange phenomena near Orting, including an old UFO crash where the old newspapers reporting the crash have mysteriously disappeared and spirit lights that appeared on the ridge above the river.

Valley of the Skookum.......2007-10-03
A very well written book. Although I dont follow the "UFO-BIgfoot" crowd, I very much enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone interested in the big guy. As other reviewers have stated, I didnt want to put it down and want the story not to end. A very nice break from the repeated stories you find in most "Bigfoot" books. It will make a nice addition to my collection.
Thank Sal
GREAT!!.......2007-09-30
I bought this book after hearing Autumn Williams talk about it on her documentury. I loved it. Sent it home and my wife read it. She loved it. Then my grandmother read it. She loved it. Enough said!
A really good book.......2007-05-12
Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down, finishing it in two days!! It was quite well written, and done in a very simple, straightforward style that didn't attempt to hide or confuse the subject.
If this is truly representative of the kind of long-term contacts rural people have with Bigfoot and similar creatures, it represents a nearyly ignored aspect of research into this area of cryptozoology. More books like this are absolutely necessary to the discipline, as this is where the REAL action is going on.
Beautifully Written But Steps Into Dangerous Territory.......2007-05-11
Sali Sheppard-Wolford seems likeable enough, and her talent for writing is very obvious. A story that holds you spellbound, but events similar to those found in B. Ann Slate and Alan Berry's "Bigfoot" are called to mind. See my recent review of that book to better understand. Strange events even started to occur in my own home during the reading of this book, like footsteps in the middle of the night, and the television set turning on by its self at loud volume. Very dangerous ground to trod on. Read only with much prayer and faith in God. Proceed with caution.
Fascinating Story..........2007-04-27
Once I started to read this book, I was unable to put it down til the end. I liked this book very much.. Sali Sheppard-Wolford seems to be an open minded and open hearted person. This is most likely why she has experienced extraordinary events in her life that the majority of us never will. Incredible but also believable to me.
Book Description
With a goal of awakening her readers' obligation to the health of the planet and its creatures, Patricia Pereira presents her fourth interplanetary transcription of lessons offered by energies inhabiting the Arcturian Star system. This final volume of the series focuses on preparing humanity to assume galactic citizenship.
Customer Reviews:
incredibly powerful and eloquent book.......2002-08-11
This is the last of a four volume set, and I'm nearly finished with it. They are all incredibly good. Perhaps the best books I've read in my life, and I've read roughly 25 books on Buddhism, Christianity, new age scientific, and spiritual subjects over the last 3-4 years. I've never read a four volume set of anything in my life.
In general each of her books is better than the previous, presumably because she is becoming a better "channel", but I wouldn't skip the earlier books. Each book has a more refined and subtly conveyed message than the previous. The final volume holds to this pattern.
Its a very improbable story, her story. However, her personel story is only ancillary. Regardless of whether you believe her assertion of the source, the eloquence of the prose and the spiritual message are incredibly powerful. To make a point, not intending to denigrate Patricia's previous proffession in any way, I will say, "you will eventually come to realize that it would be impossible for a medical transcriptionist in Boise to write these books." I don't believe I have ever sensed a deeper commitment to unwavering compassion towards all sentient beings in any book, except perhaps the Dalia Lama's.
Unique, informative, fascinating, metaphysical reading........2000-06-05
Arcturian Songs Of The Masters Of Light is volume four of the "Arcturian Star Chronicles", channeled communications received and transmitted by Patricia Pereira, a woman who is a consciously aware, multidimensional telepath in communion with spirit beings of the star Arcturus during her daily meditations. Arcturian Songs Of The Masters Of Light is recommended reading for students of metaphysics with a special interest in channeling, spirit being transmissions, and contemporary extraterrestrial communication.

Book Description
The Torah's text, the first five books of the Bible, dictated to Moses by Yahweh on Mount Sinai about 3400 years ago, contains throughout its chapters multiple encoded names of those 12 alien beings identified in crop circles, the Anunnaki of Nibiru (10th solar system planet), who established all human civilizations. The main gods of those various religions are also encoded in the Torah, found very close in the encrypted text with the corresponding Anunnaki names from the ruling Council of 12. Their home planet's name, 'Nibiru,' and the biblical version, 'Olam,' are encoded in the Torah close to all 12 Anunnaki names. The terms 'cropcircle' and OlamUFO's' are also found encoded, along with 'Mars Face' and all related descriptions of it such as 'Earth, gold, discoverer, Nibiru, hero, king, Alalu, Mars and carve'. Customer Reviews:
Aw, now I want a raven........2007-07-09
I think I'm the one person on the planet who hasn't read a lot of Mercedes Lackey books. I've only read "Children of the Night" which is a VERY different book than this one.
I really liked how the book so thoroughly immerses you into the time frame, the social dynamics and the etiquette of the era. Ms. Lackey nicely weaves the fantasy elements into the historical realities of the period. I also appreciated how she discussed true evil as a lack of emotion, rather than rage and fire.
The book did leave me wondering how truly nasty the very nasty villain would have been if she had been born a man.
I think I'll take a trip to the Tower of London and think very hard at the ravens now.
Children with paranormal talents.......2007-03-28
The novel deals with school environment of talented children and thuss is of special interest. It's fantasy of an ideal school and good teachers, and it gives good mind and feelings to the reader, who can correlate it to her's ovn reality of the past. A nice story, with good characters, activities and environments. I recomend it to all ages, young and elder people
Magic.......2007-03-10
Most books written by Mercedes Lackey will be viewed as magic to any person that enjoys fantasy. The Wizard of London is no where short of her best. She knows how to twist old story board schemes and give us a wonder.
One of my favorites.......2007-02-25
The reviewers who nit-pick about the Elemental Masters books are probably the people who need to absorb the humanity of those books.
Fascinating Book.......2007-02-16
I was attracted to this book because of the title. London is my favourite city and anything that has a reference to it, has an irresistable pull for me. So even if I chose the book for the wrong reasons, it still turned out to be good. Having only read 'Rediscovery' in the darkover series which Lackey co-authored, it was definitely new for me. And it was definitely a riveting and fascinating read because of the aura it surrounds you with. There is humour, subtle and sharp - and there is detail with crispness and clearness like a cold winter morning. You never feel the absence of a master plot, but the lack of it makes you take notice of the details of each situation that rises to meet you. Definitely a must read for all the people who love Darkover books

Book Description
A great deal is happening in London this season.
For starters, there's the witch who tried to poison Kate at Sir Hilary's induction into the Royal College of Wizards. (Since when does hot chocolate burn a hole straight through one's dress?!)
Then there's Dorothea. Is it a spell that's made her the toast of the town--or could it possibly have something to do with the charm-bag under Oliver's bed?
And speaking of Oliver, just how long can Cecelia and Kate make excuses for him? Ever since he was turned into a tree, he hasn't bothered to tell anyone where he is!
The girls might think it all a magical nightmare . . . if only they weren't having so much fun.
Customer Reviews:
Two romances, two mysteries, and two captivating heroines all in one book. - Bookwyrm Chrysalis Review.......2007-08-12
Two romances, two mysteries, and two captivating heroines all in one book. Written as a letter game between Patricia C. Wrede and Caroline Stevermer, these two excellent young adult fantasy writers created a captivating Regency England where magic is a part of life and a misunderstood science.
Kate Talgarth and Cecelia Rushton are two Young Ladies of Quality who are cousins and were inseparable until this London Season. Split apart by their aunts, who fear for the safety of London if the two girls were unleashed on society at the same time, Kate goes off to London with her sister, while Cecy is left in the Country. The two correspond via letters as their stories unfold. In Town, Kate is nearly poisoned by a mysterious woman, while back in the Country, Cecy finds a charm bag under her brother's bed and a new young lady becomes suspiciously popular in local society. When it seems like the new girl's feared step-mother and Kate's poisoner are the same woman, the cousins begin to piece together their oddly connected mysteries. Between London and the Country, the odd coincidences build up as the two girls are drawn into a deadly power play.
Cute, quick, and clever, the reader will enjoy this book until the last word. The use of language and description draws us into the time period. My only concern with the book is that the characters tend to blend together.
I must say, I don't really like the cover. Or, more specifically, I don't like the art of Kate and Cecy on the cover. The faces look odd, with a very nineties American comic art styling that seems out of place. Otherwise, the use of black and white, along with the blue chocolate pot, entices the reader. Another thing I do like about the cover is the fact that the spine looks like a fantasy book, incorporating gold and black, along with the chocolate pot. To me, that's an important element, because at large book stores the most you get to see on the shelf is the spine. Unless the spine makes me want to pull the book out and take a look, I might accidentally walk by a really great book with an ordinary title.
The third Sorcery and Cecilia book just came out, so now is a great time to see these two from their first Season to parenthood. The Grand Tour takes place right after this book ends, and The Mislaid Magician moves ahead ten years.
Even if you don't care for Regencies..........2007-08-10
...and, generally speaking, I don't (the authors in their dedication credit Jane Austen, Georgette Heyer, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Ellen Kushner for inspiring them to create it), you'll find yourself caught up in this bright, intrigue-filled alternate-Universe epistolary tale. Cousins and best friends Cecelia "Cecy" Rushton and Katharine "Kate" Talgarth get involved in a magical rivalry in a Regency England where magic works (though we don't get much in the way of explanation as to how, or what its limitations are) when Kate falls afoul of Miranda Griscomb, a sorceress who is a great deal more (and more sinister) than she seems and is in league with their neighbor, Sir Hilary Bedrick (recently elevated to the Royal College of Wizards), to drain the magical power of the Mysterious Marquis, Edward Schofield. (If that sounds confusing, it is at first; the cast is, to say the least, somewhat Dickensian, and you may find it necessary to keep a list of who's who!) Meanwhile Kate befriends Dorothea Griscomb, Miranda's stepdaughter, and begins plotting to foil Miranda's plans to have her marry the "odious" Marquis in favor of matching her up with Robert Penwood, who loves her. And, of course, both girls end up betrothed to men they would never have looked at twice if not for the series of events that threw them together. (What else would you expect in a Regency, after all?) The idiom is so authentic that you may actually find yourself pulling up short at an unfamiliar use of a word. Kate and Cecy are delightful characters, each one an individual and both with a tendency to be just a bit unconventional and more than a little headstrong; I think it takes a good deal of skill to indicate such things when you're telling a story through the voice of your character. Whether they live in the same Universe as the characters of Wrede's two Mairelon books Mairelon the Magician and Magician's Ward is unclear, though I suspect they may. What's especially delightful is that (according to the authors' postscript) the book began as a game of Persona Letters, in which each participant assumes an epistolary identity and writes his/her alter ego's adventures without revealing to the other what future twists and turns might be planned--and without knowing what the other one may be planning to do with the *other* alter ego! Having read it, you're sure to want to sample the sequels, The Grand Tour and The Mislaid Magician or Ten Years After; I've just added all three to my Wish List. You may also enjoy these two alternate-Regency/fantasies by Andre Norton & Rosemary Edghill: The Shadow of Albion (Carolus Rex, Bk 1) and Leopard in Exile (Carolus Rex, Book 2)
interesting period piece.......2007-07-21
Action-wise it is not in the league of Harry Potter, but for anyone who is also interested in atmosphere, and Old English Atmosphere, a highly recommended book
great read!.......2007-06-07
For all those who love Harry Potter and Jane Austin, this book is for you! Wrede melds fantasy with the 19th century novel effortlessly. The text is rich with references to 19th century English culture. My particular favorite is the reference to Radcliffe's novels,(for anyone who's read Northanger Abby will understand!)
Simply Magical.......2007-06-05
I loved this Jane Austen combined with Harry Potter of a book. I thoroughly enjoyed the style of writing and the "game" the authors established has become one of my own personal favorites. Being able to adopt a persona and communicate letters through that character is a magical way to stimulate the imagination. Not only creating a book in such a way, but reading a book through the form of letters is fun and interesting. I could not believe how I got sucked into these books. All three of thier current novels are wonderous and come highly recomended by me.
Book Description
Do you believe in magic?
Timothy Hunter is just like any other thirteen-year-old boy in London . . . except for the tiny fact that he might be the most powerful magician of his time.
Tim has decided to finally tell his best friend Molly the truth about his magical destiny. But things get complicated when a familiar visitor from another realm shows up -- someone determined to have his revenge on the great Timothy Hunter, whatever the cost.
Customer Reviews:
A Little Better Than The Rest.......2004-01-26
So far this series has seen some stripped-down versions of comic books and a magician (Timothy Hunter) who really doesn't do anything. Well, in this book, Timothy plays a more active role and actually works some magic.
Timothy has two main issues to work out. The first is how to tell Molly about his magic as he has no other secrets from her. The second is to deal with the fact that all of his old beliefs are coming true.
Add one character from the previous book who thinks Tim has done him wrong and the plot is set. No real tension, even when an important character has his soul stolen.
If you like the previous books, you will like this one, but if you prefer the comics than this one is closer than the rest.

Young Marianne Ransom is astonishing for her beauty, intelligence, and courageous spirit, all of which she needs to help her survive as an orphan on the streets of Victorian London. Soon, her trusting naivete leads her to the luxurious mansion of a wealthy duchess. Meanwhile, Marianne discovers her own gift that will have unexpected consequences not only for her, but for those around her: psychic powers.

Did anyone else notice?.......2005-01-26
The character of Bagstock changed names two pages after he was introduced and was called Bagshot throughout the rest of the book. At the very least, that's a red flag for me and I should have put the book down then, wondering if the book's editor ever woke up. Apparently, said editor was asleep through most of the task...this is a tediously written book. The only good thing I can say about the experience is at least I didn't pay full price for it. I couldn't even finish it, it was so bad, although I skimmed the last half to see if it ever picked up. It didn't.
Just the worst Barbara Michaels' novel.......2004-01-16
I have read about 8 of this author's books. Just about all have kept me totally engrossed and expected the same reaction to The Wizard's Daughter. BUT it is totally banal - I just could not believe it was by the same author. Totally unbelievable plot and insipid heroine.
Sweet, Innocent and Spiritual.......2001-04-24
I've read this before and I remembered that there was a surprise ending and it was overall, a sweet tale. Upon rereading this book, I again reiterate: sweet tale, surprise ending. A story of an innocent country girl, drawn by circumstance into a world of spiritualism and seances. A world of the corrupt and of the decrepit, which has trouble believing our heroines innocence and honesty. I love stories that point out all the "peculiarities" of the upper crust, their eccentricities and their evils. Help from Jane Austen here, I think. I hate to stuff Ms. Michaels into a stereotype, but this is one of her "bits of fluff". Not at all insulting, mind you. This is just the sort of tale I enjoy reading at times. The "Wizard's Daughter" is a good "bit of fluff," and I recommend it most emphatically. Expect to be entertained!
Sheer agony..........2001-01-22
Let me say up front, I don't typically read this genre. So keep that in mind when you read my comments. Now for my comments:
This was one of the hardest books I've ever listened to. On more than one occasion I started to just give up and call it a loss. But I kept listening hoping it would get better; it didn't. I purchased the book based upon its synopsis and other reviews. But quite frankly, after forcing myself to listen to it, I can sum it up by saying, this book was boring.
The pace is too slow, and contrary to the synopsis, there's no "earthly terror" to be found here. However, there is mystery but it's no great mystery. And what there was, was unraveled so slowly that I really didn't care about the outcome. To top it off, most of the characters weren't interesting including the main one, Marianne. She was more of an irritant with her simpering ways, than anything else. The setting is dreary, and the story, yawn... Rather than bash this book, I'll end here and say this was definitely not my cup of tea. I prefer books that have either interesting characters and events, or action. This book lacked both.
Vivid, memorable narration of a rich, gothic novel........2000-06-05
Barbara Michaels' Wizard's Daughter is narrated by Norma West, whose extensive acting experience displays a vivid, memorable voice here. Ghostly seances, romance and orphan Marianne's experiences in Victorian London blend in a rich gothic novel.
