Book Description

‘The best reason to study Hellenistic art is for its own sake’ writes Professor Pollitt in the Preface to Art in the Hellenistic Age. ‘But’, he continues, ‘I would suggest that there is an additional quality that should make the art of the Hellenistic age of particular interest to modern audiences: the fact that in background and content it was the product of an age in many ways similar to our own … The result of the historical conditions (of the age) was an art which, like much modern art, was heterogenous, often cosmopolitan, increasingly individualistic, and frequently elite in its appeal’. This book is an interpretative history of Greek art during the Hellenistic period - i.e. from the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC, to the establishment of the Roman Empire at the end of the first century BC - which also explores ways in which that art is an expression of the cultural experience and aspirations of the Hellenistic age.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source of Art History.......2006-02-25

I used this as a text book. It is well illustrated, though in black and white only. It has a particular focus on the art inspired by Alexander the Great as one would expect. Even for a Art History beginner like me the text was fairly accessable.

      Book Description

Hellenistic philosophers and scholars laid the foundations upon which Western tradition developed analytical grammar, linguistics, philosophy of language and other disciplines. Building on the pioneering work of Plato, Aristotle and earlier thinkers, they developed a wide range of theories about the nature and origin of language. Ten essays explore the ancient theories, their philosophical adequacy, and their impact on later thinkers from Augustine through the Middle Ages.

        Book Description

Most of the grandiose and often ostentatious Hellenistic monumental tombs were power- fully expressive and symbolic structures, built to glorify and display the wealth and power of kings, queens, nobles, and other persons of influence or to serve as shrines for the worship of the heroized dead. They were inventive in design and form, created to demonstrate the achievements of the dead in a public architecture of permanence and durability.

This lavishly illustrated monograph brings together previously scattered information about Hellenistic funerary monuments and Janos Fedak's own research on the exterior architecture of these impressive structures in the Mediterranean region. The author first establishes a typology of main tomb forms and then considers some of the predecessors of the Hellenistic tombs. He explores the variations of form that resulted from differences in climate, building materials, and social and religious customs. Adherence to strong local traditional practice in building is visible in each region, but new ideas and novel funerary architecture were welcomed everywhere in the Hellenistic world. Fedak's wide-ranging approach makes the work of interest not only to specialists in Greek architecture and archaeologists but also to students of classical studies and historians of art and religion.

                    Product Description

The Hellenistic Age links classical Greece with imperial Rome. Hellenistic man was preeminently a citizen of the world: the narrow limits of the city-state had given way to the boundless oikumene. In the old cities of Greece, in Italy, Asia Minor, and the new courts set up by the Hellenistic dynasties between the death of Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar, the period was marked by masterpieces which combined elegant craftsmanship with intense emotional force. At the same time, architecture benefited from the advances in mathematics and engineering. Theatres, gymnasia, temples, porticoes and colonades were built in cities old and new. In sculpture, the spirit of the age revealed itself in such works as the famous Lacocoon and the Winged Victory from Samotrache (now in the Louvre). The author considers, in addition to these activities, the achievements of the Hellenistic Age in mosaic work, painting, terra-cottas, masks, coinage and book illustration. Professor T.B.L. Webster is a Professor of Greek Studies at University College in London, England, and the author of many books on Greek art and literature. Professor Webster examines the intellectual and political background of the Hellenistic Age and distinguishes between the early, middle and late periods. He demonstrates that while the styles of Early Hellenistic art continues from its origins in the 4th Century BC, new developments emerged in realistic portraiture and pastoral art. The book is lavishly illustrated with 56 full-color plates and 80 black and white illustrations, 276 pages, along with maps, a chronological table, glossary introduction and index.

3 out of 5 stars Not very satisfying.......2006-06-08

Not a lot of information in this book (i.e. 'tiny lines must be drawn with an inky or soupy like substance'. However the book does not tells you how to get this substance. Water, a medium or what and how much?).

Much book space has been spent on showing paintings.

                    5 out of 5 stars A "Must-Have".......2002-02-03

If you can only purchase one book on acrylic painting, this is the one to have. The author covers every aspect of painting from landscape (trees, leaves, bushes, rocks, etc.) to portrait painting. She covers the types of brushes and how they are used. This book has everything I was looking for and more. There are some nice illustrations to follow. I'm so glad I purchased it!

I like all of Cathy Johnson's books, but this one is my favorite. It is very practical, understandable, and well illustrated. Although anyone would enjoy it, this book is especially beneficial to someone just beginning to paint with watercolors. It deals with the basics. I love it.

I do not have an extensive art background. Without becoming arcane, the author gives sufficient knowledge and support TO GET YOU GOING. This is the right book for someone who wants to try watercolor but lacks the art background and/or the creative support one would get from an instructor.

This book is great for reference as well as a gift to anyone wanting to explore watercolor! We are given examples and methods as well as how to shop for your supplies. I am giving this to my mom for Mother's Day. I highly recommend this book for anyone at any level.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......1998-07-23

A great book for the person who wants to try a new medium, or begin painting for the first time. Cathy Johnson's step by step instructional demos and great sense of humor make you want to get in there and just do it. The instructions are VERY clear and easy to understand--she never assumes you know what any given painting term means.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best painting books!.......2002-09-27

I have been painting for a few years, and I love the way this book breaks down the steps of painting. It is helpful to know a little color theory before using this book, but if you are comfortable mixing your colors, you'll be having a good time immediately. DeMore even gives formulas for some of the color mixing she does, which is helpful if you are a beginner. This is a fun and knowledge-filled book. It also helped me to know that Louise DeMore hasn't been an artist since birth. She has a degree in mathematics. This gives me hope that even I can be a good artist, as I embark on my full-blown art career! The book is filled with wonderful advice on how to paint: that you should make mistakes in order to learn, that you should paint faster than you are comfortable with, and that you should have fun. It is absolutely wonderful! I keep reading it and reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners.......2001-10-19

This book teaches the basic and simple oil painting techniques for any new inspiring painters. The book also helps you get right down to it. As a beginner I am well aware that one has to start something that is very basic and easy before getting into paintings that are more complex and detailed. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars sparkle, but no depth..........2003-08-13

The only reason to buy the book is the list of suppliers in the back. The only list I've found so far for paints which are safe for use on skin.

                    I found this book disapointing.
The photos are beautiful, but too much space is used on 'lick-and-stick' tatoos. One was more than enough.
If you can't figure out how to apply them from the instuctions on the card, you have a problem...

More images of body paint or henna would have been appropriate.

The book also promised tips on makeup and hair, I found the styles mundane and the instructions mediocre .

1 out of 5 stars Body Art for the Teenage Girl.......2002-01-08

If you are a teenage girl looking for a way to shock your parents, this book will definately assist you. Or, if you live in a trailer park, this is the book for you. Not a good book for a person who takes thier tattoos and peircings serious. The book was serious and trivial, but in all seriousness I am sure most high school girls would love it -- OK, at least the "bad" girls.

                    3 out of 5 stars Amusingly cute.......2001-11-03

The cover photo immortalizes the teen-glitter-glam pop princess overkill look of the late '90s. Unfortunately, most of the inside isn't that glamorous, featuring a number of body-art ideas that are unlikely to appeal to even the most fearless fashion experimenters (barcode temporary tattoos? yuck!). Still, some of the tips are informative, and some of the photos are cute enough to appeal to Spicemania nostalgists. Probably a good stocking-stuffer for younger teens who are uninhibited by notions of good taste.

3 out of 5 stars Diverse Body Art.......2001-01-17

This book shows examples of diverse range of body art which is available. It is divided into a number of distinct areas which include tattoos, henna, nail art, bindi, body jewels, body paint, hair design and piercing. The body art on display covers small areas of the body, such as, the face, eyes, belly button, shoulder, wrist, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Body Art Chic.......2000-04-13

This book was pretty cool it showed me how to do all these things with my hair you know new and modern kinda stuff I liked that part. It also gave me some tips on piercing stuff on my own some sterilization tecniques and stuff that was a life saver cause I didn't get an infection. it also tells you how to draw those awsome designs on your hands and draw little forehead orniments. I gave this book only 4 stars cause some of the intstructions are confusing.

5 out of 5 stars Painting Heads and Faces (First Steps) by Pat Clarke.......2000-10-08

I have been a collector of Pat Clarke's books for a number of years.
This is an excellent face study book. The author has many enlarged
drawings and close-ups of color placement. I like her line drawings,
they are quite precise. This is a very good book for beginners or
experienced painters who would like to try face paintings. She gives
color set-ups for all the portraits and it is especially nice to have
color set-ups for many ethnic skintones. I have personally have done
quite well following her techniques. I am especially fond of her
sweet paintings of children. This book makes an excellent additon to
                    a painters reference library.

The well-known teacher-artist helps students to learn techniques by producing actual sketches, studies and watercolour paintings in this inspiring and practical guide. The first section covers all the practical aspects of watercolour painting; the second section is more challenging, requiring students to take a little more initiative and develop their own style; and the third shows how to paint the many different elements of the landscape.
