Book Description
Soft X-rays have great potential for use in a wide variety of applications, including the semiconductor industry and the life sciences. X-Rays from Laser Plasmas: Generation and Applications focuses exclusively and in detail on the science and technology of soft X-rays produced with non-synchrotron sources. Using a minimum of mathematical formulae, it discusses how such X-rays can be efficiently and economically generated from plasmas produced by lasers, and how they interact with matter. Authored by Dr Edmond Turcu, one of the pioneers in this field, X-Rays from Laser Plasmas: Generation and Applications will be of great interest to a wide variety of readers, including all those working in X-ray lithography, microscopy, and radiobiology.

Excellent Text.......2004-04-26
Very informative, and well written book. Wish I had bought it sooner. I've spent $1000s on professional publications from SPIE, AIP, and others and I find myself grabbing this text first. If working with plasma based X-ray generation is up your alley, go straight to this book for the quick and dirty.

Book Description
The study and application of electronic materials has created an increasing demand for sophisticated and reliable techniques for examining and characterizing these materials. This comprehensive book looks at the area of x-ray diffraction and the modern techniques available for deployment in research, development, and production. It provides the theoretical and practical background for applying these techniques in scientific and industrial materials characterization. The main aim of the book is to map the theoretical and practical background necessary to the study of single crystal materials by means of high-resolution x-ray diffraction and topography. It combines mathematical formalisms with graphical explanations and hands-on practical advice for interpreting data.

A review.......2000-11-01
This is a new generation book. Most books available in the field cover the whole history of the X-ray scattering theories and applications. Then, specific applications that are very important in our days for industries and scientific researches are not properly treated. This book does begin where other related books have finished. The issues covered are not found anywhere else together, in a same volume, as they are here. It is fundamental to the new era of materials characterization.

A Star Warrior Portrait.......2000-11-21
This book presents one aspect of the Strategic Defense Initiative: namely, the role of Edward Teller in the formation of X-ray lasers and Smart Pebbles. If you are looking for general coverage of SDI, this book is probably not for you. However, this book does present the Teller angle thoroughly and well. It portrays the scientist and his actions in the context of his psyche, the political environment in which he operated, and through the eyes of the scientists who participated in the program.
The reader will come away from this book with a much better appreciation for the factors that went into some of the major decisions affecting SDI. Broad covers the technical aspects of his subject matter, without alienating those of us who are not nuclear physicists, which I suspect represents a large percentage of the population.

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A203083. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Electro-optic techniques for analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) are being developed for wideband signal collection and analysis. They have the capability of being used for direct signal reception and ADC at an antenna. A fundamental requirement for these designs is a high-frequency optical pulse train with uniform amplitude and pulse spacing. A mode-locked fiber laser can provide pulse rates and pulse widths suitable for these high bandwidth applications. In this thesis an accurate method for calculating and characterizing with the amplitude and timing jitters of the NPS active mode- locked sigma laser was designed and demonstrated. The method utilizes a wide bandwidth photodetector and a microwave spectrum analyzer to obtain data for analysis. Labview 4.0 software was used to extract and store the data displayed on the spectrum analyzer. Matlab 5.1 software was then used to analyze the Labview data and to perform calculations for the amplitude and temporal jitter. Measurements were made for a microwave sweep oscillator and a cw generator, then again with the fiber laser operating with each signal source. Final measurements were taken with variable laser diode pump powers by varying the controller currents. Results show that the calculation of the laser jitter is not dependent on the upper limit of the noise power integral calculation above 10 kHz; however, the jitter is highly dependent on the value of the lower frequency limit and decreases dramatically as the lower limit is increased. Laser amplitude jitter was found to decrease by 30% and timing jitter by 0.

All papers were peer-reviewed for this proceedings volume. The conference focused on atomic physics relevant to plasmas, and plasma science dependent on atomic processes, from either a modeling or diagnostics point of view. Also, an exciting breakthrough discovery was first announced at this conference on a new antihydrogen formation technique. Topics include the relatively mature research areas of atomic structure and collisions, atomic kinetics, laser-produced plasmas, magnetic- and inertial-confinement fusion, Z-pinches, opacities and equation of state, lighting, and astrophysics, as well as the burgeoning areas of warm dense matter simulations and ultracold plasmas used, for example, in the recent formation of antihydrogen.

Amazon.com Audio Review
Renowned for its superior productions, BBC radio may have outdone itself by adapting Stephen King's Pet Sematary to audio. A clamorous cacophony of talking, whining, whistling, and howling, Pet Sematary is a quick, entertaining earful for those who don't have other auditory distractions to contend with, such as a car full of talking whining, whistling, howling children. However, the melodramatic prose marries well with the acting; such is the case when one reader--whose voice bears an uncanny resemblance to Kramer's from Seinfeld--tells another about the effects of the Pet Sematary: "Heroin makes junkies feel good when they put it in their arms, but all the time it's poisoning their mind and body--this place can be like that and don't you ever forget it!" (Running time: three hours, two cassettes)
Book Description
"Sometimes dead is better...."
When the Creeds move into a beautiful old house in rural Maine, it all seems too good to be true: physician father, beautiful wife, charming little daughter, adorable infant son -- and now an idyllic home. As a family, they've got it all...right down to the friendly cat.
But the nearby woods hide a blood-chilling truth -- more terrifying than death itself...and hideously more powerful.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
This is the creepiest horror novel that I have ever read. My wife tells me she heard an interview with him once that said he actually scared himself writing this. That has to be pretty hard to do if you are Stephen King.
I am not volunteering to read this book again, I think, as he just might have done too good a job with it.
Merciless Stephen King--God Save Us.......2007-07-29
Here's another textbook example of a classic, horrifying book, written by the master of the genre, that was absolutely destroyed in its film adaptation. The good news, as King himself has been wont to say (and here I'm paraphrasing), the book is still there, notwithstanding the quality (or lack thereof) of the movie. Woe unto all those who know King only through Hollywood. The real measure of the master is in the printed page, never more so than in Pet Sematary.
The great thing about this book is something that you rarely come across in this age of pop-culture saturization, remade motion pictures, genre slavery (of which I am unapologetically guilty), and the like: a wholly original idea. As far as my limited experience tells, no one has ever had a thought like this: a kids' graveyard for dead pets that somehow, miraculously brings them back to life ...
The only problem is, it doesn't, really. The Sematary animates the dead, but the dead come back ... oh, how to put it? ... a bit--surly. As Dr. Evil would say, "Ill-tempered." This phenomenon is further complicated when parents cannot let their children pass on. Oh, boy--complicated doesn't really cut it.
What a horrendous thought this is, mashing unspeakable human grief (rendered in heartbreakingly realistic prose and dialogue) with ZOMBIES. It's sick, twisted, unforgiveable. That is to say, I liked it a lot.
(This review has been posted by Marcus Damanda, author of the vampire book, "Teeth: A Horror Fantasy.")
Pet Sematary by Stephen King........2007-07-28
Pet Sematary is one of Stephen King's best novels, I have read it several times and it was quite good its one of his first novels of his that I've ever read that was probably 11 years ago. Anyway the book has some great and intense drama as well as horror there are some nice scary moments and the idea of the dead coming back when they get buried in the Pet cemetary was a great idea, the storyline was very gripping as you get interested with the characters and what they go through. Pet Sematary is about a doctor named Loise Creed who moves to the town of Ludlow, Maine along with his family which includes his wife Rachel and both daughter Ellie and son Gage and their cat Church or Winston Churchill they also meet their neighbors Jud Crandall and his wife across the street whoever the street is very dangerous due to the heavy traffic where trucks are constantly driving by, its obviously not a safe place especially for a child to play this was a very well written story by Stephen King it was brilliant and it will have you on the edge of your seat as it becomes more intense especially towards the end even though some parts are a bit drawn out.
Jud Crandall then introduces the family to the pet cemetary which is located near a clear path up into the woods an old Indian burial ground where a Indian tribe called The Micmacs or something like that use to bury their dead it was then used throughout the generations by other people to bury their beloved pets, whoever gets buried there usually comes back to life the next day but something strange happens to them and they're not normal and return as a shambling semblance of life, Loise also starts having nightmares where a ghost warns him about the place he becomes a somnambulist which means that he sleepwalks at night to the burial ground.
There is also the part where Rachel tells the terrible tale of her sister who is suffering from meningitis which is a spine disease that manages to twist her body into a grotesque figure, I like the way that Stephen describes it in detail very creepy. Anyway the book was great and I highly recommend this to all Stephen King fans.
I brought you something mommy, I brought you something!.......2007-07-12
This was my first Stephen King book. I had read numerous short stories by him (Children of the Corn, The Boogeyman, The Jaunt, Sometimes They Come Back, The Mist), and was impressed. But none of them really scared me, like people had said about him, that you spent sleepless nights blah blah blah. So I was told to read novels by him, specifically Pet Sematary and The Shining if I wanted to be scared. So at the nearest used bookstore I grabbed Pet Sematary.
Wow is this book frightening. The characters are also completely fleshed out, which is sometimes unusual for Stephen King. The basic summary of the book is that a man named Louis Creed and his family moves to a small town in Maine. Louis is getting a new job at a college infirmary. He meets an old couple next door named the Crandalls, and immediately becomes friends with them. The Crandalls show to the Creeds a place called the Pet Sematary (mispelled by kids who created it). Young kids buried their pets there when they died. The book really starts when a kid named Victor Pascow collapses and dies in Louis' office. After this event, the Creeds happy life spirals into despair.
This book is really about grief, and what you would do to get something you had lost back. Would you go far enough to maybe cause the deaths of all you love and yourself? And then what would you do to get those who had died back? A deeply philosophical book with one of the best ending lines in a book ever (besides 1984, of course) I highly reccomend this to anyone who is a fan of Stephen King, or who just likes sophisticated horror.
Many sleepless nights thanks to this gem..........2007-06-30
The first Stephen King book I ever read, at the tender young age of 10 years old! (what were my parents thinking letting me read this book!) This is my favorite King novel and literally gave me nightmares for years to come. It is disturbing on so many different levels while at the same time it's absolutely gut wrenching. Its easy to lose yourself in this story as you follow Louis through his trials. Pet Sematary is the best place to start if you have never read a Stephen King novel, and the next book you should read if you are a fan.

Was "Pet Sematary" Really that Scary?.......2003-12-12
Pet Sematary was an overall good book. It wasn't as scary as it was lived up to be. At least one hundred pages were just describibg non-important events. The last twenty pages were the best out of the whole novel. The Creeds move into a subburb from Chicago and meet a very intelligent man Named Jud. Jud tells them about the old Pet Sematary and how the trucks go by without stopping for anyone.
What I liked about the novel was that it had a very good plot to it. Of course it had been done in another book he still made it interesting. What I didn't like about the novel was that it didn't start to get interesting until the last twenty pages.
I would not recommend this book to readers who like stories that are exciting and get to the point. I would recommend this book to readers who love discriptive reading.

Pet Sematary.......2003-10-17
As the author of such books as Carrie, Christine, Cujo, and the Shining, has Stephen King ever written a book so horrifying that he did not want to finish it? Yes! This is it. This is the story of Louis Creed a young doctor, who has a happy family of two kids a wife and a lovely cat. This story takes place in a small town in Maine. It is about a pet cemetery to the left of the Creeds new home in Ludlow. There have been urban myths about the Indian burial grounds behind the cemetery. Louis doesn't take it seriously but what he finds out will be shocking, and he will be horrified down to the bone. For as he will find out the only thing that the burial ground can do for you is have you live your worst nightmare, and there is no escape not even death. As the plot of the story opens up so does the terror of supernatural being, one so chilling that it will have you locking the door and closing the blinds, and leave you lying awake in bed. At some points you will want to stop, but you can't you are unwilling to stop. Once you have read this book you are fearless against any evil you may encounter during the night. You have not yet read a good book until you have read Pet Sematary the best horror clasic written by Stephen King (the best author/director in Hollywood). This book will have you begging for more so I encourage you to buy the spine chilling sequil Pet Sematary 2.
