Book Description

An unwelcome return . . .

Unscathed from the wars, Gervase Frant finally returns to his father's estate to claim his title as the new Earl of Stanyon. But his stepmother's resentment and his half brother's open disdain put a chill on Gervase's welcome. Now he must establish himself as the new head of the house . . . and ignore his family's rising hostility.

And a resented rival

Then Gervase's eye is caught by a lovely young woman -- the same woman already much in favor with his half brother. Now the brothers face direct competition as they bid for the lady's attentions. But as Gervase struggles to maintain a gentlemanly balance, he begins to find himself the victim of repeatedly cruel accidents. Soon it becomes increasingly clear that someone wants the new Earl of Stanyon dead . . .

5 out of 5 stars Jane Austen-ish Heyer novel: Regency satire.......2007-08-30

I am rereading this novel for the ump-teenth time (I have a much yellowed 1951 paperback edition of this novel, imprinted by ACE Books). I have always enjoyed this novel because there is something so very endearing about Gervase Frant, the 7th Earl of St.Erth.

Upon this rereading I have noticed that the social comedy and satire in this novel is the *wickedest* of all of Georgette Heyer's novels. This is a novel rich in all aspects of novel writing, not merely a good regency romance, but a good novel. It captures the feel of Jane Austen's novels more than any other of Heyer's novels. The description of the Stanyon Castle and of each member of the Frant family are deliciously frank and snide. The conversations between members of the Frant family are so comedic that I stop and reread passages in order to savor them (like a really wonderful flavor of ice cream - yummy!).

Gervase was hated by his father, the 6th Earl, because he looks like his beautiful mother, the Earl's first wife. Gervase's mother ran away with a lover when Gervase was young and the 6th Earl never forgave her or Gervase.

Upon the death of his first wife, the 6th Earl remarried and his second wife gave him two children, a son Martin and a daughter Louisa. Gervase's half-brother and sister look like the 6th Earl, unmistakeably Frant-ish, as well as Gervase's cousin Theo Frant (son of the 6th Earl's younger brother).

The 6th Earl, his second wife, and their children have always expected that Martin, the second son, would become the 7th Earl. Martin has been raised and indulged as the heir apparent all his life. Since Gervase entered the army during the Napoleanic Wars, it was expected by all the Frants (except of course Gervase), that he would be conveniently killed in the War. They consider it quite shocking and inconsiderate of Gervase not to have been killed in the Spanish campaigns or during Waterloo (some delightful conversations occur about Gervase's lack of foresight in not getting himself killed or even wounded followed by "politically correct" recanting). Upon his death the 6th Earl left all of his unentailed property to Martin, beggaring the Earldom in order to leave as much away from Gervase as possible.

A year after the 6th Earl's death, Gervase finally arrives at Stanyon. He has deliberately stayed away for the whole year to avoid going into official mourning for a father who treated him shabbily (Gervase dislikes his father as much as his father disliked Gervase). The members of the Stanyon household upon the arrival of Gervase are: Lady St.Erth (Gervase's step-mother), Martin Frant (his half-brother), Reverend Felix Clowne (my lord's Chaplain, most appropriately named), Theodore Frant (Gervase's cousin and my lord's estate agent), and Miss Drusilla Morville (a guest). Later they are joined by the Viscount, Lord Ulverston (Lucius "Lucy" Austell, heir to the Earl of Wrexham, and Gervase's very good friend). Marianne Bolderwood is the local reigning beauty in the Stanyon neighborhood and heiress to 100,000 pounds. While not as funny as the other characters, she is an important plot element. Minor characters who contribute to the comedic elements in the novel and are well-drawn are: Louisa (Gervase's step-sister), Turvey (Gervase's valet), Chard (Gervase's groom), Mr. Leek (a bow street runner), and Drusilla's parents.

At first Gervase thinks that Drusilla is a paid companion to Lady St.Erth until Drusilla makes it clear that she IS the daughter Hervey Morville AND Cordelia Consett, prominent members of the society surrounding Mr. Coleridge and Mr. Southey. She is visiting Stanyon while her parents are visiting their friends. The most flattering description of Miss Morville is that her countenance is pleasing (faint praise indeed). Drusilla is of an extremely practical nature and always has wise advice to handle the everyday problems of life at Stanyon (such as what to do about the ugly epergne in the Small Dining-room that will satisfy both Gervase and his step-mother; also how to handle the inconvenience of Marianne's parents coming down with influenza that might prevent her from attending a ball at Stanyon).

Attempts are being made on Gervase's life and all indications point to Martin as the culprit due to his obvious resentment of his older brother. Opinions as to who is responsible for the murder attempts on Gervase's life are expressed by Theo and Lucy. Lady St.Erth seems oblivious, a very conceited, self-centered, and stupid woman (a running gag is Lady St.Erth's opinions and commentary on card playing and other topics, all based on precepts handed down to her by her father). Miss Morville, who figures out who is trying to murder Gervase and why before anyone else, keeps her own counsel until the end of the novel. Over time, Gervase consults Miss Morville increasingly as it becomes clear to him that she is the only one with exceedingly good sense (delivered with witty repartee).

If you love Jane Austen novels, be sure to order this novel by Georgette Heyer. I guarentee you will want to own it -- not just borrow someone else's copy!

5 out of 5 stars Sense, Mystery and Love.......2007-04-23

The Quiet Gentleman is the third Heyer book I have read and the most enjoyable. It is about an Earl who returns from war only to find he is not welcome by his Stepbrother or Stepmother both of whom who wished he had died in the war. Once home he is beset by "accidents" and that is where the mystery comes in. The Sense comes in with Miss Morville who seems to know the common sense approach to any problem. I really liked her because she wasn't some silly female who swoons she actually is helpful in the midst of a mystery. I also liked her because is not a size 2 and gorgeous. She is plumb and ok looking. And yet she is the one of the love interests in the story not just a side charecter. This is a good book give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Heyer -- perfect combination of wit, mystery, and romance..........2006-09-20

Georgette Heyer novels should be printed with a warning. I have to be careful when reading her novels in public. This is because they inevitably cause a goofy smile to be pasted on my face, and I'll start giggling loudly at random times for no apparent reason to the poor, unsuspecting public around me. The Quiet Gentleman is no exception to this rule. Absolutely nothing beats a Heyer Regency romance for the sheer enjoyment factor and witty, intelligent humor. She truly is the closest thing to reading Jane Austen - and is generally more hilarious. The Quiet Gentleman is the perfect combination of mystery and romance. The whodunit aspect of the novel is so carefully plotted that the revelation of the guilty party is an eyebrow-raising surprise. And with the romance, Heyer once again succeeds in bringing together two seemingly irreconcilable individuals who turn out to be, of course, perfect for each other. To all you fellow Austen lovers out there - if you've never read a Heyer, and my enthusiasm still hasn't convinced you to pick one up, read The Quiet Gentleman for the pure novelty factor that the hero can be named Gervase Frant and still be incredibly hot. Unbelievable, but trust me, it's true.

5 out of 5 stars A book to cheer you up.......2006-09-06

The only other Georgette Heyer work that I have read before is Cotillion when I was a teenager. I loved it, but somehow, missed out on reading more of her work as I grew up. I found the Arrow reprints on a book shelf in a shop in Cardiff, Wales. and brought them home to read.
It is warm, filled with laughter and brightness. Innocence is wonderfully cherished in this book and the characters are sparkling with humour and wit like diamonds. It is a remarkable book, light read for anyone who likes romance and it also something that picks you up from pits of depression if you are likely to encounter those in your life.

5 out of 5 stars Georgette Heyer did it again!.......2006-06-14

I have read several Georgette Heyer novels and I don't seem to get bored with her wonderful stories, unique characters and great eye for historical detail. The Quiet Gentleman is a bit different from the other Heyer novels I have read. There isn't so much romance here. Instead, there is a mystery suspense plot. I am not bothered with that. Her characters are as memorable as ever and the backdrop of the Regency period is as authentic-sounding as ever. Gervase Frant, Earl of St. Erth, has returned home after surviving the Napoleonic Wars. To his step-family's disappointment, he has not only survived the last battle, Waterloo, he has come to claim his place as master of the estate. His family is now determined to make his life as unhappy as possible. And there is the matter that someone has tried to kill him since he arrives. He suspects his step-family of doing this of course. After all, his stepbrother has a lot to gain by having him killed. But Gervase takes it all with quiet dignity. He sets his eyes on a couple of young ladies, including one Miss Morville, all of this while watching his back and awaiting the opportunity to catch the people who want him dead. There are some twists throughout the novel.

The most impressive part of The Quiet Gentleman is the humor. Once again, Georgette Heyer has created an amazing romp that had me in stitches in various occasions. The dialogue is so full of subtle sarcasm and undeniable wit and I marveled at the author's ability at coming up with such lines. Again, I have to compare her to Jane Austen. Anyone who has hungered for a Jane Austen read other than the stuff she wrote can feast on Georgette Heyer as the next best thing. Another great thing about this novel is the characterization. I like Gervase because there's a quiet confidence about him that makes him a compelling and enjoyable hero. This is the second Heyer novel I have read that concentrates on the hero more than the heroine (The Unknown Ajax was the other one). Romance isn't the focus on this story, but, as I said earlier, I'm not in the least bit bothered with that. Heyer had established herself as a three-dimensional writer that branches out of the genre and creates stories and endings that are less predictable than most romances. And of course the other thing that I loved about this book is the accurate description of Regency England. Many romance authors resort to anachronisms in order to keep the story interesting because they don't know how to, or perhaps don't want to combine the rules of propriety as things were at the time with a plausible and passionate story. Georgette has done the aforementioned combination beautifully in her novels. Anyway, The Quiet Gentleman is a must read. You will love the quirky characters, the great suspense plot and the incredible wit. I have combined this read with another Regency book by an author called Loretta Chase and I think Heyer must've inspired the aforementioned author because she writes in a similar style and I loved her novel as well. I had so much fun reading the two books. If you are new to Georgette Heyer, this is a great place to start. I recommend this gem. If you get the Harlequin reprint (I found an out-of-print trade paperback at an used bookstore), I suggest you read the story first and then the forewords from romance authors (if there are any) afterwards, for they tend to use spoilers.

What kept me going on this book comes down to two points...
                    1) I did want to know what happened in the end.
                    2) The book was so easy to read fast...I felt like I was not losing out on my time.
Number two was probably the problem. I went into this story with high expectations. I saw Ed Harris on late night T.V. sometime last year, and he said that he wanted to make this book into a movie. I admit, this is my first Parker novel-but it will be my last. The writing style is not for me. I feel like if he left out the f-word and the sex-this could have been a pre-teen story. Also too much "Cole said" "Virgil said", it really disrupted the flow of the story for me.
I gave the two stars because the story was ok-although I have seen Tombstone and this was definately parallel to that one. But hey, if you do not mind blowing the 2-4 hrs it takes to read this book-go ahead.

4 out of 5 stars Short, iconic western.......2007-05-14

Appaloosa is an enjoyable book, assuming you don't have overblown expectations of Mr. Parker's work.

The hardcover version of the book is very short, printed in large type and on thick paper. The characters are so thoroughly "western", they seem almost like caricatures of cast members in a classic John Ford movie or an episode of TV's Gunsmoke. In fact, the characters are so over-the-top John Wayne-esq that the story may be a parody of the western genre.

But in spite of these criticisms (if they really are criticisms) I enjoyed the story very much, especially the randomly scattered humor.

In short, don't expect that Appaloosa is going to expand your horizons and make you a better person. Just approach it for what it is: a fun read.

4 out of 5 stars King of the Eastern Cowboys Pens a Western.......2007-05-11

Robert B. Parker is most known for his private detective hero, Spenser. One name for a man who specializes in one-liners, snappy comebacks, and sticking with cases that would break most men. However, in APPALOOSA, Parker turns his gaze westward and picks up the story of two men destined for the silver screen.

Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch have been friends and town tamers (marshals who specialize in riding in and being tougher than anyone else in town) for years. They've seen a lot of hard times and enemies over the barrels of guns. In the small town of appaloosa, though, they're facing their worst challenge ever.

Bragg, the local rancher who has a stable of hired gun, has been running roughshod over the town. The aldermen hire Cole and Hitch to bring Bragg down after he kills the last marshal.

Things progress simply and violently, two of the things I most love about Parker novels, and are leavened with remarkably wry, witting, and pared to the bone dialogue. The way Parker writes narrative and dialogue, you'd swear the pages turn themselves.

The fly in the ointment, and in the novel to a degree, arrives in the form of Mrs. Allie French, a woman who's been deserted by her husband and arrives in Appaloosa with a dollar, literally, to her name. Cole sets her up playing piano in the local hotel and proceeds to fall in love with her.

Once Cole has a witness to the murder of the past marshal, he manages to arrest Bragg and bring him into town for trial. Unfortunately, his relationship with Allie leaves him vulnerable in ways he's never been vulnerable before. Two professional gunmen hired by Bragg take Allie prisoner and offer to trade her for Bragg.

Parker's novel is coming to the big screen starring Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen. I can't wait for the film because those two actors will be great for the roles. But if you want to see what the film is going to be about, and if you enjoy quick moving Westerns, pick up APPALOOSA and settle in for the ride.

4 out of 5 stars Parker Shoots and Scores!.......2007-05-03

Parker's Appaloosa makes you feel that you've been transported back to a life in a small western town, dealing with gun fights, Indians and outlaws, and working with Virgil and Hitch as a town marshal. While much of the action is predictable, Appaloosa's main strength is in its very well-developed characters and its sense of the Wild West that is so real you constantly feel the need to kick the mud off your boots and to check your pistol to make sure you're ready for whatever trouble you're going to have to deal with next. If you are hankering for a good novel about an exciting era long past, Appaloosa is highly recommended. Louis L'Amour has nothing over Robert Parker in books about the Old West.

I have been getting into a few westerns lately after reading the classic "Lonesome Dove." Then On the the recommendation of Larry McMurtry I tried the little known "Across the High Lonesome" which while not a classic, is an excellent story. This story however left me flat, it lacks the authenticity I felt in the above two mentioned books. Kind of like watching an episode of the old TV show Gunsmoke. Do read "Lonesome Dove" Lonesome Dove

This is the story about an appaloosa horse named, Albert. Upon opening Albert seems absolutely terrified of a group of kids who want to ride him, but his owner, Beth manages to calm him down.

The story also touches on a number of subjects and situations children face in today's society.

Author Betsy Lee, uses Dolch words in this small chapter book - helping develop word recognition, increasing the ability for children, as well as adults to read well.

All ages will enjoy this book, which is illustrated by color photos. Included are word search puzzles. For lesson plans visit the author's website.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Stories Teach Syllabication.......2004-02-25

After the basic three book series of A Funny Dolch Work Book, this humorous book is the next step in learning to read the basic Dolch words. It offers beginning readers, or children with reading deficiencies, practice in reading Dolch words with various common suffixes(endings) added to the words. It is a great way to expand a child's basic sight vocabulary to two syllable words. The entire book is devoted to delightful stories about horses. Since children are drawn to stories about animals, and in particular horses, this is a wonderful addition to a child's library. Achieve: A Visual Memory Program is a good program to use in conjunction with this Dolch book for syllabication development.

5 out of 5 stars get all four books.......2002-04-26

This is the fourth book in a series of Dolch books by Betsy B. Lee. All four are great. THis one has a collection of short funny horse stories. I guess the only non-Dolch work in the whole book is probably Albert and appaloosa. Big words like appaloosa and palomino don't bother kids especially if they love horses. Well the names of the people aren't Dolch words but they are easy names like Sarah and Linda. This book uses a lot of Dolch words with ed and s on them. Kids need to recognize these forms of the wrds too. Lee's other Dolch books are A Funny Dolch Word Book #1 and #2 and #3. All of these have a few word search puzzles as well. None of the words are backward or upside down.
I really like that. All four books are great!

This book is also a well-written history of the evolution of the appaloosa and the attitudes towards the color. For example, did you know that spotted Lippizans and Lusitanos used to be prized and not prohibited? Highly recommend for those who love spotted horses!

3 out of 5 stars Fun and Colorful (In a Gaudy Way).......2006-03-20

I found this book a bit lacking and shallow... the text was hardly informative; it was mostly metaphors and cliches about how the "souls of Appaloosa and rider become one when they gallop" and stuff like that. Petty, superficial stuff.

However, the photos were bright, high quality and, well, stunning! Almost worth getting it for that alone. I guess this book might make a good gift for younger Appaloosa fanciers, ( ages 8-11) and overall horse lovers (not particularly Appy-associated) who simply admire the grace and beauty of these spotted masterpeices.

4 out of 5 stars A book for the appaloosa enthusiast........2003-06-13

Like the rest of the books in this series, the pictures were beautiful and captured the extraordinary beauty of the Appy. The text was informative (in a superficial way) in describing the origins and legends of this breed. I do wish though that the book would have been longer and the text more detailed about the Appy. I felt the same way about Thoroughbred Spirit. But still very good.

I was very disappointed with this book. Even though it had some great pictures it lacked in information. It just wasn't what I thought it would be. This book would be great to have just for the photos....but thats it.

                          4 out of 5 stars a worth while book.......1998-11-15

This book is a good addition to an appaloosa fans book collection. The text is very informative and the pictures a delightful. Having been an appaloosa fan for many years I thought I couldn't learn any more, so bought this book for the pictures. Reading the book anyway I was very suprised. It deals breifly with all aspects of the appaloosa horse including the history of the 'ghost wind' horses. For example did you know that after fercely carrying their masters into battle and fighting themselves the Nez Pérce appaloosas were taken home and tended to by the childern. After reading this book you realise just how remarkable the appaloosa is and how lucky we are to still have it.

Being an avid lover of spotted horses, I enjoyed reading the history and traits of my beloved Appaloosa. This book has beautiful photos and wonderful information showing how versatile an animal the Appaloosa is, and what integral part it has played in America's history. A great book for the barn or coffee table! Well worth the money!

                          4 out of 5 stars horses A to Z.......2005-02-04

The little girl in the story dreams of having her own horse farm. She tells us of all the things she will have on her farm, starting with the letter A and going all the way to Z! This is a great little horse lovers alphabet book. On each page there is a letter any a horse related term. Sometimes it's a breed of horse and other times it's items that are used in riding.
I liked that the book can be enjoyed by children of all ages.
The book isn't just a picture book using the alphabet. It's a book that can tickle the fancy of a young horse lover, or even older ones, but it's also good for someone who wants to learn a bit more about horses. In the back there is a list of horse terms that are explained well.

5 out of 5 stars A Chinese girl's dreams of her own horse farm.......2004-12-14

It's offical, my daughter has also been bitten by the "horse bug" and if your has too, you too will love this book! This is the story of Leelin Yao and she dreams of when she'll have her very own horse farm! Starting out with the letter A and ending with the letter Z, Leelin tells the reader what kind of horses will be living on her farm!

I love that the main character is Chinese, just like my daughter! This story is for both young and old horse lovers. The pictures are drawn using colored pencils, which to me is pleasing to the eye. At the end of the book there are 3 pages of more details on some of the horse and other things that the author talked. Because of that, this book will grow with my daughter and her love of horse! Now we listen to the words, pointing and saying horse, learning her alphabet, seeing a girl that looks like her and to spotting & naming certain breeds!

This is a great alphabet book for horse lovers. Every letter is a horse or piece of horse riding equipment. Each letter has a sentence with lots of other words starting with the same letter. At the end of the book are 3 pages of text for adults to answer questions that curious readers may have. This reference section provides some very informative explanations of words used in the book. All told, the book has about 300 words. No young horse lover's library is complete without this book!
