If we would only stop and smell the roses once in a blue moon, we'd discover some amazing things on this planet. Why are wildflowers so brightly colored? To attract the attention of honeybees, of course. Why are flamingos pink? Because of the pigments in the crustaceans they eat. Perhaps only a physics professor would know that you can tell the age of a desert by the color of its sand--perhaps only a physics professor would care--but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to appreciate the photographic skills Neill employs in illustrating the authors' concepts.

Book Description

Why is the sky blue and the grass green? What are the colorful secrets of the enigmatic aurora borealis or the ethereal shimmer of a soap bubble? From San Francisco's Exploratorium, the acclaimed hands-on museum behind the best-selling Explorabook, comes The Color of Nature, which delves into these and other intriguing questions. Extraordinary photographs and an engaging text illustrate the fascinating phenomena behind the myriad colors that make up our world -- from moon bows to mandrills, chameleons to hydrangeas. This remarkable volume will fire the imagination of anyone with a passion for nature, science, or photography.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......1998-12-14

"The Color of Nature" is a very good book. The photography is wonderful, and there is nice text to go along with it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Kids and Adults Alike!.......1997-02-04

Paul Dogerty makes learning the "whys" and "hows" of colors fun. He presents the scientific principles of how we see what we see in an easy-to-grasp manner that is both interesting and comprehensible. In addition, the photographs that accompany the text, which alone are worth the price of the book, serve to admirably highlight the processes Dogerty seeks verbally to illustrate. Together, art and words combine to emphasize the wonder and beauty of the world in which we live

Book Description

At the same time it adds a large number of Harrell's highly detailed cloud photography. Extending slightly into the infrared and ultraviolet range, they feature unusual colors in the intent to create paintings. Perception is dealt with from within the Blakean tradition of seeing several levels at once and also from within modern theories that vision is always incomplete, but we "fill in the blanks." Of note is a long extract from an inspirational memoir written for the Exceptional Human Experience Network, "A Man Called Milton [Klonsky]: Experiments in Consciousness. Also included are a few samples of unprogrammed computer printouts that psychically reorganize what was on the screen. Drawing it all together is the theme: "the magnitude of human potential." A CRITICAL COMMENTS: "The wonderful aspect of these cloud pictures is that it leaves the reader to be him/herself and to see that as adequate and good . . . rather than floundering around trying to see something that won't quite come into focus for that person." Taken from a review by Virginia Parrott Williams, Ph.D. President, Williams LifeSkills; Co-Author LifeSkills, Anger Kills; Author, Surrealism, Quantum Philosophy and World War I. "This is Margaret A. Harrell's gift, . . . the images and the writing that goes with them. . . . [She is] an energy manifester and she's bringing it through these energies. . . . This is not only an art book, it's not only an intellectual book, it's about raising consciousness. . . . [The images are] something uniquely different . . . aren't in the Earth archetypes." 5 out of 5 stars Review Appearing in Innerchange Magazine Dec. '05 - Jan. ' 06.......2005-12-06

There is no denying that Margaret Harrell has led an incredibly full and interesting life. New York 's Greenwich Village in its heyday, a long marriage to a Belgian poet, and an academic background that includes Duke University in Durham, NC and the C.G. Jung Institute in Switzerland, are just some of the highlights for this gifted author and teacher. Her latest book, Toward a Philosophy of Perception is based upon a synopsis of Margaret A. Harrell's previous series, Love in Transition. Harrell's mission is to lead others to acceptance of their potential to add to the collective unconscious through their personal, transcendent experiences. Using cloud photographs as a meditative tool, Harrell maintains that access to the pinnacle of human potential is possible.

5 out of 5 stars How to Break Limitations and Restraints.......2005-07-19

Think about the rewards and increased joy we can experience- successfully breaking current limitations and restraints. "Toward a Philosophy of Perception" reveals brilliant pathways for realization of this quest.
As we meditate upon the exquisite thirty-three full-color particularized cloud images, and read about Margaret Harrells intimate search and flashes of enlightment- meditate upon Hunter S. Thompson's poetry- we understand and share her knowledge about the expansive subject of human potential- opening brain/mind to a limitation/restraint-breaking experience.
Also included- excerpts from the world-renowned author's "Love in Transition/Space Encounters" series-
An exciting, vital book- also providing- Blakean multilevel sight with vision theory- increasing awareness- understanding our "light bodies" and the "Collective Unconscious."

5 out of 5 stars A powerful and extended journey into a higher consciousness.......2005-06-12

Impressively enhanced with thirty-three full-color, coffee table-sized cloud photographs, Toward A Philosophy Of Perception: The Magnitude Of Human Potential--Cloud Optics by academician and Eastern Studies advocate Margaret Harrell provides the reader with a thoughtful and thought-provoking text illustrating a powerful and extended journey into a higher consciousness. Toward A Philosophy Of Perception engagingly chronicles Harrell's several decades of inspirational teachings and personal experiences, as well as her dedicated research into consciousness and life. Toward A Philosophy Of Perception articulates the position that everyone inherently holds all the tools they would need to reach a higher level of conspicuousness, and in doing so, become a source of love and light that can help shape a better future for themselves, their loved ones, and their communities. An enthusiastically recommended reading experience, the photography, poetry, sciences, and Harrell's own remarkable abilities to communicate with the reader, make Toward A Philosophy Of Perception a seminal work of wit, wisdom, and imagination.

    Book Description

Clouds affect the climate of the Earth, and they are an important factor in the weather. Therefore, their radiative properties must be understood in great detail. This book summarizes current knowledge on cloud optical properties, for example their ability to absorb, transmit, and reflect light, which depends on the clouds’ geometrical and microphysical characteristics such as sizes of droplets and crystals, their shapes, and structures. In addition, problems related to the image transfer through clouds and cloud remote sensing are addressed in this book in great detail. This book can serve as a major introductory text in cloud optics for students; it can also be an important source of information on theoretical cloud optics for cloud physicists, meteorologists and optical engineers. All basic ideas of optics as related to scattering of light in clouds (e.g. Mie theory and radiative transfer) are considered in a self consistent way. Consequently, the book can also be a useful textbook to newcomers to the field.

        Product Description

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A930423. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric (EFPI) fiber optic sensors were used to determine the first five modal frequencies of laminated glass/epoxy composite beams. EFPI fiber optic sensors and piezoelectric (PZT) ceramic sensor both found identical modal frequencies of the composite beams, however, EFPI fiber optic sensors showed more sensitivity and better signal-to-noise ratios. The analytical classical beam theory and a finite element model validated the EFPI modal frequency measurements. Several 8-ply glass/epoxy composite beams, each 26.04 cm long and 2.33 cm wide were fabricated. Five damaged beams with specified delaminations as well as two different undamaged beams were tested for modal frequencies. Five different delaminations with sizes ranging from 1.27 cm to 6.35 cm long were incorporated in the midplane of the beams. Each modal frequency shifted with a change of delamination size and location. Classical beam theory was used to simulate modal frequency data sets for 1097 different prescribed delamination sizes and locations. These data sets were applied for training and testing a feedforward backpropagation neural network. Finally the neural network was tested against the EFPI fiber optic sensor modal frequency results. The delamination size and location predictions resulted from neural network's simulation had an average error of 5.9% and 4.7% respectively.

This is a very useful book if you ever need to carry out any kind of non-destructive / whole-field measurement! It covers enough basic optics but is not intimidating to an engineer. I happen to be in Prof. Cloud's class and it's fascinating just to see how much information an image, or light, for that matter, can convey. Indeed this could be the way future testing and measurement is heading!!!
