Book Description

The definitive full-color art guide to a New York City landmark visited by 75 million people each year.

From the beginning John D. Rockefeller incorporated art into his plans for Rockefeller Center in New York City, commissioning pieces meant to inspire the viewer with idealism, work ethics, and religion. Over one hundred major works embellish the twenty-two acre complex, making the center the world's largest indoor/outdoor urban museum. The artists include such noted figures as Gaston Lachaise, Lee Lowrie, Paul Manship, Carl Milles, Isamu Noguchi, Diego Rivera, and William Zorach. This book is the first comprehensive review of their work.

Each chapter investigates a single building, illustrated with both historic and dramatic new photographs. Also included are explanations of the themes, myths, and allegories. The book provides a color-coded map of the buildings in the center and a biographical index of the contributing artists. The Art of Rockefeller Center is a treat for the art lover and anyone who has ever marveled at this great American icon. 230 color illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Lavish, Beautifully Done Book.......2006-01-25

Built in the middle of the depression, Rockefeller Center became a part of and a symbol of America. The buildings of Rockefeller Center were not designed as the steel and glass monoliths of today. Art from some of the best artists of the day was incorporated into virtually all aspects of the building. The most famous is the statue of Prometheus delivering fire to the mortals of the earth amidst the waters of the Plaza. But there is much much more. There are the bas-relief stone carvings on the facade, there are murals, statues, even specially designed patterns for the carpets.

This book is the first comprehensive study of the art in the center. It is a large format, beautifully printed edition of the art as it is now, and in many cases historical photographs of the artists as it was being produced in the 1930's.

Ms. Roussel is the Archivist of Rockefeller center. To produce the book she had unprecedented access to the records and files of the center.

    Book Description

This collection of critical essays examines distinctive moments of the Americas Society's visual art program and its impact on the formation of a Latin American market in the United States. Founded in 1965, the Americas Society has played a pivotal role in Latin American art, from Pre-Colombian to modernism.

The book brings together a cross-cultural group of art historians and curators, including Alexander Alberro, Alexander Apó stal, Beverly Adams, Cecilia Brunson, Luis Camnitzer, Thomas Cummins, Andrea Giunta, Nicolás Guagnini, Paulo Herkenhoff, Anna Indych-Lopez, Luis Perez Oramas, John Pruitt, Mary Scheider Enriquez, and Sofía Sanabrais who discuss the relevance of the institution's intricate relationships with art, economics, and politics.

Essays address the emergence of site-specific practices such as Gego's Reticulárea and neo-avant-garde manifestations such as the Fashion Show Poetry Event conceived by E. Costa, J. Perrault, and H. Wiener; Marta Minujin's happenings; Michael Snow's photographs; David Siqueiros' monographic show; and the notion of landscape in the Western Hemisphere, among other significant topics. A Principality of Its Own explores the achievements, frictions, and experiments that modeled the institution from the Cold War to the present.

The enchanting dollhouses, miniature kitchens, and toy shops at the Folk Art Museum are shown in this lovely book. 5 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Research Tool!.......2001-06-27

I consider this book to be one of the best dollhouse references out there. Every page has color photos. Many of the furniture pieces are photographed individually. Each photograph is clear and detailed. The author is careful to note when a piece is original, antique, or modern. Everything in this book is well-researched and documented. You could carve replica furniture pieces from the photographs in here, they are that good!

Needless to say, the houses featured in here are gorgeous in their own right. My favorite part of this book are the great photos of the Grodnertal peg-wooden dolls. This book contains some of the best Grodnertal photos I've ever seen!

          Book Description

The first easy-to-navigate illustrated guidebook to the wonderful sculptures, murals, bas-reliefs, and mosaics of this Art Deco showplace.

From the depths of the Great Depression in 1929, John D. Rockefeller Jr. envisioned an unprecedented, modern, and luxurious building project. Given the theme "New Frontiers," nearly forty artists created everything from paintings and sculpture to fabrics and fountains. Rockefeller Center would be greater than its parts, nothing less than the heart of New York.

Today Rockefeller Center has millions of visitors, but no hands-on guidebook to help tourists easily locate and enjoy its art—until now. Each chapter covers a single building; one general map and detailed section maps make self-guided tours easy. Essential information is provided for every piece, along with color photographs of most. Biographical information and a list of artists allow visitors to single out a specific artist's work.

By the author of the acclaimed The Art of Rockefeller Center, this unique and affordable guidebook will empower tourists, students, and enthusiasts alike to discover Rockefeller's extraordinary vision. 118 color illustrations.

4 out of 5 stars Everythying you wanted to know..........2007-01-10

The title says it all: a detailed account of the history and theme of every scupture, mural, and painting in New York's Rockefeller Center. Casual visitors may find much more detail than they want or need, but anyone who works in the area or is intrigued by the art will enjoy the concise yet engaging commentary. A must-buy for professional guides.

The book is printed on high-quality stock and lavishly illustrated in full color.

5 out of 5 stars Art in the environment.......2006-11-12

I recently walked round the Rockefeller Center to look at all the public art and this lovely little paperback was invaluable. Without it I doubt you will find the eighty or so works of art in the book that are on walls everywhere even though the majority are on exteriors. Items like Lee Lawrie's Atlas statue or the stunning Wisdom wall-relief are well-known but how many visitors realise that when they walk across the lobby of Radio City they are treading on a carpet (replaced in 1999) designed by Ruth Reeves and full of musical instrument motifs or that the bronze statues above the entrance at 620 Fifth Avenue celebrate industries of the British Empire.

The book is divided into fourteen building sections each with a color strip on the page edge that ties in with a color map on the contents page. Each spread features a color photo of the artwork and the opposite page has a very detailed description and technical listing. The last two sections include artist's biographies and an index. I would have liked to see an aerial photo or two of the Center to appreciate just how big the twenty-two acre site is.

This book is a hands-on version of Ms Roussel's much more substantial art book on the Center (ISBN 0393060829). Both books celebrate a modern American structural icon and it is a credit to the current owners that they keep all the external artistic embellishments in excellent condition.

*If you use the book to guide you round the buildings don't forget to have a look at the lovely grillwork set into the sidewalk to protect the trees.

Ad Usum is the catalogue of the retrospective exhibit of celebrated Mexican artist Pedro Reyes mounted at the Carpenter Center and organized by the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University.

This is the first volume entirely dedicated to the works of Reyes, who is considered to be one of the most innovative and radical young Mexican artists.

Comprehensive in its scope, the volume covers all the production of Reyes' career from the mid-1990s until the present--starting with the celebrated series of semi-utopian architectural structures, passing through his performance and video pieces of the early 2000s, and culminating with the collaborative projects in which he has been engaged in recent years.

This volume includes interviews by the artist with Antanas Mockus, Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Augusto Boal, critical texts by Doris Sommer, Ute Meta Bauer (MIT), and the exhibit's curator, José Falconi.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Project Walls for the Entire House .......2005-12-07

This book has many of the walls shown on her Painted House TV show. I tend to TiVo and tape the shows I enjoy. Debbie has some great wall designs and very innovative wall treatments. What I like about her is she does the entire room decor. The problem that I see with most of the designs in this book AND on the TV show is how VERY TIME-CONSUMING they are. I know these designs get done because she has a team of painters, but I don't. Even though most of her designs are beautiful, they would take A LONG time to actually implement. For example the three marble dado on page 122 and the Elizabethan dining room on page 94. I remember this show, there were soooo many steps and it was all done on the ceiling. That in itself creates a totally different set of challenges.

I think this is a beautiful book with some gorgeous walls, but realistically I would not have the time to do over half the projects in this book so I gave it a 4-star.

I do have some favorites that do not seem quite as much of a time-hog:

~ Fornasetti dining room, pg 38
~Suburban update, pg 44: love the wide horizontal paint stripes
                ~Faux silk panels, pg 56
~Georgian Living room, pg 64 and the classic dining room, pg 76: has a tuscany feel

If you have the time, skills and help to do some of Debbie's more ambitious techniques this is a great book. If not, it's still a good book for some of the less time-consuming projects. I would also recommend Painted Illusions by Melanie Royals which have some absolutely beautiful techniques. Don't let the subtitle of Stencils throw you off. Melanie's techniques are also easy-to-follow and don't seem quite as protracted.

5 out of 5 stars LOTS of Unique Ideas to Style Home.......2005-09-13

Want something different for your home, this books has LOTS of unique ideas that make you want to start right now! The directions are clear, consise and easy-to-understand. Ideas for young, young at heart and older people. Very pleased with this book and highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Eye candy and inspiration.......2002-08-07

I love color and Debbie Travis' books are full of it! Don't pay any attention to the people who discount her books as garish. She is very even handed when it comes to her color schemes--this book includes a whole room done in very pale sea-foam green; an airy, almost monochromatic "zen" room; and even some white walls here and there.

But the focus is on the daring, the new, the experimental and exciting. There are traditional rooms, in which she incorporates elements based loosely on historical architechture into a very livable modern room. I especially liked the Georgian room, in which she not only shows you the typical colors used in the period, but a wall technique, how to create an inexpensive freize, and a fireplace surround.

Each room includes much the same--a wall technique and two or three other projects to tie the room to the theme. Along with historical rooms, find also contemporary, country, and themed rooms. The photography is excellent (although sometimes does not fully show the detail of specific aspects of the project).

Overall the best thing about this book is that is shows color on the walls, something a lot of decorators seem to be afraid of. Once you look at the beautiful tones of the raspberry, burgundy, ochre, and umber Travis uses long enough, you start to see that maybe that might look good in your house. Hey, maybe not for everyone or for every room--but it makes an impact.

This is a balanced overview of different styles and colors, as well as an awesome how-to book. Even if you hate the colors she picks, you can learn more practical skills in two or three pages of this book than in all of Christopher Lowell!

                  Book Description

Uncover the glory in your home! Use paint to create inspired living spaces that reflect your style and your home's character.

Once upon a time, there was a sad little Victorian house on the corner, abandoned by its previous owners and abused by time. Your Home, A Living Canvas is the Cinderella story of that house and its transformation into a charming, historic home, thanks to the loving care of acclaimed decorative artisan, Curtis L. Heuser.

From the grand staircase to the cozy third-floor master suite, this book takes you along on the complete floor-to-ceiling, room-by-room makeover. You'll learn about the design concepts and inspirations for each space, along with real-world how-to's behind the wall treatments, ceiling features, architectural highlights, and other exquisite details.

Whether you're interested in a simple faux finish technique or are dedicated to preserving the architecture and charm of your own historic dwelling, this book will help you create a living environment rich in color, texture and atmosphere ... a place called "home."
