Book Description
Intersubband transitions in quantum wells have attracted tremendous attention in recent years, mainly due to the promise of applications in the mid and far-infrared regions (2--20 mum). Many of the papers presented in
Quantum Well Intersubband Transition Physics and Devices are on the basic linear intersubband transition processes, detector physics and detector application, reflecting the current state of understanding and detector applications, where highly uniform, large focal plane arrays have been demonstrated. Other areas are still in their early stages, including infrared modulation, harmonic generation and emission.

Book Description
The purpose of
Intersubband Transitions in Quantum Wells: Physics and
Devices is to facilitate the presentation and discussion of the recent results in theoretical, experimental, and applied aspects of intersubband transitions in quantum wells and dots.
This reference work is based on the International Workshop that was held at National Cheng Kung University in Tainan, Taiwan in December 15-18, 1997.
Intersubband transitions in quantum wells and quantum dots have attracted considerable attention in recent years, mainly due to the promise of various applications in the mid- and far-infrared regions (2-30 mum). Over 40 invited and contributed papers were presented in this four-day workshop, with topics covering most aspects of the intersubband transition phenomena including: the basic intersubband transition process, multiquantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP) physics, large format (640×480) GaAs QWIP (with 9.0 mum cutoff) focal plane arrays (FPAs) for IR imaging camera applications, infrared modulation, intersubband emission including mid- and long-wavelength quantum cascade (QC) lasers such as short (lambda = 3.4 mum) and long (lambda = 11.5 mum) wavelength room temperature QC lasers, quantum fountain intersubband laser at 15.5 mum wavelength in GaAs/AIGaAs quantum well, harmonic generation and nonlinear effects, ultra-fast phenomena such as terahertz (THz) intersubband emission and detection.
Intersubband Transitions in Quantum Wells: Physics and Devices will be of interest to researchers from universities and industrial laboratories working on physics and devices of nanostructures, and researchers in the infrared (IR) community.

Book Description
Since its inception in 1966, the series of numbered volumes known as
Semiconductors and Semimetals has distinguished itself through the careful selection of well-known authors, editors, and contributors. The Willardson and Beer series, as it is widely known, has succeeded in producing numerous landmark volumes and chapters. Not only did many of these volumes make an impact at the time of their publication, but they continue to be well-cited years after their original release. Recently, Professor Eicke R. Weber of the University of California at Berkeley joined as a co-editor of the series. Professor Weber, a well-known expert in the field of semiconductor materials, will further contribute to continuing the series' tradition of publishing timely, highly relevant, and long-impacting volumes. Some of the recent volumes, such as
Hydrogen in Semiconductors, Imperfections in III/V Materials, Epitaxial Microstructures, High-Speed Heterostructure Devices, Oxygen in Silicon, and others promise that this tradition will be maintained and even expanded.
Reflecting the truly interdisciplinary nature of the field that the series covers, the volumes in
Semiconductors and Semimetals have been and will continue to be of great interest to physicists, chemists, materials scientists, and device engineers in modern industry.

Mary Doria Russell's extraordinary and complex historical novel, A Thread of Grace, is the kind of book that you will find yourself haunted by long after finishing the last page. It opens with a group of Jewish refugees being escorted to safe-keeping by Italian soldiers. After making the arduous journey over a steep mountain pass, they are welcomed into a small village with warm food and clean beds. They have barely laid their heads to rest when news is received that Mussolini has just surrendered Italy to Hitler, putting them in danger yet again. This opening sequence is a grim foreshadowing of the heart-breaking journey these characters will experience in their struggle for survival.
The rich fictional narrative is woven through the factual military maneuvers and political games at the end of WW II, sharing a little-known story of a group of Italian citizens that sheltered more than 40,000 Jews from grueling work camp executions. Rather than the bleak and hopeless feeling that might be expected, the novel has the opposite effect; it reminds us that just as there will always be war, crime, and death, so too will there be good people who selflessly sacrifice themselves to ease the suffering of others. Perhaps best of all, Russell succinctly opens and closes her writing with short pieces that bookend the story with the force of a freight train. Her moving finale wraps up her narrative in the present day, with a death bed scene that's sure to rip the heart out of readers of every faith and ancestry.
On the surface, Russell's third novel may seem quite different from her earlier works. Both The Sparrow and its sequel, Children of God , were futuristic stories about Earth's first contact with alien life forms, but a closer look reveals several similarities. Fans of her earlier books will be pleased to find that Emilio Sandoz, the charismatic Jesuit priest from the first two books, finds new life in Renzo Leoni--A Thread of Grace's charming and haunted chameleon. The two have different circumstances and histories, but both characters are made of the same cloth--tormented by their consciences and plagued by unrequited love. Also similar to her earlier books, the characters in A Thread of Grace don't all enjoy a happy ending. A note in the reader's guide tells us that Russell flipped a coin to determine the fate of some of the characters. This may be upsetting for many readers, particularly those used to Hollywood endings, but it does serve as a frank reminder of the arbitrary nature of war and death. --Victoria Griffith
Book Description
Set in Italy during the dramatic finale of World War II, this new novel is the first in seven years by the bestselling author of The Sparrow and Children of God.
It is September 8, 1943, and fourteen-year-old Claudette Blum is learning Italian with a suitcase in her hand. She and her father are among the thousands of Jewish refugees scrambling over the Alps toward Italy, where they hope to be safe at last, now that the Italians have broken with Germany and made a separate peace with the Allies. The Blums will soon discover that Italy is anything but peaceful, as it becomes overnight an open battleground among the Nazis, the Allies, resistance fighters, Jews in hiding, and ordinary Italian civilians trying to survive.
Mary Doria Russell sets her first historical novel against this dramatic background, tracing the lives of a handful of fascinating characters. Through them, she tells the little-known but true story of the network of Italian citizens who saved the lives of forty-three thousand Jews during the war’s final phase. The result of five years of meticulous research, A Thread of Grace is an ambitious, engrossing novel of ideas, history, and marvelous characters that will please Russell’s many fans and earn her even more.

Customer Reviews:
Powerful & Intense.......2007-10-09
I have not read any of her other books even though she comes very highly recommended. I plan to read her books eventually ~~ but this one was recommended since our bookclub is discussing The Holocaust this month and it arrived fairly quickly for the discussion.
It is not what I expected. Don't judge the book by its blurb ~~ it is not just about Claudette, a young Jewish girl on the run from the Nazis. It is about people. It is about how people came together against the insanity that was Nazi Germany. The Italians were rejoicing that Mussolini was captured and they were going to have a monoarchy again ~~ only to find out that the Germans have invaded. Claudette and her father were among the thousands of refugees escaping France into Italy. Then they were on the run for their lives just barely after they crossed the border. They hid in the mountains. The Italian partisans helped them, the Catholic church helped them ~~ everyone helped ~~ well, almost everyone.
There are the stories of Renzo and his mother. He is an ace fighter from WWI. He is also Jewish. He masqueraded as a German interpreter to get valuable information for the underground movement. His mother is an essential part of the story early on ~~ as an old widow, she was able to walk among the Germans undetected. There's a priest, a nun, young adults, kids ... everyone fought against the Germans among poverty and rations. There's Mirella, a young Jewish matron who took in a lot of refugees in her mountain hideaway. There's even a German doctor who had seen the horrors of the concentration camp and deserted his post ~~ only to be saving lives of the Jews as his own redemption.
It is a very intense novel ~~ though the characters are fictional and the places are too ~~ the fervor of the people are not. It is a story about people coming together in spite of their ideologies and religions to fight against the common enemy. It's a fast-paced read too.
I plan to read her other novels eventually ~~ but this one will linger in my mind for awhile ~~ just by the sheer passion of her story-telling.

A bit of a mess.......2007-09-27
Russell's third novel is as chaotic as the guerilla war of its setting. There is no clear protagonist, nor anything like a linear plot. The novel has as many major characters as any by Michener, but with only half the pages and covering a span of two years, not hundreds. Just when someone becomes interesting, Russell's onto someone, or back to someone we've forgotten, who's by the way no using an alias (make sure to refer often to the reference guide at the front of the book). With only 40 pages left in the book, a major new character literally drops from the sky. Why? And why should we care?
Russell's prose is, as always, beautiful, and the themes she explores are rich and provocative. The title refers to a on old Hebrew saying: No matter how dark the tapestry God weaves, there is always a thread of grace. This is more of a patchwork quilt, but filled with grace nonetheless.
An unforgettable book........2007-09-27
After having read A Thread of Grace twice consecutively, I'm still unable to stop thinking about this book. Ms. Russell's character development is outstanding. Whether she's describing the thoughts of a seven year old Jewish boy, a Nazi deserter or a teenage girl falling in love; her characters are complex, human, flawed and so very real. You can't help but identify with them on some level and subsequently, to wonder where you would've fit in under the same circumstances. Would Renzo have considered you a $#!+ead, a saint or one of the many people in the middle, just doing the best they can and living - or dying with their mistakes.
I've read several non-fiction Holocaust books and am amazed at how a well-researched, well-written work of fiction can draw out an even more powerful, deeper appreciation for what that generation experienced and how it shaped those that survived. I think it speaks volumes to the talent of this author. My one complaint: it could have been twice as long. I wanted more Duno, more Schramm....I could go on and on. This is a book that won't leave you alone.
A Passionate Story of Survival.......2007-07-06
With a first chapter so compelling that I think my mouth fell open in amazement as I read the last sentence, Mary Doria Russell's story offers great promise. However after that, the beginning of this ambitious novel is complicated to follow. There are almost too many characters. Thankfully the author developed a list of players for us to work with and I was constantly flipping to it to find out just who I was reading about. If I hadn't chosen this novel for a book club discussion, I might not have pursued it. I am so glad that I did.
As I became caught up in the story, the initial confusion was worth it. The characters are well developed and intriguing, displaying both endearing and irritating qualities. The dialogue is realistic, meaningful, and moves the story along. Thoughtful philosophies are discussed in a manner which makes the reader really ponder ideas. "He denies his own superior germ plasm to the nation, when it's every good Aryan's duty to breed?" Mirella asks a German officer who has deserted. The point of view often switches to tell the story through various characters' eyes. While this might be construed as confusing, it gave greater passion to the story. There was an amazing example of this heartbreaking emotion as one woman is unable to complete her own thoughts. The novel takes us on a ride of emotions. We're soaring with some of the love stories and successes, laughing with some of the wonderful moments of humor (especially with Renzo and his mother, Lidia), and devastated by the losses many of these heroes and heroines endured.
I find stories about World War II fascinating and consequently have read many. This was a superb account of what happened in occupied Italy and the wonderful Italian people who gave so much to help the Jewish refugees and the Italian Jews. Like "Those Who Save Us," by Jenna Blum, It's the story of what lengths people went to to survive. Because there were no fairy tale endings, the story seemed more real. Devastating events and tragic losses might turn some readers off, but they made the dark story memorable and truthful. There was always a "thread of grace" to keep the reader enthralled. I highly recommend this historical novel. You won't be able to stop thinking about it.
Wonderful Novel.......2007-06-26
Mary Doria Russell takes a tragic phase in Italian, and European history and puts names and faces to a story largely unknown. The Italian resistance, partnered with Jews, the Catholic church and normal citizens fought for their country, their lives, and the lives of those so harshly treated by the Nazi regime. "A Thread of Grace" is a gripping novel that sucks the reader in taking you on an emotional journey of self-discovery, self-reliance and faith in community.

understanding myself.......2007-05-01
After reading Stepping Out of the Bubble a year ago, I went back and read it again for a second time. I was able to pick up even more information this time around that helped me understand and overcome some of my own internal conflicts. This is a book you can read at any point in your life and always find information that pertains to that particular moment. Krehbiel has a way of explaining things that others may consider unexplainable. Whether you are a student, a teacher, or just a guy like me, this book can and will change your life.
A practical resource for better living.......2006-03-27
For me, "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" was reminiscent of the renowned books of author, M. Scott Peck, in the style of presenting profound insights into sensible, easy-to-understand language and clear ideas an average person can relate to. Practicing Licensed Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist and author of "Stepping Out Of The Bubble", James Krehbiel proficiently shares a portion of his expertise, condensing great weight into accessible and workable solutions for a more fulfilling life's plan.
The "bubble" represents our security and comfort zone, but it is also the inner place where we store the pain of our past experiences and the unpleasant reality of that not being made conscious which keeps us bound in unhealthy and self-defeating patterns. Staying within this bubble limits our emotional responsiveness as we numb ourselves to the coexistence even as unresolved issues unconsciously filter forth. To step outside of the bubble is to courageously examine the contents in all honesty and to face life's reality outside of the bubble. Once outside the bubble, one can move forward to experience life in more emotional depth, fullness and passion. "Being a fully functioning individual is about being true to whom you are and letting things be the way they are," explains author, James Krehbiel.
With brilliant and compassionate understanding, Mr. Krehbiel briefly details methods used and pertinent case examples within his therapy practice. "Self-regulation is a goal of therapy. I educate people in the fact that all the answers are ultimately within." "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" strives to do the same, by giving information on how we become trapped in the bubble and how beneficial the making of conscious choices to leave, can be.
Some of the many topics included within this book are: being assertive, characteristics of an "authentic" person, the integration of each of our different personality parts, the difference between true guilt and false guilt, setting boundaries, addictions and addictions to "manic" relationships, awareness (staying in the moment or mindfulness), grounding, honoring one's inner voice, panic attacks, OCD and mood disorders. The section regarding kids and parenting was exceptional, in my opinion, and I found many points about discipline that made much sense. Also appreciated was the section relating to religion (dogma) versus faith (spiritual) as well as what needed to be said about pop culture.
I enjoyed reading "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" and would recommend it to anyone. It is enriching and inspirational.
Reviewed -by C.Gale Perkins-author.......2006-03-18
Stepping Out Of The Bubble by James P. Krehbiel, Is an outstanding book on Counseling Therapy. Krehbiel, is able to put life patterns and fears into perspective so that the lay person can fully understand the mystery that most think is behind counseling. His approach to show that so much of what we seek answers for is within ourselves and with the right counsellor we can become free and step out of the Bubble or Bubbles that a lot of us are in.
This book should be a gift to every teen and their parents, no home should be without it.
Gaining Courage to Live Outside of the Bubble.......2006-02-25
James P. Krehbiel's Stepping Out of the Bubble was a fascinating read. I found myself underlining various passages. His explanation of how we get stuck in the bubble (comfort zone), and how we find our way out is powerful. It provided me with hope as I move through my own personal journey. I found myself experiencing an emotional reaction to many of the case examples and concepts he explored. He definitely hit some "hot buttons" in my life. But Mr. Krehbiel also provided specific guidelines and tools for stepping out of the bubble. At one point he says, "Courage can be defined by those who live outside the bubble as opposed to those who live in it. I like to compare stepping out of the bubble to wading into the water."
His chapter which includes ideas on multidimensional thinking is appropriate in today's political climate. He indicates that true dialogue takes into consideration the appreciation for differences in opinions. He makes some profound statements about pop culture's affect on the lives of today's children. He also gives parents tools and resources for assisting their children in bettering their behavior. The book ends with a resounding "yes" to life with a hopeful, powerful way of perceiving and reframing life's problems. This was an excellent book!
My Review of a Great Book.......2006-02-23
"Stepping Out of the Bubble : Reflections On the Pilgrimage of Counseling Therapy by James P. Krehbiel is an amazing and outstanding book that provides help and direction to the many people that are suffering from problems described in this book.
I was amazed at how many of the problems and challenges, that the author writes about, are problems and challenges I have seen many people suffer with.
The counseling theory and practice information in this book provides a direction for people that have a problem and are willing to go to counseling and risk moving forward in their journey toward finding personal growth and development, and eventually stepping out of the bubble.
Many people have problems and challenges that they never seek help for and they and their loved ones continue to suffer. This book goes a long way in bringing the thought of counseling to people and helping people to better understand the counseling process.
To author James P. Krehbiel thank you for writing your great book. I am convinced your book will help many people and because of your book many more people will step out of the bubble. I recommend this book very highly and also feel it would be a great college text.

Book Description
There is an ancient Chinese belief that an invisible, unbreakable red thread connects all those who are destined to be together.
A king and queen rule a beautiful and peaceful land. They should be full of joy and contentment, but they both feel a strange pain that worsens every day.
Then a peddler's magic spectacles reveal a red thread pulling at each of their hearts. The king and queen know they must follow the thread-wherever it may lead.
Grace Lin's lovely adoption fairy tale is for all children-and the parents who would search the world to find them.
Customer Reviews:
Red Thread.......2007-09-30
I'm a children's therapist and bought a number of books on foster care and adoption - this one was the biggest hit. I find that kids relate more to metaphorical stories rather than the didactic ones.
Sure to tug on your heartstrings & be a much loved & requested book!.......2007-09-24
Our story begins with a Mom & Dad sitting on a red couch amid a box of dress up clothes and some of Grace Lin's beloved books in our home placed close by. Their little daughter brings her mother a beloved and much read book, to which her mother replies as we often do......" This story again? You've heard it a hundred times. Are you Sure? Okay, I'll read it to you again, " thus begins Grace Lin's newest book Red Thread: An Adoption Fairy Tale.
Everyone who has adopted a child from China now a days knows the ancient Chinese belief of an unbreakable & invisible red thread that connects those who are destined to be together. I like how Grace Lin took this and created a wonderful book in which to me she put much thought into creating it and the little details in the book that most of us felt during the journey to our children. I love that the parents are sitting on a red couch, how the page with the king & queen staring up into a tree where their red threads are tangled... I know I felt the frustration of all the red tape, paper work & things we have to do to follow our invisible heart strings to China. I love that this story ends with the family sitting on their red couch closely together and everyone is wearing a golden crown! How true, we are so blessed and enriched by our child!
Grace Lin has written another wonderful book that will tug on the heart strings of all adoptive parents and show their children how just like their parent's heart strings, it took them on a journey of a thousand(s) of miles to China to find the very sole that will tug on our hearts for ever. Our daughter enjoys hearing her story & our adoption journey to China. I Think that Grace Lin's has created another wonderful book that will be also much read and requested in our home as well.
Keep up the terrific work Grace!
A WARM, TOUCHING STORY.......2007-09-07
Basing her warm story on an ancient Chinese belief that "an invisible, unbreakable red thread connects all those who are destined to be together," Grace Lin has fashioned a tender tale that will hold special appeal for adopted children and adoptive parents.
At the center of her story are a king and queen who rule an incredible kingdom where there is never any famine or drought. They're beloved by their subjects, still they feel something is missing in their lives.
Soon both of them feel pain in their hearts, pain that worsens with each day. Finally, a peddler arrives with spectacles that allows them to see that a red thread is tugging at each of their hearts. They're unable to cut the thread to ease their pain, so their only choice is to follow it.
They never dreamed how far they would have to go or how difficult their journey would be. They wondered, "Was it a ferocious beast or a cruel magician? What would they do when they met whatever was on the other end?"
All will be touched by what the king and queen discover; many may have felt the same joy.

The Blums will soon discover that Italy is anything but peaceful, as it becomes, overnight, an open battleground pitting against one another the Nazis, the Allies, resistance fighters, Jews in hiding, and ordinary Italians trying to survive. Set against this dramatic background, Russell traces the lives of a handful of fascinating characters - a charismatic Italian resistance leader, a Catholic priest, an Italian rabbi's family, a disillusioned German doctor - telling the little-known but true story of the Italian citizens who saved the lives of forty-three thousand Jews during the war.
