Book Description
Fundamentals of Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry presents an account of the development and theory of the quadrupole ion trap and its utilization as an ion storage device, a reactor for ion/molecular reactions, and a mass spectrometer. It also expands the appreciation of ion traps from that of a unique arrangement of electrodes of hyperbolic form (and having a pure quadrupole field) to a series of ion traps having fields with hexapole and octopole components and introduces the practical ion trapping device in which electrode spacing has been increased. The fundamentals of ion trap are covered in four chapters, beginning with the origin of the ion trap, its development and operating principles, and improvements in performance. The second part focuses on the environment within the ion trap -- the movement of ions within the trap -- and how this movement is modified by repeated collisions of the ions with buffer gas atoms of helium, and on the collisions of ions with molecules that lead to chemical change. The critical role of collisions in focusing the ion cloud for subsequent operations is emphasized. This important reference presents a coherent picture of the present status of research in the ion trapping field to facilitate the entree of potential ion trappers and provide a backdrop for ion trap research and development in the future.

Book Description
This book provides an introduction and guide to modern advances in charged particle (and antiparticle) confinement by electromagnetic fields. Confinement in different trap geometries, the influence of trap imperfections, classical and quantum mechanical description of the trapped particle motion, different methods of ion cooling to low temperatures, and non-neutral plasma properties (including Coulomb crystals) are the main subjects. They form the basis of such applications of charged particle traps as high-resolution optical and microwave spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, atomic clocks, and, potentially, quantum computing.
Book Description
This symposium is a triennial event, held in different places around the world (next symposium will be in Japan, in 2003). The topic of the symposium is the development of electron beam ion sources and traps and their applications, so far in basic science and research, but with prospects for extending them into other areas. Potential readers would have an interest in atomic physics and applications to accelerator physics.

Splitting the Second : The Story of Atomic Time
ASIN: 0387695338 |
Book Description
This work attempts to convey a broad understanding of the physical principles underlying the workings of these quantum-based atomic clocks, with introductory chapters placing them in context with the early development of mechanical clocks and the introduction of electronic time-keeping as embodied in the quartz-controlled clocks. While the book makes no pretense at being a history of atomic clocks, it nevertheless takes a historical perspective in its treatment of the subject.
Intended for nonspecialists with some knowledge of physics or engineering, The Quantum Beat covers a wide range of salient topics relevant to atomic clocks, treated in a broad intuitive manner with a minimum of mathematical formalism. Detailed descriptions are given of the design principles of the rubidium, cesium, hydrogen maser, and mercury ion standards; the revolutionary changes that the advent of the laser has made possible, such as laser cooling, optical pumping, the formation of "optical molasses," and the cesium "fountain" standard; and the time-based global navigation systems, Loran-C and the Global Positioning System. Also included are topics that bear on the precision and absolute accuracy of standards, such as noise, resonance line shape, the relativistic Doppler effect as well as more general relativistic notions of time relevant to synchronization of remote clocks, and time reversal symmetry.
This edition retains the essentially didactic approach to the treatment of the development of atomic clocks in the first edition, but brings up to date the extraordinary developments in recent years, culminating in clocks based on quantum resonance at optical frequency in individual ions confined in miniature electromagnetic traps. These, together with advances in the generation of wide-band coherent frequency combs spanning the spectrum as far as the optical range, has made possible the direct measurement of phenomena occurring at optical frequencies! As a result of these recent advances, in addition to the time-based GPS and LORAN C navigation systems treated in the first edition, other important applications of a fundamental scientific interest have become feasible. These include satellite-borne tests of the theory of general relativity and the equivalence principle on which it is based.
As with the first edition, the book is intended for students and non-specialists; hence the material is not rigidly formal, is mostly self-contained, and presented in a broad intuitive manner with a minimum of mathematical formalism.
Customer Reviews:
Best discussion of Clocks at all levels.......1998-06-24
There are excellent books discussing time at a level accessible for the general reader (e.g. Empires of Time, by Anthony Aveni). The Quantum Beat is the only one I've seen that gives a thorough discussion of the basics and then goes on to give an incredibly lucid discussion of all the minute details involved in making more and more accurate clocks. He elaborates on the pluses and minuses of each new development, from the sundial to the pendulum clock to the quartz crystal clock to the atomic clock. He also outlines the directions currently being pursued -- clocks based on a single atom held in an atom trap.
The book will have special appeal to those who know about physics, crystals or engineering, and it should make fascinating reading for any educated layperson.
Major was a key figure in the development of atomic clocks and has produced an exhilarating book describing their importance and the incredible technological efforts that went into their development.

A liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method for the analysis of beta-agonists in bovine muscle is developed. Sample clean-up is based on molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs). The LC-MS method was validated for screening purposes. The validation results show that eight compounds (cimaterol, cimbuterol, ractopamine, clenproperol, clenbuterol, brombuterol, mabuterol, mapenterol and isoxsuprine) meet the requirements for quantitative determination using MIPs for sample clean-up. Reliable screening is possible as low as 1@mgkg^-^1. The method was validated for bovine muscle but also has proven to be suitable for muscle samples from rabbit, duck and turkey, liver and various kinds of fish.

Description:
The work aims to characterise PCDDs/Fs in environmental matrices by high resolution gas chromatography coupled to low resolution quadrupole ion-trap mass spectrometry (GC-QITMS/MS). In particular, the study was mainly focused in different environmental samples such as sewage sludge, soils, and sediments and in combustion residues as fly ashes. Previous experiences have already detected and quantified PCDDs/PCDFs in all matrices studied. Moreover, isomer-specific analysis of 2,3,7,8-PCDDs/Fs compounds corroborated good correlation between GC-QITMS/MS and a well-established technique such as high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). Finally, QC measures included the participation in intercalibration exercises. Successful results were achieved using GC-QITMS/MS in the analysis of fly ashes, soils and sediment materials. In general, GC-QITMS/MS constitutes an interesting alternative for routine analysis of dioxins in such as matrices.

Pointless.......2007-10-08
I like swashbuckling, and honor, and political intrigue, and all of that stuff. Sadly, this book lacks all of these.
Alatriste is inconsistent -- a mercenary one moment, a hero the next. None of the political intrigue gels into anything interesting -- things happen, and we don't care why.
The novel felt like the backstory for some larger work. There was a novelette worth of material in a short novel's worth of pages.
Swashbuckling and Literature in 17th Century Spain.......2007-08-14
In 'Captain Alatriste', Arturo Perez-Reverte introduces Diego Alatriste a literary character who defines swashbuckling sword-fighter. The book is the first in a series (more on that below). Set in early 17th century Spain, the story is narrated by Íñigo Balboa, the 13-year-old son of a deceased former compatriot in the Spanish army who now resides with (and worships) Alatriste.
Alatriste has survived another war wound that forced a return to Madrid to find his way in the world. He is recruited into a night-time alleyway attack on two Englishers - but Alatriste has been given two sets of instructions. Why? And who are these Anglos?
Perez-Reverte takes the reader inside the palace intrigue of Philip IV's Spain, a time when Spain has passed its apogee and is beginning a long tumble. We meet the king's prime minister Don Gaspar de Guzmán y Pimentel, Count of Olivares and Luis de Alquézar, the king' secretary, and Angélica, the entrancing daughter of Alquézar.
Spanish culture, however, is flourishing in Spain's Golden Age and Perez-Reverte revels in it. The reader mixes with the painter Diego Velazquez, the writers Luis de Góngora, Lope de Vega, and especially Francisco de Quevedo, a close friend of the good captain. Indeed, the book's climax takes place at a performance of a comedia by Lope.
The Captain Alatriste novels have proven so popular in Spain that the government issued a postal stamp with his likeness! Perez-Reverte has written five Alatriste novels (with two more to come), but so far only 3 have been translated into English.
I hold back from giving Captain Alatriste five stars only because I experienced a bit of a Sara Lee moment (that's all there is?) with regard to the end of the tale.
I highly recommend Captain Alatriste for its exploration of both cultural as well as political elements of a romanticized era, Spain in the 17th century. As all good historical should aspire to do, Captain Alatriste only whets the appetite for the period and the players. On to the next book, Purity of Blood.
Captain Alatriste.......2007-05-16
Captain Alatriste is the enthralling story of a seventeenth-century Spanish soldier who, after retiring from the Spanish army, served as so many ex-soldiers did as a sword for hire. Arturo Pérez-Reverte is one of the best authors I have read. Alatriste is an excellent read and I highly recommend it. Simply outstanding.
Perez-Reverte does it again!.......2007-05-09
Captain Alatriste is an exciting adventure, filled with the plot twists and turns that Perez-Reverte is known for. This is a terrific read. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Swordplay, Adventure and Intrigue.......2007-04-18
Captain Alatriste is the opening chapter in a series of novels detailing the adventures of the book's namesake, a veteran soldier turned sword for hire. The story is narrated by Captain Alatriste's page, the son of a fallen comrade in one of Spain's many military campaigns. The narration gives the story some good texture, and comes across like you are listening to Inigo recall events long past their time. This is a good thing, because the story is so incredible that it is better as a remembered tale.
Perez-Reverte is an accomplished writer who knows how to keep a story moving, and most of the chapters end in a way that is hard to stop reading. Unfortunately the translation makes some of the prose seem a little off; it is hard to say why exactly (I don't speak a word of Spanish myself), I just feel like I am reading a translation- other books and novels I've read translations of haven't had this effect.
Nearly all the characters in the story are overflowing with personality; especially the villains. They are a cast of good and bad you will love to love & hate.
The setting is Spain of the 1600's, a fading world empire in the midst of the Inquisition and enthralled by its own past glories. The dark tones from the Inquisition add a great deal of atmosphere to the novel and the basics of Captain Alatriste's political setting are similar to character operating in Stalinist Russia, or Nazi Germany (read any books by Alan Furst for this brand of spy/adventure). These themes are tempered by the chivalry and splendor of the fading monarchy. All in all, an excellent setting that is not often touched by modern writers.
As for the action, you will be well rewarded for your time; the swordplay is generous and exciting.

Book Description
Arturo Pérez-Reverte is one of the most beloved writers in the world. His bestselling novels, including The Club Dumas and The Queen of the South, have been published in fifty countries and translated into twenty-eight languages. Now, with The Adventures of Captain Alatriste, he delivers a magnificent series, already a million-copy bestseller in Spain, that chronicles the heroic adventures of a seventeenth-century swordsman.
In Purity of Blood, the second novel in the series, the courageous Alatriste is considering rejoining his old regiment to fight in Breda-but his blade leads him to another adventure. A desperate father hires him to rescue his daughter from a convent where a powerful priest is said to be using the girl as his personal concubine. The father has been prevented from legal recourse because the priest has threatened to reveal that the man's family is "not of pure blood"-is, in fact, of Jewish descent -which will all but destroy the family name. Alatriste agrees to help, and several nights later, under the cloak of darkness, a rescue attempt is made.
But soon Alatriste discovers that he has become part of a religious and political conspiracy that leads all the way to the highest levels of the Inquisition. When a date is set to burn the man's daughter at the stake, Captain Alatriste springs into action -sword first-setting off a series of twists and turns that will keep readers riveted to the page.

Customer Reviews:
Auto de Fe, Anyone?.......2007-10-05
'Purity of Blood' is the second in the Captain Alatriste series. Pereze-Reverte once again takes the reader to 17th century Spain and the rule of Philip IV and the Spanish Inquisition. Monty Python may not have expected it, but the Spanish Inquisition is at the heart of this tale.
The story is fairly straightforward. Alatriste's poet friend the don Francisco Quevedo (an historical figure) seeks the swordfighter's help in freeing a family friend from an "unpleasant" life in a convent. Mayhem ensues and our narrator young Inigo Balboa finds himself in the tender clutches of the Inquisition.
A good story, but Perez-Rverte's real strength is putting the reader inside the skin of a 17th century hidalgo as well as the fears of living in a society where the Inquisition holds sway. The presentation of an auto de fe through the eyes of one its, umm, participants is fascinating. I highly recommend reading Captain Alatriste first. You will understand and enjoy the book much more.
Another Period Swashbuckler with An Almost Modern Perspective .......2007-09-03
Arturo Perez-Reverte keeps his swashbuckling Captain Diego Alatriste going in this one, the second in the Alatriste series, as the indomitable soldier of fortune and his boy apprentice, Inigo de Balboa, son of one of the Captain's former comrades in arms, stumble into still another adventure.
This time they run up against the Inquisition and the Spanish obsession with the pure blood of "Old Christians", a euphemism for Catholic Spaniards who have no Jewish blood in their ancestry (since the Jews of the land were either driven out or forced to convert a century or so before this story takes place). Alatriste finds himself enlisted by a poet friend into a Quixotic scheme to rescue the daughter of a Spanish caballero of, it turns out, suspect blood. The young girl has been inducted, apparently against her will, into a convent that is said to serve as a front for a rogue priest's private seraglio and Alatriste is prevailed upon to lead a rescue attempt. Things take a sharp turn southward as Alatriste leads his small force of conspirators in the dark of night onto the convent's grounds and poor Inigo, the Captain's ward and page, ends up in the hands of the Inquisition.
Alatriste must figure out who is behind the machinations that have ensnared them and find a way to cut the knot that binds. The dauntless Captain remains the strong silent type as he scuttles about in the shadows, dodging the Inquisition's agents and seeking out those who have conspired against him. At the very heart of the plot lurks an old and deadly enemy and Alatriste will get his chance to at last engage this man before the story runs its course.
There are weaknesses here, unfortunately, including a slow and almost ponderous beginning and a heavy emphasis on poetic stanzas which don't play as well in English as they may, perhaps, in Spanish. All are recorded in a somewhat tiresome fashion by our narrator, none other than the young Inigo, ensnared, in this book, at the very center of the web that has been spun for Alatriste. Fortunately, the Captain, honorable and deadly as he is, still has a few friends in high places and a few chits he can call in.
One particular problem with the book, is its narration. Told in first person throughout, Inigo spends much of this adventure in an Inquisition prison cell in Toledo, so it seems rather odd when he recounts the Captain's actions in detail, as they are occurring far away from him in Madrid. The idea, one supposes, is that Inigo learned everything that happened afterwards from the other participants and put it all together many years later. Still, it rings odd to switch from Inigo's firsthand account of his own captivity in the hands of the Inquisitors to an equally detailed telling of the Captain's nighttime escapades. Either Inigo had very good sources, including the Captain himself, who is famously taciturn, or a great imagination in which case his tale is not entirely reliable (though this is never suggested by the narration itself). Such reports as he provides are jarring because they seem to sap the logic of the narrative.
Still, the book proceeds swiftly and engages both in terms of plot and its capacity for recreating the era of Spanish imperial decline. We get a rich sense of what Spain in the early 17th century might have been like, of the swaggering caballeros, hidalgos, poets and other courtly hangers on who prance and mince about the towns and countryside, engaging in various schemes and preening themselves for the ladies. Along with the fast paced action which occasionally kicks in, and the fun trying to unravel the mystery that lies behind the Captain's latest situation, the book is certainly worthwhile. I plan to read the next in the series.

Captain Alatriste is the icon of an epoch, when Spain, from being the biggest power of the world, started its decadence. The recreation of the times is accurate, full of flavor and colors. I recommend this book for people who lives the adventures books, like mental movies.
Swashbuckler par excellence but ..........2007-06-24
No question but I prefer The Seville Communion or The Club Dumas - give me a good mystery anytime. I had not read Captain Alitriste which put me at a disadvantage for my expectations. I am unlikely to put swashbucklers in my favorite reads category but Purity of Blood is an interesting afternoon's diversion. What puts this book above the average historical thriller?
1. The characters are fleshed out and thoughtful in the sense of being true to their historical time and position. While Spanish society is shown with all its warts - the Inquisition, social interactions that easily escalate to bloodshed, hypocracy and mysticism thriving side by side ... - the characters are both products of and critics of the society.
2. The setting and plot reflect detailed knowledge of the time on the part of the author. The novel has a sense of reality to it that is often missing in the genre.
3. Poetry is quoted throughout the book - and not just by the poet. Here and there a very perceptive philosophical statements makes its way into the text. This provides the reader with a bit to think about rather than counting the pages until the next crisis.
Come for the swordfights - stay for the verse.......2007-06-23
Swordsman and his youthful sidekick facedown villains and religious fanatics in long ago Spain. The action is swift, the philosophical asides and accompanying poetry of some of the players is marvelous. Truth be told, the characters with their exotic names kind of run together. But still a delight.
