Book Description
Whitman is today regarded as America's Homer or Dante, and his work the touchstone for literary originality in the New World. In Leaves of Grass, he abandoned the rules of traditional poetry - breaking the standard metred line, discarding the obligatory rhyming scheme, and using the vernacular. Emily Dickinson condemned his sexual and physiological allusions as `disgraceful', but Emerson saw the book as the `most extraordinary piece of wit and wisdom that America has yet contributed'. A century later it is his judgement of this autobiographical vision of the vigour of the American nation that has proved the more enduring. This is the most up-to-date edition for student use, with full critical apparatus.
Download Description
Abraham Lincoln read it with approval, but Emily Dickinson described its bold language and themes as "disgraceful." Ralph Waldo Emerson found it "the most extraordinary piece of wit and wisdom that America has yet produced." Published at the author's expense on July 4, 1855, Leaves of Grass inaugurated a new voice and style into American letters and gave expression to an optimistic, bombastic vision that took the nation as its subject. Unlike many other editions of Leaves of Grass, which reproduce various short, early versions, this Modern Library Paperback Classics "Death-bed" edition presents everything Whitman wrote in its final form, and includes newly commissioned notes.

What book will you get when you order this?.......2007-06-17
There seems to be some confusion, both in the editorial reviews and the customer reviews, about what edition is being referred to in this listing. the first editorial review correctly discusses the first edition as shorter and "less bloated" than the deathbed edition. however, the rest of the reviews seem to discuss either edition indiscriminately.
the two are effectively different books. the cover shown is of the first edition including an illuminating essay by malcolm cowley--that's certainly the edition I prefer, and I hope thats what you would get if you ordered this.
Leaves of Grass.......2007-03-19
Walt Whitman is one of the two most read poets by the American reading public. This is a classic and like Whitman, it covers every aspect of life, including his patriotism.
Walt Whitman is a Great Read!!!!!.......2007-03-09
If you love poetry, then this is a great read!!!
Don't Try to Read it at One Sitting.......2006-09-21
Whitman is not the world's greatest poet - that's probably Shakespeare - but he's certainly been the most influential American poetic voice over the past century. He was the first poet to take all of American life as his subject. Ever the Romantic, Whitman was also the first poet to bring Romanticism into line with everyday reality.
His narcissism can be annoying, but his panoramic descriptions of life and the imagination have a singularly cumulative power. Some of his short poems ("A Noiseless Patient Spider" and "To a Locomotive in Winter")are individually memorable. The longer poem "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed," indirectly about the Lincoln assassination, is brilliant. I think most of his Civil War poems are overpraised, but "Come Up from the Fields, Father" is a masterpiece of its kind.
On the negative side, Whitman's transcendental philosophy, which he likes to indulge at length, will strike many readers as very sappy. His style, lots of details piled up on top of one another, grows monotonous, and readers who criticize his lack of traditional poetic craftsmanship cannot just be brushed off. My advice is to not to try to get through it all at once. The poems rarely become "difficult," they just tend to blur one into the other. Which may actually have been Whitman's intention.
Overall, there's never been a book quite like "Leaves of Grass," in any edition, and that's why it keeps selling as a true classic. In other words, a very old book that people still buy and read and enjoy even when no teacher is telling them to. Reading it will get you as close as one book can to actually living in nineteenth-century America, with all its follies, inequities, and promise.
Review of Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass".......2006-07-06
This thick soft-backed "pocket" book has 490 pages. It could be called The Complete Whitman. It contains hundreds of poems.
I am a senior citizen who had not read any Whitman for more than 50 years and am enjoying it very much. His descriptions of the 19th century's people, places, and inventions are eye-openers. He was actually a feminist before there was such a concept, and also an abolitionist. He truly believed in equality and democracy. He was a nature lover and wanted to protect the environment.
Of course, there are parts I could quibble about, but that would be foolish. Whitman was a man ahead of his time.

All the stars in Heaven are not enough to rate these poems........2005-06-15
July 4 is the 150th anniversary of the publication of Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass." This volume, if not the single greatest achievement in American letters, is certainly one of them. When I first read "Leaves of Grass" I felt jolted, as if great, loving hands had grabbed me and shaken me into consciousness. I felt live. I'd never read anything remotely like it. Until that moment, I had no idea that simple, everydays words, could be used to such ebullient effect. Since its publictaion it has come to be thought of as an almost holy text. Indeed, there is something almost Christ-like in the love of nature and humanity that Whitman conveys. Even through the bloody civil war and the assassination of our beloved President Lincoln, Whitman was able to find life affirming beauty and hope. That this was composed by an openly gay man edifies all gay people.

What More Can Be Said?.......2007-09-26
It's difficult to think of something appropriate to say about a man who spent his life trying to express the panorama of humanity through the lense of his own heart. From a drop of blood to the grandeur of a shipyard or a continent, he takes all readers on a journey wild with raving, raging, sorrow, longing, humbleness and pride. At once he is totally modern and yet rife with history.
For readers new to poetry, Walt Whitman is wonderfully accessible. One can pick up Leaves of Grass and virtually start and stop anywhere and pick up something wonderful every time.
Not to be missed.

Whitman is the maxim singer of Myself , the human body , sex , the universal fraternity , the democratic equality , he is considered the supreme poet of North America , his work is deeply renovator, has became an inspiration source to the new generations . Leave of grass takes back almost his whole work.
Published for the first time in 1855 , with nine corrected editions just before his death .
America was then the famous symbol of an ideal . The whole world turned its eyes toward America and its athletic democracy . The virtuous capacity of Whitman of being many in one has had many followers such as Sandbourg, Neruda, Lee Masters , Bukowski but there is just one sublime exception : James Joyce in Finnegans Wake .
But besides of him no one has been able to ascend these high peaks as Whitan did.

It is the 1892 edition of Leaves of Grass--commonly called "the Deathbed Edition" that remains the bard's definitive version of what is indisputably an American classic. In Leaves of Grass, Whitman abandoned traditional Victorian poetic forms and language, handled decidedly unconventional subjects and themes, and evoked so personal a tone and so candid a voice that the book offended the few people who read it in the first edition. Only Ralph Waldo Emerson hailed Whitman "at the beginning of a great career." Today Whitman is revered for his accomplishment, and many of his poems are admired as among America's finest: the exquisite personal meditation of Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking; the celebration of the human body and spirit in Song of Myself; the paeans to companionship of the Calamus poems; and the landmark elegy for Abraham Lincoln, When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd. Throughout Leaves of Grass we glimpse the sublime beauty of the natural world and feel Whitman's loving embrace of the common man.

The definitive edition of a misunderstood poet.......2001-03-02
Whenever I hear talk of Walt Whitman, 90% of the time it has something to do with his homosexuality, and very little or nothing to do with his poetry. And when I do hear people talking about or reading writings on his poetry, it is the same cliched talk of the roistering, life-embracing, obscene (for the times) poet of democracy...Whatever exactly that may mean....This deathbed edition gives the lie to this absurdly one dimensional view of a poet who, as it turns out, is actually just as or more concerned with death as with life. Consider some of the following quotes: "And I will show that nothing can happen more beautiful than death"(p.16)..."And to die is different from what any one supposed, and luckier."(p.25)..."Has anyone supposed it lucky to be born? I hasten to inform him or her that it is just as lucky to die..."(p.25)..."What indeed is finally beautiful except death and love?"(p.87)..."O Soul....pondering the themes that thou lovest best, Night, sleep, death and the stars."(p.360)-These are but a few of the quotes that led me to appreciate Walt Whitman as a poet and not some sort of advertising agent for his own ego. The common conception based on a few lines of a few of his poems does him a serious injustice.-This deathbed edition gives us the full scope of his poetic gift. I recommend it to all who are willing to take the time to understand the multidimensional quality of Whitman and his poetry.

Book Description
Could a werewolf be loose in Chicago? Common sense says no. The grisly evidence says yes. So does Harry Dresden. And with his weird connections, he should know....
Customer Reviews:
Good Story, Moderate Execution.......2007-10-09
I like the story, but the writing is a little weak. Unfortunately, the TV show was far better, which rarely happens. I have trouble with the relationship between Dresden and Murphy. Unlike the TV show, here they act like mortal enemies, yet they are actually friends. Very unbelievable. Still, a fun beach read...
How many ways can you spell "werewolf"?.......2007-09-26
According to Harry Dresden's entrapped fairy-spirit, known as "Bob", there are at least four kinds of werewolves, and in this book Harry encounters all of them. This is the most nitty-gritty of the series, full of blood, gore and gutts - but then, it is about werewolves, I suppose, isn't it? I particularly liked the man-wolf of the story, a wolf who shapeshifts into a human instead of the other way around. The chief werewolf, the hapless loup-garou who, like Larry Talbot, is grieved over the curse laid upon him, and the pack of loyal lycanthropes calling themselves the Alphas, who become Harry's friends who are destined to assist him in later adventures. A fast-moving, literally bone-crunching adventure.
Good Series Continues but Flounders a Bit.......2007-09-12
The Dresden Files moves from exploring a dark wizard in the first book in the series, Storm Front, to werewolves in Fool Moon. The various types of werewolves are explored, more of Harry Dresden's powers and past is hinted at, and more of this universe Jim Butcher is building is revealed.
Since the author can assume the reader is familiar with the basics, the pace of this book is much faster than Storm Front. Action, action and more action with many of the same series characters from the first book. I found learning about Butcher's take on werewolves very interesting and enjoyed it very much. My issue with the story is that the final confrontation diluted the power of the main werewolf. In their first confrontation, Butcher wrote about a killing machine that took everything that Harry and Murphy could throw at it and still walked away defiant. In the final battle it seemed a much weaker and slower being, easily delayed and handled. A serious letdown. That said, Butcher has obviously mapped out his universe in detail and I'm looking forward to learning more.
But the biggest weakness is still in the characters. Murphy is starting to annoy me and that's a bad thing because she should be a central character. As written, she's unbelievable. Same with Marcone. His involvement and survival of two major attacks in two books needs to be explained soon because I'm tiring of hearing about how cold and tough he is. I don't care. He doesn't fit in (so far) with a supernatural book unless there is some back story we haven't been told yet. So far I can't think of any hints in that direction so I worry that he's fulfilling some role Butcher thinks he needs. The love interest angle with Susan is fine but a little forced.
Overall, a entertaining read with some disappointment, but will continue to at least book three to see if my complaints are just the growing pains of a good series.
My rating scale is one star for loathed it, two for annoyed I wasted the time to read it, three for it was so-so, four for good read and recommended, five for excellent, must read.
3.5 stars - Run with the pack!.......2007-09-09
The dust has barely settled from the events of Storm Front (The Dresden Files, Book 1), and our new favorite down on his luck wizard-for-hire is in big trouble again, this time from more werewolves than you can shake a stick (or in this case, blasting rod) at. Yes, Harry Dresden is at the center of yet another paranormal murder-mystery, this time surrounded by the mob, the FBI, the police, and a whole host of bloodthirsty werewolves.
Fool Moon may be just the second installment in Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series, but a few pages in I already feel like I'm slipping back into a worn and comfortable pair of shoes. That's partially due to the fact that this series has a strong Dennis Lehane meets J.K. Rowling vibe, and I've read and reread those authors' books to death. Still, there's something reliable about Harry Dresden. You know that no matter what life throws at him (and it's always a lot), he'll still come out the other side with his integrity (if nothing else) intact.
My only real complaint about Fool Moon is that it was so fast-paced and action packed that we really didn't get much in terms of character development aside from Harry's brief conversation with his subconscious, which reminded me greatly of the Lusiphur/Parintachin relationship in the late, great Drew Hayes' Poison Elves series (look it up, you'll thank me later). Still, it's early in the series, and I'm sure Butcher will further flesh out Harry's back story and supporting cast in future volumes.
I still think the Dresden Files series is closer to enjoyable escapist fare than a truly great series, but I can see it edging into that latter category. Either way, you can count me in for book three!
Dresden the wizard.......2007-09-04
I like this series. You get a little werewolf education along with your adventure. The whole series together is an unraveling of Harry Dresden's past as he battles his assorted demons (or vampires or werewolves or faeries)
Book Description
In A Fool Moon, Will Bullas hawks (honks!) his delightful sense of humor as he portrays members of the animal kingdom all dressed up, while comically dressing down our human world. Time for a checkup with The Ducktor? How about a kiss under the Mistletoad? Chapters include Spotlight on Sports, It's a Jungle Out There and A Duck for All Seasons. There's something funny going on around here, and it's not just what Will Bullas paints, it's the pairing of madcap imagery and zingy one-line titles.

Fun, fun and more fun........1999-07-14
A must-have coffee table book. No one that has come into my home since I bought Bullas' book has failed to pick it up and laugh. A great compliment to my taste and Bullas' charm. My teenagers love the book. I've given it as gifts to friends of all ages (my mother loves his work). Thanks for offering something so special.

Book Description
The four phases of the moon are the organizing theme of this poetry collection from a lively and irreverent New Zealand writer. Faraway places, conversations with friends, word games, theatrical elements, and encounters with other writers are among the subjects explored in this entertaining and surprisingly affirmative poetry. Found poems, elegies, and free verse reflections include sardonic and satirical glimpses of modern life.

Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden is Chicagos only openly practicing wizard. He is also dead broke. His vast knowledge and magical skills are unfortunately matched by his talent for making powerful enemies and alienating friends.
With little more than his integrity left, he accepts an offer of work from Lt. Karin Murphy of Chicago's Special Investigations Unit. He wants to redeem himself in Murphy's eyes and make enough money to quiet his rumbling stomach.
Soon he finds himself pinned between trigger-happy FBI agents, shape-shifiting motorcycle gang members, a threatened mobster boss, and an heir to an ancient curse along with his primal fiance. Thrown in environmental activists and a pair of young werewolves in love and you have something of Fool Moon.

Five stars.......2007-09-09
I have never read the book, but James Marsters brings the story to life. He not only reads the book, he acts it. Varying his voice to distinguish different characters.
I recommend this audiobook, it is magic.
Paranormal Adventures - Harry Dresden.......2007-07-17
Having read the books and enjoyed them, I thought that having them as audiobooks would be interesting. Another voice that could bring the world/ stories to life. Well they are well worth buying, the story teller James Marsters is amazing as Harry and the totally entertains the listener. I recommend these books as an amazing way to pass long journeys or spare time. I'm looking forward to the rest of the Harry books in this format and will also buy the books as I love to read the printed word and imagine!
The story is the second outing for Harry and as such further develops his world and the characters within it. Overall a really good story in a world that almost makes the listener want to inhabit it.
Book Description
From Maxim Jakubowski, one of the great authors writing in erotica today, comes his first-ever collection of short stories. For over 20 years Jakubowski has been titillating and terrifying readers with the fusion of sex and mystery in his stories. Call it "noir erotica" — a genre he has made all his own.
