Great!!.......2007-09-05
A great, well written and very funny book!! :-D
You'll learn a lot of Particle Physics amusing yourself!! ;-)
Engaging text and physicist.......2007-08-12
Galileo, Newton, Faraday, Rutherford, and Einstein are just a few of the heroes in Lederman's tale, each one a brilliant detective looking for clues behind the veil of matter.
Extraordinarily accessible, filled with razor-sharp wit and startling storytelling power, The God Particle is a celebration of human curiosity, inviting you to take part in an adventure, finding the solution to a puzzle that will be the greatest discovery of all time.
What Stephen Hawking did for cosmology, Leon Lederman does for particle physics.
brilliant book, but needs updating.......2006-12-30
This is a brilliant book. The book speaks for itself. My words can't do it justice. I think everyone should read this book.
The only thing that bothers me about it is that it needs updating. The author of this new edition did explain in the forward that it was written over a decade ago, in anticipation of the SSC, whose funding got cut. However, that is not enough. If the author or publisher did not want to update the text of the book itself, they should have provided footnotes throughout. For example, when it mentions that the top quark has not been discovered, that deserves a comment about its discovery, if not an appendix. It wouldn't take that much effort to just add footnotes, and it would help make the book more timeless.
Also, the paper in this edition could be better. The quality is not quite as bad as "mass market paperback", but almost.
Regardless of my few negative comments, this is one of the all-time best scientific books written for a popular audience.
Educational and Fun.......2006-07-24
This was a very enjoyable read. Lederman's love of science - both its history and its current practice - comes through on every page. It is a book that can be enjoyed by anyone with curiosity about the universe and what goes on at the smallest scales within it. The only drawback that keeps me from giving it 5 stars is that it is a bit dated now and does not account for some of the latest theories, but it's still well worth reading in spite of that.
Book's title is misleading..........2005-10-12
Should have been titled: "The God Particle - Pg. 366-376" The book speaks very little about the Higgs boson for which it is named after. Instead Lederman focusses on the idea of the unsplittable 'a-tom'. Lederman goes through 'a-tom' history from the early Greek philosophers to the year 1993.
Here are some quick thoughts on the book itself:
(1) As to be expected, the book is a tad bit outdated. Since 1993 the top quark has been found and the SSC has been cancelled (which is unfortunate since he had so much hope for it throughout the book, oops!).
(2) The book has its humor but I would not call it side-splitting. I found it somewhat irritating that he often jumped to a side-story just to tell a joke.
(3) An earlier reviewer said it contained "dense math" though the only few equations that are in the book are to show what people put on t-shirts or to show that the symbol 'M' is different from 'm' which he explains anyway. Any particle decay 'equations' are to be taken as givens for the reader.
(4) The history is decent.
The book was worth reading, though I am not sure who it was written for. On one hand, people looking for information on the Higgs would not wish to read the majority of this book's content. On the other hand, people looking for history on the idea of an 'a-tom' would not pick a book called "The God Particle".
Book Description
The Higgs Hunter's Guide is a definitive and comprehensive guide to the physics of Higgs bosons. In particular, it discusses the extended Higgs sectors required by those recent theoretical approaches that go beyond the Standard Model, including supersymmetry and superstring-inspired models.

There is a divine spark within us all.
In one man, that spark is about to explode.
American businessman Steve Keeley is hurtled three stories to the cold cobblestone street in Zurich. In the days that follow, a doctor performs miraculous surgery on Keeley, who wakes up to find that everything about his world has changed. He seems to sense things before they happen, and he thinks he’s capable of feats that are clearly impossible. It’s a strange and compelling new world for him, one he quickly realizes is also incredibly dangerous.
Meanwhile at a $12 billion facility in hardscrabble North Texas, a super collider lies two hundred feet beneath the Earth’s surface. Leading a team of scientists, Mike McNair, a brilliant physicist, works to uncover one of the universe’s greatest secrets–a theoretical particle that binds the universe together, often called The God Particle. When his efforts are undermined by the man who has poured his own vast fortune into the project, McNair begins to suspect that something in his research has gone very, very wrong.
Now, these two men are about to come together, battling mysteries of science and of the soul–and venturing to a realm beyond reason, beyond faith, perhaps even beyond life and death.

Entertainment that will make you think........2007-06-13
The God Particle is an interesting read, to say the least. Mr. Cox manages to combine science, theology, and even a bit of romance in this novel of suspense and intrigue. Personally, I would have liked to have seen a bit more character development for a couple of the characters, but overall it was a solid effort. I will certainly look forward to future works by Mr. Cox.
No Content.......2007-03-19
This SF novel starts out with an interesting pair of plot lines: A man falls from a window and yet is somehow alive. A scientist in Texas is looking for Higgs particles.
Then the novel gets bogged down in naïve theological dialog and (I'm being nitpicky here) biblical errors.
However, the sex scenes and disrespect of marriage were the last straw. I put this down after reading two-thirds. It showed no promise at all.
Entertaining Possibilities.......2006-11-19
Richard Cox has written an exciting work of fiction melding the diverse perspectives of his characters, quantum physics, religion, romance, and conspiracy theory into an accelerating read.
The science is woven into the book in a way that appeals to both science minded non-fiction readers and those who enjoy the fantasy of fiction.
His characters are human, rich, and vivid allowing empathy for even the ones I loved to hate. I enjoyed the conversations of science and religion and found them to be as engaging as the plot itself. The last half of the book really speeds up, keeping the reader pushing towards the end to reveal the answers.
The God Particle is a book about seeking answers. If you spend time pondering the deep questions, I recommend giving the God Particle a read. Also pick up Rift by Richard Cox. You'll dig it.
Literary Bait and Switch.......2005-12-30
I bought this novel in part due to the description on the back cover and in part because it came recommended by a shelf tag from a store employee touting this novel as a "high concept" bit of science fiction that blends spiritual themes with emerging ideas in physics.
For me, this novel failed to deliver what was promised. I'm a big fan of books about the metaphysics of quantum mechanics. Among my favorites is Gary Zukav's "The Dancing Wu Li Masters" which gave a great intro to quantum physics and tied it in very well with metaphysical and even spiritual implications.
While "The God Particle" has Mike McNair and Dallas news anchor Kelly Smith engaged in an airplane coversation about the relative territories of science, reason, and faith, these are never explored much beyond seeming contention between science and spirituality. There's no common ground explored aside from each being ways of seeing the universe.
In fact, in 300 pages of novel, I'd estimate that barely 30 pages of the entire book are spent exploring the implications of discovering the Higgs boson or of the experiment performed on Steve Keely in which he seems at first to be able to sense the Higgs field. Most of the story was spent on the sexual liasons and betrayals of various characters. This book was more a poorly-constructed tale of lust than an exploration of how the Higgs boson might be a key link between the worlds of human consciousness and the fundamental construction of reality.
If Cox had spent as much energy dealing with the implications of the science as he did voyeurism, sexual betrayal, and failed relationships, this might have been a read worthy of being called science fiction. As it was, the science felt like draping around a Harlequin paperback, much as you would find the trappings of pirates or colonial America.
When the narrative finally turned the bulk of its attention to the subject at hand near the end of the novel, the connection between the experimental brain surgery performed on Steve Keely and the superconducting super collider in Texas felt rushed and poorly explained, as if the author realized he had to drag the tale out of the bedroom and back into the science to wrap up a loose end or two.
Fiction or Future Possibility?.......2005-08-21
The God Particle has all of the trappings of a very interesting story. It has intrigue, mystery, action, romance and, of course, science. As one who has an interest in Physics, I found the scientific content of the story fascinating as the author adeptly presented some fairly involved theories through conversation and introspection. While the story is a work of fiction, I believe the more important work contained on the pages within are of the possibilities that still exist in the universe, many of which we can yet only dream. It was both entertaining and enlightening.

Book Description
Despite the great success of the standard model of electroweak and strong interactions to describe the phenomena observed in high energy physics experiments, the mechanism by which the elementary particles are endowed with their masses is yet to be unraveled. Does nature choose the Higgs mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking as predicted by the standard model, or do we need some alternative explanation? The purpose of the workshop is to capture new trends and ideas in this exciting area of fundamental physics, and to explore the potential of recent (LEPI), present (HERA, LEPII, SLC, Tevatron), and future (FMC, LHC, NLC) colliding-beam experiments to shed light on the Higgs puzzle.

Book Description
For successful African-American businesswoman Zoe Reynard, finding the pleasure she wants, the way she wants it, is not worth the risk of losing everything she has: marriage to the man she has loved since childhood, a thriving company, three wonderful children. But Zoe feels helpless in the grip of an overpowering addiction...to sex.
Finding a compassionate woman therapist to help her, Zoe finally summons the courage to tell her torrid story, a tale of guilt and desire as shocking as it is compelling. From the sensitive artist with whom she spends stolen hours on rumpled sheets to the rough and violent man who draws her toward destruction,Zoe is a woman desperately searching for fulfillment -- and something darker, deeper, and perhaps deadly. As her life spins out of control and her sexual escapades carry her toward a dangerous choice, Zoe is racing against time to uncover the source of her "fatal attraction" -- as chilling secrets tumble forth from the recesses of a woman's mind, and perilous temptations lead toward a climax that can threaten her sanity, her marriage...and her life.

Book Description
Four disillusioned Tokyo teenagers who have never met are suddenly drawn together by a mysterious chain mail message sent to their cell phones. In the tradition of classical Japanese tanka poetry, each teen takes on a role in the intriguing and absorbing narrative: the schoolgirl stalked by an older boy; her mysterious stalker; the schoolgirl's boyfriend; and the female detective. Written from each character's point of view, Chain Mail carries the reader on a suspenseful adventure juxtaposing teenage angst against a colorful Tokyo backdrop in an unforgettable tale that blurs the boundaries between reality and fantasy. âRichly plotted to play on the love young adults have for thrills and chills; not a single weak link binding it together.â â"ActiveAnime.com

Great translation!.......2007-08-27
For years, I have loved the anime. I was hoping someone would translate the books, and was happy to stumble across them in a bookstore. The books are better than the anime, and fill in some great details that the anime left out. It was also nice to see the artist's Ahb language that he created for the books. Though it can take a little getting used to the new words for things, I thought it added a nice, original element to the books. (The anime only used the true Ahb language for a couple words/phrases.) If you love the anime, you should read these books!
Reviews on this page do not refer to this title.......2007-03-29
I have not read the book yet so I cannot honestly review it.
My rating is based on the Anime which is absolutely awesome.
It is clear though that neither the editorial review abowe nor the other reviews on this page refer to the novel "Crest of the Stars II"!
A suspenseful thriller I recommend to young readers.......2007-02-08
A group of bored teenage girls, who all have problems they wish to run away from, enter the anonymous world of online RPGs only to find themselves in a more terrifying situation than their previous ones.
Although the ending was a little too...unpredictable for my taste, the story was engaging throughout and kept me squirming at the edge of my seat. The translations were pretty accurate as well and did a good job of maintaining the original author's voice. Overall, a thrilling, original, and startlingly realistic work.
Links in the Chain.......2007-01-20
Sawako, an overachieving junior high school student, is extremely lonely. Her mother is gone, her father distant, and her friends are non-existant. When she receives an email on her cell phone inviting her to be a part of an interactive story, she jumps at the chance to belong - even though the message came from someone she does not know.
Two other junior high girls receive similar emails on their phones: Mayumi, who lives in the shadow of her intelligent and athletic best friend, and Mai, who would rather go clubbing (for the music, not necessarily the scene) than deal with the high expectations of diplomat family.
They develop a story about a young girl, her tutor, her stalker, and a detective. Each girl writes for a certain character and posts their chapters at the website. The mysterious Yukari, the girl who started it all, writes the role of the stalker. As the story's suspense escalates, life begins to imitate art. Suddenly, Sawako goes missing in both stories, leaving the other girls to wonder what happened to her - and if it will happen to them next.
Chain Mail: Addicted to You by Hiroshi Ishizaki embraces the story-within-a-story format from the very beginning, and keeps raising the stakes until the vey end. Cell phones are ever-present, making this cautionary tale ultra-contemporary. While racing through the book to find out who done it, American readers will subconsciously learn about Japanese culture and schooling.
Chain Mail comes courtesy of Pop Fiction, a new teen fiction imprint from TokyoPop.
The continuation of a great SF saga.......2007-01-17
Crest of the Stars: A Modest War picks up right where the first novel, Princess of the Empire, left off. Which is a good thing since Princess of the Empire ended off with a cliffhanger: Jinto and Lafiel were being held captive by Baron Febdash, who captured them when their desperate escape from the United Mankind fleet brought them to his orbital palace hoping to obtain fuel and supplies. Princess Lafiel has decided to take matters into her own hands and has started a rebellion among the Baron's vassals.
Just to give a quick recap, Seikai is an immensely popular space-opera series by Japanese author Hiroyuki Morioka. Anime and manga adaptations have been available in English translation for some time, but this is the first time the original novels have been translated into English. It was well worth the wait.
In the second novel we get more insight into the psyche and culture of the Seikai series' primary focus: the Abh. They are genetically engineered warriors who have made space their home, disdaining the planets inhabited by "landers." Over centuries they have built a massive empire based on both conquest and trade. We learn more about their history, including the terrible "original sin" which burdens the prideful Abh.
The real delight of this novel is to see the blossoming relationship between Princess Lafiel and Jinto, the "accidental noble" lander who had his Abh title thrust upon him when he was a young boy. Brought together by chance, they now find themselves fighting for their lives and their freedom as both war and treachery threaten them at every turn. They become refugees, trying to hide and survive in enemy territory. Though their friendship grows and they are able to work together, their radically different backgrounds too often get in the way. They are very much an odd couple, and old prejudices threaten to tear them apart. But each comes to find unexpected sources of strength in the other, and they are able to persevere together for another day.
The Crest of the Stars trilogy will conclude with the third novel "Return to a Strange World." But that will be just the beginning of a long epic, hopefully we will see the rest of the story that is still being released and enjoyed in Japan.
I enjoyed the second novel as much as the first. The adventure and conflict is peppered with delightful moments of humor and irony. Fans of the anime or manga series should note that it is in the second novel where we really start to see a great deal of material which never made it into the adaptations. We finally get the story complete and unabridged.
