This book manifests the author's unique perspective on physics.
The author claims that the profound aspect of quantum gauge fields is that they can almost be regarded as the theory of strings. These strings are in essence the Faraday flux lines.
The deeper understanding of quantum physics involving gauge fields demands the study of dynamics of quantum strings.
Quantum strings turn out to produce the graviton thus can
give a theory of quantum gravity.
These are all pioneered by the author for past three decades and
neatly explained in this book.

The goal of this Volume "Conceptual Foundations of Materials: A standard model for ground- and excited-state properties" is to present the fundamentals of electronic structure theory that are central to the understanding and prediction of materials phenomena and properties. The emphasis is on foundations and concepts. The Sections are designed to offer a broad and comprehensive perspective of the field. They cover the basic aspects of modern electronic structure approaches and highlight their applications to the structural (ground state, vibrational, dynamic and thermodynamic, etc.) and electronic (spectroscopic, dielectric, magnetic, transport, etc.) properties of real materials including solids, clusters, liquids, and nanostructure materials. This framework also forms a basis for studies of emergent properties arising from low-energy electron correlations and interactions such as the quantum Hall effects, superconductivity, and other cooperative phenomena.

Although some of the basics and models for solids were developed in the early part of the last century by figures such as Bloch, Pauli, Fermi, and Slater, the field of electronic structure theory went through a phenomenal growth during the past two decades, leading to new concepts, understandings, and predictive capabilities for determining the ground- and excited-state properties of real, complex materials from first principles. For example, theory can now be used to predict the existence and properties of materials not previously realized in nature or in the laboratory. Computer experiments can be performed to examine the behavior of individual atoms in a particular process, to analyze the importance of different mechanisms, or just to see what happen if one varies the interactions and parameters in the simulation. Also, with ab initio calculations, one can determine from first principles important interaction parameters which are needed in model studies of complex processes or highly correlated systems. Each time a new material or a novel form of a material is discovered, electronic structure theory inevitably plays a fundamental role in unraveling its properties.

In sciences, "simple" low-dimensional models are often called into play to understand and clarify fundamental processes involved in complicated physical phenomena. Universal models which can be applied to illustrate a variety of effects of different physical origin are rare and, therefore, they are of CRUCIAL importance.
Recently, with respect to this, Frenkel-Kontorova type models have attracted so much attention for their ability to describe a broad spectrum of phenomena of distinct physical origin as, for example, fundamental aspects in tribology and mass transport, Josephson transmission lines, DNA dynamics, charge-density waves, commensurable-incommensurable phase transitions and so on. It is possible to count almost 200 publications, in the last 5 years only, in the most relevant scientific journals related to Frenkel-Kontorova models.
Braun and Kivshar are undoubtedly internationally famous specialists in Solid State Physics and Nonlinear Physics of discrete dynamical systems, and their book represents certainly a comprehensive and exhaustive treatment (from fundamentals to recent and advanced developments) of the subject. Describing fundamental concepts and theoretical procedures of nonlinear dynamics, related numerical techniques and methods, down to possible experimental and technological applications based on this intriguing model and its generalizations, this book suits both the needs of students and beginners as well as the requests of most experienced researchers wishing to be acquainted with new and complementary aspects in this field. The table of contents, together with an up to date list of references, shows at first glance the comprehensiveness of the treatment.
Personally, as an active researcher in this field, I would highly recommend the book to both graduate students and any much more experienced scientist who is working or just interested in nonlinear dynamics and condensed matter modeling.

As an active researcher on this field, I find this book will become THE reference. The authors, with over 20 years of experience themselves, take you from the basics to the current hot topics. Their coverage is certainly exhaustive, with an up to date list of 876 references. All aspects of the Frenkel-Kontorova/sine-Gordon model are discussed, from statistical mechanics to the effect of forces through the thermal version. The mathematical details are provided but also commented upon in extent for the reader to grasp their implications. One point I particularly liked is that the connection between Frenkel-Kontorova and sine-Gordon is always kept in mind along the book, a point that had been an obscure one for me when touching upon different aspects of the problem. The chapter on applications helps make the link between the different disguises of the model. Finally, I do believe the book will be useful for a more general audience interested in nonlinear problems beyond those discussed, as most of the techniques and viewpoints apply in general. All in all, a must for researchers in nonlinear science and condensed matter models, and an excellent way to introduce oneself to this subject for anybody beginning to work on it, as no background is assumed.

BLue Smoke (and lots of it).......2007-10-01

I just finished "Blue Smoke" and I liked the book. Yes, there is violence and sometimes a little too graphic for me but I have the ability to skim through some of the descriptions and move on. TO me the focus and essence of the book is about a wonderful close knit Italian family who love and support each other. There are some wonderful humorous moments with Reena and her family and then between her and Bo. The romance between her and Bo was fun, he being caring but strong enough to not her run over him. As far as I'm concerned, the whole Arson is really not the important part of the book but how Reena and her family and other secondary characters handled the stress and horror of this madman. As I said some of the descriptions of the fires and what he did to the people were more than I needed to know. However, this is Nora Roberts style; usually a strong family connection, some great humor, along with a good romance, and of course a lot of suspense in graphic detail. It makes for a well-rounded book and kept my attention. I get bored with just a romance if nothing else is going on. I would have read this book just for the wonderful Irish/Italian family. I wished I could run into Siroco's and order a pizza. :) By the way if you have seen the movie based on this book,it's not nearly as good as the book.

depends what you are looking for.......2007-09-14

I first started reading Nora Roberts through her alter ego JD Robb. I very much enjoy those books so I thought I would try some from her own moniker. This is my first, and I enjoyed it as well. The only thing is that the steamy sections were a little uncomfortable for me, and I think it is because they are written from the female perspective. However, I think I learned a bit about what women (or at least this woman) likes in a man. But back to the book - first rate suspense. One thing I really like about her writing is that she doesn't always make you wait until the very end to find out who the baddie is like so many others do. It just goes to show that you don't have to do that to keep the suspense and tautness to the story.

Where there's smoke, there's fire, right? Just warning you, there's lots of fire in this one, and - yikes to the highest degree - crispy critters.... Adults only warning! The villain in this book is a pyromaniac murderer who is ghastly, revolting and blood-chilling. A maniac at worst, a slavering lunatic with an insane personal quest at best. Shudder, shudder, shudder! Nora, where does it come from?! The story itself is absolutely fabulous. It follows a young girl Reena, and works her up through different ages into an adult, a cop in the arson unit. Her family is a mix of Irish and Italian, big, noisy and passionate. As in all Nora's books, you simply get sucked into the family until you feel like part of it. Such is her skill. Obviously it takes some time for Reena to meet her hero, given she's young to start with. But Nora weaves him right through the preceding story, giving us intriguing glimpses of him before they finally meet. You'll laugh at the meeting itself - he comes across as being totally deranged, and she's ready to shoot him or something. But oh, the romance is lush and generous, as always. But please, check your smoke alarms and fire extinguishers today, everyone...

Flawed romantic suspense........2007-06-25

This was my fourth attempt at Nora Roberts and, although not without flaws, the best so far. "Irish Thoroughbred" and "Irish Rebel" were rather uniteresting romance novels and "Jewels of the Sun" was too tedious to read past the first 100 pages. "Blue Smoke" is part romance, part suspense. Both the romance and the suspense parts are rather well written, but the overall result is so-so. Those looking for a romance may find the suspense story distracting and vice versa. There are also too many minor subplots that slows down the pace of the novel, and it takes an unbelievably long time for Reena to figure out who her nemesis is.

So, overall, "Blue Smoke" is a so-so novel. Its biggest flaw is that it never really decides whether to be a romance novel or a suspense novel, ultimately not quite succeeding to be either.

Disappointed.......2007-06-10

I am a long-time NR's fan, and I was very disappointed by this book. The "mystery" was a complete no-brainer, the main character is fairly fleshed out but does a few stupid things that left me shaking my head, the villain is sadistic and thoroughly unlikable so you can't even have fun rooting for him. The procedural aspects on fire investigation are somewhat interesting, and the protagonist's family members can be entertaining (if somewhat stereotypically "Italian"), but on the whole I found this book predictable and unpleasant.

Enjoyable listening.......2007-05-13

I bought this CD collection because I love Nora Roberts books and I am on the road a lot. I enjoyed listening to Northern Lights and Blue Smoke, but didn't care for the narrator for Birthright. If I didn't like the story itself so much, I probably wouldn't have been able to endure listening to it till the end.

If you like listening to books on CD I would still recommend buying this collection. I felt 2nd and 3rd stories were well narrated. You may like Birthright, but I just couldn't warm to the narrator's voice for the main characters. I still gave this cd collection 4 stars. I will definitely keep my collection.

This book pretty much tells the North American story of scooter lifestyle. It's not a tech book and it's not a book for people with European fantasies. This book covers how we do it in the states. I like that it has a fair share of Northwest coverage.

Scooters represent a lifestyle that is often overlooked in books that present the machines as objects of desire and affection. This books does both exceptionally. It reveals the history of the scooter and the subsequent scenes that grew up around it with it's primary focus being the North American scene. Great photos and beautiful layout. This is a must-have book for scooterists and those yearning to learn about scooters and their appeal.

How Reagan won and why Carter lost the election of 1980.......2007-07-23

Two veteran political columnists, Witcover and Germond, provide intriguing information on the strategists and politicians who masterminded the 1980 election campaigns. The authors argue that uncontrollable and unforeseeable events rather than issues determined the victor of this election. The authors include coverage on the campaigns of Teddy Kennedy, Howard baker, Robert Dole and John Anderson. I recommend this book for its seemingly unbiased look. A must for any interested in U.S. Presidential Campaigns.

Solid, Straightforward Narrative.......2005-12-11

This straightforward account of the 1980 race for the Presidency recreates events and the state of the USA in vivid yet concise detail. The authors show the naked manipulation, dirty moves, and diverging media coverage that was part of U.S. politics. Readers see that President Jimmy Carter was decent and honest (despite a mean streak) but his grip seemed uncertain as gas prices soared and hostages sat in Tehran. Carter beat back Ted Kennedy's primary challenge, but was not in a strong position for the fall campaign. His challenger Ronald Reagan swept easily to the nomination at age 69, but a series of foolish utterances left many questioning his fitness for the job. Congressman John Anderson's third-party candidacy started strong (23 percent in June polls), but without funds he faded fast. In the end, inflation, hostages, and Carter's low approval ratings led to an easy win for Reagan.

The authors wrote four straight books on U.S. Presidential campaigns from 1980-1992, and Whitcover wrote a very good narrative (Marathon) alone in 1976. This is a solid and straightforward narrative for history fans and political junkies.

As Always, A Must Read.......2002-07-23

Like everything written by politics' dynamic duo, this book is excellent. Witcover and Germond wrote books on Presidential elections from 1976 to 1992, taking off from where White left off (the Carter/Ford book is actually Witcover alone). This one is about Carter Reagan, and it is fabulous. It's a nuts and bolts horse race book, and one of the finest of the type. The description of Reagan as a bumbler with no real vision will surprise those who imagine that Reagan was perceived as some sort of political giant in his time. The depiction of Carter as the ineffective moderate challenged on the left by Te Kennedy will also surprise readers not familiar with the times. Although it is all excellent, the account of Kennedy's sputtering inarticulate attempt to unseat Carter is probably the best part, also notable is the treatment of the early Republican battles (although I could would have liked to here more about the lessor Republicans in the field, especially Phil Crane). Also of interest to those outside the political mainstream is Anderson's mistreatment by the political establishment. Needless to say, this presages similar troubles suffered by Perot and Nader in later elections, especially the debate committees refusal to consider a debate until his numbers had fallen down enough that he could be excluded under their rules. This action renders the sham democracy of America naked. Read It. A

Best Political Book I've Read - Exposes Carter Completely.......2002-02-03

This tightly edited classic wisely uses a straightforward, chronological approach in bringing the 1980 Presidential election to vivid life. It is not overly long as these authors' book on Bush vs Dukakis '88 election was. Well worth the hassle
of buying used.
Carter's lack of political instincts and his often contradictory personality (usually conciliatory yet capacle of pettiness and vindictiveness) are well illustrated here. The '80 primary elections are wonderfully covered, even minor candidiates such as Howard Baker and Robert Dole are covered. Teddy Kennedy's only presidential campaign is thoroughly dissected. The authors evenhandedly cover the Reagan and Carter and (remember) John Anderson campaigns. Buy it!

Superb.......1999-11-28

These authors know politics like few others and this is a terrific book. An outstanding anaysis of an election, full of insight, intelligence, and the wisdom of experienced reporters.

Crime story - romance.......2006-12-09

Crime mystery / romance by the diva of this genre. Renna is from a close knit Italian-American family who own a pizzaria in a Baltimore neighborhood. Due to an arson fire at the restaurant when Renna was a child, she focuses her energy on studying to become an arson investigator. Through the years, there are other mysterious fires and the unsolved death of Renna's first love.

Bo is a carpenter who had seen Renna several years before at a college party and considered her his "dream girl". Try as he may, he could never connect with her until many years later. The romance between Renna and Bo takes place during the increasingly blatant and more personal arson fires plaguing Renna.

This is a pretty good and quick read that I enjoyed until the ending. After a fair amount of tension, the ending was a little rushed. The romance is a little predictable, but I would still have liked to see more of Renna and Bo.
