    Book Description

Gaskinetic Theory is an introductory text on the molecular theory of gases and on modern transport theory suitable for upper division undergraduates in physics and first year graduate students in aerospace engineering, upper atmospheric science and space research. The first part introduces basic concepts, including the distribution function, classical theory of specific heats, binary collisions, mean free path, and reaction rates. Transport theory is used to express coefficients such as viscosity and heat conductivity in terms of molecular properties. The second part of the book covers advanced transport theory. Generalized transport equations are derived from the Boltzmann equation. The Chapman-Enskog and the Grad methods are discussed to obtain higher order transport equations for low density gases. The aerodynamics of solid bodies is explored and the book concludes with the kinetic description of shock waves.

        Book Description

The book presents the mathematical tools used to deal with problems related to slow rarefied flows, with particular attention to basic concepts and problems which arise in the study of micro- and nanomachines. The mathematical theory of slow flows is presented in a practically complete fashion and provides a rigorous justification for the use of the linearized Boltzmann equation, which avoids costly simulations based on Monte Carlo methods. The book surveys the theorems on validity and existence, with particular concern for flows close to equilibria, and discusses recent applications of rarefied lubrication theory to micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). It gives a general acquaintance of modern developments of rarefied gas dynamics in various regimes with particular attention to low speed microscale gas dynamics.

Senior students and graduates in applied mathematics, aerospace engineering, and mechanical mathematical physics will be provided with a basis for the study of molecular gas dynamics. The book will also be useful for scientific and technical researchers engaged in the research on gas flow in MEMS.

          Book Description

This monograph gives a comprehensive description of the relationship and connections between kinetic theory and fluid dynamics, mainly for a time-independent problem in a general domain. Ambiguities in this relationship are clarified, and the incompleteness of classical fluid dynamics in describing the behavior of a gas in the continuum limit—recently reported as the ghost effect—is also discussed. The approach used in this work engages an audience of theoretical physicists, applied mathematicians, and engineers. By a systematic asymptotic analysis, fluid-dynamic-type equations and their associated boundary conditions that take into account the weak effect of gas rarefaction are derived from the Boltzmann system. Comprehensive information on the Knudsen-layer correction is also obtained. Equations and their boundary conditions are carefully classified depending on the physical context of problems. Applications are presented to various physically interesting phenomena, including flows induced by temperature fields, evaporation and condensation problems, examples of the ghost effect, and bifurcation of flows. Key features: * many applications and physical models of practical interest * experimental works such as the Knudsen compressor are examined to supplement theory * engineers will not be overwhelmed by sophisticated mathematical techniques * mathematicians will benefit from clarity of definitions and precise physical descriptions given in mathematical terms * appendices collect key derivations and formulas, important to the practitioner, but not easily found in the literature Kinetic Theory and Fluid Dynamics serves as a bridge for those working in different communities where kinetic theory or fluid dynamics is important: graduate students, researchers and practitioners in theoretical physics, applied mathematics, and various branches of engineering. The work can be used in graduate-level courses in fluid dynamics, gas dynamics, and kinetic theory; some parts of the text can be used in advanced undergraduate courses.

            Book Description

The Kinetic Theory of Gases has applications in many areas of science and technology as well as in our understandings of many natural processes and phenomena from the nano-scale up to the cosmic-scale. Some of the fields and topics affected include manufacturing, health care, weather, defence, pollution, aerospace science and engineering, and others. In particular, the interactions of rarefied gases with surfaces are of great interest because such interactions can have pronounced effects on the behaviour exhibited by those systems in all of the above fields. Such fundamental things as the transfer of mass, momentum, and energy between the components of a system can be significantly altered by such interactions. Collectively this transfer is typically described in terms of Rarefied Gas Dynamics and Transport Theory which generally go hand-in-hand with the Kinetic Theory of Gases. When this transport involves small particles suspended in a gas such as air, it is typically termed Aerosol Mechanics. Thus, this book should prove to be a very useful tool in virtually all application areas involving the Kinetic Theory of Gases, Rarefied Gas Dynamics, Transport Theory, and Aerosol Mechanics. This book is designed to serve a dual function. It is intended that it be capable of serving as a teaching instrument, either in a classroom environment or independently, for the study of basic analytical methods and mathematical techniques that may be used in the Kinetic Theory of Gases and is primarily suitable for use in graduate level physics and engineering courses on the subject. This book should also prove to be useful as a reference for scientists and engineers working in the fields of Rarefied Gas Dynamics and Aerosol Mechanics. In addition, the material in this book may prove to be of interest to individuals working in such areas as Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or any other applied discipline in which gas-surface interactions can be expected to play a significant role.

                  Book Description

Kinetic Theory of granular Gases provides an introduction to the rapidly developing theory of dissipative gas dynamics as it has been developed mainly during the past decade. The book is aimed at readers from the advanced undergraduate level onwards and leads up to the present state of
research. The text is self-contained, in the sense that no mathematical or physical knowledge is required that goes beyond standard undergraduate physics courses. The material is adequate for a one-semester course and contains chapter summaries as well as exercises with detailed solutions. Special
emphasis is put on a microscopically consistent description of pairwise particle collisions which leads to an impact-velocity dependent coefficient of restitution. The description of the many-particle system, based on the Boltzmann equation, starts with the derivation of the velocity distribution
function, followed by the investigation of self-diffusion and Brownian motion. Using hydrodynamical methods, transport processes and self-organized structure formulation are studies. An appendix gives a brief introduction to event-driven molecular dynamics. A second appendix describes a novel
mathematical technique for the derivation of the kinetic properties which allows for the application of computer algebra. The book is accompanied by a web page where the molecular dynamics program as well as the computer-algebra programs are provided.

                    Book Description

The well known transport laws of Navier-Stokes and Fourier fail for the simulation of processes on lengthscales in the order of the mean free path of a particle that is when the Knudsen number is not small enough. Thus, the proper simulation of flows in rarefied gases requires a more detailed description. This book discusses classical and modern methods to derive macroscopic transport equations for rarefied gases from the Boltzmann equation, for small and moderate Knudsen numbers, i.e. at and above the Navier-Stokes-Fourier level. The main methods discussed are the classical Chapman-Enskog and Grad approaches, as well as the new order of magnitude method, which avoids the short-comings of the classical methods, but retains their benefits. The relations between the various methods are carefully examined, and the resulting equations are compared and tested for a variety of standard problems. The book develops the topic starting from the basic description of an ideal gas, over the derivation of the Boltzmann equation, towards the various methods for deriving macroscopic transport equations, and the test problems which include stability of the equations, shock waves, and Couette flow.

                    Book Description

This book is devoted to the presentation of rigorous mathematical results in the kinetic theory of a gas of hard spheres. Recent developments as well as classical results are presented in a unified way, such that the book should become the standard reference on the subject. There is no such book available at present. The reader will find a systematic treatment of the main mathematical results, a discussion of open problems, and a guide to the existing literature. There is a rigorous and comprehensive presentation of strict validation of the Boltzmann equations, global existence theory, and the fluid-dynamical limits. The authors also review and discuss classical derivation and properties of the Boltzmann equation, particle simulation methods, and boundary conditions.

4 out of 5 stars A reference text on rigorous Bolztmannia........2000-04-05

Written by some of the masters of the italian school of mathematical-physics, this book is a survey of rigorous results on the Boltzmann equation and various topics surrounding it. Trying to organize such an amount of material in a 350 pgs. book is an ambitious and breathtaking task. So the book is not an easy and systematic treatise, but a compilation of diverse results in the area, which is very needed, as they are scattered in a vast technical literature. Particularly welcome is a complete exposition of Landford's result on the validity of the Boltzmann equation, a (partial) realization of Boltzmann's dream and a real triumph of mathematical-physics. On the other hand, the chapter on hydrodynamic limits is extremely concise.

In any case, this book should be a standard reference in the field. Indicated to mathematical-physicists and mathematicians alike.

From acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Greg Iles comes a cutting-edge thriller in which the next phase of human evolution may not be human at all....

In a secret government lab, America's top scientists work on Trinity -- a supercomputer that could surpass the power of the human mind. As the project's ethicist, Dr. David Tennant works in a firestorm of limitless science and ruthless ambition. After a fellow scientist is murdered, David uncovers who the killer is. Desperate, he turns to Rachel Weiss, the psychiatrist probing the nightmares that have plagued him since joining the project, and both are forced to flee for their lives.

Pursued around the globe, David and Rachel piece together the truth behind Project Trinity, and the apocalyptic power it possesses. But Trinity's countdown has already begun, and humanity is now held hostage by a form of life that cannot be destroyed. The only hope for survival lies in the shocking connection that exists between Trinity and David's tortured mind. Mankind's future hangs in the balance -- and the price of failure is extinction.

From the acclaimed New York Times bestselling author comes a cutting-edge new thriller rich with imagination and vision. In the heart of North Carolina's Research Triangle stands a corporate laboratory much like the others nearby. But behind its walls, America's top scientists work around the clock to attain the holy grail of the twenty-first century -- a supercomputer that surpasses the power of the human mind. Appointed by the president as ethicist to Project Trinity, Dr. David Tennant finds himself in a pressure cooker of groundbreaking science and colossal ambition. When his friend and fellow scientist is murdered, David discovers that the genius who runs Project Trinity was responsible and that his own life is in danger. Unable to reach the president, and afraid to trust his colleagues, David turns to Rachel Weiss, the psychiatrist probing the nightmares that have plagued him during his work at Trinity. Rachel is skeptical of David's fears, but when an assassin strikes, the two doctors must flee for their lives. Pursued across the globe by ruthless National Security Agency operatives, David and Rachel struggle to piece together the truth behind Project Trinity and the enormous power it could unleash upon the world. As constant danger deepens their intimacy, Rachel realizes the key to Trinity lies buried in David's disturbed mind. But Trinity's clock is ticking... Mankind is being held hostage by a machine that cannot be destroyed. Its only hope -- a terrifying chess game between David and the Trinity computer, with the cities of the world as pawns. But what are the rules? How human is the machine? Can one man and woman change the course of history? Man's future hangs in the balance, and the price of failure is extinction.

                    5 out of 5 stars Totally original!!.......2007-09-12

Awesome storyline with a super beginning. Most of Greg's books that I've read have that great un-put-downable quality, and this one is no exception.

4 out of 5 stars Good, not great Isles.......2007-08-16

As a big Greg Isles fan, I have been spoiled by his caliber of writing. The plot is uneven in spots, but still manages to be a page-turner. As a computer scientist, I question some of the underlying premises, but that did not detrct from my enjoyment.

                    4 out of 5 stars pretty good.......2007-06-08

i would say the last 100 pages were the best part of the book, however that doesnt mean the rest of the book was bad, it just means the last 100 pages were that good. though i didnt think the ending was great, i didnt think it was horrible either. it was just a different perspective that i thought of.

some parts of the book were predictable, other parts were just far fetched, but i would definately read this book again in the future if just for those last 100 pages.

another thing, i measure books by if when im reading it, i cant wait to find out what happens, this is one of those types of books for me.

2 out of 5 stars Not One of My Favorites.......2007-04-27

I've read eight of Greg Iles' novels, and THE FOOTPRINTS OF GOD is probably the most disappointing one.

I do admire what Iles tried to do here. This book has an enormously ambitious sci-fi plot that tries to combine all sorts of interesting ideas about religion, technology, quantum mechanics, and new age spirtuality. Unfortunately, Iles' reach exceeds his grasp in this case, and the end result is something of a mess. There are just too many ideas and concepts thrown into this book, and they never really gel together into a well-paced, believable story.

Even worse, there is no depth of characterization in this novel. All the characters are cardboard, and the villains are simply cartoons. The romance between the two main characters just kind of happens and there's no real effort to develop it. When I don't really care for the protagonists, it's hard for me to feel truly engaged by a book such as this one. That's a shame, because Iles' is normally very good at creating fascinating characters.

I enjoy most of Iles' work, and heartily recommend novels such as THE QUIET GAME, DEAD SLEEP, BLOOD MEMORY, and 24 HOURS. Iles is a writer of enormous intelligence and range, and I give him credit for taking chances. But my advice is to skip this particular effort.

5 out of 5 stars Who is God?.......2007-04-03

A mixture of religion, science, philosophy, hi-tech, and murder. This is the story of one mans search for ultimate power and another mans quest to stop him. A journey seen through the pursuers eyes from present time to the birth of the universe with possible scenarios for the future.
Written in the 1st person, every chapter moves right along culminating in an ending which although improbable is a distinct possibility.

5 out of 5 stars Fulfilling Your Destiny.......2007-03-30

O'Leary tells the stories of Raoul Wallenberg, Sir Thomas More, Florence Nightingale, Sir Winston Churchill, Booker T. Washington, General Jimmy Doolittle, and Janusz Korchak. The courage, integrity, focus, passion, and daring of each of these individuals presents us with patterns for living a successful life that O'Leary amplifies on in the second half of the book. Our success or failure at doing what God has called us to do is in our hands. He explains how the journey begins, how to overcome in the valley of idols, and how to ultimately fulfill God's destiny for your life.

The storytelling is superb, but the real meat of this book lies in O'Leary's analysis of what made these people's lives remain important to us often centuries later. It's inspiring reading that should help anyone desiring to make God's call on their life a reality.
