Customer Reviews:
Good Secondary Resource.......2003-12-23
This book should seriously be used ONLY with another text. A good one (in my opinion) is Griffiths. It goes into great depth (sometimes too much) conceptually and is very weak with the mathematics. Another reviewer said somethings about not giving many applications, and i agree. It gets the idea down, but no more than that. Griffiths along side this is awesome, and if you have time after those two, take a look at Shakars book; its a little harder mathematically, but if you hit those three together, youll prolly have a good idea of what QM is about. Feynman Lectures also help.
Point being: Dont use this book alone, very good otherwise.
Better than most.......2003-12-22
Although I would agree that this is probably the best book to begin your study of quantum mechanics with, there are still serious flaws with the book. I just finished taking a class that used this text and I found that a major problem is that it never actually 'get's to the point.' Instead of telling you how to apply a technique to solving problems, the text simply assumes that you'll be able to figure that out yourself. So much of the notation goes unexplained and important points go unemphasized. I would suggest using this book if you're a first time student of quantum mechanics but supplement it with another book that explains how to do problems (Liboff or Griffiths).
Great treatment of basic topics.......2003-05-02
Several of the other reviews here express my general, very positive feelings about this book, so I'll concentrate on two specific examples which illustrate the teaching emphasis of the book's authors.
Chapters 6 and 7 introduce quantum states with a brilliant discussion of Dirac's bracket notation using polarization of light as the driving example. The student at this level typically already knows what to expect when, for example, linearly polarized light passes through a linear analyzer oriented at an angle with respect to the polarization axis. The authors develop a set of projection amplitudes for linear and circular polarization which reproduce the results familiar to the student. This makes state vectors easy to understand and, in turn, it's much easier to learn and accept the less intuitive results which come from solving more complex problems later on. I would recommend this book for these two chapters alone.
In Chapter 9 the authors in just a few pages develop a simple but quantitative theory of alpha decay which is easy to follow and relates half-life (or decay constant) to alpha-particle energy with no adjustable parameters. They then compare their result to experiment and show agreement over 24 orders of magnitude of half-life. This example wonderfully illustrates the power of simple, clear reasoning to achieve a widely applicable result. Fantastic job!
I own three or four introductory quantum mechanics texts, but this is the one I turn to first.
Easy to read and really focuses on the Physics.......2002-11-27
OK, so this book is old, having been written in the 1970s. For all that, it still does the core things excellently: namely focus on the Physics, the experiments, the theory, AND the people behind the advances.
After going through the antecedents of the classical atomic model, the authors quickly move onto the wave-particle duality. They describe, throughout, groundbreaking experimental work of the likes of Thompson and Davisson & Germer. After setting the foundations, French and Taylor go to the discussion of the one dimensional Schrodinger equation, its physical meaning, and several examples of solutions by means of qualitative plots.
Photons and Quantum States, Angular momentum, Atomic Systems, a detailed discussion of the Hydrogen atom and Radiation from atoms make up the rest of the book.
What I particularly like about this book is that it is grounded in the Physics, with experiment and theory given an equal footing. The authors are gentle with their use of mathematics. The concept of operators is applied to the physical problem. This, despite what to some people would be the book's "old fashioned" nature, is refreshing. Too often, the authors of modern books on Quantum Physics "pose" with fancy mathematics to try to impress their colleagues or students.
This book is easy to read, there are plenty of worked examples and end of chapter exercises to keep the student busy. I recommend this book thoroughly.
Average.......2002-04-15
This book is pretty average. It doesn't generate much excitement about the subject, and it really doesn't give as much detail as it should. This book *should* be seen as an introduction to an introductory course in quantum mechanics. A better, albeit more expensive book, is the one by Gasiorowicz or Griffiths.

Product Description
Vol. 1 of Boerhaave's famous Institutes. A key text in the history of medicine. English translation, rebound, in great condition. One tear to page 167/8 (but nothing missing). No markings, water stain to outer edge only of pp. 39-63.
Book Description
Percolation theory deals with clustering, criticality, diffusion, fractals, phase transitions and disordered systems. It provides a quantitative model for understanding these phenomena, and therefore provides a theoretical, statistical background to many physical and natural science disciplines. This book explains the basic theory for the graduate while also reaching into the specialized fields of disordered systems and renormalization groups. Readers are expected to be able to handle some fundamental mathematical procedures, such as integration and differentiation of single variable functions, probability and statistics. Computer programming experience in Fortran is also useful. While percolation is treated as a fundamentally physical concept, its relevance to various natural and living systems is addressed. Much of the book deals with systems lying close to the critical point phase transition point, where the subject is at its most interesting and sensitive. This book should be of value to all those who deal with systems which exhibit critical points and phase transition behavior.
Customer Reviews:
Classic book.......2006-08-03
This is a classic book on percolation theory, which has excellent intuitive derivations. It gives a good introduction to the subject and also includes more advanced topics. It is ideal for graduate students and should be on every statistical mechanician's desk.

Customer Reviews:
Nice supplemental read...........2002-12-16
Any student of Solid State Physics should have Ashcroft & Mermin, or possibly Kittel, as their primary text, but I find Myers to be an excellent supplementary text. Solid State is a difficult subject, and it takes some time to understand the physical signficance of some of the abstract concepts. I read chapters 5 (lattice vibrations), 6 (free electron gas), 7 (periodic potential), and 11 (magnetism) to supplement Kittel and my Solid State class and found Myers approach to be very refreshing. Myers does an excellent job explaining difficult concepts in various appendices; such as exchange and correlation energies in the appendix on Exchange and Many Body Interactions. The supplemental appendices are at the ends of chapters, not the end of the text. Myers' approach is great for a materials scientist who must also be cognizant of periodic trends and the practical implications of solid state physics. When a subject such as the impact of a periodic potential on the electron wave function is presented, Myers understands that his readers are trying to understand the entire periodic table and not simply a few specific examples. Myers builds on the alkali metal atom models with discussions of how the periodic potential perturbs d-electrons or even f-electrons, or how the periodic potential is impacted by alloying. If you like to understand the concepts behind the equations, then Myers is a great text.

Verbose, unintelligable.......2001-12-10
I think the other reviewers are my classmates. I also found the book overly wordy, but meager with the derivations. The homework problems are often unclear. I found Kittel's text much clearer and straightforward and, surprisingly, more up-to-date.
Buy Kittel instead.......2001-11-22
I am taking a course in solid state right now and while I appreciate Myers being "the funniest solid state book," a self-claimed title, the book is nebulous, does not properly explain the fundamentals, and, even worse, is not self contained. When doing the homework assigned out of this book, many times, I have to look up other references to finish the problem.
Buy Kittel's instead - there is a reason why almost everyone uses his book.
Impenetrable.......2001-09-28
The author makes no attempt to emphasize key points over tangents. The text is very verbose and encourages the reader's mind to wander. Additionally, the problems don't really follow the material discussed. Calculations are often mysterious.

Piloting his 747, Rayford Steele is musing about his wife Irene's irritating religiosity and contemplating the charms of his "drop-dead gorgeous" flight attendant, Hattie. First Irene was into Amway, then Tupperware, and now it's the Rapture of the Saints--the scary last story in the Bible in which Christians are swept to heaven and unbelievers are left behind to endure the Antichrist's Tribulation. Steele believes he'll put the plane on autopilot and go visit Hattie. But Hattie's in a panic: some of the passengers have disappeared! The Rapture has happened, abruptly driverless cars are crashing all over, and the slick, sinister Romanian Nicolae Carpathia plans to use the UN to establish one world government and religion. Resembling "a young Robert Redford" and silver-tongued in nine languages, Carpathia is named People's "Sexiest Man Alive." (This reviewer, a former People writer, finds this plot twist plausible.) Meanwhile, Steele teams up with Buck Williams, a buck-the-system newshound, to form the Tribulation Force, an underground of left-behind penitents battling the Antichrist.
Ex-presidential candidate Pat Robertson briefly outsold Michael Crichton with his apocalypse novel The End of the Age (now available on audiocassette), and the similar The Third Millennium sells well, but the Left Behind series is the absolute champion in the race to make the Book of Revelation into racy thriller reading. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
Book 1 in the best-selling Left Behind series is available once again in mass paper. Customer Reviews:
excellent series.......2007-09-22
I have now read the whole series and loved it. The only suggestion I would make is to read his series that followed first. The story in the 2nd series actually preceeds the Left behind series.
Good on so many levels (forget the controversy)...........2007-09-21
I have heard a lot of debate of the theology behind the "Left Behind" series, but honestly unless it is causing someone to sin or turn away from the faith, then where is the problem? With that said, I would like to say that "Left Behind" is a very Biblically based book (regardless of when the Rapture occurs).
The story centers around two men. One a hot shot reporter named Cameron "Buck" Williams and the other an unsatisfied husband and pilot Rayford Steele. As the book opens we are introduced to these characters, they are both on the same airplane and both experience the immediate loss of the Rapture IN AIR!
The rest of the first book is an explanation and exploration of what it means to be a Christian, but it is action-packed and revolves around realistic characters such as Chloe Steele and Hattie Durham (although these characters are more developed through-out the series). The characters are put in tough circumstances, and are watching the events of ancient prophecies from the Bible unfold. There is a lot of talking, but one of the most gripping moments of the series is in the first book when Buck sees head on what Nicolae Carpathia is capable of and "remembers" it.
The thing about this series is that you cannot just read one book and then say you do not like it. Although, if you're anything like me, you will be hooked in the first book and wont be able to put down the series until the finish. It is well-written and well paced and tries to avoid too much fluff. I can't find anything Biblically wrong with these books, and I spent seven months studying Revelation as I read the "Left Behind" books.
If you are not a Christian, don't be put off by the Christian themes, they are prominent, but the series is as good as any series of this sort, if not better. It has a lot of blood, a lot of action, and a lot of people who doubt and don't believe in God. Anyway, just sit back relax and enjoy the first book in the series, you deserve it!
God Bless ~Amy
Just one more book in the all-encompassing, enthralling, and utterly absorbing Left Behind Series.......2007-09-14
From the very first letter of the alphabet that my eyes looked upon inside this series of books, until the very last period of the very last sentence, I was hooked. Each one of these books absorbed my attention like no other book has ever done in my life. Biblically sound, theatrically entertaining, and brilliantly written, the Left Behind books will inspire you to dig into God's word and take the pieces of news from your T.V. screen and match them right smack-dab up with the prophecies of the Bible. Your hair will stand up, your heart will race, and you will find yourself helplessly caught in the suspense. Once you finish one of these books, you will desperately race to your computer screen or your local library to pick up the next one!

A great gift........2007-09-07
I purchased this book as a gift. It was received in good shape and in a timely manner.
This is a good book...really.......2007-09-01
I was really surprised by the reviews on this book, I thought that it was a very good book when I first read it, and I'm about to read it again. I got "left behind" so to speak and now I want to read the series without interruption or having to wait for the next book to come out. I'm looking forward to it being as enjoyable as the first time I read it. It's fiction based on the Bible, so I think some may be judging too harshly. It's worth reading.
