Book Description
Volume 7 is a direct continuation of Volume 6, which documented the birth of the complementarity argument and its earliest elaborations. It covers the extension and refinement of the complementarity argument from 1933 until Bohrs' death in 1962. All Bohr's publications on the subject, together with selected manuscripts and extracts of his correspondence with friends and fellow pioneers such as Werner Heisenberg and Wolfgang Pauli, are included.
Divided into two, largely independent parts, the volume begins with Bohr's contributions to "Relativistic Quantum Theory". Together with Léon Rosenfeld, Bohr undertook a thorough investigation of the measuring problem in quantum electrodynamics and demonstrated the full accordance between the formalism and the result of idealized thought experiments.
The articles in the second part, although also restricted in scope to the field of physics, address a broader audience. One of the most impressive treatises is Bohr's own account of his debates with Albert Einstein, over more than twenty years, on the consistency, the completeness and the epistemological consequences of quantum mechanics.
Volumes 6 and 7 of the Collected Works are in turn related to the forthcoming Volume 10 which broadens the scope by presenting Bohr's applications of the complementarity argument beyond the domain of physics. Although each volume may be read independently, careful attention should be paid to the interrelationships between each volume in order to appreciate the subtlety of Bohr's continued elaboration and fine-tuning of his complementarity argument.

cozy mysteries and coffee.......2007-09-05
I wish that I could give 1/2 stars. The book isn't a four but it's not a three it's in between. It was a fast read but not predictable. I didn't figure it all out till the end when I read it. If you are a coffee drinker, you will like the references and recipes. The story line was decent enough to make me want to read the rest of the series
Coffe and murder -- don't mix.......2007-08-25
Clare Cosi left used to manage The Village Blend until she divorced the owner's son and moved to New Jersey with their daughter. Now she's back and a part owner, but she's about to find out that coffee isn't the only thing brewing at the coffee house...and she's walking on dangerous grounds.
The Village Blend, a coffeehouse in Greenwich, has been a part of the neighborhood for over a hundred years. Clare Cosi ran the Blend for Madame during her twenties until she divorced her husband, Madame's son, and moved to New Jersey to raise her daughter Joy. That is until Madame called and said she'd fired her manager, Moffat Flaste, who seemed to be single-handedly trying to destroy the Blend, and wants Clare to return.
Clare agrees to come back especially when Madame offers equity in the business and the use of the apartment over the Blend rent free. It seemed all was perfect until Clare finds her newly appointed assistant manager, Anabelle Hart, unconscious at the foot of the basement stairs. And with the police, Clare's ex-husband, Matteo Allegro, arrives to say he's also got the use of the apartment when he's in New York. Things look like they couldn't get worse until Matteo discovers the previous manager canceled the liability insurance and the police are undecided as to whether Anabelle fell or was pushed...
The police rule the fall an accident but Det. Mike Quinn agrees to keep it open for a while to check all avenues and give Clare a chance to find something that would make them believe it was murder. Clare and Quinn hit it off and Matteo is jealous. However, Matteo and Clare must work together to help find the truth behind Anabelle's fall and save the Blend from a law suit.
As a first book in a series the secondary characters get are more fleshed out since they will be appearing in future volumes. That makes for a lot of characters for a reader to keep track of. However, the large cast of characters also gives the coffeehouse more reality as a central feature of the environment and a community gathering spot. The Blend itself also serves as a character. Everyone at some point is connected to the Blend.
Coyle has also filled her writing with references to the history and use of coffee including some recipes in the back of the book. For those who enjoy not only a mystery but a chance to learn about a favorite beverage and a chance to try out new recipes at home -- this book is for you.

Elegant, Entertaining, & Extraordinary.......2007-08-19
The barista is found unconcious. We don't know if she had an accident or if someone deliberately pushed her. But Ms. Cosi, the manager of the Village Blend, is determined to find out.
The Village Blend is a cozy Coffee Shop. The lattes are divine. I love coffee, so I enjoyed the coffee facts. It is interesting to know where the coffee comes from, how it is dried, roasted, ground, and brewed.
While Ms. Cosi is investigating, we are led through some interesting adventures and wonderful lattes.
This is an elegant book, very well written.
Great coffee info, entertaining read.......2007-08-11
On What Grounds was a good mystery with an engaging heroine. I will definitely read the rest of the books in the series. The coffee information was great! For those who complained about too much coffee info: Hello! The heroine runs a high end coffee shop and the book is called On What Grounds. Duh!!!
My only criticism of this book is it reminds me of the very famous Goldy character created so well by Diane Mott Davidson. In On What Grounds, the heroine Clare is attracted to a cop. Diane Mott Davidson's Goldy is married to a cop. Clare has a cheating ex husband. Goldy did too. Clare's ex husband so far appears to be nicer than Goldy's Clare has a daughter. Goldy a son. Goldy is a caterer and provides recipes. Clare owns a coffee shop and provides recipes.
However, I still loved the book and will read the rest of the series.
Engaging Characters + Coffee Making Tips + Mysteries + Recipes.......2007-07-16
I am both a coffee lover AND a mystery lover, so I took a risk and bought On What Grounds sight unseen here at Amazon.com. In fact, I went ahead and ordered Through the Grinder, too!
Normally, I don't buy fiction sight unseen, but the combination of cozy mystery + coffee house was compelling. To be honest, though, I didn't have sky-high expectations for the series. I mean, it's just a paperback mystery, right? Likely to feature thinly-drawn characters, lame dialogue, and a see-through mystery--but good for some lazy summer escapism...
I can't tell how pleasantly surprised I am with On What Grounds! I just finished it a few moments ago, and thrilled that it's first in a whole series! (I'd be very disappointed if this were it...so I'm glad I have more to look forward to!) And, I'm usually NOT a fan of first person point of view books, but I got *completely* sucked into this book!
The main character is entirely believable, as are the rest of the characters. But perhaps what surprised me the most was the Cleo Coyle's strong "voice" and strong writing. Her prose is exquisite, and I'm telling you--I consumed a LOT of coffee while reading this book, probably in no small part to the author's admirable ability to describe the atmosphere (including coffee!) without the reader feeling like we're being "told", not "shown".
I can actually SEE The Village Blend of NYC in my mind's eye--the polished wooden floor, blueberry-colored marble counter, coral marble tables... In fact, I still see the opening of the book--so clear, it's as if I've seen this book in the form of a movie! It made me long for a coffee house in MY neighborhood...
Besides having strong characters and solid writing, On What Grounds is also a treat because coffee-making tips are woven throughout the book, and several recipes (mentioned in the book) are found at the end. For example, did you know that Macchiato means "stain"--as in "stain" (or "spot"/"speckle") with frothed milk? I've always ordered macchiato's from Starbucks, but now I have a greater appreciation for the finer elements to coffee and coffee brewing!
I read this book mostly as I was lounging outside, and I treasured every moment spent with On What Grounds. I truly got lost in this fantastic mystery and I look forward to spending MORE time with Clare Cosi and company with the second book!
By the way, the description here at Amazon.com says "Carolyn Cosi", as does the intro teaser to the actual book. I suspect that Cleo Coyle was going to call her character Carolyn, but then it was changed to Clare. (Clare works much better...so it was a good choice!)
If you're looking for a cozy mystery to while away the time, this is a worthwhile choice. If you're a coffee lover AND a mystery lover, your joy will be doubled as you savor the delicious writing of Cleo Coyle!

Hit the Ground Running - Duh!.......2001-08-01
There was hardly anything in this book that anyone with half a brain couldn't figure out after one or at the most, two, business trips - or even a vacation trip by air. I had been hoping for some real insight and there was very little.
An excellent book for business travelers..........1997-12-10
McCormack's latest offering on business travel is quite exceptional. While he is the head of his own firm, the book is well-written and contains many tips of use, even to the lowest business traveler on the corporate chain. I read it in about 5 hours (while flying). He explains concepts quite well, and offers practical advice, fitting for even the busiest of business travelers.
Book Description
Many observers interpret the recent wave of corporate scandals as support for the cynical view that self-interest trumps concerns for the greater good. Indeed, this interpretation finds comfort in the intellectual traditions of fields from mainstream economics to evolutionary biology. But is it valid?
In What Price the Moral High Ground?, economist and social critic Robert Frank challenges the notion that doing well is accomplished only at the expense of doing good. Frank explores exciting new work in economics, psychology, and biology to argue that honest individuals often succeed, even in highly competitive environments, because their commitment to principle makes them more attractive as trading partners.
Drawing on research he has conducted and published over the past decade, Frank challenges the familiar homo economicus stereotype by describing how people create bonds that sustain cooperation in one-shot prisoner's dilemmas. He goes on to describe how people often choose modestly paid positions in the public and nonprofit sectors over comparable, higher-paying jobs in the for-profit sector; how studying economics appears to inhibit cooperation; how social norms often deter opportunistic behavior; how a given charitable organization manages to appeal to donors with seemingly incompatible motives; how concerns about status and fairness affect salaries in organizations; and how socially responsible firms often prosper despite the higher costs associated with their business practices.
Frank's arguments have important implications for the conduct of leaders in private as well as public life. For, as he concludes, the better we understand personal motivation in competitive environments, the better we can structure organizations and public policies to promote our true ends.

Why I liked God's Ground Force -- a VERY helpful book........2006-05-17
I just finished Barbara Sullivan's new book God's Ground Force. My only criticism is that it should come with a warning "CAUTION: this book may challenge your faith!" ...because it will. If you're comfortable with your church as it is, don't buy this book, but if you're earnestly desiring to see you and your church turned into an effective vehicle that changes the face of society, read this book.
Barb continually mentions ministering to "the least of these". My own details aside, that hit me because I was once the least of these. She says in the introduction that we're not to wait for the "least of them" to come to us but that God calls us to go to them. The author uses military analogies to inspire the Church at large to do greater things on behalf of those who have been crushed by life's circumstances. And indeed it is a war of sorts. If you desire for you or your church to be on the tip of the spear in ministry, buy this book and read it twice. Spirit of God Fellowship's amazing success in turning the towns of South Holland and Harvey, Illinois on their heads, so to speak, can only be attributed to the church's leadership listening to God instead of to their own heart. It can also be credited to the individual members of the church volunteering their time, gifts and manpower, and in surrendering their own view of their church to the will of God. But above all, it shows how God can use one small but committed church. Ike said "Their's no limit to what man can accomplish if he doesn't care who gets the credit" and in this small church's case, they gave the credit to God.
I cannot find a single example of "we did this" or "I did this", etc., in this book. It is God-centered, not man-centered and that, I think, is one of the reasons why they have exceeded their wildest expectations in the area of needs-based ministry. One of their main ministries is a long-term Christian drug rehab ministry, which has had unusually good success in turning addicts and alcoholics from their addictions into clean productive members of their church and society. They also reach out to seniors, minorities and children. They also have a boxing club to reach out to kids tempted by the gang lifestyle. All this has been done by a small church that has been in existence for only a short time.
One thing that you will greatly appreciate is her practical suggestions on how to get to where God wants your church to be. These are presented at the end of each chapter. It's not a very long book so you can quickly absorb and apply their knowledge and experience to your own church's situation. It details many types of ministries so some part of their astonishing success can be applied to your church's situation.
Is the book worth reading? Absolutely, but be prepared to have your faith challenged. Be prepared to walk as the original Church did. Be prepared to leave your comfort zone. And be prepared to see your church, whatever its size, changed from a ho-hum church to a vibrant church that impacts its members and the community in which it resides.
I for one, have been reawakened to the need to minister to the least among us, as I once did.
Sincerely,
Guy Adams

Sherril Jaffe's memoir Ground Rules: What I Learned My Daughter's Fifteenth Year is a funny and horrifying memoir about a year in her life as mother to two rebellious teens: Rebekah, a 14-year-old torturing her parents by smoking, cutting school, and running away from home, and her younger sister Beanie. Jaffe and her husband, an orthodox rabbi, try everything to get control of Rebekah, from therapists and counselors (seven in one year) to threats of boarding school and disciplinary measures. Nothing works until Jaffe and her husband begin to undo the years of fear and distrust and start to accept Rebekah on her own terms. Jaffe's memoir is a disturbing, moving, and well-written reminder to readers about the delicacy of teenagers--and parents.
Customer Reviews:
Glad I didnýt have to wear her shoes.......2003-11-16
Imagine being married to the local San Francisco rabbi. Then imagine having the 15yo daughter from hell, complete with runaway episodes, truant behavior, the works. Sherril Jaffe had to deal with all of it, and she tells us the trials of her parenting efforts as she tries to understand, discipline, and help her older daughter thru the trials of adolescence while, at the same time, trying to hold the family together. And all of it is done under the eyes of her husband's congregation. Jaffe gets points for her honesty and humor.
Oy vey.
Did I read the same book?.......2001-08-01
....I am not so sure. Although my heart broke for this poor woman as I read about her children, I still wanted to shake her. I understand that sometimes we cannot control our children's actions, which this I do agree with the author. However, we can control how we react. When she ever told her daughter, "I feel awful when you call me a dumbass." I thought I would scream. Sounds like her problems started along time ago. Those girls took violin lessons, let me tell you, because they played her like a pro. Glad to hear all is now well for her. And lets talk about the father. He must have been the one to give the girls lessons. They all knew exactly what they wanted from the mother and they got it.
A wonderful book to read and re-read.......2001-03-19
Sherril Jaffe's poetic approach to the description of her daughters' teen years is engaging and charming. For anyone who has ever coped with a rebellious teenager, or who has known someone who has, this book will have the ring of truth. The author's ability to create short chapters, each of which not only describes an event in the life of their family, but also illuminates a larger truth, gives the reader much more to think about than the "plot" material would indicate. Perhaps this mother, or these parents, did not do everything right in raising their daughters, but there are few who do; the obvious care and love which underlie their actions are universal and give the reader the impression that, in the long run, things will turn out well. So often parents believe that they are the only ones going through hard times with their teens; this book, which I have lent to several parents whose teens seemed out-of-control at the moment, despite good parenting, makes one realize that a little humor goes a long way in raising children, and that the darkest times may not be completely bleak. This is a book that allows one to keep a sense of perspective on difficulties and the author must be commended for her ability to realize that everything changes, and so will family life and the behavior of children.
Wonderful book, bittersweet, reads like a good novel.......1999-04-20
Don't mistake this for a how-to book. It's much more... an intriguing memoir. Ground Rules reads like quality fiction. A big part of its appeal is the humor.
