Great Writing, But Lackluster Characters.......2007-09-22

The House on Mango Street tells the story of Esperanza, a Mexican-American girl growing up in a "ghetto" area of Chicago.

But instead of being your typical novel, this book is a collection of vignettes, each focusing on one specific character or event, with few of them mentioned in future chapters. And instead of being in a typical prose style, the book is more of a combination of standard writing and poetry together.

With the way the book is written, we are allowed a very intimate contact with Esperanza's mind. Sandra Cisneros blends that with a skillful use of metaphors to create a very detailed and personal world.

But that's pretty much what I like about it.

On the other hand though, I was very disappointed with who was telling the story - Esperanza. Despite the writing, I didn't really care for her that much.

Even worse was the Esperanza got very whiny towards the end of the book. For some reason I can't fathom, she simply decides to hate her house, insisting that it isn't her home. But even before that, Esperanza continually self-pities herself for a variety of things, falling into a boring humdrum of angsty teenage melorama. And then we have the (vaguely described) rape scene.

I didn't find the other characters very rememberable, either. Most of them just them were one shot characters who wouldn't affect the story at all if they were removed.

In conclusion, I think this is a good book to read, but not really that great as everyone else says it is. (It's a good thing that it's short.)

Horrible.......2007-09-07

This book is most overrated. Yes it is a great remark on culture and growing up Latino, but ignorance of simple writing styles and grammar is no excuse. Not to mention that the book is not even remotely interesting. The main character is confusing, rambles on, and Cisneros always tries to draw pity for her. This is the worst book I have ever read.

a classic young adult novel.......2007-09-03

I first encountered this book while scoring tests for an educational testing company... the first chapter was used as a prompt for a reading test. The kids saw the author's Hispanic name and jumped to the obvious conclusions... that the family is desperately poor and oppressed (and also many kids concluded that the family lived in the Southwest or even in Mexico, whereas Mango Street is in fact a real street on the North Side of Chicago.)

This is in fact very much a structured novel, even though it is written in an episodic and impressionistic manner: it is a classic coming of age story. The family is certainly not wealthy, and they go through crises like any other family --- but this is actually a fairly happy and average American family.

After reading the positive reviews on this book, I was disappointed. I found the book boring and a waste of my time.

I liked it.......2007-08-22

I had to read this in my English Composition class and I thought it was very good and interesting. The characteres and story are both well-told. Cisneros is a good writer and she doesn't bore the reader to tears like cough cough John Steinbeck cough. This was the first book by Cisneros that I read and I am interested in her other works. Hopefully they will be as good as hers.

Sandra's mom said she [the mom] was a smart cookie, but she meant it sarcastically, referring to her decision to leave school and get married young. An experienced teacher can always use this book in the classroom.

Stretch your imagination.......2002-12-04

I thought The House on Mango Street was a an interesting book. It shows character that not many authors use. Sandra Cisneros used a different way to express the feelings in her book. She used a series of short stories called vignettes. The vignettes may be hard at times to remember, but they are a quick read. Cisneros's style of writing is simple, so it is easy to comprehend. Seeing life from a child's point of view is a great way to expand anyone's imagination.

Fluffy lesson plan sequence.......2002-10-22

I thought this unit plan was going to be more substantial but it did not meet any subject matter standards. The goals and objectives were shallow and not based on any concrete skills. It seems that the whole lesson plan was focused on getting a student to read the story and understand it but there were no skills emphasized. The goals say things like: to read, to appreciate, to understand. (nothing is measureable or concrete!)

The questions were shallow and the activities were not worth the money I paid for. What a waste of money!!

If you teach in California don't waste your money. Nothing here meets our Language arts teaching standards.

The House on Mango Street.......2002-02-22

Well I thought the novel was good, and I really enjoyed reading it. I liked the part where she talks about their hair and how she described them like you could smell it. I thought it was good because it's kind of like the real life style people have, or are in. It makes the reader realize what some kids have to go through. Well I have an uncle and his family that are like that. I would recommend the book to others so they could read it and know that is/are peoples lifestyles, and they could realize what they are going through and help them out.

Now I will be able to use it in my Spanish classes! as you know, the novel is wonderful, and the translation and reading are excellent. I am glad it was available. I recommend reading this book in English. Because the author uses some Spanish or Spanglish in the original version, the Spanish translation is hard to understand at times.

Es uno de esos libros que me causaban una sensacion en el estomago que solo se siente cuando miras al amor de tu vida o cuando sabes que es tu ultimo minuto en este mundo. Pero en mi caso la sensacion era porque sabia que tenia que ir a mi clase de ingles y leer este libro que mas odiaba en el mundo. El lenguague que usaba era muy simple y en la forma que ella escribe es como para darle un sentido a los anglosajones de como es la vida de una latina en Nueva York. Lo lei, en ingles y otros amigos tambien tuvieron que pasar por este calvario. Todos los anglosajones les parecia que era un buen libro pero para la mayoria de los latinos de la clase ese libro era el peor y el que mas odiabamos.

The book, House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros is an interesting book. I really do not understand why on some of the critiques people say they did not understand the book. I think it is very meaningful book. If you pay attention to it, there are many messages that Sandra Cisneros wrote on her book. I like this book very much because there are some stories that relate to my life, and I understand the concept of what she is talking about on her book. If there is, one thing that I did not like was that the book has many characters that I have to keep up.
