Customer Reviews:
Elements of Photonics.......2003-02-09
In sixteen chapters in two volumes, "Elements of Photonics" by Keigo
Iizuka exhibits his passion for teaching the facts about light, the
devices with which one controls it, and the mathematics by which to
express its behavior. The book has careful definitions and step by
step explanations beautifully illustrated. It builds its mathematical
parts on a basic knowledge of Maxwell's equations and the Fourier
transform which the reader is assumed to possess; however, the
mathematical exposition never loses touch with the laboratory, and
explanations in terms of basic geometry are offered side by side with
the more mathematical exposition.
A great strength of the book is the definition of terms one finds
in the photonics literature. Another is that many topics
are presented from both a simple geometric point of view and
a more mathematical point of view, so the reader can choose
how to learn. A third is the wealth of superb drawings and diagrams.
The author's preface gives a helpful orientation and the index is
complete and well organized as an aid to using the book as a reference
book.
When I tried using the book to learn about lithium niobate phase
shifters I found the explanation so good that I started using
"Elements of Photonics" as the first place to resolve the
many mysteries that I encounter in working my way into photonics.
So far it has exceeded my expectations on three out four other topics
that I tried. While the field of photonics offers quantum effects and
complex interferometers omitted in this book, for a foundation in
photonics "Elements of Photonics" is head and shoulders the best
available.
The chapters are in volume I are:
Fourier Optics: concepts and applications.
Boundaries, near-field optics, and near-field imaging.
Fabry-Perot resonators, beams, and radiation pressure,
Propagation of light in anisotropic crystals
Optical properties of crystals under various external fields
Polarization of light
How to construct and use the Poincare sphere
Phase conjugate optics
Volume II contains:
Planar optical guides for integrated optics
Optical waveguides and devices for integrated optics
Modes and dispersion in optical fibers
Detecting light
Optical amplifiers
Transmitters
Stationary and solitary solutions in a nonlinear medium
Communicating by fiber optics;
In addition, there are three appendices:
PIN photodiode on an atomic scale
Mode density
Perturbation theory

Great Tasting Soul Food Without All The Fat.......2007-08-07
Great book for anyone who wants a book comfort food cookbook with all the taste but without all the fat and sugar this is for you. I am a diabetic of 10 years and this is the first book that works for me and I don't feel like I'm missing anything. I ran it by my doctor and dietician and got the thumbs up. I've given this book to two people already as gifts and they love it.
Book Description
The evil Lords of Zhev'Na kept Gerick captive for months. Although his parents rescued him, he remains tormented by his experience-and mistrusted even by those who love him. Accused of treason, Gerick flees and takes refuge in a magical realm full of outcasts, where he will discover how to use his own magical talent-soul weaving-to save his people from Zhev'Na.
Customer Reviews:
Starts slow but worth every minute!.......2007-06-12
I have to disagree with a lot of the other reviewers. Did this book start out slower than the rest? Yes. Of course, it had a lot to explain to the reader. But, I can definitely say that this has been my favorite of the series so far. The last half of the book is so worth the ride. And, I understood why the beginning was slower than the previous two... it made the ending pack one huge wallop of emotion. Loved it! Can't wait to read the next one!
Enjoyable, well thought out. Some reviewers just didn't "get" it........2007-03-23
I don't understand what some reviewers wrote. The betrayer at the end certainly WAS featured throughout the book. The Bounded world was integral. The Source was clearly explained. And, while none of this was hinted at in previous books, neither did this plot contradict them.
I very much enjoyed spending time with Gereck as he discovered himself. I missed the loving, caring, thoughtful Karon, and so had a hard time reading those portions, but I felt it all added to the story, rather than detracted.
I almost didn't read this book because of some of the reviews, but, I'm glad I did.
Enjoyable.......2006-09-01
Now I did give it a three star because overall it is predictable and drags a bit here and there. It kept my interest enough for me to continue on to book four. Hope it gets better though.
Some of my favorite characters were the Dread Lords of Zhev'na. not sure why, maybe because they were so interesting.
A Thoughtful Sword and Sorcery Coming of Age Story.......2006-05-30
In The Soul Weaver, author Carol Berg focuses her attention on the internal conflicts that motivate the lead male characters Karon/D'Natheil, Prince of Avonar and his son and heir, Gerick of Comigar. Seriana, Gerick's mother, a strong powerful woman whose love for her sorcerer husband Karon survived his death and resurrection unfortunately spends much of this novel on the sidelines. There is a new young female protagonist, Roxanne, Crown Princess of Leire, who having survived the obligatory kidnapping of royal women in a fantasy novel, proves herself to be a sturdy supporting character.
Karon/D'Natheil and Gerick are the keys to this tale. What makes this novel intriguing is the energy the plot takes from a simple question: how does a sensitive gifted leader choose between the good and the evil uses of his talents. For Karon/D'Nathiel, the challenge is how to maintain his deepest soul-nature as a Healer while living the role of the heroic warrior Prince. For Gerick, now at the age where his true magical gift has started to emerge, the test is how to protect others from dangerous incidents that ominously suggest that the boy who is also Dieste the Destroyer remains linked to his immortal enemies, the evil Lords of Zha'Nev.
The Soul Weaver is a puzzle story where the most crucial tests of the father and son protagonists concerns how they and their ideals can survive a dangerous, literally soul-stealing war. This is a thoughtful and thought-provoking novel that should become fantasy classic and which will definitely provoke its share of serious late night discussions.
I thought it was pretty good.......2006-02-18
This is not a review so much as my opinion of the book.
I've tried to figure out other reviews on this book. In fact, with their bump in the road; weakest; so unlike Berg rhetoric, they almost kept me from reading it. I'm glad they didn't. If you exclude the last few chapters of Daughter of Ancients, this is easily my favorite book of the four. Primarily because this book is rarely plagued with the "quantum leaps of intuition after being dumb for chapter after chapter" of the first two books. I can't tell you how frustrating a literary tool that is. I really enjoyed Gerick's coming of age in the Bounded. The conclusion was consistent with the characters and the character of the books. What son wouldn't find strength from a father's "I will fight them until the last day of the world to set you free" or a mother's "You were beloved from the day your father and I knew of you?" It was a pure joy to see Gerick, Seri (the queen of the quantum leaps), Karon, and especially Paulo (who'll go down as one of my favorite characters ever) finish this journey.
If you've been scared off because of the reviews, I encourage you to read this book. It's well worth it.

Milton Rogovin: The Forgotten Ones
ASIN: 1893996255 |
Book Description
Milton Rogovin traveled to Cuba twice in the mid-1980s to photograph those he calls "the forgotten ones." He encountered renowned poet Nancy Morejon, who, upon seeing his images, decided to write new poems and select poems from her work that resonated with the photographs. The result is a spectacular collaboration between poet and artist that creates a multi-dimensional portrait of the landscape and people of a place that has been all but invisible to us since the embargo of Cuba more than 40 years ago. Translators Pamela Carmell and David Frye retain the voice and feel of the original poems.
Nancy Morejon is one of Cuba's most important contemporary poets.
Milton Rogovin is a world-renowned documentary photographer with works in many major collections.

Book Description
This book is a description of how life could be viewed and lived if we knew the true extent of our reality, i.e. WE ARE NOT HUMAN BEINGS! WE ARE SOULS! I have found that through accessing my non-dominant hand and contacting the creative side of my brain that I am able to come up with the wisdom you will find throughout this book. You will also get in on the fun, by being able to access the wisdom of your own soul also. Exercises are strategically placed throughout the book in applicable sections. As souls, we have all the answers needed to live this one human life. The answers are not outside of ourselves. We can stop searching there and get to the place where the answer is - within our own souls. This is for everybody! There are no limits here. If you choose to believe you are human, that will be a limit that keeps this secret locked inside your soul. If, on the other hand, you are able to risk going beyond the beliefs of thousands of years of human history, you will find the very beautiful and simple wisdom of your soul connecting you right though to your Creator.
The words, "The breath of life" come from a Biblical verse in Gen. 2:7 where it says, "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul." The key to accessing our human soul is through this "breath of life". It is as simple as being able to breathe like we breathed our first breath. You see, that first breath wasn't the beginning of my soul! This birth experience was just the beginning of my soul living inside this particular human body! If I can learn how to breathe the divine baby breath that is the beginning of me "seeing again" through my soul's eyes.
I have discovered through using my non dominant hand, all that you will read in this book. The book is written when receiving wisdom from this side of the brain. Using the non dominant hand connects us to the creative side of our brain. I feel that this part of our brain is a direct mirror of the wisdom of God that flows through our souls to our brain. Connecting to this creativity through the divine baby breath is a power that will change your course in life. Instead of trying to make things happen and having to wait a very long time for them, when you work with the power of your own soul, you will "let things happen" and they manifest immediately! The creative force for all things is "letting". The non creative force we humans use of trying to make things happen, is weak, in comparison.
Give yourself the gift of being able to discover your own soul through reading this book. "Let yourself in" on this secret that you have known all along! Yes! You, my dear, are a beautiful creation of God, meant to live here on the earth inside a human body, for the purpose of exploring and discovering the infinite depth of your "living soul". Then, an added benefit is to share the joy of this discovery with other explorers. This is an absolute Utopia!
Larry

Book Description
Meet the hardest working man in soul food. The world got a taste of home-style chef and philosopher Weaver D when his motto "Automatic for the People" was used by hometown band R.E.M. as the title for their bestselling album. But his own loyal fans know that being Automatic-keeping on with the keep-on in good times and bad, and knowing that life, like food, is always better with a few generous shots of hot sauce-is really Weaver D's down-to-earth recipe for business success and personal happiness. His pragmatic philosophy is as soul-satisfying as a double serving of his Three Cheese Mac 'n' Cheese. Includes 50 of his long-sought-after soul food recipes.

disappointed south ga. girl.......2005-01-31
if you are looking for that good down home cooking? , then don't waste your time or money on this book., i have tried several recipes in this book., needless to say, i have wasted a lot of time and money preparing the food., what a disappointment! i am a south ga, country girl., and i know good food., and this is not it!., i used the very best meats and vegetables, and still no good!., his recipes are lacking ingredients? i am glad i tested the recipes, before the super bowl party!
Funny, unique voice.......2000-03-20
This is a great book by a soul-food master. There were two parts which were so funny that I literally dropped the book out of my hand, but there are other passages, like the one in which little Weaver adds too much salt to the canned peas he is making for his bed-ridden grandma, that had me bawling! If you've ever been to R.E.M.-country (Athens, GA) and had Weaver's great food, you'll love his easy-to-follow home-style recipes that are in the back of the book after his memoir. I've made his Three Cheese Mac N' Cheese two times already and I'm not particularly a whiz in the kitchen. Just by coincidence, this is the third Hill Street Press book I've ordered--they are a cool, little publishing company based in Weaver's hometown.
Way to go Weaver!.......2000-03-20
I heard Weaver on Weekend Edition Saturday with Scott Simon. Though I haven't seen him in years and moved from Athens a long time ago, I will carry to my grave my fond memories of Weaver D and his smiling face (and good food). Read this book! It's the real deal!
Fantastic Book From a Fantastic Person.......1999-11-02
Dexter Weaver is the most down to earth person around...and it really comes through in his book. Everything, from his views on life to the recipes in the back are GREAT. If you want to read an uplifting story about life and how to live it, read this book.
ps. His food is mighty fine too.
