Book Description
A rich compilation of work by some of the most inventive minds in the field of digital design.
John Maeda, probably the most important digital designer, educator, and artist working today, created a sensation with maeda@media (2000), which documented his complete oeuvre and laid out his belief in the importance of designers understanding the computer as a medium, not just a tool.
Maeda's work as an educator and director of the Aesthetics + Computation Group (ACG) at the MIT Media Lab has largely remained behind the scenes. For seven years, Maeda and his studentsseveral of whom are already internationally celebratedhave created some of the most digitally sophisticated and exciting pieces of design to emerge anywhere. Little of this research has been seen outside the laboratory.
This book presents the most fascinating work produced by the group, arranged into themes that apply to today's design issues: information visualization, digital typography, abstraction, interaction design, and education. Each section also features brief essays by leading names in the field of interaction and digital designCasey Reas, David Small, Yogo Nakamura, Joshua Davis, and Gillian Crampton-Smith.
Deftly bridging the chasm between art and science, John Maeda, a true pioneer in the digital realm, leads the way to a greater understanding and richness of experience. Over 600 illustrations, most in color.

Carefully designed book, wish it had more information.......2007-04-03
The book is carefully, beautifully designed, it really shines in your bookshelf. Nevertheless, i found it to be lacking more thoughts, ideas - something to fill the void, to make the images meaningful. It fails to inspire, to make you ask questions, to expose the deeper structures and ideas behind the artwork. That's a big "sin" so to say, since maeda is well known for having interesting things to say.
Without real text i think it's just a beautiful book, no more and no less than that. Great for snobs, or for having in your living room...
powerfull secret message.......2006-11-19
I read 7 times in a row this book to analyse it in depth. It is fun and very exciting to read as you go through dozen of highly interesting projects. My analysis of this book brought me to the conclusion that it also contains a vision, a powerfull secret message. It convinced me we are builders of a new era, a "renaissance" of human knowledge and activities with computational technologies.
Within a friendly package, i got intimately convinced by the faithfull project of John Maeda, and I'm now driving my research having in mind the many accessible yet visionary projects i have seen in this book. I'm applying to MIT Media Lab and i want to change the world, with my vision.
New Masters of Maeda.......2004-10-23
Maeda is a certifiable genius, but his books have gone downhill since his first, "Design by Numbers." That book is an exceptional introduction to computational design, original, and elegant. His next, "Maeda at Media" took many hundreds of pages to sum up Maeda's years a the MIT Media Lab. It was something of an egotistical embarrassment. Maeda, then just in his mid-thirties, included pretty much every experiement and project he'd done to date. Even geniuses need editors.
Now, in "Creative Code" we get a book not really different from the "New Masters of Flash" series that's now in (I think) its third edition. CC is a collection of case studies of work by some very smart people, and some essays about digital media, working methods, and so on. Much of it is great work and pretty. It's rendered pretty lifeless in a printed book, of course, so you'll want to track down this work online to actually check it out.
How valuable will this be to you? Do you need another heavy, sexy design book? If you're really interested in this kind of work, you'll certainly already know about all of these designers, and probably about most of the peices included here. You've probably also read the designers' own blogs or web sites, so you'll know about their methods and interests in much more detail than you get here. (The description's statement that "little of this research has been seen outside the laboratory" is not true.) In that case, you get a book of pretty pictures that probably will sit on your shelf more than on your lap. If you're looking for code samples or detailed technical explanations, you'll be better off looking elsewhere.
It's kind of a shame in the end. He's so talented, I want to see Maeda doing less surveying of the state of interaction design and more genuinely innovative and interesting things. In fact, I'll tell you what's needed: to finish the project he started in DBN, which is to really explain the concept of "coding elegance" (and the creativity behind it). There's a lot in all three books about the aesthetic appeal of well-written computer code, but there's not much about what specifically makes one algorithm more beautiful than another. This algorithmic elegance is really central to Maeda's work; he says that digital designers should appreciate both the coding and the visual/interactive design natures of the medium. The people represented in this book are the ones who'll be able to do that, but it hasn't happened yet.
Book Description
From the Oxus trout of eastern Afghanistan to the small golden brown trout of British chalk streams, James Prosek has dedicated his unique painting talent to bringing to life trout from around the world, several of which are the few remaining of their type. Prosek has a passion for trout and conveys their beauty with the stroke of his brush in this collection of nearly 100 gorgeous watercolors.
The text provides a historical profile of each fish along with personal reflections by the author. Prosek savors the beauty of various fishing spots, along with the fate of the species, contemplating man's role in the extinction of animals. Both sensitive and informative, Trout of the World is a must for the library of the recreational fisherman as well as the ichthyologist.

A must own for anyone who loves fly fishing.......2004-01-26
I have been a fly fisherman (Yes I am female and also not politically correct) since I was around age 8 and after pestering my Dad for days to teach me how to cast a line he relented and a great journey began. As well as a library on the subject of fly fishing, tying flies and trout art. Which is why I am in awe of James Prosek's writing, art and passion for fishing.
This and his Trout : An Illustrated History are a must own for anyone who loves fly fishing, painting trout or simply sitting mesmerized watching trout in their back yard creek like we do or from a bridge in rural areas of the states and world.
I recommend ALL the books this young talented and knowledgeable author has written.
The trout encyclopedia has arrived!.......2003-11-11
I was not a big fan of James Prosek's first book. Next to the hyper-realism of Tomelleri, these water color illustrations did not work. Also, several were drawn from photos and were not morphologically (especially morphometrically) correct. So what? some may say.
Everything changed when I picked up a copy of Trout of the World. The style has changed just enough to make a huge difference. Sure, some of the paintings still look like he was in a hurry to meet a deadline but on the whole, I loved it. This is what we Americans (and Canadians) needed. There are other "cool" salmonids besides the stuff we are used to. Again, photos from books such as Freshwater fishes of Japan have been used as source material but I don't care. Great lateral views of some amazing fish!
James Prosek has found the right balance of color, detail and morphological information. The overall design of the book is also lovely. The lenok and taimen pictures are priceless as are the weird browns from places you would think, well...shouldn't have browns.
I think he used my Russian longfin charr as a source for his illustration. Looks very similar to the one I did some years back in pen & ink. Anyway, all fish lovers, wildlife painters and fisherman will adore this book. ANd don't just look at the pictures, read it!
Well done Mr. Prosek. I'm mad about trout, again....
Update, October 2004
The text that accompanies each illustration is fantastic. The author meets with experts of most species featured in the book. Some are academics, while others are just, well...ordinary folks who have an obsession with a certain morph, form or species of trout. The varied personalities and the strange places the author visits in quest of these wierd trout make this an unforgettable volume.

Anglers who wish to learn the nuances of trolling, who want to troll for species they may have not sought previously, or who want to improve their trolling effectiveness will benefit from the information to be found in this new edition.

A MUST read!!!!!.......2005-09-13
Very,Very, informative book!!!! Highly recommended!!! The Best book I have read on trolling A to Zs to date!
Gettin' Down Fishing.......2005-03-21
A great book on trolling, with lots of information about downriggers. The author also covers the importance of boat speed, temperature, sonar, and more. You can learn much from the author on catching a wide range of species including striped bass, black bass, muskie, walleye, salmon, and trout. If you troll, or would like to learn about it, get this book.
Another excellent book on trolling is "Trolling Top to Bottom." These two books form an excellent foundation for anyone wanting to catch fish using this enjoyable and productive method. Once you get into trolling, you will also want a copy of "Precision Trolling," an encyclopedia of crankbaits that tells you how deep each bait will go given the length of line out. Tight lines!

Essential reading for the curious and creative fly tyer.

Delightful and enlightening.......2006-09-25
I learned fly fishing and fly tying using my grandfather's books and gear back in the '70s, so I was already a little behind the times at the very point I started, but I've always enjoyed the sense of connection to past traditions that was inherent then. Somewhere along the way, I fell out of fly fishing for a decade or two, and when I returned, nothing was familiar anymore. Graphite rods, fluorocarbon leaders, tying materials I'd never heard of, reels that look (and cost) like alloy rims from a Ferrari . . . the disconnect was amazing, not only from the familiar but seemingly from the history as well. I retreated to my grandfather's bamboo rod and silk line spooled on an old Heddon Imperial or pre-war Pflueger Medalist.
This book is a wonderful antidote. If you've ever pondered how a fly might have been tied and evolved from the fifteenth through nineteenth centuries, about the materials that went into line and leader, about wooden rods and antique fish hooks, if you've ever actually wanted to try making any of these items yourself and fishing with them, then you'll love this book. I often enjoy trying things "the old way" even if I don't intend to make it my constant practice. It's important with history, though, not to get stuck there, and this book is not just a throw-back, as Martin ties the past in with the present, letting the experiences of history inform his personal modern fly patterns. His well researched explorations of ancient angling literature is pulling me backward several hundred years from the mid-twentieth century, and helping me a bit to deal with the twenty-first. (And, oddly enough, makes my silk line and cane rod seem so modern! I never knew just how much history had gone before.)
I'm sure it's a significant percentage of fly fishers that tie their own flies. For those fly fishers with a strong sense of history and tradition that enjoy using their hands to craft their own tools to pursue their sport and wish to take it further and down an antique road, and even for those interested in the history of fly fishing with no intent to make anything at all, this book will prove eye-opening. I'm only part-way through my copy now, but I know this volume will take its place on my bookshelf next to books by Izaak Walton, Ray Bergman, Joe Bates, William Blades, Milford "Stanley" Poltroon, and the others I've valued over the years. I'm equally sure I'm going to try my hand at bending and tempering some of my own fish hooks before long, as well. Maybe I'll even build a wooden loop rod or a furled horsehair line. Darrel Martin put a lot of care into creating this book, and he gets my thanks.

An excellent "pocket" manual.......2000-03-25
Almost thirty years ago I read the original "Streamside Guide" and used it continuously while learning the basics of fly fishing for trout in Upstate New York. Now at 43 I have re-read "Art Flicks New Streamside Guide" and I plan to carry it while fishing for quick references and identifications of newly hatched flies. I am hoping that my 13 year old son will also read this most imformative guide to the sport of fly fishing.
Book Description
A beautiful and comprehensive manual carefully detailing for you how to tie 160 flies—listed in order from simple to complex
In Mastering the Art of Fly Tying, one of the world’s most experienced fly-tying instructors reveals that the real secret to fly tying is not learning to tie each fly individually, but mastering and building upon the necessary skills and techniques. The 160 flies in this stunningly photographed guide are organized from simple to complex, rather than by type of fly as in other books. Each new fly teaches you another technique and builds your skill and confidence, along with an exceptional collection of flies.

good basic information.......2006-08-31
The book was filled with good basic information presented in a concise format. The pictures and diagrams are very helpful in learning the concepts of how, when and where and explaining them to younger children.
Great Book for the Beginner.......2002-11-19
This is a wonderful book for either the beginner. You will learn how to fish, what to fish for and what tackle you will need to take along. It does not go into any great depth on any topic but this is not what the book is designed for. It is an introductory text and a solid overview. A bonus is the beautiful photography!

Great for beginners and for those needing a refresher course.......2000-08-10
I found the book to be informative enough for both beginner and intermediate fisherman (and women). With both picture and text representations to easily figure out basic concepts as well as tried and true methods for fishing.
Great introduction for a rookie!.......1999-12-01
I picked this one up a few summers ago since I didn't have much genuine fishing experience at all. This book helped me get up to speed on all facets of freshwater fishing and the knowledge I've gained through it has provided a great deal of enjoyment out on the water since then.

Great Reference!.......2007-02-18
The lay out of this book is great. The chapters are broken down to demonstrate the different ways to tie different portions of the fly. For example, the different methods for tying on the hackle are given as well as different wing styles. The pictures help to clarify what each step entails. I find myself going back to this book numerous times and it is one of the most used books on my shelf.
Greatest Fly Tying Book.......2001-06-21
I have 4 tying books and have been interested in tying for years but as soon as I recieved this book I became addicted.I also have the CD-Rom of the same title and both are more helpful than any information I have gotten anywhere else.If you want to help someone start tying flies or already know how and just want to get better this is a must buy.The CD-Rom also has movies on every technique you would ever possibly need. Buy this book!!!!!
Fly Tying Cookbook.......2000-10-03
This book is great to see step by step how to tie flies. The pictures are well done. It is easy to see what is going on at each step. You can even determine lengths of materials from measuring against hook length. The book leaves very little to guessing. What you guess is really more of a show of creativity and style.
The best way to understand what fishes think before lunch.........1998-11-19
This is the second book on fly-tying I've read; all the things shown inside are really clear and also a child could tye a catching fly following the illustrations and the photos. Congratulations!
A Very Beautiful Book.......1998-09-11
In The Art of Fly Tying, fly fishermen find many ways to tie high-quality, well-crafted classical flies, and most popular fly patterns. The book itself is a work of art. All color pages full of beautifull photographs.
Book Description
With over 500 color photographs, this thorough text introduces the reader to the wide variety of decoys currently available, decoys made earlier in the century by "old time" artists as well as examples of contemporary design. The construction and special attributes of fishing decoys are discussed in detail, information vital to recognising the most collectible decoys. Detailed histories of early twentieth century and contemporary decoy makers of Minnesota and their decoys has been compiled through personal interviews with the makers or their families. Information is also provided on spear makers and the varying designs of their spears, jigging sticks, and decoy boxes. This is a truly valuable reference work.
