    Book Description

Contributed by world-renowned specialists on the occasion of Paul Germain's 80th birthday, this unique book reflects the foundational works and the intellectual influence of this author. It presents the realm of modern thermomechanics with its extraordinary wealth of applications to the behaviour of materials, whether solid or fluid. The thirty-one contributions follow an easygoing autobiographical sketch by Paul Germain, and highlight the power and richness of a methodological approach to the phenomenology of many materials. This approach combines harmoniously thermodynamics and continuum theory in order to provide exploitable, thermodynamically admissible models of a large variety of behaviours and phenomena, including those of diffusion, thermoelasticity, viscoplasticity, relaxation, hysteresis, wetting, shape-memory effects, growth, phase transitions, stability, fracture, shocks, machining of materials, microstructured solids, complex fluids, etc. Especially aimed at graduate students, researchers, and engineers in mechanical engineering and materials science, this book also presents the state of the art in an active field of research and opens new horizons in other scientific fields, such as applied mathematics and applied physics, because of the intellectual satisfaction and remarkable efficiency provided by the advocated approach.

5 out of 5 stars fun book; not for every child.......2007-09-28

    1) I loved this book when I was a child. I recommend it because it has the ability to communicate a slice of Chinese culture in a fun way.

    2) After reading the reviews posted by others, I agree the intense themes should only be exposed to kids who can absorb them. This "intensity", however, is no different from a Grimms Fairy Tale.

    3) As for those offended, I am unhappy this was your experience. However, as I understand it, this story is based on a Chinese story, not some Eurocentric plot to minimize Asians. Complaining about the "ethnicity" would be similar to accusing Asian bookmakers of Caucasian slurs for books featuring rustic cowboys, or "Mean White Stepmothers".

    4) I do not deny the discomfort of those who were mocked due to race. Your injustice, however, was only exposed by the reading of a book with Asian elements; not created from it. I suggest this book, as any book of Asian lore, will always pose the risk of exposing latent bigotry and be used as an insult. (i.e. Nuwa, ShanHaiJing narratives, etc.) This does not mean our children (or ourselves) should not be exposed to such stories; but rather parents have a responsibility in affirming other persons intrinsic value.

    5) Personally, I distinctly (and warmly) remember, after reading it, having the feeling that China was interesting and/or had interesting stories to tell. It fed my general interests in the Chinese culture. It never needed to require the interpretation that Asians were somehow beneath me. That interpretation has to come from elsewhere, and THAT is the problem.

1 out of 5 stars Liking it Doesn't Mean that You Should Use it in Your Classroom.......2007-07-23

I agree that texts should be judged according to the time they were created. People may continue to love this book as a book from their childhood.

Nevertheless, it is irresponsible to use this book as an example of Chinese culture and literature in today's schools. One glance at the illustrations lets you know that charactures of Chinese people are portrayed, showing the most racist of stereotypes (well beyond the stereotype of "they all look alike" although the audience for the execution seems to be peopled with men who look just like the 5 Chinese brothers). Also see for example, the bright yellow used for the flesh tone (indeed the only color used in the book). Or the drawing of the executioner. Or the mother (who is identical to the brothers, but with a different hairdo).

I would recommend the following articles for teachers looking to select authentic Chinese and Chinese American literature (as well as Japanese and Japanese American and Korean and Korean American literature):

5 out of 5 stars As good as it was as a kid!!!!.......2007-05-13

This is a clever imaginative book. It was a great flashback to reread it again and a fun gift.

5 out of 5 stars Not only is this a classic... It's a TIMELESS Classic.......2007-03-24

This story truly spans generations. It truly is timely and TIMELESS. I enjoyed it as a child and gave it to my son who enjoyed it just as much as I did, if not more. He's nine now and still reads it just as often as he did when I first gave it to him. Only now he can read it by himself.

The story of the five chinese brothers and their "powers" or "abilities" inspired me to get past my own uniqueness. (I was born with spina bifida). This book allowed me to be different and told me it was not only OKAY, it was FABULOUS! My difference gave me power... and it still does. My son's own differences are now his strengths as well, thanks in part to this book.

This book is a great one to grow up on... and gives you one heck of a memory to share with kids and grandkids.

Anyone who is offended or mortified or scarred in any way by this book had problems before they started reading this book. Don't blame imagination. Blame the inability to stand so close to the flame that imagination ignites in a child!

    1 out of 5 stars This is a CHILDREN'S book ????? .......2007-01-30

I will strongly diagree with most of the reviews here. This is not a classic, this is a horrific book for a child. Let's see, the story starts with a boy drowning just because he did not obey. Then FIVE times we see a death sentence attempted to be carried out on an innocent person. And the moral of the story seems to be that if you are found guilty, try to trick the judge. Sorry, this is not something that will be in my house.

This story got me interested in the beginning. I couldn't put it down. Good characters, fun story and kept me wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars An unforgettable book!.......2007-08-21

I finished reading this book several months ago but I just can't get it out of my mind so I decided to write a review as a `closure". This book is thought provoking and forces readers to re-examine things that are commonly believed or taken for granted
The writing is smooth and flows nicely for me. Many of the characters feel real. Yes, their behaviors at times are comical. In this particular setting though, the silliness is more than suitable and provides a stark contrast to all the sad things that were/are happening in Nathan and Tommy's past and present. Real life is just like that, on all that shiny surfaces lay many dark secrets and angst. Nathan, the narrator, as many have said, is deeply flawed and not likeable to some. I, however, feel he is more than real and at times some degree of kinship. Growing up that way he did, his annoyance about people is completely understandable. I sympathize with his inclination of not wanting to be too nice to people. Tommy, on the hand, is not as flushed out as Nathan is. I really would have liked to know more of what was going on in his mind. Particularly his attraction to Simon; it can't be just sex. In the end, I care deeply for the brothers and feel a profound sadness for their fates. This is also where I feel Mr. Yates' mastery lays: there is never talk of love between Nathan and Tommy in the entire book but it's there for all to see. It was never just sex between them, it's something more profound than that. As a reader, this is where the thinking comes in: is this really bad if it's the only way they can be happy?? In the end, I am deeply sadden for Nathan's loss. I believe his journey is far from complete and I sincerely hope Mr. Yates will someday write a sequel. Yes, this is how much I care about Nathan. I want to know how he is doing and how he pieces his life together with such a void in his heart.

4 out of 5 stars Is incest really best?.......2007-07-04

What an interesting, fascinating and thought-provoking novel. Sad and funny, sweet and scary, pleasant and painful. Much like life, really.

The story of "The Brothers Bishop" centers around Nathan Bishop, a gay man living by himself in the house he grew up in, and his younger brother, Tommy. Nathan is leading a life he basically enjoys when Tommy, his current boy-toy, and a straight couple Tommy is friends with drop in on Nathan. Add a fifteen-year-old boy coming to grips with his sexuality into the mix and, as they say, hilarity ensues.

In the hands of a lesser author this could've wound up going any number of directions. It could've ended up as a rolicking sex-comedy, or another stereotypical Gay Tragedy! (tm) (though it almost ended up being that... see below).

Instead what we end up with is a story centerting around a main character who is, frankly, fairly unlikeable on a lot of levels. He's got some seriously violent tendencies and a mean-streak a mile wide. These things aren't necessarily his fault, but it does present one with a character that has some interesting flaws.

Equally interesting is the character of Tommy, though this isn't apparent at first. As you might've picked up from the other reviews and summaries, Tommy and Nathan have an ongoing incestual relationship with each other. It began when they were young, and though it has largely stopped in their adult years, it's still something that looms large in their lives. I, for one, am convinced that much of Tommy's behavior in the book comes from the fact that he's so in love with his brother he doesn't have room in his heart for anyone else (though he certainly makes room in his bed for everyone else).

The character of Simon was also fascinating. Basically, he's a male Lolita (the sort of boy I refer to as a "Ganymede"). He's just learning about gay sexuality and going through all the usual teen angst stuff that happens to all kids. His presence winds up presenting a great deal of temptation for one of the main characters.

I really enjoyed the writing style of the book as well (as I had with the author's other novel, "Leave Myself Behind"). He's a very descriptive writer. I was able to picture the house on the beach in great detail due entirely to his amazing descriptions of the place.

The book is quite intelligent and thought-provoking, I as I mentioned earlier. You will probably find yourself questioning the incestual relationship between the brothers, the choices one of the main characters makes regarding Simon, and certainly you will probably find yourself questioning the choice one of the characters makes at the very end.

One thing that did impress me about this book is that the author did not fall into cliche. I generally could not guess what was going to happen next. Things I thought might happen (like a couple of the minor characters being lovers, or a fire gutting one of the locations in the book), did not occur. Things I thought wouldn't happen (like the previously mentioned choice one of the main characters makes at the end of the novel), did happen.

The only real criticism I have about this book is this: in Gay Fiction (tm), there appears to be an unwritten rule that at least one of your major characters must end up either A: gay-bashed, B: dead, or C: AIDS infected. Unfortunately Mr Yates choose to have one of those three things happen, and I was frankly a little annoyed at that.

Still, beyond that thing I'm so vaguely refering to, the novel was extraordinary and well worth the price. I'd planned to go to sleep last night after reading two chapters. Instead I went to sleep two+ hours later after having finished the book in a single sitting.

What greater praise could a writer ask for?

    5 out of 5 stars Totally engaging.......2007-05-15

This book is one of those stories that keeps you reading until the last page. When I had to put it down, I couldn't wait to return to the narrative. I had never heard of Bert Yates before, but am now planning on reading his first book. While "The Brothers Bishop" may not rival literary classics, it is a classic in itself.

2 out of 5 stars A collection of cliches and unlikeable characters.......2007-02-09

I was drawn to this book by the positive reviews that it received in a variety of places. Although I was interested enough to finish it, I would have trouble recommending it to others. Part of my willingness to see it through was seeing what cliches would come to pass. The rest was a desire to see if it could overcome so many obvious plot devices.

The tableau is a familiar one for novels--a group of people brought together for a short time together. In this case, they are guests staying at the home of the protagonist, Nathan. Some are invited, while others are not and the duration of the visit isn't obvious until their arrival. The other characters are drawn from the small Connecticut town where Nathan lives (and where he and his brother, Tommy, were raised). One important character appears mostly as a "memory", this being Nathan and Tommy's father, a bitter depressed man who raised them as a widower.

The characters are pretty stock: Nathan is the "responsible son" who has stayed in the town where he grew-up, unhappily teaching school and living a lonely life. Tommy has escaped to New York City. He is the beautiful young man for whom everything comes easily. His boyfriend of the moment, Phillip, is a rather dim character who never makes much of an impression. Joining Tommy and Phillip from New York is a young couple consisting of a closeted (but not for long) gay man and his new wife, who is realizing her role as a beard. Rounding out the cast is Simon, a sensitive lad from Nathan's summer school remedial English class. So, we have the beard, the closeted/questioning guy, the slut, the airhead, and the miserable undersexed narrator. We get incest flashbacks, sex between Simon and Tommy, threats to Nathan's job, an archeological dig that goes badly, and various revelations about Tommy & Nathan's father. Nathan discovers that he is his father's son and Nathan and Tommy discover their closeness as brothers. The revelations about family are handled in a pretty ham-handed way and the relationship between the brothers seems more a matter of the author's obvious plotting and narration rather than a natural outcome of the story. The concluding sections are a kitchen sink collection of cliches from gay fiction and other genres including suicide, an abusive father, revelations that humanize the dead father, and various small town scandals. Nathan's future is a bit ambiguous at the end, but other key plot lines are tied up a little too neatly. Like another reviewer, I thought the women came off particularly poorly, although the characters are weak and unsympathetic, generally. The book would have been stronger if the brothers' characters weren't so cartoon-ish and if the responsible Nathan didn't behave so unbelievably in protecting his brother. It also would have helped to jettison a few a cliches and let the characters drive the plot rather than imposing so many obvious plot devices.

    5 out of 5 stars Liberating voices..........2004-01-23

Karen and Garth Baker-Fletcher used to teach at my seminary; both are now on faculty at Claremont School of Theology. Both are theologians who put their beliefs into strong practice, working out through their lives what it means to model and reflect their principles in their relationship with each other and with the world.

This is modeled in the very structure of this text, My Sister, My Brother: while it follows the pattern of being a systematic theology in its broadest sense (looking at the different categories of traditional theology - God, Christ, Creation, Ecclesiology/Tradition, etc.), it does so from two perspectives that are related but distinct, with a conversation engaged at at each section's conclusion. This is in keeping with the sense of theological conversation methodology a la David Tracy and Gordon Kaufmann, adapted by Will Coleman to the term 'tribal talk'. This conversation has many aspects -- it is inductive, iconoclastic, concerned with social and historical position, and diunital (appreciating the differences, what biblical scholar Walter Brueggemann calls living in the tension between).

The two perspectives here are Womanist and Xodus thought. Karen Baker-Fletcher takes the womanist perspective, drawing from the resources of her own background and the intellectual developments of womanism from Alice Walker, Delores Williams, and others. Womanism derives firstly from a reaction to Feminist theology, done primary by academic women of European background. Black women, while relating to many of the aspects of feminist theology and thought, saw that important elements of their own experience were not included. There is a unique perspective to women who were also black, having to endure the double-discrimination of gender and racial inequalities (Grant would later add a third category, the economic/poverty issue, that also plagues so many African-American women).

Garth Baker-Fletcher writes from the Xodus perspective -- Xodus being a term of his creation, firmly planted in the second-generation of Black (male) theology, a liberation response to the continuing situation of African-Americans in the United States of inequality and racial injustice. Xodus derives in part from the same impulses that compelled Malcolm X to adopt the 'unknown' as his last name, recalling both that which was lost and that which can be reclaimed. Xodus also inspires thought about the biblical text Exodus, in which the people of Israel are led out of captivity into liberation. Xodus looks beyond simple liberation to issues of reconstruction and renewal, looking with alarm on the situation confronting 'ordinary' African-American persons in America today from economic and societal pressures. As do many theologians, Garth Baker-Fletcher adapts the language to suit his context -- using capitalisation, boldface, italics, and Ebonics-derived terminology (often in what might be traditionally considered ungrammatical or non-standard ways), he shakes up the reader visually as well as intellectually.

While both Karen and Garth Baker-Fletcher speak from these perspectives, they are careful to speak for themselves only, inviting others from their perspectives to add their voices to the theological discussion. Both Womanism and Xodus thought qualify as liberation theologies, looking for freedom, equality and justice for all.

There is life here. There is love here. There is commitment and dedication to the betterment of all of humanity here. These two voices call upon others to join the chorus in proclaiming liberty and bringing the future into being.

        Product Description

Legendary guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, Hubert Sumlin, T-Bone Walker, Johnnie Winter, Albert King, Freddie King, and Chuck Berry are known to all blues fans for their remarkable soloing abilities. But the complete blues guitarist must do more than shine in the solo spotlight. And that is why every great soloist is also a great fill-in player. Tasteful fill-in licks support and inspire the singer while adding fire and drive to the performance. For example, Blind Lemon Jeffersons string-snapping fill-ins provided the perfect complement for his rough-hewn blues songs. Both Louis Armstrong and Lester Young seemed to talk to the singer with their finely-crafted, jazzy fill-ins. And Henry Sunflower Vestines stinging, buzzsaw fill-ins never failed to drive his Canned Heat bandmates into a psychedelic frenzy. This book is accompanied by a user-friendly split-track CD allows you to sit in with a professional blues band while you learn to play blues fills behind a great singer, Charles Adkins. The Heat-Seeking Missile Blues Band is heard on the left channel; the fill-in licks are isolated on the right channel. This is not just another book of abstract how do I use these licks in real life? licks, but a collection of solid musical ideas that can be applied to thousands of real songs. Another fine contribution from Red Dog Music Books, designed for the early intermediate-to intermediate guitarist. Some of the licks are accessible to highly motivated near-beginners, and the book is an excellent resource for teachers.

A guide to symbols and several helpful fretboard diagrams are included. The licks are recorded on electric guitar but can also be played on acoustic. Overall, a very fine book that will provide unlimited learning and enjoyment. Many slide guitar books are confusing because they try to cover too many tunings. Everything here is in open E. Songs include standards such as Joe Turner Blues, St. Louis Blues, Sportin Life Blues, House of the Rising Sun, Midnight Special, along with several new songs written to standard blues changes. Like Hound Dog Taylor, J.B. Hutton, and Elmore James? Then you will like this book.

Blues guitar teachers, serious students, and blues band guitarists will all enjoy his large collection of 100% pure blues and boogie solos for guitar. Twenty-five exciting solos are presented here, each played over its own rhythm progression. Every solo is transcribed in both standard notation and tablature, and played note for-note with a full band on the professionally recorded companion CD. This book is for the intermediate, or better, guitarist whose interests include authentic, non-commercial blues musicthe good stuff that is seldom heard via mass-market channels such as radio and television. Guitar teachers might use the book to introduce new hand positions, fingerings, chords, and theoretical concepts. Each solo is made up of many interesting phrases (licks) that can be adapted and incorporated into your own style. The solos are relatively challenging, and can be used in blues jams and on stage. Theodore Bryan, poor and ragged, sits on the curbstone dejectedly. Homeless and lonely, it seems nobody cared about him. At that lonely moment, a voice above him questions, "Well, my boy, aren't you coming into church?" It is the voice of the bishop, who from that day forth influences Theo deeply. To him the boy's heart goes out in reverential love. To be like "the bishop" is not easy, but Theo changes his life in remarkable ways. Once a rough street boy who stole and lied, now his desire is to be "The Bishop's Shadow". No one can read this book unmoved. Theo's generosity in carrying bread, soup, or bright flowers into the poor tenement houses is quite challenging. His purpose and perserverance in searching for Jack Finney is surprising. Above all, his resolve to follow in the bishop's footsteps, and his great longing to behold once more that noble face is truly heart-breaking. This true story of the 1800s apepals to all ages. You will enjoy reading it again and again.
