Book Description
Published to glowing praise in 1990, Science for All Americans defined the science-literate American--describing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes all students should retain from their learning experience--and offered a series of recommendations for reforming our system of education in science, mathematics, and technology. Benchmarks for Science Literacy takes this one step further. Created in close consultation with a cross-section of American teachers, administrators, and scientists, Benchmarks elaborates on the recommendations to provide guidelines for what all students should know and be able to do in science, mathematics, and technology by the end of grades 2, 5, 8, and 12. These grade levels offer reasonable checkpoints for student progress toward science literacy, but do not suggest a rigid formula for teaching. Benchmarks is not a proposed curriculum, nor is it a plan for one: it is a tool educators can use as they design curricula that fit their student's needs and meet the goals first outlined in Science for All Americans. Far from pressing for a single educational program, Project 2061 advocates a reform strategy that will lead to more curriculum diversity than is common today. IBenchmarks emerged from the work of six diverse school-district teams who were asked to rethink the K-12 curriculum and outline alternative ways of achieving science literacy for all students. These teams based their work on published research and the continuing advice of prominent educators, as well as their own teaching experience. Focusing on the understanding and interconnection of key concepts rather than rote memorization of terms and isolated facts, Benchmarks advocates building a lasting understanding of science and related fields. In a culture increasingly pervaded by science, mathematics, and technology, science literacy require habits of mind that will enable citizens to understand the world around them, make some sense of new technologies as they emerge and grow, and deal sensibly with problems that involve evidence, numbers, patterns, logical arguments, and technology--as well as the relationship of these disciplines to the arts, humanities, and vocational sciences--making science literacy relevant to all students, regardless of their career paths. If Americans are to participate in a world shaped by modern science and mathematics, a world where technological know-how will offer the keys to economic and political stability in the twenty-first century, education in these areas must become one of the nation's highest priorities. Together with Science for All Americans, Benchmarks for Science Literacy offers a bold new agenda for the future of science education in this country, one that is certain to prepare our children for life in the twenty-first century.

Great Resource.......2006-02-26
This resource is for teachers who are interested in understanding science as it pertains to the classroom. It provides information as to what students need to know by the end of each specific grade level. I highly recommend this excellent resource for those who are pursuing National Board Certification and/or those who are pursuing excellence in science instruction.
A Help for Science Teachers.......2003-01-30
I teach science in a small, very rural school to grades 7-12. I have been using this book for the first time this year.
I like how this book makes the benchmarks clear and specific. It doesn't just say, "Students will understand the structure of atoms" the way my state's standards do. It spells out exactly what the student should know about the structure of the atom.
I used to run a very textbook driven curriculum, but I found that the textbooks were woefully inadequate, but I lacked direction as to what I should be doing. When I recently changed schools, I also discovered this book, and it presented the answer.
At my new school, my textbooks are only a reference that mostly sit on the shelf. I have designed my curriculum more around these standards and my state standards.
This book makes it clear that there are many topics that I have taught that don't need to be taught. For example, during the past 2 years, I taught photosynthesis and respiration from the book: electron transport chain, pyruvate, and all. This year, I talked more about the carbon and the energy and where all the atoms went. My students this year can actually answer questions about these subjects. For the most part, they understand them. My previous students did not understand.
This book also has an excellent section on dealing with vocabulary. Much of science education substitutes vocabulary for understanding. I am now using many fewer technical words, and even then only introducing those words when the students understand the concepts.
I don't agree with some of the things in this book. There are a few subjects I think are more important than the authors do. There are also a few subjects the authors think are more important than I do. I also dislike their emphasis on attitudes about science and the amount of time they spend on the culture and history of science. I would like to see more emphasis on content.
Overall, however, this will make you a better teacher. If you are a parent, it will equip you to question what your child is learning (at any level) and to get your school to start making the changes our education system needs.
Benchmarks in designing curriculum.......2000-06-11
Many states have created specific standards for students to acheive throughtout their schooling. This publication is extremely useful in helping to understand the intent of standards and what they look like in the classroom. Anyone that is working on science and math curriculum must have a copy of this. It is also very useful for new teachers to get insight into exemplary content and practices. This document also helps people understand misconceptions that students develop over certain concepts. I've been using it continuously and have bought copies for many people in my school district.

Book Description
Having completed the two cycles of legend to which she has devoted her career so far, Anne Rice
gives us now her most thoughtful and powerful book, a novel about the childhood of
Christ the Lord based on the gospels and on the most respected New Testament scholarship.
The book’s power derives from the passion its author brings to the writing, and the way in which she summons up the voice, the presence, the words of the young Jesus who tells the story.

Customer Reviews:
Moving story of a young Christ..........2007-09-16
Anne Rice is best known for her vampire fiction, but, in her latest novel, she strikes out in a bold new direction, telling the story of an adolescent Jesus Christ. She handles the most revered icon of Christianity with care, crafting an excellent story built on meticulous research, keen insight and imaginative wonder.
As the Holy Land burns under Rome's tight-fisted rule, 7-year-old Jesus and his family journey home to Nazareth. Along the way, Jesus is beset with troubled thoughts about the violence consuming his homeland, his brother James' unreasonable jealousy and why everyone -- including his father, Joseph -- treats both his mother, Mary, and him with fearful awe.
Inside, Jesus knows he's different. He accidentally brings clay pigeons to life, sees hosts of angels in his dreams and when he prays for rain to stop, the sun instantly shines forth. Behind these wondrous miracles, however, is a peculiar dread. Slowly, he realizes that which makes him different must also separate him from his loved ones, putting him on path that he must walk alone.
Writing such a novel -- especially from a young Jesus' perspective -- is an endeavor rife with opportunity for controversy, but Rice acquits herself marvelously. There's nothing sacrilegious here as Rice paints a poignant picture of a deeply Jewish Jesus and his Jewish family. Though the novel is steeped in the wonder surrounding Christ's life, it's not an evangelical tale. Rather, it is a tender musing on the childhood of perhaps the greatest figure in history and faith.
Classy.......2007-09-13
When I first came across this book in the library, I was not interested in reading it because even though I hadn't read Anne Rice before, I was slightly thrown off by the thought of a secular writer writing about the silent years of the Christ.
I found out months later that the author had indeed returned to her Catholic faith and I then purchased the book.
The book starts out very captivating and I couldn't put it down. I personally haven't meditated much on these silent years of Christ and I think Rice does a great job of filling in the gap.
Of course, the story is largely speculative but theologically sound. I really like that she speaks in Jesus' own voice, if you will.
The Jesus she portrays is a Child and yet He is more. He is wise, solemn and different. He knows He is but not why and He wants to find out. He is playful, He cries, He is hardworking. I really like how the writer succeeds at at a Jesus who wants to know more and yet does not want to disobey his parents.
The middle of the book gets bogged down in historical and political details that have no great appeal for me but will be fascinating for those who enjoy such things. But I did vastly enjoy the descriptions of past, native Jewish life.
Her portrayal of the Holy Family is real and solid. I can't doubt that they could be any other way than as she describes. Joseph is strong, honest and wise and does his best to bring up a Child. The Blessed Mother radiates with a intense but quiet humility and she loves her Child. The description of the extended family is very good as well. I wasn't sure what to make of Cleopas. I found him annoying at times and I wished to know a little more about Salome; the little busy woman-girl. I really liked her.
Even if this reading material isn't your usual cup of tea, read it for the delicious, yummy food and for the author's note/afterword.
Overall, supremely sublime and recommended.
Lost in faith?.......2007-09-08
Anna Rice reconversion to catholicism also spells the beginning of the end for her imagination, creativity, openness, and even world view. This book is a testimony to this unfortunate reality. While the latest trends in spirituality and research on Jesus, has led to the conclusion that Jesus was simply a wise man, an old and wise soul, yet married with a son, Anne Rice falls back on her old faith, revealing to her readers a tunnel vision. In a time when america is becoming a dangerous coutry filled with religious fanatics, this book reinforces the fallacy that Jesus was divine, a belief or blind faith that has led humanity to murder in the name of jesus, and to deny the existence of our divine self and responsability to "know thyself", the true secret to life as revealed by Jesus, Buddha and Sacrates.
A woman of beauty........2007-08-30
Some years ago, I heard of Anne Rice's apparent conversion, and her then in progress work - Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt. I was cautiously optimistic at best.
Fast forward to this past week - I've picked up a copy of the book
There's not a shred of doubt in my mind, that the architect of the modern vampire media, is now True, a student of the Word, a Daughter of Eve.
Not only that, I think she very well may be the next C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, the great Christian fiction writers.
And throughout her novel, it is evident enough that it is filled with her personal prayers.
".. I went down deep to the very bottoms of the mountains; the earth like a prison enclosed me. Yet you have brought up my life from corruption..."
"... Let my cry of joy come to you, Lord, give me understanding as you promised..."
And as a writer of historical fiction, she understands. She understands His story.
"... all stories are part of one great story...."
"... Lord, Lord, whoever I am, whatever I am, whatever I am meant to be, I am part of this, this world that is all of a flowing wonder- like this music. And you are with us. You are here. You have pitched your tent amongst us. This music is your song. This is your house..."
And she ends the novel with this line.
"... Father... I am your child."
I think she is beautiful.
Can you say Hallelujah?.......2007-08-28
I wasn't sure what to think actually, vampire novels, vampire novels with Jesus in them, now Jesus novels. Maybe next will be a Jesus novel with a vampire and witches and angels, oh my!
Really folks, this is a good novel and Anne Rice has a refreshing new subject with plenty of relevance. I'm just not on a big "born again" reading binge right now.
