This Tutorial Text covers a wide range of material, from the basics of laser resonators to advanced topics in laser diode pumping. The subject matter is presented in descriptive terms that are understandable by the technical professional who does not have a strong foundation in fundamental laser optics.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2003-10-26
As a student with a thorough interest in the study of Lasers (with an emphasis on diodes and the light-emission spectra), I found this book incredibly interesting and useful. Richard Scheps has written a book that not only provides ample information and study, but also he writes in a simple (yet not patronizingly so) and understandable language. Bravo Richard Scheps for this terrific addition to my laboratory!
Book Description
This introduction to Atomic and Molecular Physics explains how our present model of atoms and molecules has been developed over the last two centuries, both by many experimental discoveries and, from the theoretical side, by the introduction of quantum physics to the adequate description of micro-particles. It illustrates the wave model of particles by many examples and shows the limits of classical description. The interaction of electromagnetic radiation with atoms and molecules and its potential for spectroscopy is outlined in great detail and, in particular, lasers as modern spectroscopic tools are discussed thoroughly. Many examples and problems with solutions are offered to encourage readers to actively participate in applying and adapting the theory to specific situations.

Book Description
Many universities now offer a course in biomedical optics, but lack a textbook specifically addressing the topic. Intended to fill this gap, An Introduction to Biomedical Optics is the first comprehensive, introductory text describing both diagnostic and therapeutic optical methods in medicine. It provides the fundamental background needed for graduate students in biomedical and electrical engineering, physics, biology, and medicine to learn about several biomedical optics issues. The textbook is divided into three main sections: general optics theory, therapeutic applications of light, and diagnostic optical methods. Each chapter has different levels of detail to build students' knowledge from one level to the next. The first section covers the history of optics theory and the basic science behind light-tissue interactions. It also introduces the relevant approaches and approximations used to describe light propagation in turbid biological media. In the second section, the authors look more closely at light-tissue interactions and their applications in different medical areas, such as wound healing and tissue welding. The final section examines the various diagnostic methods that are employed using optical techniques. Throughout the text, the authors employ numerical examples of clinical and research requirements. Fulfilling the need for a concise biomedical optics textbook, An Introduction to Biomedical Optics addresses the theory and applications of this growing field.
Product Description
This book represents the first comprehensive treatment of the subject, covering the theoretical principles, present experimental status and important applications of short-pulse laser-matter interactions. Femtosecond lasers have undergone dramatic technological advances over the last fifteen years, generating a whole host of new research activities under the theme of ultrafast science. The focused light from these devices is so intense that ordinary matter is torn apart within a few laser cycles. This book takes a close-up look at the exotic physical phenomena which arise as a result of this new form of light-matter interaction, covering a diverse set of topics including multiphoton ionization, rapid heatwaves, fast particle generation and relativistic self-channeling. These processes are central to a number of exciting new applications in other fields, such as microholography, optical particle accelerators and photonuclear physics.

Introduction to Solid-State Lighting
ASIN: 0748408363 |
Book Description
The "blue laser" is an exciting new device used in physics. The potential is now being recognized for its development into a commercial lighting system using about a tenth of the power and with a thousand times the operating lifetime of a comparable conventional system. This comprehensive work introduces the subject at a level suitable for graduate students. It covers the basics physics of light emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) based on gallium nitride and related nitride semiconductors, and gives an outline of their structural, transport and optical properties, and the relevant device physics. It begins with the fundamentals, and covers both theory and experiment, as well as an examination of actual and potential device applications. Shuji Nakamura and Nichia Chemicals Industries made the initial breakthroughs in the field, and these have revealed that LEDs and LDs are a sophisticated physical phenomenon and a commercial reality.

Book Description
Hidden deep beneath Manhattan lies a warren of tunnels, sewers, and galleries, mostly forgotten by those who walk the streets above. There lies the ultimate secret of the Museum Beat. When two grotesquely deformed skeletons are found deep in the mud off the Manhattan shoreline, museum curator Margo Green is called in to aid the investigation. Margo must once again team up with police lieutenant D'Agosta and FBI agent Pendergast, as well as the brilliant Dr. Frock, to try and solve the puzzle. The trail soon leads deep underground, where they will face the awakening of a slumbering nightmare.
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous read!!!.......2007-09-14
I've gotten hooked on the Preston/Child colaborations since reading "The Ice Limit".I saw the movie "The Relic" and wasn't too thrilled about reading the book. I knew I needed to read it before I could read "The Reliquary". Hollywood can really trash a good book while translating it to film. In this case-very rare-the sequel blew me away. I've ordered another book to learn more about the underground dwellers in N.Y. city-fascinating! I plan on reading all of their books.
Reliquary.......2007-07-20
Great book! Preston & Child have done it again. I loved Relic and Reliquary is just as thrilling.
Better than the first one..........2007-07-12
OK, I'd seen the movie of Relic a couple of times and enjoyed and was tempted to start reading this series at this novel, but I went back and started at Relic, and I'm glad I did. Relic the novel is substantually different than Relic the movie. (Pendergast is excised from the movie, for example). I enjoyed this book more than the first one. It is much more over the top, bigger, broader and more threatening. Start with Relic, and then read this one.
Reliquary.......2007-07-05
This book is typical of the intensity and mystic writting of Douglas Preston. He has many twist and continues to engage the reader with his story of the unexplainable that he bring to the real world.
Great Book!.......2007-05-15
Great sequel book to "The Relic"! Good action and suspense! Should read The Relic first to get the full impact!
Product Description
While exploring the unused sections of the Ancient city of Atlantis, Major John Sheppard and Dr. Rodney McKay stumble on a recording device that contains a new Stargate address. The address leads them to a world with a mysterious ruined city that may be part of an Ancient repository, or it may just be yet another trap for the unwary.
Customer Reviews:
time-lines in the stories.......2007-05-19
I found the books really good, but the entire time they were messing with the months and moments in every single story. For example this one takes place about four months after the issue with the teams biggest human enemy the Genii and after they did battle with a crazed wraith on another planet a couple of weeks later. I mean if they want to make the books they should do them in the order that the tv series played in rather then going back and forth and tossing certain details that they never mentioned in the show. But all in all this was a really good story, I especially got a kick when they mentioned the details of sheppards first conversion before he went through it a second time in season 2. I recommend this to any who like the tv show.
Great Book.......2007-04-16
I bought this book to read it in the airport while on a trip, It was a great book, kept me very entertained.
Love how well the author got the characters, got a few laughs on Rodneys comments and Sheppard's attitude.
I recommend it, is a short book, good jepardy.
Andrea
I am actually looking for a new one to read on the trip back.
treat for Wells fans as well.......2007-04-06
The other reviewers have covered this book from the point of view of Stargate Atlantis fans (and also mentioned the huge wait you can expect for this book)-- but as someone who's a Martha Wells fan first and foremost, I wanted to add that her readers won't be disappointed by this book in any way! She does a wonderful job of catching the rhythm and voices of the characters from the show, but there is also the tight plotting and somewhat gothic feel that her readers are used to-- in particular the scenes in the abandoned, haunted city and being hunted in the underground labyrinth are reminiscent of scenes from the Ile Rien books-- but with Sheppard and McKay standing in (hilariously) for Gil and Ilias. In other words, she's brought all her strengths to this project, and even if you love Wells but don't watch this show regularly, I think Wells fans will find it an entertaining read & a worthwhile addition to their collections.
One of the best TV Series books I've read.......2007-02-15
Although this came highly recommended by friends who are Stargate Atlantis fans, I was reluctant to get it - I've been burned by horrible pro fiction based on other series, like Trek. However, this book was exceptionally good. The plot was tight, the characters were very well done, and the twists kept me turning the page to the end. It was everything I love about the series, and more. I would highly recommend this book to any fan of the show.
Pushed All My Fandom Buttons.......2007-02-06
I chose this particular book over the other titles available in Stargate Atlantis novels because the plot of the book is not a reminiscent of an already-done SG:A episode. This is the first book from Martha Wells that I've read, and I am already waiting impatiently for her next SG:A novel, Entanglement (projected for March '07). She's obviously aware of the slash fanbase in this fandom and her writing has more than enough Rodney/Sheppard interaction to leave a slash fan happy while keeping them in-character.
Wells explored and expanded the concepts behind the ATA gene, especially its mind-reading and psychological component and how various Ancient technologies interact with it. Her wonderful concept underlines the great potential that the ATA gene have. Definitely a must read for slash fan and non-slash fan alike.
Excerpt to the first chapter is available from the author's website (.......) if you are unsure if her characterization and writing style would suit you.

A Treasure to be Cherished for Generations to Come! .......2007-08-10
This book is a rare treasure! It contains the finest collection of photos and detailed text related to the sacred articles belonging to the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) as well as other religious article dating back centuries. Any person interested in history, religion or the the arts will be thrilled and mesmerized by the quality and beauty of not only the contents but its' presentation as well. A gift to adorn and enrich any library.
An Amazing Work!!!!, August 31, 2005.......2006-06-17
I came across this book on the shelves of my university's library while I was searching for other books. At first sight, I felt like I found a treasure, since the book was in an elegant case, which was also in another case! I just wanted to take a look at the book, however I found myself sitting in the library for two hours going through all the book! An amazing work! I felt like I just had a journey to the Sacred Relics section of Topkapi Museum, which I have been like 10 years ago and I hardly remember. The stories of the Trusts, along with their wonderful high quality pictures, are told in elegant way. How the relics were used in the prewar ceremonies and coronation/sword-bearing ceramonies of the Ottoman Empire and how they were respected and honored and loved in an utmost manner, to the degree of craziness, just amazed me. I think I will check this huge book out from the library and spend the evenings of the next weeks reading it. This book is an amazing journey to history, too!

The Sacred Trusts.......2005-08-05
An outstanding book that would make a valuble addition to any book collection, in particular to people of the islamic faith. The honoured possesions of the prophet Mohammed(pbuh) and his companions and family members(pbu them), photagraphed and presented in a most beautiful way with excellent commentaries on the historical relevance of such items. Printed on high embossed quality paper and presented in a magnificent box to protect the book,no money has been spared to present the prophets PBUH possessions. A Must buy.
The missing late history gem!!!.......2005-05-23
On behalf of all, I would express very big gratitude to all who endeavored to make this work appear.
Some people even don't know whether any remnants that belong to a prophet up to these days...They did not even here about Topkapi museum...
For those faithful ones, I would say:" Would you like to strengthen you spiritual connections with your prophet; that is the quest for Divine Peace"
Holy Quran:002.248: And (further) their Prophet said to them: "A Sign of his authority is that there shall come to you the Ark of the covenant, with (an assurance) therein of security from your Lord, and the relics left by the family of Moses and the family of Aaron, carried by angels. In this is a symbol for you if ye indeed have faith."
These invaluable items are them selves a real covenant content to all humanity.
The title is surely going to break records and reach beyond horizons of fame.
I am happy that I lived the time to witness this holy treasure relating to our prophets.

Cenotaph
ASIN: 1931337128 |
Book Description
Originally drafted over a six-month period, the five-line sections of each poem in Reliquaries were written mostly as walking meditations in the hills and woods above and along the banks of the Occoquan River in Virginia. While that landscape is present in several places in the collection, the mind in these poems wanders arctic zones, England, Europe, the distances and openness of the American Midwest where the poet grew up, and takes up subjects such as the death of family and friends, faith and doubt, beauty and the sublime, philosophy and art. This book is Pankey's most expansive, accessible and wide-ranging to date. Written in long lines that, like Whitman's, catalog and collect, arrange out of the scattershot an order-even if only a momentary order, even if only a relic of order on which one places faith in a greater unifying order.
Completed on a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship at the same time as 2003's Oracle Figures (Ausable Press), Reliquaries is a cousin and companion to that book. It is a book-length sequence of poems that combines the spiritual and sometimes hermetic quest of Pankey's short lyric poems of the 1990s (Apocrypha, The Late Romances and Cenotaph) with his more directly narrative, plain-spoken poems of the 1980s (For the New Year, Heartwood). Like a reliquary, each poem not only holds shards of memory, relics of the past, but each poem is a meditation upon the complexity of memory-its uncertainty and mutability, its precision and candor, its grave density and its ether-weight.
Eric Pankey has received the Walt Whitman Award from The Academy of American Poets, the Poetry Award from the Library of Virginia and fellowships from the Ingram Merrill Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. A professor of English at George Mason University, he lives in Fairfax, Virginia.
Customer Reviews:
An anthology of original poetic meditations on the complexity of memory.......2005-12-10
Reliquaries is an anthology of original poetic meditations on the complexity of memory, originally written as a companion volume to "Oracle Figures". The long lines of the poem are fluid yet orderly, with a rhythm and tempo that underscore the reflective meaning. A soulful and contemplative collection that invites rereading and quiet meditation. "Small Confessions": A whole flock of waxwings occupied the holly, feasted on the berries, / And as if a single brush stroke, the flock lifted, banked, settled in the / Bradford pear, / Only to rise, to retrace the curve back to the holly. / Rilke says, "Even / forgetting / Has a shape in the permanent realm of mutation." / Even, I wonder, the forgetting of memory having forgotten?
A Marvel.......2005-03-15
W. H. Auden, who, like Seymour Glass, is never wrong, defined the difference between major and minor poets as ones who do not evolve over the course of their writing lives and those who do. By this criterion, Eric Pankey is a major poet, and by any criterion an extraordinary one as well. His seventh book is less a collection than other books of poetry, including Pankey's previous ones (the distance between _Heartwood,_ a word used once here, and this book is astronomical). _Reliquaries_ is a unified field of connections; links between the unexpected; startling metaphysics; strange ordinariness or ordinary strangeness offered directly, as literal fact. Mystical breakthroughs come at the reader with quiet, inarguable authority, affirming journey, rather than destination.
There are three sources for this authority. First is the comforting, no-nonsense objectivity of the language, the poetry's insistence on the physical, the logical, the unemotional.
In my idleness I imagine the fly might one day discover a way through the glass,
And the miracle will not be the other side, but the liquid simplicity of the passage.
That said, _y_ is not _x,_
And perhaps there are other ways to solve for those particular values, perhaps better proofs.
The soul, bound as any matter to gravity, moves from room to room,
A slowly deflating balloon let go that rides the thermal up, the cold down.
If transcendent experiences are to carry the weight of conviction, this is the way they must be presented.
The vocabulary of _Reliquaries_ is precise, informed, and new. It makes poetry accommodate "karst," "narthex," "mudra," "catenary," "kohl," and "lectionary." These words, used naturally and necessarily, point to the specificity and wideness of experience in _Reliquaries._
The second source of authority is equally poetic. It comes from the long, mostly end-stopped lines that imbue the world of this book with the literalness of prose without sacrificing the dazzling force of art. The sheen is mesmerizing. At 110 pages _Reliquaries_ may be longer than usual, yet this reader finds it as impossible to stop reading as to cut a Beethoven symphony in the middle of a movement. The book compels the reader into its ambience. I have read it thrice, all the way through each time. Edgar Allan Poe wrote that a long poem is but succession of short poems. _Reliquaries_ goes Poe one better. It is both.
Finally, the impact derives from a feeling never named that nevertheless comes through in every line: love. Decently awake readers will see the nods to anger and despair, and without such acknowledgments, this would be a work of delusion. Instead, its fidelity to experience carries us beyond what we think we know to what we can know, the marvel of process. "I admit to faith, even when I come up empty-handed with only a specter of faith," the voice writes, with brutal courage, having lovingly discarded "husks" in the first poem as he lovingly discards them in the last.
A voyage to and in the other, in a thousand tessellated lines that transport you where you may need to go. _What are you waiting for?_
Book Description
Nineteenth-century philologist and Biblical critic William Robertson Smith famously concluded that the sacred status of holy places derives not from their intrinsic nature but from their social character. Building upon this insight, Mecca and Eden uses Islamic exegetical and legal texts to analyze the rituals and objects associated with the sanctuary at Mecca.
Integrating Islamic examples into the comparative study of religion, Brannon Wheeler shows how the treatment of rituals, relics, and territory is related to the more general mythological depiction of the origins of Islamic civilization. Along the way, Wheeler considers the contrast between Mecca and Eden in Muslim rituals, the dispersal and collection of relics of the prophet Muhammad, their relationship to the sanctuary at Mecca, and long tombs associated with the gigantic size of certain prophets mentioned in the Quran.
Mecca and Eden succeeds, as few books have done, in making Islamic sources available to the broader study of religion.

Relics of the Christ
ASIN: 0226743160 |
Book Description
The famed linen cloth preserved in Turin Cathedral has provoked pious devotion, scientific scrutiny, and morbid curiosity. Imprinted with an image many faithful have traditionally believed to be that of the crucified Christ "painted in his own blood," the Shroud remains an object of intense debate and notoriety yet today.
In this amply illustrated volume, John Beldon Scott traces the history of the unique relic, focusing especially on the black-marble and gilt-bronze structure Guarino Guarini designed to house and exhibit it. A key Baroque monument, the chapel comprises many unusual architectural features, which Scott identifies and explains, particulary how the chapel's unprecedented geometry and bizarre imagery convey to the viewer the supernatural powers of the object enshrined there. Drawing on early plans and documents, he demonstrates how the architect's design mirrors the Shroud's strange history as well as political aspirations of its owners, the Dukes of Savoy. Exhibiting it ritually, the Savoy prized their relic with its godly vestige as a means to link their dynasty with divine purposes. Guarini, too, promoted this end by fashioning an illusionary world and sacred space that positioned the duke visually so that he appeared close to the Shroud during its ceremonial display. Finally, Scott describes how the additional need for an outdoor stage for the public showing of the relic to the thousands who came to Turin to see it also helped shape the urban plan of the city and its transformation into the Savoyard capital.
Exploring the mystique of this enigmatic relic and investigating its architectural and urban history for the first time, Architecture for the Shroud will appeal to anyone curious about the textile, its display, and the architectural settings designed to enhance its veneration and boost the political agenda of the ruling family.
