The propagation of mechanical disturbances in solids is of interest in many branches of the physical scienses and engineering. This book aims to present an account of the theory of wave propagation in elastic solids. The material is arranged to present an exposition of the basic concepts of mechanical wave propagation within a one-dimensional setting and a discussion of formal aspects of elastodynamic theory in three dimensions, followed by chapters expounding on typical wave propagation phenomena, such as radiation, reflection, refraction, propagation in waveguides, and diffraction. The treatment necessarily involves considerable mathematical analysis. The pertinent mathematical techniques are, however, discussed at some length.

Book Description

This new paperback edition of Dr Hudson’s advanced textbook presents the theory of small disturbances propagating through solids. The material is set out carefully in mathematical detail. The linearized theory of elasticity has now been replaced by a more fundamental approach based on a generalized theory of continuum mechanics. Despite this change of emphasis in solid mechanics there remain important areas of physics in which the linear theory is clearly of fundamental importance, especially in seismology, noise analysis and the non-destructive testing of materials. The author’s approach is to present the major results for the propagation of transient pulses in an unbounded isotropic material. He deals with compressional and shear waves, surface waves, wavefronts and raypaths in the first four chapters. The next two chapters, on initial-value and time-harmonic problems, investigate uniqueness, reciprocity and representations in terms of Green’s functions. Lamb’s problem is considered in chapters seven and eight, and viscoelastic materials are examined in the final section.

Applications of elastic wave phenomena are becoming ever more important in telecommunications (signal processing), medicine (echography), metallurgy (non-destructive testing) and in other fields, too. For example, millions of wave filters are currently produced each month for mobile phones. The objective of this first of two volumes is to study the different mechanisms of propagation in isotropic and anisotropic media. The main topics treated in this volume are an introduction of the main features for the simple case of fluids, tensorial expressions for the elasticity and piezoelectricity of crystals, solutions of the general equation of propagation in the form of slowness surfaces, and a study of the various types of guided waves (Rayleigh wave, Love wave, Lamb wave). The companion book, Vol. II, describes the generation and applications of the free and guided waves introduced in the present volume.

Whether you're interested in learning about piranhas for your own enlightenment or starting your own piranha tank, this book is great. There's a little information on most different types of piranhas and a lot of general information for piranha care. The author also goes into detail of his own experiences with piranhas in their natural environment.

not worth it.......2003-12-15

there isnt any information in here that anyone who has kept a successful fish tank wouldnt already know, and it seems like none of then info is specific to piranhas. he doesnt go over what size tanks piranhas need, or that they dont like a lot of light, or that they need a heater guard to prevent them from breaking it, or that they can chew through air hoses. seems like a basic fish keeping book plus 2 chapters on piranha history and species.

I have been exposed to Piranhas as pets for nearly 3 years. Two of my college roomates kept them and I found them to be excellent pets. When I endevoured into my own world of piranhas I found this book to be an extrememly helful tool in understanding the behavior and environment of the piranha. A must have for the beginer or an excellent addition for the more experienced.

In February, for mt 12th birthay, I got a Red-Bellied Piranha. This book has helped me mantain the tank and keep my fish alive. It is now December and my fish is still alive and is about 5 1/2 inches. The book is a must for any Piranha owner.

What a waste of money. You'd better of reading an article or an expert advise on the Internet than reading the entire book. Which adds to my frustration is the extra cost I encountered on shipping the book internationally.

i first got this book b4 i got the fish and found it to be most informative with good pictures and information contained threw out a good buy for any person wanting or thinking about keeping these fish... it is a book that is serious in the right places but not a real professional book like some that i have read

Like all books, this book also contains its pros and cons. Lets start with the pros.

This book gives first-time piranha keepers a general idea on what piranha keeping is like. Its topics range from introducing what a piranha is and highlighting the untruths of the this fish to the code of conduct of keeping this fish. The description on the species are accompanied by vivid photographs. There is also a section on advising readers on tank setup procedure. Other topics include the breeding, handling and feeding of the piranhas. I find topics such as the suitability of tank mates for piranhas and how to choose a piranha extremely useful.

However, although this book covers a wide range of topics, it is not written in detail. It does not even state what is the suitable tank environment for this fish. The classification is also outdated. For eg. Serrasalmus Nattereri has been reclassified to Pygocentrus Nattereri in the eighties, but it is still being referred to as Serrasalmus Nattereri in this book; and Serrasalmus Niger is still being reflected as "the black piranha", which in actual fact should be Serrasalmus Rhombeus.

In summary, I would say this is a great book with lots of colourful photographs for beginners, but not for people who have been keeping this fish for sometime.

One of the previous reviewers has just about told the whole story,or at least described the characters,and has done that bit of hard work for me.So I'm only obliged to say that you should buy this book if you need a whole lot of good laughs,if your world view includes absurdity,if your sense of humor is just a little skewed (and whose isn't?)and you get a good charge from ripping at religion.Especially the cuckoo kind.Very good book.Hard to put down in order to do ordinary daily tasks-what fun is that when all that hilarity is going on in Ransom's book? Hope that the author is a hard worker-will he cook up another knee-slapper,or will he take a nap?

God and the Virgin Mary in a miracle contest? Gators that eat bullies and poor old ladies' poodles? Birthday parties that turn into demon-exorcisms at the drop of a hair-doily? What the heck IS a hair-doliy, anyway? If God is really Catholic or even Fundamentalist, then this author is going straight to hell...but hopefully he'll write a few more knee-slappers like this intelligent, campy poke at human hypocrisy before he's burned at the stake...hee hee. Be warned; this one ain't for your aunt Nellie, especially if she lives in the South.

A real HOOT.......2000-05-20

This is no doubt the funniest book I have ever read. Totally hysterical from start to finish and the best thing of all is that it sounds like there's going to be a sequel. The author is making some very strong statements about religion and values and human "illusions" in this story, but I laughed so hard I almost cried. The story starts off with this main character, Karma Jones (born with the name "Elmer"), who is a bit arrogant, a bit lonely,a great deal too intelligent for his own good, perhaps, and UNBELIEVABLY witty. Karma/Elmer is from a little hick town in Florida, and when he was a young man he escaped his looney family to become a cartoonist in California. But, as things turn out, he becomes a restaurant owner and a "frustrated" cartoonist on the side. He is surrounded byall sorts of wacky characters: a film producer, a self-help guru who's really just a total mess, a gay theater owner who is making a play about Avenger drag queens, an actress with HUGE problems but a heart of gold, and many others. Karma is losing his faith in ...everything. So he decides to go home to see his mother on her birthday, as if this will shed any light on his trials! This character has almost the same kind of pompous, cutting view of the world as Ignatius Reilly did in Confederacy of Dunces, but updated for the year 2000. Underneath it all, he's really just a big kid. This is evidenced by the chapter called "Hush Puppies and Gator Tales," where Karma narrates this zany childhood memory of a gator attack on some children in Busco, his hometown. Very wistful but SO funny. From then on the antics just pile up one after the other. The characters in this book really take the cake. The mother, the sister, the glue-factory brother-in-law. And Lurloo. God, that Lurloo! The prayer-meeting/birthday scene practically made me wet my pants. I still laugh when I think about it, but this Ransom obviously has some problems with religion (who can blame him?) and he nails it without mercy in the formof comedy. The other thing that impressed me about this oddball novel is the intelligence of it. The writing is smooth and rich and definitely invites you into the story. But it's very perceptive and wise, too. Very unique book. Also, another great feature is that Karma jONES'S cartoons appear at key times in the story,(about four of them) and they will make you roll on the floor. Each one has something to say about where karma is at on his journey back home, and the characters or issues he is struggling with. The God/Virgin Mary bit had me snickering, but the SuperDena battle with the Drag Queens took the cake. Don't eat or drink anything while you read this book, because you'll spray food everywhere due to laughing. This book is full of surprises and laughs on literally on every page. Irreverent for sure but oddly endearing. I personally await whatever this author does next with interest.(And I think Creme Brulee is the best name for a stripper I have ever heard)!

Piranha Bites Funny Bone.......2000-05-12

If your sense of humor ranges to the outrageous and irreverent - This is the book for you! I found myself laughing out loud as each "scene" in this book takes anti-hero, Karma Jones, through situations peopled with unforgetable characters and hilarious debacles as he searches for his lost faith. Big girl Dena Overton-Cromp's quest for a film career will touch your heart. Who hasn't been seduced by an info-mercial Queen like Deandra DeLucca and a flight on Amiable Airlines with Miss Jeannie is not so much fiction as fact of life in today's beleaguered skies. Jake Ransom writes with a satiric wit that bites like the title fish and that will leave you questioning the values of the new millennium - after you dry your tears of laughter! The surprise inclusion of fantastic, hilarious "cartoonery" throughout the story make this a truly unique book. Jake Ransom's ability to evoke insight into the human condition, question "values" and press a finger on human "sore spots" - all within the context of a rollicking romp - prove him a novelist (and artist!) of extraordinary talent!
