Book Description
This textbook is intended for those second year undergraduates in science and engineering
who will later need an understanding of electromagnetic theory and quantum mechanics. The classical physics of oscillations and waves is developed at a more advanced level than has been customary for the second year, providing a basis for the quantum mechanics that follows. In this new edition the Green's function is explained, reinforcing the integration of quantum mechanics with classical physics. The text may also form the basis of an "introduction to theoretical physics" for physics majors. The concluding chapters give special attention to topics in current wave physics: nonlinear waves, solitons, and chaotic behavior.
Book Description
This revised and updated second edition of a highly successful text embraces a universal approach to three major developments in classical physics: namely, nonlinear waves, solitons, and chaos. The authors include new material on biology and laser theory, and go on to discuss important recent developments such as soliton metamorphosis. They also offer a new section on a direct method to study transverse instabilities of pulse-like structures. A comprehensive treatment of basic plasma and fluid configurations and instabilities is followed by a study of the relevant nonlinear structures. Additional key features comprise color illustrations of soliton dynamics and end-of-chapter problems. In general, it will be of value to final year undergraduates and beginning graduate students studying fluid dynamics, plasma physics and applied mathematics.
Customer Reviews:
Obtuse and opaque tome.......2006-07-11
The main thrust of this textbook is soliton theory and examples in plasma physics. There is some additional material borrowed from fluid dynamics, but the flavor is still plasmas. This text is very analytic. The derivations are often hard or impossible to follow, and the authors seem to assume general familiarity with plasma physics. I don't have that familiarity, so I found the choice of topics covered and the ensuing theory ad hoc and unmotivated. This is the kind of text where you can spend an enormous amount of time grinding through it, and at the end of the day come away with very litte applicable knowledge.
Chaos is for everyone.......2001-06-22
This book delves far beyond the capabilities of a non-physicist such as myself and is not for everyone. However, I have had a regular tennis game for many years with co-author Professor George Rowlnds of Warwick University (UK). Over beer afterwards, he has often expounded on the importance of choas theory in the real world. I doubt but that a handful of people have the expertise to write a proper review of this book but, as none have done so, I offer this as a poor replacement. Your round, George!

Book Description
These 50 contributions provide a valuable retrospective on research in nonlinear science over the past decade in addition to mapping out new and exciting directions for the future. They are organized around three paradigms that have come to dominate the field: deterministic chaos and nonlinear dynamics, solutions and coherent structures, and patterns and turbulence. Chapters represent broad areas of pure and applied mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering. Many are important reviews of topics in nonlinear science that also contain the latest contributions in that area.
David Campbell is Director of the Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory where Robert E. Ecke is a staff member in the Physics Division and Acting Deputy Director of the Center for Nonlinear Studies, and James M. Hyman is a Group Leader in the Theoretical Physics Division.
Contributions include: Periodic Orbits in Classical and Quantum Chaos. Phase Space Reconstruction of Dynamical Systems. Nonlinear Oscillations in Chemical and Biological Systems. Transport in 2D Maps and in PDEs. Solutions and Integrability. Experiments in Pattern Forming Systems. Spatio-Temporal Patterns in Nonlinear Optics. Nonlinear Waves. Fluid Turbulence.
Book Description
Written in Alwyn Scott’s inimitable style – lucid and accessible – The Nonlinear Universe surveys and explores the explosion of activity in nonlinear science that began in the 1970s and 1980s and continues today. The book explains the wide-ranging implications of nonlinear phenomena for future developments in many areas of modern science, including mathematics, physics, engineering, chemistry, biology, and neuroscience. Arguably as important as quantum theory, modern nonlinear science – and an appreciation of its implications – is essential for understanding scientific developments of the twenty-first century.

An Excellent Choice of Textbook on New Testament Greek.......2007-06-11
I study on my own. This is an excellent grammar book. The book provides clear and succint explanation on basic grammatical rules with illustrated tables for quick review. The tables in each chapter can be referred back for comparison with a new lesson. The exercises on each chapter enable me to apply what has been learned. The student guide provides the answer though there are occassionally minor mistakes such as a city is translated as a church. I have read a couple of other textbooks but I strongly recommends this one.
Definitely a 'Good Starter' NT Greek Book.......2007-04-25
This was our introductory book for our first year of NT Greek. It was the primary book chosen by our illustrious Greek teacher, who has had over 20 years of teaching NT Greek experience under her belt, so our confidence was strong in her choosing this particular book. In review, it was quite good both in format and its use of simple 'English teaching language.' Although I had to look up such terms as 'imperative' and 'deponent.' Perhaps it was also good in that we had a teacher who was there to answer our questions. However, new readers/students might have problems in trying to teach themselves Greek solely from the use of this particular book. Even with the aid of a software program in addition to using this book, there is without a doubt the bound of questions arising.
Most of the lessons, which were a few pages in length, were constructed from previous lesson(s). There were a total of 31 lessons. The first one started with the alphabet and its proper pronounciation, and the last one ended with a translation exercise of 1 John 3:11-18. Most of what you would study in a foreign language were there in Essentials of NT Greek; verbs, nouns, prepositions, conjugations, tenses, etc. What was missing from the book, which I would immediately add if I was the editor or publisher is a 'parsing guide.' I can not be more helpful than to recommend to the pontential buyer and to student of NT Greek to learn how to parse! Learn to parse, you will thank me!
In agreement with previous reviews, you definitely must get the Workbook/Answer Key Essentials of New Testament Greek: A Student's Guide, because while the exercises are decent (some of them are quirky), you won't know the answers because the book doesn't provide them. The negative critique about the Workbook/Answer Key, however, is that when Summer's book gave a particular translation exercise, for example John 1:1-2, the Workbook/Answer Key did not have an answer, it simply referred to 'John 1:1-2' as the answer, which is basically of no help to the student who might get confuse because there are so many Bible translations, and picking the correct 'translation rendering' becomes almost impossible. Not to mention, counterproductive to what the ultimate goal of studying NT Greek is, translating not only properly but correctly. Additionaly, I personally recommended that you supplement your NT Greek studies with other books. Do not solely rely on just one book, and this goes for learning Biblical Hebrew as well. -
This Grammar's method works very well.......2006-12-13
This grammar works very well as a training tool for teaching or studying basic NT Greek. Each lesson is laid out very logically with enough work to help you develop your skill without overwhelming you.
The methodology is very simple. Vocabulary with a simple point and some memorization work to help you grasp the concept for that lesson.
It is easier to teach through than other basic grammars I have looked at, simply because of it's focus.
I would like to say that those who have criticized it for the 8 case system may be correct...but I like the 8 case system because it gives beginning students a stronger intuitive sense that context does drive a lot of meaning in Greek. That is important for students to understand.
It is a great text book, designed to take 2 semesters for an average student.
Learning NT Greek is not hard. You can do it. This text book is one of the better options you have. A different pathway that helps you accomplish the same task is Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek. I happen to like the approach of Summers a little better. Both of those two Grammars are high on my list. I also recommend FDB (Funk's Grammar) and A.T. Robertson.
Finally, the verb chart is handy to have, but not necessary since they are now standard in most software programs for NT Greek...including BibleWorks 7.0 which I have and love.
I hope you enjoy Summers textbook as much as I have.
Excellent Resource.......2006-12-10
Learning New Testament Greek is not for the faint of heart. There is a tremendous amount of memorization (besides vocabulary items there are according to some estimates approximately 500 forms of the Greek verb) involved along with a myriad of rules to learn, all of which seem to have exceptions.
The book eases the beginner into NT Greek with 31 chapters (158 pages of text). The 1st two are alphabet and pronunciation. Basic verbs are next and then common nouns and noun structures. Each chapter has vocabulary items (by the end of the reader will have been exposed to every word used fifty times or more in the GNT) and very helpful practice exercises.
As one reviewer states the "optative" is not discussed, but, this is in keeping with the books basic approach "to be functional and practical".
This book is best studied under the tutelage of a teacher but it could be useful to someone doing independent learning.
The book is only introductory (as are all beginner textbooks). Reading through and comprehending ALL of the book's precepts, the student will only be prepared to BEGIN a study of the Greek New Testament.
I have read and studied nearly a dozen beginning [New Testament] Greek textbooks including Mounce, Croy, Machen, etc., and believe Essentials of New testament Greek is the best of the bunch.
Nicely Organized.......2006-12-06
This is a fairly small volume (about 200 pages), but lots of great content. It is organized in a maner that builds on itself and doesn't expect the student to have prior knowledge of the greek language. This is probably the best textbook I had in my entire college experience.
As some of the others have said the examples and exercises are limited. This is true. (Remember, only 200 pages) I definitely recommend the workbook and/or additional resources. (Computer programs are an option for students today--although I haven't personally tried any of them.) This book is a must for any beginning biblical greek student.
Book Description
An excellent tool for students of New Testament Greek to maintain the skills taught in first-year Greek.
Customer Reviews:
Useful Exercise Material.......2007-09-16
This is a pretty good workbook for its stated purpose. I worked through Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek on my own, and when I was done I found this book to be at a very good level for practicing and maintaining what I had learned.
Probably the chief drawback to this workbook is that it encourages the practice of thinking of the Greek text in terms of Englishing the text rather than actually trying to understand the Greek directly. As I worked through it, after producing my "translation" I tried to go back and re-read the Greek to see how much I could understand without thinking it in English.
There were a few (but just a few) cases where unfamiliar vocabulary wasn't defined as described in the preface. There were more than a few cases where verbs were presented for parsing in completely unfamiliar forms, so that rather than practicing parsing one is actually learning a new principle part. That's useful, obviously, but a little frustrating. I would have rather had a footnote hinting at the lexical form.
My biggest complaint about this book is that the binding on my copy was terrible. The pages kept falling out. By the time I finished, the last page was the only page still attached to the cover.
Excellent Study Aid.......2001-04-25
This book is perfect for any student (Highschool or College) who wishes to preserve what was learned during the school year. It contains 12 weeks worth of daily reading passages and parsing questions. The length of the reading passages only require about 15-20 minutes a day and the 3 parsing questions are perfect for paradigm maintenance. Each chapter has a small vocabulary list which is easy to memorize in a small amount of time. Also, students can check the back of the book which contains full English translations of the daily passages. It would be helpful if it had a comprehensive Vocabulary list in the back but, if a word is forgotten, it is not that difficult to look through the lesson lists. Overall, this book is a terrific collection of daily 20 minute studies.
Book Description
The story of a man in love with a place, a woman, and a dream.
Tom Stone went to Greece one summer to write a novel -- and stayed twenty-two years. On Patmos, he fell in love with Danielle, a beautiful French painter. His novel completed and sold, he decided to stay a little longer.
Seven idyllic years later, they left Patmos for Crete. When a Patmian friend Theológos called and offered him a summer partnership in his beach tavérna, The Beautiful Helen, Stone jumped at the chance -- much to the dismay of his wife, who cautioned him not to forget the old adage about Greeks bearing gifts.
Her warning was well-founded: when back on Patmos, Stone quickly discovered that he was no longer a friend or patron but a competitor. He learned hard lessons about the Greeks' skill at bargaining and business while reluctantly coming to the realization that Theológos's offer of a partnership was indeed a Trojan horse.
Featuring Stone's recipes, including his own Chicken Retsina and the ultimate moussaka, The Summer of My Greek Tavérna is as much a love story as it is the grand, humorous, and sometimes bittersweet adventures of an American pursuing his dreams in a foreign land, a modern-day innocent abroad.
Customer Reviews:
Very enjoyable read.......2006-11-13
The writer has a very straightforward style that I truly enjoyed. The fact that this was a true story kept my interest and made me put the Greek Isles high on the list of places to visit in the next few years.
The author's sense of adventure and risk taking appeals to me.
At the end of this book, I felt that i had acquired a good bit of knowledge of the physical aspects of the islands and even more so about the culture.
A bittersweet summer on the Isle of Patmos .......2006-07-24
You laugh and then you cry when you read this bittersweet memoir. The Summer of my Greek Taverna is a funny, poignant saga of a naive American, whose Greek friend, Theologos, offers him a "summer partnership" in The Beautiful Helen Taverna, located on the small Aegean Island of Patmos. Although his wife and Greek friends caution him to be aware of "Greeks bearing gifts," Stone jumps at the offer. His life is never the same, arriving home at night, at three or four in the morning, completely spent, with no time for sex or even a cuddle, and up at dawn to start another day at the restaurant, only to have his partner swindle him of the profits.
Stone captures the essense of the Greek people and writes lovingly of them, the good ones and the not-so-good ones. My Taverna is reminiscent of many excellent books of American expatriates living in foreign countries, all with their own unique experiences. Memoirs of an American Housewife in Japan is one of many. In spite of his trials and tribulations, Tom Stone survives his ordeal and returns to the states. He opens his own successful restaurant in Southern California. At the end the book, Stone lists "The Menu of the Beautiful Helen," with 20 recipes of his favorite Greek dishes in full detail. If the story doesn't stimulate you, the recipes will. A good read, bon appetit. Yassou.
breath of fresh air.......2005-08-30
Reading these little expat memoirs used to be a pleasure, but now there are so many self-congratulatory accounts that they've long since begun to pall. Greek Taverna is a welcome exception. Stone manages to convey the essence of Greek island life, geography, and ambience without attempting to convince the reader that life in those parts is idyllic and carefree. Indeed, Tom and his family encounter as many problems and stumbling blocks as they might have in NYC, as well as enjoying the beauty and simplicity (all is relative). Reading his experiences is as refreshing as a dip in the Aegean. Bravo to Tom Stone for his honesty, sense of humor, and willingness to remain in Greece despite the bursting of the bubble of his dream.
Stone's book on Greece is right on target in every way.......2005-01-25
As a Greek-American who was born, and lives in the US, but also lived in Greece for 12 years, I am always very interested in reading the experiences of expatriates, especially those from the US. I took some time to read through the other reviews here, especially focusing on the ones with negative things to say. I must say this, because I like to keep my reviews brief: Tom Stone did not produce the perfect book here, nor do I think we should expect that from him---what he did do was absolutely capture both the Greek mentality and spirit, the beauty of the land and its culture, and the very difficult divide in which foreigners who live in Greece full-time find themselves. I highly recommend this book not just for Greek diaspora who want to wax nostalgic of the mother country, but for ANY American heading over for a visit, if not a longer stay. I recently recommended this book to two proteges of mine who were headed to Greece for a short stay, and a semester abroad respectively, and both told me upon their returns that it was a priceless learning tool which enhanced their visits, as well as a very enjoyable read. I cant think of any higher recommendation than that of didacticism and real world, in-country experience. Well done, Mr Stone!
The Summer of my Greek Taverna.......2003-03-18
Save your money and read "Extra Virgin" instead.
In a book about someone opening a greek restaurant, it takes the author half the pages to even begin cooking his first meal. Much of the book is given to the author's whining about money, unfair deals and his struggles.
And to Tom (the author), thanks for reminding us that you sleep in the nude. That added so much to the book.
No laugh out loud moments here and the recipes are just really filler to pad the book.

DISAPPOINTED.......2007-06-28
I was really looking forward to reading this new series, but was very disappointed when I read the first book.
The writing left me not caring at all about the characters, and didn't draw me into the story at all. The chemistry was also a key component that was missing.
I won't bother to give a summary of the book since it has already been done, but spend your valuable time on another book instead.
a terrific investigative romantic suspense .......2007-06-11
Private investigator Kit Angelis is leaving for the day when trouble right out of one of the novels he writes enters. He does need his paranormal gift to know this blond bombshell is a capital T. She is holding a discharged gun, a ton of cash, and a wedding dress, and her clothing is dripping blood. She tells him she cannot remember who she is and how she got in this condition. He asks her why him; she shows him her other possession, his business card.
Although he knows she might be a killer, Kit agrees to help the woman. He even ignores the SOP that they should notify the police. Soon they are on the lam from thugs who want her dead and the cops who want at least to question her. As they begin to uncover the truth, the danger mounts.
The first of Cara Summers' Tall, Dark and Dangerously Hot! trilogy is a terrific investigative romantic suspense due to the mixed feelings and signals coming from Kit to the woman in distress that he rescues. He wonders if she is a runaway bride who killed her groom while fighting his attraction the mystery female. Fans will appreciate the adventures of the P.I. and the bride in love, murder, and mayhem while looking forward to the tales of the cop and the DA to follow.

Book Description
J.C.B. Petropoulos examines the description of midsummer in Hesiod's "Works and Days", explores modern Greek agrarian practices and relevant folk beliefs, proverbs, symbols, and songs, and cautiously attempts a "backward extrapolation". With the help of comparative ethnographic models, readers will not only better appreciate the seasonal settings of Hesiod's harvest and its midsummer aftermath, but also will obtain a provocative sidelight into the local song traditions and general lore that underlie the famous passage and Alcaeus's poem.
