      Book Description

Hilbert's talk at the second International Congress of 1900 in Paris marked the beginning of a new era in the calculus of variations. A development began which, within a few decades, brought tremendous success, highlighted by the 1929 theorem of Ljusternik and Schnirelman on the existence of three distinct prime closed geodesics on any compact surface of genus zero, and the 1930/31 solution of Plateau's problem by Douglas and Radó. The book gives a concise introduction to variational methods and presents an overview of areas of current research in the field. The third edition gives a survey on new developments in the field. References have been updated and a small number of mistakes have been rectified.

        Book Description

The study of shape optimization problems encompasses a wide spectrum of academic research with numerous applications to the real world. In this work these problems are treated from both the classical and modern perspectives and target a broad audience of graduate students in pure and applied mathematics, as well as engineers requiring a solid mathematical basis for the solution of practical problems.

        Key topics and features:

        * Presents foundational introduction to shape optimization theory

        * Studies certain classical problems: the isoperimetric problem and the Newton problem involving the best aerodynamical shape, and optimization problems over classes of convex domains

        * Treats optimal control problems under a general scheme, giving a topological framework, a survey of "gamma"-convergence, and problems governed by ODE

        * Examines shape optimization problems with Dirichlet and Neumann conditions on the free boundary, along with the existence of classical solutions

        * Studies optimization problems for obstacles and eigenvalues of elliptic operators

        * Poses several open problems for further research

        * Substantial bibliography and index

Driven by good examples and illustrations and requiring only a standard knowledge in the calculus of variations, differential equations, and functional analysis, the book can serve as a text for a graduate course in computational methods of optimal design and optimization, as well as an excellent reference for applied mathematicians addressing functional shape optimization problems.

            Book Description

This book is a short introductory text to variational techniques with applications to differential equations. It presents a sampling of topics in critical point theory with applications to existence and multiplicity of solutions in nonlinear problems involving ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and partial differential equations (PDEs).

Five simple problems in ODEs which illustrate existence of solutions from a variational point of view are introduced in the first chapter. These problems set the stage for the topics covered, including minimization, deformation results, the mountain-pass theorem, the saddle-point theorem, critical points under constraints, a duality principle, critical points in the presence of symmetry, and problems with lack of compactness. Each topic is presented in a straightforward manner, and followed by one or two illustrative applications.

The concise, straightforward, user-friendly approach of this textbook will appeal to graduate students and researchers interested in differential equations, analysis, and functional analysis.

                    Book Description

In the rapidly developing area of nonlinear theory of differential equations, many important results have been obtained by the use of nonlinear functional analysis based on topological and variational methods. The survey papers presented in this volume represent the current state of the art in the subject. The methods outlined in this book can be used to obtain new results concerning the existence, uniqueness, multiplicity, and bifurcation of the solutions of nonlinear boundary value problems for ordinary and partial differential equations. The contributions to this volume are from well known mathematicians, and every paper contained in this book can serve both as a source of reference for researchers working in differential equations and as a starting point for those wishing to pursue research in this direction. With research reports in the field typically scattered in many papers within various journals, this book provides the reader with recent results in an accessible form.

“Noker's fictional satire not only pokes fun at censored videos, but also lampoons current issues … and turns political pundits into punch lines.”

                      —Kelsey Blackwell, Salt Lake Magazine

When the entrepreneurial owner of a struggling video rental store in Provo, Utah, offers R- and PG-rated movies with the sex, violence, and profanity edited out—earning a new rating of F (for Family)—his profits skyrocket.

Things take a dangerous turn when a customer known as Twitchy Guy brings in a box of old family movies, demanding that his estranged wife be edited out. The proposal seems extremely odd, but the offered payment is too generous to refuse. After much of the editing is done, Twitchy Guy decides to “delete” his wife from his life—literally.

Managing a video store swiftly leads to violence, murder, and too many people posing for too many cameras.

Rated F is an entertaining satire about political correctness gone too far.

I liked this book a lot. I like anything that takes a fresh perspective on things that are close to me. I was born and raised in Utah, so the subject matter of the book is relevant to my life and I can relate to much of it. I encourage anybody living in Utah to read it. A quick, intelligent, entertaining read.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining & Witty, a real fine piece of work!.......2006-04-09

I had heard about this book from a friend who expressed how much he absolutely loved it. He actually kept talking about it so much that i was nearly forced to go purchase it! :)

I was concerned when I saw the steep price of $12.95 and crossed my fingers when i pushed the "Purchase" button.

Needless to say, my money did not go to waste. My wife is starting to read the book in the other room right now in fact. I don't usually rate literature that i've read but i felt impressed to do so with Rated F.

The characters are painted so vividly that I swear I know each and every one of them. I'm a busy person and I have quite a bit of things to do; kids to feed, lawns to mow, but when a novel can grip you and suck you in until the very last word... that's what I call a true masterpiece.

                      5 out of 5 stars Absoltely amazing!.......2006-01-08

I loved every bit of this book. I'm not quite sure about the previous review of this book, as i found it very funny and entertaining. Noker takes you through an absolutely amazing adventure as the owner of a small town video store gets involved in some scandalous activity.

Go for this book. Personally, i loved every minute of it. Couldn't put it down.

1 out of 5 stars Even censorship can't hide bad.......2005-09-22

Normally I wouldn't write a review just to bash a book, but I bought the book on the strength of the amazon.com reviewers. I felt compelled to warn anyone doing the same to seriously reconsider. I love Palahniuk's work, and, judging from the reviews, I thought this would be something similar from a fresh perspective. The book begins with the narrator staring down the barrel of a gun - just like Fight Club. The narrator then proceeds to make snide remarks about the situation - just like Fight Club. The narrator says "it's all because of..." and then "But let's back it up just a little." The reader is then led on a flashback tour leading up to the gun - just like Fight Club. The problem is, this isn't Fight Club. At best, this is an *aspiring* author trying his best to make a Fight Club ripoff. Rated F fails mostly because of its one-dimensional characters; the narrator isn't even likable. The author chose to make his narrator obese and then spend half of his time making fat comments or defending his weight issues. I got the feeling it was supposed to generate humor, but the jokes fall flat and the arguments were full of holes. Fight Club let its narrator observe, while Rated F never shut him up. As I read through the book, listening to the narrator jump to conclusions, insist on his intelligence, and insult everyone else, I pictured him more and more as the kind of loser who desperately seeks attention and acceptance. But instead of getting pummeled like he deserves, the narrator is completely vindicated in the end.

What I like most about Palahniuk's books is that he introduces you to zany situations in order to uncover some insight into regular life. Noker doesn't know how to do this. If you want to read about a mundane experiment with foolish and one-dimensional characters where the only thing discovered is the annoying narrator's own "intelligence," go for Rated F. Otherwise, stick to Palahniuk or other modern authors.

                          Description:
This study examines the health status of young people in Slovakia. Six subjective health indicators (self-rated health, long-standing illness, vitality, mental health, long-term well-being over the last year and occurrence of health complaints during the previous month) were used to assess the health status of three age groups: first grade secondary school students (mean age 15.9 years), third grade students (mean age 17.8 years) and secondary school leavers (mean age 19.6 years). Females rated their health worse than males on all six indicators (most of these differences were statistically significant). For males, younger age was associated with better self-rated health, less long-standing illness and higher levels of long-term well-being during the previous year. For females, the age differences were more complicated: third grade females reported significantly worse health status in terms of vitality, long-standing illness and number of health complaints than the other two age groups. An analysis of health status by educational level (attendance at or completion of grammar, technical or apprentice school), revealed that grammar school third grade females reported worse health than all other respondents on all six indicators. The third grade of grammar school in Slovakia puts particular stresses on students and, since it has been suggested that females may react more negatively than males to stressful events, this may contribute to their more negative self reports.

                            Description:
In this study, novice drivers' safe driving performance was investigated in a prospective design. Driving performance during a 11/2h driving session was rated both by the drivers and their instructors. The results indicated that a model based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour predicted both self-reported performance (50% of variance in general assessments and 33% of variance in estimates of driving errors/violations explained) and instructors' general assessments (17% variance explained). Instructors' assessments of driving errors and violations committed during the session was the only outcome not successfully explained by the model (0% variance explained). The results indicate that self-reports on behavioural criteria are not without merit in tests concerning the contribution of social-cognitive determinants to safe driving. Self-efficacy emerged as the main predictor of performance. Interventions targeting novice drivers, could therefore emphasize mastery experiences in order to facilitate safe driving behaviour.

                              Description:
The present paper reports a series of six studies, each investigating the power of self-rated analytical, creative, and practical abilities for predicting one of six individual-difference variables: cognitive development, modes of thinking, career interests, learning approaches, thinking styles, and personality traits. Contributing to the composition of 18 samples, the 5019 (1904 males and 3115 females) university students were from three cultural groups: Hong Kong, mainland China, and the United States. Each of the six variables was assessed by a self-report inventory. Results indicated that in all three cultures, students who rated themselves higher on the ability scales tended to score significantly higher on the individual-difference variable scales that denote positive values, such as higher cognitive-developmental levels and creativity-generating thinking styles. Moreover, students who rated themselves lower on the ability scales tended to score significantly higher on the individual-difference variable scales that indicate negative values such as a lower cognitive-developmental level and norm-favoring thinking styles. Implications of these findings are discussed in relation to both research and education.

                                Description:
The objective was to evaluate the associations between older persons' health status and their social integration and social networks (family, children, friends and community), in two French-speaking, Canadian community dwelling populations aged 65 years and over, using the conceptual framework proposed by Berkman and Thomas. Data were taken from two 1995 surveys conducted in the city of Moncton (n=1518) and the Montreal neighbourhood of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve (n=1500). Social engagement (a cumulative index of social activities), networks consisting of friends, family and children and social support were measured using validated scales. Multiple logistic regressions based on structured inclusion of potentially mediating variables were fitted to estimate the associations between health status and social networks. Self-rated health was better for those with a high level of social integration and a strong network of friends in both locations. In addition, in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve family and children networks were positively associated with good health, though the effect of friend networks was attenuated in the presence of disability, good social support from children was associated with good health. Age, sex and education were included as antecedent variables; smoking, alcohol consumption, exercise, locus of control and depressive symptoms were considered intermediary variables between social networks and health. In conclusion, social networks, integration and support demonstrated unique positive associations with health. The nature of these associations may vary between populations and cultures.
