    Book Description

This text introduces the theoretical framework for describing the quark-gluon plasma, an important new state of matter. The first part of the book is a self-contained introduction to relativistic thermal field theory. Topics include the path integral approach, the real and imaginary time formalisms, fermion fields and gauge fields at finite temperature. The author illustrates useful techniques such as the evaluation of frequency sums and the use of cutting rules. The second part of the book is devoted to recent developments, and gives a detailed account of collective excitations (bosonic and fermionic), showing how they give rise to energy scales that imply a reorganization of perturbation theory. The author also explains the relation with kinetic theory. He works out in detail applications to processes that occur in heavy ion collisions and in astrophysics. Each chapter ends with exercises and a guide to the literature. Graduate students and researchers in nuclear, particle, and astrophysics will benefit from this book.

      Book Description

A fresh look at the phenomenon of mode conversion with tunneling.

This volume provides a thorough analysis of plasma wave resonance absorption--a mode conversion process used in wave heating and diagnostics worldwide. The only book to incorporate mode conversion into a general treatment of plasma physics and plasma waves, it describes a broad range of applications and develops methods of mode conversion that are more advanced and precise than others in use today. This monograph presents the complete theory underlying the diagnostic implications of the process, combining estimates of tunneling, reflection, conversion, and absorption with emission. It surveys two decades' worth of developments in the field and:
      * Brings together a wealth of information previously scattered in the professional literature
      * Details numerous analytical and numerical results, many of which are published here for the first time
      * Proves the surprising result that the phenomena of tunneling and absorption are independent
      * Shows the link between the absorption and emission processes associated with resonances
      * Features dozens of illustrations, as well as an extensive bibliography and references
      * Appends a collection of mathematical formulas useful in plasma physics
      * Offers via e-mail a variety of Fortran codes covering the examples in the book.

Theory of Mode Conversion and Tunneling in Inhomogeneous Plasmas is an essential reference for researchers working in plasma physics, space plasma physics, and fusion energy fields, and for anyone developing codes in plasma wave heating modeling. Its tutorial approach makes it invaluable for graduate students taking courses in plasma waves--whether in physics, electrical engineering, or nuclear engineering.

                Book Description

Physics of Thin Films is one of the longest running continuing series in thin film science, consisting of 25 volumes since 1963. The series contains quality studies of the properties of various thin films materials and systems. In order to be able to reflect the development of today's science and to cover all modern aspects of thin films, the series, starting with Volume 20, has moved beyond the basic physics of thin films. It now addresses the most important aspects of both inorganic and organic thin films, in both their theoretical and their technological aspects.

Starting with Volume 30, the title of the series, Thin Films, is being changed to Thin Films and Nanostructures. We feel that this new title
reflects more accurately the rapidly growing inclusion of research and
development efforts on nanostructures, especially in relation to novel
                solid-state device formats

5 out of 5 stars Authoritative, detailed account of atomic physics for fusion.......1997-11-18

The edge region of magnetically confined, thermonuclear fusion plasmas constitutes the physical interface between the hot, fully ionized core and the material walls of the containment vessel. The physical conditions of the edge plasma define the boundary conditions for the overall core plasma dynamics and the characteristics of the transmitted energy and particle fluxes to the walls. Control of the physical conditions in the plasma edge is essential for achieving the desired thermonuclear performance (burn characteristics, energy confinement mode, plasma purity, etc.) and for satisfying the fusion reactor engineering design criteria (tolerable power loads on plasma-facing materials, power and particle exhaust, impurity control, etc.). Atomic and molecular collision processes in the relatively cold plasma edge region, as well as plasma-wall interaction processes, play a decisive role in determining the physical conditions of the boundary plasma. The knowledge of quantitative characteristics of these processes is one of the key elements in understanding the plasma edge properties and behaviour and in establishing control over the plasma edge conditions. The aim of the present volume is to provide a comprehensive review and quantitative information on the most important gas-phase atomic and molecular processes in the edge plasmas of toroidal fusion devices, particularly tokamaks with divertors. The book contains 16 chapters, each introducing the reader to the basic physics of a particular class of processes, briefly reviewing the current research as well as providing an extensive, up-to-date quantitative overview, including cross sections and reaction rates. The selection of the interacting species is guided by their abundance in the edge plasmas of presently operating large fusion devices, also taking into account the likely plasma edge composition of next-generation fusion reactors. The quantitative information is presented in a form which facilitates its direct use in plasma edge modelling and/or plasma diagnostics. The elementary processes covered in this volume are: radiative processes of, - and spectroscopic data for, the fusion edge species; electron-impact elastic and inelastic (excitation, ionization, recombination) collision processes with plasma edge hydrogen and impurity atoms and ions; electron-molecule (including molecular ion) collision processes involving excitation, ionization and recombination through both the direct and dissociative channels; elastic momentum transfer processes among hydrogen and helium ions, neutrals and isotopes; excitation, ionization and charge exchange processes in ion-atom (molecule) collisions; and particle and reactive ion-molecule collision processes. Separate chapters provide information on the electron-impact processes involving vibrationally excited hydrogen molecules and molecular ions including their isotope versions; energy and angular distributions of secondary electrons produced in electron-impact ionization, and the collision processes involving hydrocarbons. The plasma impurities for which the electron-impact and heavy-particle impact collision information is provided in the book include: He, Be, B, C, O, Ne, Si, and the metallic impurities from the medium- and high-Z range: Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Mo, and W. All chapters are comprehensive, self-contained and written by active and prominent experts in the field of their topic. This is the first book that specifically addresses the atomic and molecular processes in fusion edge plasmas in a complete manner and provides extensive up-to-date quantitative information on their collisional characteristics. The information in this book is valuable not only for understanding the influence of atomic and molecular processes on the behavior of fusion edge plasmas, but also for actual physics research on edge plasmas, such as modelling and diagnostics. To the broader topic of magnetic confinement the physical processes discussed in this book derive their importance from the strong and diverse thermodynamic forces and the relatively large volume fraction characterizing the plasma edge. It is hoped that this publication will enable the fusion research community to further the integration of atomic and molecular physics considerations into magnetic confinement analysis.

                      Book Description

Playing golf at their private club early one morning, four retired men advance to the tee of the fifth hole.

Bill Fisher and Mike Duer are partners. The remaining two are Bob Smith and Paul Brown.

This is their regular pee stop. To speed up the process, they use both the Men's and the Ladies side of the small out-building nearby.

Bob Smith finds the dead body of Louise Pearsall, a club member, in the Ladies Rest Room. He pretends to not recognize her.

The four deliberate when to report the incident. Not wanting the course closed and interrupt their match, they take a vote whether to wait 'til the match is over before reporting. They vote to go right to Paul Brown's home to call 911.

The local law enforcement team, led by Sheriff Pat Brazel, begins investigating. Pat is assisted by the Coroner, John Goodall, Deputy Maynard Sawyer, and Prosecutor Warren Campbell.

After assembling in the clubhouse, the Golf Pro, the Club Manager, Bob Smith, Brazel, Sawyer and Goodall, are all transport by golf cart out to the fifth tee.

The identity of the deceased is officially established, and the Sheriff phones Wallgoods Mortuary to collect the remains and take it to the Morgue. Doctor Goodall will do an autopsy. He estimates Louise died about nine p.m. the previous evening.

What had brought her out on the golf course after dark?
