Book Description
Shuji Nakamura's development of a blue semiconductor laser on the basis of GaN opens the way for a host of new applications of semiconductor lasers. The wavelengths can be tuned by controlling the composition. For the first time it is possible to produce lasers with various wavelengths, ranging from red through yellow and green to blue, in one substrate material. This fact, together with their high efficiency, makes GaN-based lasers very useful for a wide spectrum of applications. The second edition of this basic book on GaN-based devices has been updated and significantly extended. It includes a survey of worldwide research on GaN, as well as Nakamura's latest important developments. The reader finds a careful introduction to the physics and properties of GaN. The main part of the book deals with the production and characteristics of GaN LDs and LEDs. To complete the spectrum of applications, GaN power devices are also described.

Not the complete story - - but certainly a useful book.......2007-03-23
Subtitled 'The Complete Story' - it is not - it's just the early years of the story. Whilst this is a very instructive book and a great introduction to the blue laser diode story and technical detail, plenty of others contributed significantly to the blue laser diode story -- but that is not much of what you read in this 'bio' of Nakamura-san. At least you get some brief references to other teams' contributions.
The book reads like a set of 'cut-and-pastes' from Nakamura and his team's research papers - which is no bad thing. It's certainly good to have so much really useful material in one place.
Greatest book on the new Blue Semiconductor Lasers!.......2000-06-25
This book is by far, the best book I have read about the latest Blue Laser Technology. I give the content and organization of information my highest regard.

This is a new generation book. Most books available in the field cover the whole history of the X-ray scattering theories and applications. Then, specific applications that are very important in our days for industries and scientific researches are not properly treated. This book does begin where other related books have finished. The issues covered are not found anywhere else together, in a same volume, as they are here. It is fundamental to the new era of materials characterization.

By the end of the 1970s, crystalline lasers were widely used in science, engineering, medicine, and technology. The types of lasers used have continued to grow in number to include newly discovered crystalline hosts, previously known compounds generating at other spectral wavelengths, and broadband tunable stimulated emission. This has led to the creation of an extremely promising new generation of crystalline lasers that are both highly efficient and more reliable. The major part of this book is devoted to describing multilevel operating laser schemes for stimulated emission excitation in insulating crystals doped with lanthanide ions. The first part of Crystalline Lasers deals with the history of the physics and spectroscopy of insulating laser crystals. The chapters in the second part of the book present results from the study of Stark-energy levels of generating ions in laser crystals and their radiative and nonradiative intermanifold transition characteristics. This section includes extensive tabular data and reference information. Popular and novel operating schemes of crystalline lasers are covered in Part 3. In the chapters in the fourth part of the book, the newest technologies in the physics and engineering of crystalline lasers are considered. The results of investigations into laser action under selective excitations, miniature crystalline lasers, and the properties of nonlinear activated laser crystals are presented and analyzed. Crystalline Lasers summarizes and reviews the results of many years of research and studies of activator ions and multilevel operating laser schemes, and discusses exciting prospects of using these systems to create new types of crystalline lasers. This book will be of use to laser scientists and engineers, physicists, and chemical engineers.

An entire chapter is concerned with instrumentation. Another on the interpretation of diffraction patterns enables the reader to master all stages in the process. The book ends with a long chapter in which numerous applications concerned with the characterization of crystal defects are examined and analyzed.

I was enchanted by this book. The author has a wonderful sense of humor. She drew me into the book with her charm then plucked my heart strings with the ending. I read the book in one sitting because I couldn't put it down (I was almost late picking my son up from soccer practice!)

April's Trust is a must read for anyone interested in a great story filled with wit, suspense, and an intriguing plot! Even more so for anyone with a love for horses, or animals of any kind. Amy Rowen has deepened her skills with this latest endeavor by fully drawing the reader in to a sometimes comical, sometimes sad, utterly unusual, but somehow totally believable story. I was not anticipating the extent to which I was captivated by the characters in the plot, the connection that can and does happen between people and animals, and by the character evolution throughout the pages. The real surprise comes at the end, which at once had me crying, then smiling, then finally in awe of the talent of Amy Rowen as a writer when I "got it". Superbly done.

The 2007 version of this book is measurably thicker than this 2004 version. I wish the Tax law reflected that! Our office thinks this book should be titled Tax Opinions not Tax Facts, as there are so many disclaimers stating this is just our opinion. Still, a valuable reference for many.
