    Book Description

Almost 30 years after the first reports on surface-enhanced Raman signals, the phenomenon of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is now well established. Yet, explaining the enhancement of a spectroscopic signal by fouteen orders of magnitude continues to attract the attention of physicists and chemists alike. And, at the same time and rapidly growing, SERS is becoming a very useful spectroscopic tool with exciting applications in many fields. SERS gained particular interest after single-molecule Raman spectroscopy had been demonstrated. This bookl summarizes and discusses present theoretical approaches that explain the phenomenon of SERS and reports on new and exciting experiments and applications of the fascinating spectroscopic effect.

        Description:
In this work, the contributions of cationic and elemental gold on roughened gold substrates to surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of polypyrrole (PPy) films were first investigated. First, a gold substrate was roughened by a triangular wave oxidation-reduction cycle (ORC) in an aqueous solution containing 0.1M KCl. Then, the roughened gold substrate was further reduced by applying a cathodic potential for a fixed time to control the quantity of unreduced cationic Au on the roughened Au substrate. The result indicates that the content of cationic Au is responsible for the improved SERS of PPy electrodeposited on this roughened Au substrate. This phenomenon can be attributed to the interfacial charge transfer from PPy to the roughened Au substrate by the aid of cationic Au.

            Description:
A surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based procedure was investigated for potential applications in the direct identification of selected anthraquinone dyes on works of art objects. The simplicity and effectiveness of this procedure was demonstrated in a proof-of-concept experiment. A microscopic fragment containing alizarin or lac dye was removed from a painting. A layer of silver nanoparticles was thermally evaporated directly on the fragment to induce SERS effect. SERS spectra were collected directly from the Ag-nanoparticle-coated sample fragments with a Raman microscope. Based on their characteristic SERS spectra, the presence of alizarin or lac dye in the sample fragments can be detected. The applicability of this procedure for potential applications in minimally invasive analysis of color layer from artwork objects is discussed. Finally, the thickness of the Ag nanoparticle layer was optimized.

              Description:
Inositol hexaphosphate (IP"6) was proposed as an environmentally friendly reagent to prevent metal surface from corrosion through a self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) method. In situ surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopic investigations revealed that the self-assembling of IP"6 at the roughened copper surface in a Na-salt phytic acid solution took two steps involving firstly self-cleaning the surface and then forming IP"6 monolayers. The features of the IP"6 monolayers were evaluated by the time-dependent Raman spectroscopic measurement, Raman mapping and electrochemical polarization experiments. Based on the calculation results for vibration spectrum of IP"6 molecule with PM3 method, a model for IP"6 molecule adsorbed chemically on the roughened copper via two co-planar phosphate moieties was suggested. The copper surface with the IP"6 monolayers presents the inhibiting action in a 0.1molL^-^1 KC1 solution but the relative inhibition efficiency is of 41.2% because of the water co-adsorption.

                Description:
In this work, the effect of supplemental LiClO"4 electrolytes in KCl solutions used in roughening silver substrates by electrochemical triangular-wave oxidation-reduction cycles (ORC) on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) was first investigated. To prepare SERS-active substrates by ORC procedures, electrolytes of KCl were generally employed. In contrast, LiClO"4 ones were unsuitable for producing SERS-active substrates. Encouragingly, SERS of Rhodamine 6G (R6G) adsorbed on the roughened Ag substrate prepared in an aqueous solution containing KCl and LiClO"4 electrolytes exhibits a higher intensity by one order of magnitude, as compared with that of R6G adsorbed on a roughened Ag substrate prepared in a solution only containing KCl. Further investigations indicate that the oxidation state of Cl on the roughened Ag substrate demonstrates decided effects on this improved SERS.

In this work, the effects of preparation conditions used in roughening silver substrates by electrochemical triangular-wave oxidation-reduction cycles (ORC) on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) were first investigated. The optimum roughening conditions for obtaining strongest SERS of Rhodamine 6G (R6G) are as follows. Ag electrodes were cycled in deoxygenated aqueous solutions containing 0.1M NaCl from -0.3 to +0.2V versus Ag/AgCl at 25mVs^-^1 for five scans. The SERS of R6G adsorbed on this optimum procedure-prepared roughened Ag substrate exhibits a higher intensity by one order of magnitude, as compared with that of R6G adsorbed on a normally roughened Ag substrate.

                    Description:
An approach to prepare novel glass-coated gold core-shell nanoparticles embedded with Raman active molecules has been developed. This strategy eliminates the need of a coupling agent and enables efficient embedding of most of commercially available Raman active dyes, even those with weak affinity to a gold surface. Our experiments have demonstrated the hypothesis that the glass encapsulation chemistry is based on the reaction between silanol groups hydrolyzed by TEOS and citrate anion groups adsorbed onto the gold nanoparticles leading to the formation of a silica layer through further reaction with silanol groups of other hydrolyzed TEOS. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated the potential of these novel nanoparticls as Raman tags in ultrasensitive immunoassays for human IgG antigen with a detection limit of 4.9ng/ml.

                      Description:
The synthesis of non-spherical spike-like gold-silver alloy nanoparticles on platinum substrates was first developed by sonoelectrochemical methods in this study. First, a silver substrate was roughened by a triangular-wave oxidation-reduction cycle (ORC) in an aqueous solution containing 0.1M HCl. Silver-containing complexes were found in the solution after the ORC treatment. Then a gold substrate was subsequently roughened by the similar ORC treatment in the same silver complexes-containing solution. After this procedure, Au- and Ag-containing complexes were left in the solution. Subsequently, the Au working electrode was immediately replaced by a Pt electrode. A cathodic overpotential was applied under controlled sonication and slight stirring to synthesize Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles on the Pt substrate. Encouragingly, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of Rhodamine 6G on the Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles-deposited Pt substrate exhibits a higher intensity by eight-fold of magnitude and a better resolution, as compared to that obtained on the Au nanoparticles-deposited Pt substrate.

                      Book Description

"The sand beach that stretches nearly a mile beyond the [Kalaupapa] wharf was always laid smooth by the tide. Hansen's disease plays havoc with feet, ulcerating them, crippling them. Such feet walk poorly. And in sand they cannot walk at all..."

When Henry Nalaielua was diagnosed with Hansen's disease in 1936 and taken from his home and family, he began a journey of exile that led him to Kalaupapa--the remote settlement with the tragic history on the Hawaiian island of Moloka'i. This is Henry's story--an unforgettable memoir of the boy who grew to build a full and joyous life at Kalaupapa, and still calls it home today. No Footprints in the Sand is one of only a few memoirs ever shared with the public by a Kalaupapa patient. Its intimacy and candor make it, in the words of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet W.S. Merwin, "a rare and precious human document." Nalaielua's story is an inspiring one; despite exile, physical challenges and the severing of family ties, he has faced life -- as an artist, musician and historian -- with courage, honesty, hope and humor.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, rare story. Illuminating.......2007-05-18

                      Aloha kakou,
Outstanding collaborative effort by two very important Native Hawaiian voices. This wonderful portrait details a man`s life spent well--dealing with the challenges and trials of surviving Hansen`s disease in Kalaupapa, Moloka`i. Not an in depth about Hansen`s or Kalaupapa, this is Henry`s story, his life, loves, talents and legacy. Henry tells his story, through Sally-Jo`s sensitive handling, with the self effacing, off hand manner of a true local Bruddah. Typical of Hawaiians of his generation, he can do a handful of difficult things really well. This celebration of a life lived with purpose also shows what can result from a life lived purposefully with Aloha. I strongly recommend this book.

Reviewed by Richard R. Blake for Reader Views (3/07)

This is an amazing story. It is Henry's story. Henry Nalielua, diagnosed with Hansen's disease at the age of ten, was branded leprous. "No Footprints in the Sand" is an important memoir. It tells of the journey that took Henry from a sugar plantation community on the Island of Hawaii to Kalaupapa, a remote settlement on the Hawaiian island of Molokai.

Nalaielua's story is inspiring. Even in exile, with lifelong medical and physical challenges and isolation from his family, he faced life with hope, perseverance, courage, and humor. Henry learned to draw and paint. He became an artist. Henry loved music and mastered the ukulele and upright bass. He became a musician. Henry's mind was sharp. He was determined and quick-to-learn. He became an historian. Henry has also served on numerous public agency advisory boards. When the facility at Kalaupapa was named a National Historic Park, Henry became a guide for park visitors. He still resides at Kalaupapa

Co-author Sally-Jo Bowman worked determinedly over a period of years to help bring Henry's story to publication. She first met Henry in 1995, when he helped her with on-site research at Kaluapapa for several magazine articles about the Hansen's disease colony.

Henry's story is unforgettable. It is told with intimacy and openness. "No Footprints in the Sand" is a heartwarming memoir that will inspire anyone facing adversity, long term illness, or needing encouragement. This was a very positive reading experience.

5 out of 5 stars It stirred emotions in the same way as Paulo Coelho's "The Alchemist".......2007-02-08

In his powerful first book, "Uncle Henry" Nalaielua tells a story that has rarely been told, of a dark moment of Hawai'i's history; not from the distant viewpoint of the historian, but from the first-person testimony of its survivor.

With honesty, humor and vivid detail, Henry's courageous tale touched my soul, so profoundly, that I kept wanting to know more. I couldn't put it down and finished it in one sitting, wishing that it wouldn't end. It stirred emotions in the same way as Paulo Coelho's, "The Alchemist," in its message of following one's dream, despite all obstacles. (Except, this is no fable; it is a real life piece.)

Along with his brilliant co-author, Sally-Jo Bowman, he weaves an intimate story of strength and perserverence, which will surely be known for decades to come as one of the islands' finest mo`olelo.

This is a must read for everyone and makes for a wonderful gift. It will touch you in surprising ways, and make you want to meet this incredible man and the spiritual place that he would finally call, "home."

                      5 out of 5 stars Henry, a rascal, can-do kanaka (Hawaiian man).......2007-01-19

I've now given away so many copies of No Footprints that I should have bought a dozen or twenty at wholesale. Henry's is an amazing story of a kolohe kanaka - naughty Hawaiian - who had the misfortune to contract a dreaded disease in 1936. Sally-Jo Bowman's input makes it a fascinating read. Sounds just like Henry sat down and wrote it all by himself, but we know it doesn't work that way. I chuckled at Henry's can-do attitude. Man after my own heart. I'm glad the book includes all his Casanova events. What a guy, a real renaissance kanaka kane - Hawaiian man. Great title!

                      5 out of 5 stars A powerful reading experience.......2007-01-19

Henry's authentic Hawaiian sensibility and voice walked all the way through his memoir into my heart. This book is the footprint denied him by Hansen's disease and the sands of Kalaupapa. The history was previously unknown to me, so I was shocked at times and outraged on his behalf, but I always trusted his courage, humor, and rebellious resourcefulness. I couldn't wait to see which way Henry would spin in order to stick the next landing. He's a man I'm proud to have met, if only in print. A bit of Henry goes with me now to see how many ways I, too, can accept or face down obstacles.

This is the first time I read a book by Sarah Challis. Well, I must say.. Not bad.

The entire book shows whatever has to happen, will happen. No matter what. Destiny plays a crucial part in the events that are a part of our lives.

There were few parts in the book that could have been avoided. However, overall it's a good read.

I dont remember the first time that I read this poem. I do know that it is one of my favorites. This book is a look into the world that created the poem. It is amazing to read what this women went through. Where many people would have given up Mary keeps going and looks to the brighter side of things. If you love the poem please read this book. What a beautiful and motivational look at the life of the author of the immortal poem, "Footprints in the Sand". Mary Stevenson is a true survivor who never loses her ability to look at the world and it's people in the most optimistic light. Her faith never waivers, despite the obstacles and tragedies she endures from childhood on. Ms. Giorgio (the author) obviously took great pains to learn and relate the true story of the woman behind one of the greatest poems of all time. I highly recommend it to everyone - makes a wonderful gift too!

                            Book Description

While Allan Ogot's circuits of influence have been very wide, and while he has participated in conferences and forums around the world, he has never yielded his intellectual and personal anchorage in Kenya - though he has had numerous opportunities to accept distinguished chairs overseas. Extraordinarily, Allan Ogot has sustained his incredible level of service and scholarship through shifting and challenging conditions within Kenya and within Africa, navigating changing economic and political circumstances. His steady hand and persistent commitment to the highest ideals of scholarly engagement and community provide remarkable model for all who are dedicating themselves and will dedicate themselves to Africanist scholarship. This autobiography provides a commentary on the history of Kenya as seen through Allan Ogot's life experiences.

5 out of 5 stars An important contribution to the literature about Meher Baba.......1998-02-28

The story starts in 1969 when, at the age of 44, Bill Stephens went
through a near-death experience that changed him instantaneously
from an agnostic to a spiritual seeker, erased his lifelong fear of death
and eradicated his crippling addictions. He "...exploded into a brilliance
beyond anything I could imagine, and I was immersed in the warmth
and joy of a Living Presence that loved me and accepted me totally."

During the experience, Stephens saw a face in the light that he later
identified as the great 20th century spiritual master, Avatar Meher Baba.
That was the beginning of the author's love affair with God. His
compelling book includes many personal and graphic stories
of the ups and downs of treading the Path of Love by following
the divine footsteps of the Master.

The author has written many previous books about science and the
oceans, marine animals, and undersea research. But this
is his finest work because it comes straight from the heart.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshingly filled with God's palpable essence.......1998-02-27

This book is brimful of God's presence. It weaves
His shining light between the sentences,
dancing with the words. The real-life vignettes are wonderful!
