      Book Description

Modern Magnetooptics and Magnetooptical Materials provides a comprehensive account of the principles and applications of magnetooptics, bridging the gap between textbooks and specialist accounts in the research and review literature. The book is aimed at the graduate physicist and electrical engineer, but assumes no specialist knowledge of magnetooptics. Chapters have been designed to be reasonably independent, so that readers in search of information on a particular topic can go straight to the appropriate place in the book, with only occasional reference to material elsewhere. Divided into three main parts, the book begins with the principles of magnetooptics to provide the necessary theoretical background. This section's emphasis is on introducing practical considerations through examples taken from real-life situations. The next part surveys a wide range of magnetooptic materials, including metals, alloys, and granular structures. The final part explores applications of magnetooptics in practical devices, such as modulators, switches, memory devices, and waveguides. This book provides a thorough introduction for graduate students of physics and electrical engineering, and a useful reference for researchers.

I am a researcher in this field. This book is the bible in this field. It talks about different aspects of PLD and different kinds of materials. Highly recommend to you if you are in this field.

4 out of 5 stars Summarises the field well.......2004-06-09

Though this book is now ten years old, its papers should still hold up well. It surveys the then new field of making thin films by using pulses of high intensity laser light. The papers are written by experts in these methods.

Nucleation dynamics and how a film can grow under deposition pulses are explained in one chapter.

Several chapters also discuss the related subject of laser-induced ablation of surfaces. Studies are summarised of the characteristics of the ablated material. In some ways, ablation can be considered the inverse process to deposition.

One attraction of the deposition methods is to apply these in the construction of high temperature superconducting films. Typically, these are complex oxides, of 4 or more elements. The commercial viability of these materials depends in no small part on being able to manufacture them cheaply. The book has a chapter expanding on the praticality of this application.

        Book Description

The mid-infrared (2-10µm) spectral region is of enormous scientific and technological interest because it contains the strongest fingerprint absorption bands of a number of pollutant and toxic gases which require monitoring in a variety of different situations (e.g., oil-rigs, coal mines, landfill sites and car exhausts) and in concentrations, ranging from parts per billion to almost 100%. Organic liquids, narcotics and many biological and bio-medical analytes also have fingerprint absorptions in this spectral range. In addition, the atmospheric transmission window between 3 µm and 5 µm enables free-space optical communications, thermal imaging and the development of infrared counter-measures for "homeland security". However, many of these applications require technology based on un-cooled, efficient, inexpensive sources and detectors which are not yet available and so wide exploitation of this spectral range has yet to take place. There is no doubt that the practical realisation of mid-infrared semiconductor lasers, LEDs and detectors which can operate at room temperature will transform them from a specialist research curiosity to a pervasive technology that will unlock a wide variety of applications. Many of the necessary developments depend on the ability to fabricate suitable high-quality epitaxial materials through the use of strained-layer engineering at the nanoscale and to manipulate the optoelectronic properties of the corresponding quantum device structures. There are a number of different materials, active region designs and device structures currently being investigated for both light sources and detectors. Many of the salient features together with recent progress in each of these areas is presented in this text. Mid-infrared Semiconductor Optoelectronics is an overview of the current status and technological advances in this rapidly developing area. It is divided into four parts. First, some of the basic physics and the main problems facing the device engineer (together with a comparison of possible solutions) are presented. Next, there is a consideration of the different types of lasers currently under development. For practical mid-infrared applications semiconductor lasers must operate at room temperature and several different approaches to achieve this, particularly within the difficult 3–4 µm spectral region are discussed. Part III reviews recent work on light-emitting diodes and photodetectors and also deals with negative luminescence. The final part of the book is concerned with applications and highlights, once more, the diversity and technological importance of the mid-infrared spectral region. The text has been produced by a world-wide authorship of experts in mid-infrared physics and technology, each working at the cutting edge in their own specialist area. Mid-infrared Semiconductor Optoelectronics will be an invaluable reference for researchers and graduate students drawn from backgrounds in physics, electronic and electrical engineering and materials science. Its breadth and thoroughness also make it an excellent starting point for further research and investigation.

          Book Description

This graduate-level text presents the fundamental physics of solid-state lasers, including the basis of laser action and the optical and electronic properties of laser materials. Some knowledge of quantum mechanics and solid-state physics is assumed, but the discussion is as self-contained as possible, making the book an excellent reference as well as useful for independent study. After an overview of the topic, the book is divided into two parts. The first begins with a review of the quantum mechanics and solid-state physics, spectroscopy, and crystal field theory; it then treats the quantum theory of radiation, the emission and absorption of radiation, and nonlinear optics; it concludes with discussions of lattice vibrations and ion-ion interactions and of their effects on optical properties and laser action. The second part treats specific solid-state laser materials, the protypical ruby and Nd-YAG systems being treated in greatest detail; it concludes with a discussion of novel and non-standard materials.

            Book Description

The "blue laser" is an exciting new device used in physics. The potential is now being recognized for its development into a commercial lighting system using about a tenth of the power and with a thousand times the operating lifetime of a comparable conventional system. This comprehensive work introduces the subject at a level suitable for graduate students. It covers the basics physics of light emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) based on gallium nitride and related nitride semiconductors, and gives an outline of their structural, transport and optical properties, and the relevant device physics. It begins with the fundamentals, and covers both theory and experiment, as well as an examination of actual and potential device applications. Shuji Nakamura and Nichia Chemicals Industries made the initial breakthroughs in the field, and these have revealed that LEDs and LDs are a sophisticated physical phenomenon and a commercial reality.

            4 out of 5 stars A pleasant read.......2005-11-06

Good as an introductory monograph, poor textbook. All the information is present, but it is not well organized for self learning or course development. Nevertheless it is worth reading if you are interested in this field. If you are new to the material, start elsewhere, then come look at this book.

4 out of 5 stars This book help me finish my Ph. D. disseration in Taiwan.......2000-10-13

Firstly, I would like to say thanks to the authors, I am an experimentalist who was lack of the theoretical training, I read the book by self-studying. The style of this book inherit the book ¡§Laser physics¡¨ (by Sargent, Scully, Lamb), which is also my favorite. Especially, in the new editing, Meystre update new topics in the field of modern quantum optics (such as cavity QED) which I think also very good for self-study. However, the new typesetting of the book makes me somehow uncomfortable since the spacing of the lines is too compact. I would appreciate the editing/typesetting of the second editing.

Best known for his Jessica Jones series Christopher Nicole also occasionally brings out stand alone masterpieces. Cold Country, Hot Sun however is not one of these. It is no where near as good as a lot of his other novels, there are too many characters which gets very confusing in parts of the novel.

This novel is basically about a whingeing English couple (the Lyttons) who retire from running a successful and well known restaurant in London to a small Spanish town called Javea about an hour from Alicante. On the journey to their new house they stop at the beach for a swim where their car is stolen along with all their money, passports, rabie certificate for their golden retriever Fred, and everything else not in the removal truck. The couple then find Spain's relaxed culture does things differently than back home and spend basically the whole time whingeing until their car is returned by the police with a blood stained front seat. The one who killed their thieves assumed they had something he wanted on their person but when he does not find it knows the thieves must have hidden it in the car. A rival crime family (who the thieves were working for before they stole the car) also want that something. Both will stop at nothing to find out where the English couple may have put what they are looking for and take what they believe is rightfully theirs. The English couple of course keep whingeing about everything from their neighbours' foreign habits to local customs all the way to the final pages.
