Book Description

Understanding the way in which large-scale structures like galaxies form remains the most challenging problem in cosmology today. This text provides an up-to-date and pedagogical introduction to this exciting area of research. Part 1 deals with the Friedmann model, the thermal history of the universe, and includes a description of observed structures in the universe. Part 2 describes the theory of gravitational instability in the linear regime, and the statistics of density fields. This part also includes chapters on the microwave background radiation and large scale velocity fields. Part 3 of the book covers nonlinear instability, high redshift objects, inflation, cosmic strings and dark matter. Each chapter is accompanied by a comprehensive set of exercises to help the reader in self-study.

The book will be of interest to research and graduate students in cosmology, relativity, theoretical physics, astrophysics and astronomy. It is also suitable for use as a graduate textbook for introductory graduate level courses.

The diagram on the cover shows the distribution of galaxies in the universe around us. It is derived from a density plot out to 325 million light years using the QDOT (QMW -- Durham -- Oxford -- Toronto) all-sky redshift survey of galaxies detected by the IRAS satellite. The Local Supercluster (including our own Milky Way) lies near the centre of the plot with A1367, Coma, A2197/2199 and Hercules joining together to form part of the Great Wall in the Northern Hemisphere, with Hercules along the top right limb. Joined to this huge structure with a bridge of galaxies passing through the galactic plane are Perseus -- Pisces and N1600. Other newly detected superclusters(S3, S6) are shown at the foot of the diagram, below the Perseus -- Pisces trunk. The Pavo -- Indus structure seems to be floating to the immediate right of the lower trunk. Shapley's supercluster is floating immediately above it with the Hydra -- Centaurus cluster extending from the mai

2 out of 5 stars Too much information in one book.......2001-12-24

I used this book when taking cosmology lectures. Then I already mastered the principles of general relativity and advanced quantum theory. Nevertheless, I found the book still too advanced for self study. For this book to be useful, or to enjoy this book, one should already be very familiar with the subject.

Perhaps the book could be useful for reference purposes since it does contain a lot of information. Because everything is so densely packed and not very clearly presented, I found it not useful for a first acquantaince with the subject. And certainly not for beginners. Now, five years later, it is still in my book shelf, but I have never looked into it again. A slight disappointment for me, also because it is not cheap.

My advice to those who are doubting, check it out in the library.

4 out of 5 stars Overall,quite a good book.......2000-07-05

This is an excellent but slightly advanced book, though it is getting outdated now. It is especially suitable for a Physics student with no prior introduction to Astronomy. This book has an excellnt collection of problems which should be a challenge for serious graduate students. This book can be used as a textbook for an advanced graduate course on Structure Formation. For readers who want a simpler introduction to this subject, read Coles & Lucchin's book on the Large scale Structure .

    Book Description

How old is our Universe? At what speed is our Universe expanding? Is our universe flat or curved? How is the hierarchical structure of the present Universe formed? The purpose of IAU Symposium 183 on the Cosmological Parameters and the Evolution of the Universe was to encourage a state-of-the-art discussion and assessment of cosmology by putting together the latest observational data and theoretical ideas on the evolution of the universe and cosmological parameters. In this volume, excellent reviews on these subjects by distinguished scientists are included. The first article by M.S. Longair, `Cosmological Parameters and the Evolution of the Universe: Progress and Prospect', is a magnificent general review which can be understood by non-specialists. The other reviews include Hubble Constants (W.L. Freedman, G.A. Tammann), Microwave Background Radiation (R.B. Partridge, N. Sugiyama), Galaxy Formation and Evolution (R.S. Ellis) and Alternative Cosmological Models (J.V. Narlikar). In addition to the reviews, recent observational and theoretical developments by outstanding active scientists are included.

      Book Description

This book is a synopsis of modern deep-field astronomy, based on the powerful telescopes and instruments developed in recent years. It is organized along topical themes, such as the extragalactic background radiation at different wavelengths, the evolution of galaxies, the history of star formation, the nature of absorbers, the reionization of the intergalactic medium, the validity of photometric redshifts, gravitational lensing, and clustering of galaxies. Stellar and substellar objects were not neglected, however, and one session was devoted to nearby bodies such as trans-Neptunian solar system objects, brown dwarfs, and stars with special characteristics.

        Book Description

The exploration of the first billion years of the history of the Universe, from the so-called dark ages to cosmic reionisation, represents one of the great challenges of contemporary astrophysics. During these phases the first structures start to grow forming the first stars, galaxies, and possibly also soon the first quasars. At the same time the dark, neutral Universe starts to be lit up and ionised by these sources, leading to its progressive reionisation anding at a redshift of about 6. Furthermore the first stars and supernovae begin to enrich their surroundings and the intergalactic medium, and to produce the first dust.
In the recent years tremendous progress has been made on the theoretical understanding and on numerical simulations of the underlying astrophysical mechanisms. Furthermore, observations of signatures of reionisation and even direct observations of galaxies at redshifts larger than 6 are now becoming feasible. The observational and theoretical aspects of this story were comprehensively and pedagocically covered by the lecturers of the 36th Saas-Fee Advanced Course. This volume contains their worked out and updated lecture notes.

              Book Description

Theoretical cosmology has undergone a stage of very rapid development over the past decade. Given an initial theory for the origin of density fluctuations, it is now possible to make high-precision quantitative predictions of cosmic microwave background anisotropies and matter power spectra. It is hard for young scientists who want to work in the field of modern cosmology to find books which will provide them with a pedagogical and comprehensive overview of recent developments. The aim of the present volume is to fill this gap. The volume contains a selection of review articles written by international experts and will give the reader a comprehensive introduction to modern cosmology. It goes beyond existing books and conference proceedings in providing the reader with an in-depth survey of recent advances in modern cosmology. Some of the topics (e.g., the modern theory of CMB anisotropies and their application to defect models) are presented for the first time in a comprehensive way suited for physicists who want to start working in the field or gain a solid foundation in modern cosmology. The review article on alternative ideas in cosmology which might address some of the problems of the present models is also a unique feature of this book.

                  Book Description

As this book was being written, the jigsaw puzzle of data from galaxies, Lyman alpha clouds, gravitational lensing and the cosmic microwave sky appeared for the first time to be coming together into a consistent theoretical model comprising a nearly flat universe with cold dark matter (CDM) and a cosmological constant. It was recognised, however, that the model leaves much to explain theoretically, especially the amount of fine tuning needed to get the desired cosmological constant. There is also a hint from gravitational lensing that the cosmological constant might be smaller than that required to explain the high redshift supernova data. CDM models produce dwarf galaxy haloes that are too numerous and too dense to be compatible with observation. There are also discussions of inflation and quantum cosmological theories of the initial conditions. The book also addresses observational issues, such as the TOCO results, the 2-degree field survey and the Sloan Digital Sky survey. Many lectures focus on the signatures in the cosmic microwave sky of various theoretical models.

                        "My leg was gone.

"I'm not talking about my real leg, the left one, but the bottom 21 inches of the right one, which is made of aluminum and plastic the color of a scuffed, dirty Barbie doll."

A missing leg is just one of the dilemmas Marl Trevicker wakes up to on a hangover morning in June.

"Last Leg" is a whodunit about breast augmentation, corporate downsizing, toxic dumping, toxic relatives, a beautiful detective, and how they affect a one-legged man who works for an air freshener company in New Jersey.

4 out of 5 stars A leg to stand on.......2004-01-19

Dave Hanson, presently writing for the Tonight Show With Jay Leno, has also written for Mad TV, Late Show With David Letterman, and National Lampoon. So it's not exactly surprising that the quirky whodunnit "Last Leg" has a lot of humor. Stolen body parts, sex-obsessed males (human and not), headless chickens and industrial waste somehow weave together in this book.

Marl Trevicker wakes to a monstrous hangover, an absent wife (she's having breast enlargement surgery), a dirty house, a comatose (hungover) brother on his couch, and his libidinous cat having an intimate encounter with his neck. What's more, his leg is missing. No, not a real leg -- due to a freak accident that rearranged his life, he has a prosthetic leg. And it's gone. And somebody is breaking into his home.

Well, clearly that sort of thing can't be allowed to continue -- and he wants his leg back. He enlists the aid of Cranci, a sexy private detective who aids in his problems. (Yes, he has the hots for her) That is, until his cat is kidnapped... er, catnapped, and he's swept up into a bizarre conspiracy of breaking-and-entering, toxic waste, the occasional interrupted assault, and the missing body part...

Gritty, raunchy, weird and quite funny, "Last Leg" has the flavor of Carl Hiaasen (PG-14-rated humor and odd urban characters) he collaborated with Raymond Chandler (lots of amusing one-liners). The peculiar crimes in Marl's life mixed with more realistic problems (industrial waste being dumped in a river) are somehow meshed together, although readers might be a little confused by the connections.

Hanson flips smoothly from passages that almost seem like a script, to evocative descriptions complete with sounds, smells, textures, and other little details that make them come alive. As for Marl's thoughts, this seems like a pretty accurate glimpse (well, as far as I can tell) inside an average male head. A little stream-of-consciousness, some life musings and flashbacks, and lots of woman-related thoughts.

The world of "Last Leg" is peopled with very quirky characters, like Marl (who has the cushiest job in the world, and they can't fire him), a guy with tattooed hair, a lust-crazed cat, and many more. Marl has a sort of everyman appeal; he's not quite hapless, although at times he seems to think he is. Cranci is an enigma who hides some very surprising motives, and Cliff a little too woman-crazed at times (make that a LOT!), but a good sidekick and sounding board.

Fans of Dave Barry and Carl Hiaasen's novels will enjoy the comic whodunnit "Last Leg." Entertaining, frenetic and very quirky.

Marl is the stuff of great literature. A flawed hero with a weird cat. Read it. It's hilarious.

                        3 out of 5 stars A gag-writer's novel.......2003-11-28

Neophyte novelist and gag writer, Dave Hanson is one very funny dude, especially if you're a suburban teen feeling the first surges of testosterone. Included among his credits (according to the book's jacket) are stints with Mad TV, the Late Show with David Letterman, Comedy Central, and National Lampoon. Currently Hanson writes for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

I have to say that this seems right since this novel reads like a spell-checked first draft of some ideas a talented but not very well read twenty-something might have had while sitting at the keyboard dreaming up gags for Mad TV or Jay Leno.

Marl Trevicker, the protagonist of this raunchy, one-liner-jammed tale of one-legged sexual angst in the Garden State is a leg man in more ways than one. But there are a few confusing things going on in his life. For one thing his wife Evelyn is in California getting her breasts enhanced, although Marl swears he loves her as she is. For another some bizarro demon is slipping into his house while he's gone and having some very weird fun with the premises.

But Marl is not in any dire straits. After all this is a comedy. He's got a cushy "job" with Aspen Air Freshener Corporation with no duties. The company wants to get rid of him but he has a worker's comp kind of contract prohibiting them from firing him. True, the mystery burglar is taking some elaborate pains to get our boy's attention, including setting up a Rube Goldberg chicken-beheading machine complete with live chicken, triggered by Marl's trying to push open a door, which sends the chicken dancing around the house, spewing blood for several minutes. However, the intruder also plays Santa Claus by leaving a new entertainment system apparently as a present.

Marl's also got a cat named Vinnie with some legs problems of its own that he carries around with him like a papoose. The cat's libido somehow got haywired by the vet and now it humps anything and everything within reach, turning all cat-sized objects into gal-pals. One might say that Vinnie is a sort of Marl Trevicker doppelganger.

But the main problem is Marl can't find his artificial leg. As the novel opens we learn that he got so blindingly drunk the night before that he can't remember what happened, but figures he must have left the leg somewhere, thus sending him off on an odyssey of north Jersey.

Quite clearly our boy has a lot of time on his hands and no direction home. He meets a saucy, leggy, flat-chested P.I. at a bar and figures that she could help him find his lost leg. He also divines that she might be able to help him with his libido since he can't masturbate because every time he does, something bad happens to somebody. (This is supposed to be, I guess, a kind of dramatic irony based on the old notion of the sin of self-abuse.)

Okay, you got the premise, and I mean if everybody put as much energy into their premises, they'd never get around to writing the rest of it. Hanson does, however, although to be honest I don't think it matters. The main problem is there is virtually no dramatic tension so that the only reason we have for turning the pages is to read some more of Hanson's admittedly very clever lines. He has a plot of course including the dumping of poisons by Aspen into the not so pristine New Jersey rivers, but the plot is not well integrated with character development, and so it also doesn't matter. There's a bit of a conflict developing between his bosses at Aspen but Hanson is more intent on having Marl exchange wise-cracks with his erstwhile brother Cliff while stumbling through some Jersey dives and eating establishments than he is at character development. What he does well is vividly depict the young male sex-obsessed mind through over-the-top metaphors and bizarre scenes and scenarios.

Here are some examples to give you a feel for the prose:

On Rhino the barkeep: "his teeth as gray as his bar rag."

On making eyes with Cranci Glocz, the leggy P.I.: "it's also very exciting when someone looks into the Window of Your Soul and they don't mind the view."

On being without: "Just like you shouldn't go to the supermarket on an empty stomach...you shouldn't make any life decisions with your prostate swollen up and pressing against your brain."

His brother on a well-endowed woman: "if keisters were brains we'd be talking Nobel Prize."

On the hot atmosphere: "as thick as a bum's hair."

On a pic: "Sometimes a still photo reveals a facet of a person..." concealed "in real life." (I think he got this one from me, but I don't know how! Anyway it's true and worth thinking about.)

On a couple of bar girls: "I felt their eyes gathering on me and settling...like flies on a carcass."

Bottom line here is: Dave, take that Famous Writers' course, and DON'T quit your night job.

From the supplier: Rumor has it that the US government may be out to milk its hapless taxpayers of all their earnings in order to pay for the bloated salaries of assorted members of its self-perpetuating and self-important economic bureaucracy. Fortunately for the government, rumor may no longer have the same hold on the public as it once did. This is best illustrated by the reported demise of 'Rumor World' magazine in 1994, which ended the 62-year life of a sensationalist publication which thrived on scurrilous reportage of such matters as Elvis sightings, Bill Clinton's sexual predilections and extraterrestrial abductions of prominent people. After peaking in the 1980s, with some 50,000 subscribers, this thoroughly unrepentant publication saw its circulation decline sharply as recession strangled its readership base.
