    Book Description

Soliton-based concepts open the road for newly designed laser sources, new frequency converters and high-intensity laser-material interactions. Optical solitons as stable spatial patterns of complex nonlinear systems allow for the control of the diffraction of optical beams. Solitons also prevent unwanted chaotic behavior. Thus, solitary wave physics plays a significant role from modern optical physics to optical communication, optical switching, and optical storage. The book gives an updated overview of optical solitons and can serve as a reference and guide for advanced students and scientists working in the field and related areas of science where solitons are observed.

      Book Description

The community of research workers interested in solitons and signal processing came to realise that there is more to the behaviour of crystals displaying second-order nonlinearity than creating second-harmonic sources. It turns out that there are also soliton - or, more correctly, solitary wave - solutions to the coupled equations which involve a balance between the fundamental wave and the co-propagating second-harmonic wave. Second-order nonlinearity, then, is attracting a lot of interest, both in the more traditional phase-matching requirements needed to generate second-harmonic waves very efficiently - see the drive to the blue laser or its alternatives - and in the new area of solitary waves. The present book is devoted to three main themes: solitons, quasi-phase matching, frequency conversion and parametric interactions. The material has been written by distinguished contributors and the range of topics, together with the emphasis put on them, gives the reader a depth of understanding firmly rooted in the basic material.

        Book Description

Despite remarkable developments in the field, a detailed treatment of non-Kerr law media has not been published. Introduction to non-Kerr Law Optical Solitons is the first book devoted exclusively to optical soliton propagation in media that possesses non-Kerr law nonlinearities. After an introduction to the basic features of fiber-optic communications, the book outlines the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), conserved quantities, and adiabatic dynamics of soliton parameters. It then derives the NLSE for Kerr law nonlinearity from basic principles, the inverse scattering transform, and the 1-soliton solution. The book also explains the variational principle and Lie transform. In each case of non-Kerr law solitons, the authors develop soliton dynamics, evaluated integrals of motion, and adiabatic dynamics of soliton parameters based on multiple-scale perturbation theory. The book explores intra-channel collision of optical solitons in both Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian type perturbations. In addition, it examines the stochastic perturbation of optical solitons, the corresponding Langevin equations, and optical couplers, followed by an introduction to optical bullets. Establishing a basis in an important yet insufficiently documented subject, Introduction to non-Kerr Law Optical Solitons will help fuel advances in optical communication systems.

                Book Description

The current research into solitons and their use in fiber optic communications is very important to the future of communications. Since the advent of computer networking and high speed data transmission technology people have been striving to develop faster and more reliable communications media. Optical pulses tend to broaden over relatively short distances due to dispersion, but solitons on the other hand are not as susceptible to the effects of dispersion, and although they are subject to losses due to attenuation they can be amplified without being received and re-transmitted.

This book is the first to provide a thorough overview of optical solitons. The main purpose of this book is to present the rapidly developing field of Spatial Optical Solitons starting from the basic concepts of light self-focusing and self-trapping. It will introduce the fundamental concepts of the theory of nonlinear waves and solitons in non-integrated but physically realistic models of nonlinear optics including their stability and dynamics. Also, it will summarize a number of important experimental verification of the basic theoretical predictions and concepts covering the observation of self-focusing in the earlier days of nonlinear optics and the most recent experimental results on spatial solitons, vortex solitons, and soliton interaction & spiraling.

                * Introduces the fundamental concepts of the theory of nonlinear waves and solitons through realistic models

                * Material is based on authors' years of experience actively working in and researching the field

                * Summarizes the most important experimental verification of the basic theories, predictions and concepts of this ever evolving field from the earliest studies to the most recent

5 out of 5 stars Right Book for Nonlinear Optics .......2004-11-25

I am working in the Quantum Optics Research Lab at San Francisco State University. And I meet with many difficulties to find book or any material in Internet which could explain basic ideas about different optical solitons in photonic crystals. This book is great, a specially for someone who have no idea what is a spatial, dark, or vortex soliton. This book has many chapters in which authors discuss step by step not only teory of formation of all kinds of solitons, but also give experimental results. I enjoy to read this book, when I have some questions about solitons, and I recomend it for anyone who wants to understand what is an optical soliton.

                5 out of 5 stars Solitons?!.......2003-09-23

The book provides both an introduction to the basic principles and a comprehensive analysis of the current state-of-the-art in the rapidly developing field of optical solitons, including temporal, spatial, and spatiotemporal solitons. This is a very well-written, pedagogical book that goes through many aspects of the soliton theory and experiment that are not covered in other books. There is a good balance between qualitative
and mathematical analysis in the book, as well as between the theory and experiment. To facilitate understanding of the material, the authors provide readers with many illustrative examples. The reader will find one of the most extensive list of bibliography at the end of each chapter. The index is complete and useful. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the soliton theory and its applications.

                    5 out of 5 stars Champeen.......2000-07-08

This book is a riveting story of life in a small rural town and the joys and heartbreaks of growing up. I loved the storytelling of Heather Ross Miller, and felt like I was in Badin NC, sweltering in the summer heat! Can't wait till her next book is published this fall to hear her wonderful storytelling voice once again! I give this book 5 stars!!!

                    5 out of 5 stars CHAMPEEN.......2000-01-24

I may be a bit biased in my review of CHAMPEEN as I have the priviledge of KNOWING and LIKING ALOT, Heather Ross Miller. She is a smart, very funny lady, she can turn a trip to the grocery store into a funny story, she is the type of person you love to sit with and and chat with, but mostly LISTEN to. This is how I felt while reading her "CHAMPEEN". It is a wonderful story, actually a whole lotta stories in a story, some very funny, some very sad. Being a woman myself, I could relate alot to the main character, TITANIA, both as a woman and as a young girl turning 13. The classic teen-age crush on an older guy, the fantasies of doing something GREAT, like twirling fire in Titania's case-----wanting to be loved and adored by all. Heather, to me, is a master story-teller, who can take everyday ordinary people we encounter and turn them into funny caricatures. For example, Titania's alcoholic father who captures the neighborhood yappy, irritating rat-dog and gives him a bath in their tub, which infuriates Titania's perfect mother, a woman who wants everything and everyone around her to be perfect. And there is the fat preacher who comes to Badin to baptize lost souls in the lake, only to fall into it himself------his speech is a riot, I just loved how she wrote it. I strongly recommend this book for both readers AND writers, as I think Heather is a great writer, a master of words. And I know she is dedicated to her craft, she has written forever, and she has the story-telling genes in her, as her father was a writer, her uncle, her aunt, etc. In closing, I give CHAMPEEN an enormous THUMBS UP, and I am even going to read it again after I am finished with my current book.
