dangerous liasons.......1999-04-21
I REALLY LIKED THIS BOOK. ALTHOUGH I FELT THAT ZILIA WAS A PITYFUL GIRL WHOM NEEDED TO TAKE CONTROL OVER HER SITUATION BUT SHE WAS A GOOD CHARACTER. I THINK SHE HAD A GREAT LIFE IN THE END. THE BOOK IS A QUICK READ AND ENJOYABLE. GREAT TO READ WHILE WATCHING THE MOVIE CRUEL INTENTIONS 1999. HOPE YOU LIKE IT TOO.
Wonderful critique of Enlightenment France.......1999-02-17
Graffigny has been neglected too long. Her fictional heroine's commentary is as effective a response to the marginalization of women as Olympe de Gouges' "Rights of Women and Citizen". Perhaps more importantly, it's an entertaining narrative of a young girls journey towards independance and her own definition of autonomy.

Essential reading for Flann O'Brien fans.......2000-08-25
This book is the definitive biography, whatever quibbles one may have with the author's judgments, aesthetic or otherwise, about O'Nolan's life or art. Think instead about what you get with this book: an author who knew the subject personally, in-depth research into O'Nolan's origins and childhood, an intimate knowledge of the Irish literary scene in the interwar and postwar years, and the ability to show how these shaped the subject intellectually and psychologically. I disagree with a few of Cronin's assessments: I think The Dalkey Archive was the pinnacle of O'Nolan's novelistic achievements. While I agree he should have written more novels, I also feel that his time writing newspaper columns was well spent; there's more wit in most of those columns than in many novels by lesser writers. This book satisfies one of the most important criteria of a biography, that it be a good read in and of itself: Cronin is an excellent writer.
A wonderful view of Dublin literary and middle classlife.......1999-01-10
This is a beautifully written book about a brillant frustrated man, who was a great novelist, newspaper columnist and a competent bureaucrat at the same time. Interesting to an American for that insider's look at those segments of Irish life, it is also valueable to an Irish American Catholic for it is explanation of how O'Brien's convinced Catholicism limited his intellectual curiosity.
Useful, entertaining, and occasionally frustrating.......1997-12-13
Cronin is an affectionate biographer but thankfully not a hagiographer. His personal acquaintance with Brian O'Nolan gives him insight into the various personal and artistic personae that O'Nolan adopted: Flann O'Brien, Myles na gCopaleen, etc. Cronin spends too much energy speculating as to why O'Brien never managed to fulfil the artistic potential of his first two novels. It is, perhaps, unfair to fault Cronin, as this failure frustrates anyone who has read O'Brien's early work. However, Cronin's tone occasionally becomes pious and judgemental of O'Nolan. One wishes this tone would have extended to other aspects of O'Nolan's life (specifically the personal); Cronin evokes and explains the mind set of Dublin in the early to mid twentieth century, but he seems wary of really examining it. In all fairness, that might have been another book altogether. In sum, the book is readable, often as funny as O'Brien himself (and occasionally just as sad), and useful for the student of Flann O'Brien. It fills

In a different time and place........2007-04-24
It was almost a lifetime ago when H.E. Bates wrote A Month by the Lake and Other stories. Perhaps, his writing is a little dated. However, I just love his use of metaphors. For example when Bates has Major Wilshaw describe Ms. Bentley as having "a mustardy sense of humour, a little dry and hot on the tongue as it were."
You just can't get that in "Modern" day novella. Today's authors are too busy trying to discover governmental plots, or shop the entirety of London. Don't get me wrong. I savour these types of fiction too.
I'm just so glad that I stumbled upon these short stories. It takes me back a different time and place where people took time out of their day to feel the breeze brush past them. They peeled grapes, posted mail, and rode trains from England to Italy.
Easy times and happy people.......2005-10-18
Wouldn't you like to have a whole month to vacation in Europe by a lake flirting with an attractive countryman? That is really all there is to this story, and yet it has a disceet charm which cannot be denied.
I think everyone has somewhere inside a vision which equates roughly to this story. Would that we could all enjoy its charms every year of our lives.

Too slow and boring.......2007-10-10
I didn't know that this book was a mystery and i like mysteries, but this was too slow and dull.
EXCELLENT!.......2007-10-04
From start to finish Keith Lee Johnson kept my attention wrapt in this page-turner. Phoenix Perry is drawn back into action when her Aunt Ruth calls with news that her cousin Michelle is in a coma. Little does Phoenix know that while she hunts to solve the mystery surrounding Michelle's condition, she too is being hunted. Full of intrigue and surprise twists K. L. J. has brought his readers another "must read" novel.
Excellent as always!.......2007-09-29
Keith never fails to draw me in. I can't put his books down. His easy style turns his words into reality. I feel I am living his books and not just reading. This one was no exception!
If you've never read his books, you should start now. What a joy.

Truly A Gift.......2007-01-21
I purchased this book as a gift for my dad. Janis Holt Giles came to me while doing family research, The Kentuckians was resourced in one family's information so I purchased that book. My dad took it up and read it and has been a Giles fan ever since. From then on every month I have bought a new Giles book for him to read and he enjoys them so. He reads the books in one day then passes them along to anyone who will read them.
He believes Janis Holt Giles to be one of the most gifted writers of all times.I just simply get pleasure from finding him books he loves to read.
Beautiful Character Weaving.......2006-07-09
Janice Holt Giles takes you to a small place in Appalacia and begins weaving a picture of the people, the ways of life, the long time traditions, and the religion that is deep in the heart of the country. She does it in a way that actually made me fall in love with the people and yearn for a simpler life (even though logically, I know I would have a hard time adapting to such a life). It took me a long time to decide to read this book because the cover is not engaging, but once I had started, I had a hard time putting it down!
40 Acres and No Plot.......2004-07-23
This was the worst book I have ever had the misfortune of reading. You see, I had to read it for school. I am 13 years old. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not just a stupid 13 year old who hates everything to do with reading; I LOVE to read. I usually like all the books I read, this is the first one I absolutely hated. No offense to the author or anything, but do people really care how she likes her biscuts? Or does she really think we care about the music for the song "Jesus Hold My Hand"? I mean, give me a break! So those of you who want to read this book, please consider this before wasting your precious money on this excuse for a book.
What a wonderful book!.......2002-05-20
I loved this book because it took me on a journey to a part of the United States that is not known to most readers. And to a time that is not today. And to know people who are unlike any neighbors I have ever had.
I really enjoyed learning the landscape and the problems and the social activities of mountain people. Someone who lives in an urban area (or the suburbs of an urban area) may feel superior to these characters, feel privileged compared to such country types but I really admired many of the people for coping so well with their circumstances. Many seem heroic, even.
I'd like to say Thank You to this author!
Catchy and Cool.......2000-06-23
You will enjoy reading this.
I did.

My Sunshine Has Come.......2007-08-23
This is the story of Laila Jackson. Laila was born at a hospital and abandoned by her mother. She spent her early life in foster care because no one wanted to adopt what they presumed was a drug-addicted baby. At the age of 17, Laila started stripping under the name Quiet Storm.
David saw her at the strip club and decided to rescue her from that life. During David and Laila's 4 years together, David beat Laila. Finally, after 4 miscarriages and a severe beating, Laila sought the assistance of her chiropractic employer to leave David.
Laila moved to Philadelphia. She first dated Jordan, a playboy. Laila then met John at a poetry reading. Laila and John developed a deep love for each other and Laila became pregnant. Laila's world was later rocked when she finds out that John has cheated on her and that her birth mother and birth sister are alive and looking for her.
My review:
I read this book easily in 2-3 days. The writing was outstanding and engrossing. The storyline moved pretty quickly and wasn't all predictable. The only part I didn't like is that Laila went back to John after blaming someone else for something wrong he did and I did not like the name she chose for her child. Other than those two things, I thought the book was very good.
I am impressed that the author chose this storyline. Many people never find out about what happen to those individuals that are raised in foster care who don't end up on drugs or prostitutes. It would be nice if more authors wrote stories that that haven't been addressed before in other books.
The Sun Shines Again..............2007-07-04
This book is so goooooood. Laila had it hard, but turned her whole life around. Inspirational; motivating. A really good read. I highly recommended you read this.
Shocking!.......2007-04-27
Oh my gosh, Candice Dow strikes again! In this heart wrenching, soul stirring novel; Dow powerfully illuminates one girl's constant struggle to survive. Laila was never afforded the fortunate opportunity of enjoying a peaceful childhood. She was unaffectionately forced into a life of chaos from the very day she was born when her mother deserted her at the hospital. Due to this initial abandonment, Laila was subjected to many years of distrust in humankind, abuse, a lack of self-confidence, and low self-esteem. Just when she thinks she has found solace, turmoil develops yet again.
Be prepared to experience a plethora of emotions as Laila travels through an abyss of trials. Laila's reaction to each of her trials is what determines her life's path. Just when I assumed I had figured out all the pieces to the puzzle known as Laila's life, shocking revelations surfaced.
"Much Love To Laila".......2007-03-14
This is one of the best books I've read so far this year. I loved Laila's story, her character was so inspiring. She had to overcome so much and the adversities start from her birth. It made me wonder how strong I'd be and if I would have been strong enough or smart enough to survive if I found myself in the same situations Laila found herself in. Ms. Dow does a great job creating a young lady that you can't help but love and root for. I wanted so bad for Laila to find happiness. I'm not going to spoil it, so you'll have to read it to see if she finally does. I've passed this book to two of my girlfriends because I know they will enjoy it. Great story, can't wait for Ms. Dow's next book.
Entertaining with a Flair.......2006-10-28
This was such an inspiring story. It shows that people can overcome any obstacles that may cross their paths as long as they have faith. It also taught forgiveness and how you need to move from the past to be able to move forward to the future in a positive light. This is the first piece of material I read from this author and look forward to purchasing Caught Up in the Mix.

Customer Reviews:
Cute and insightful read.......2007-04-14
Juanita is young bi-racial (Haitian/Jewish) woman at the turning point in her life. She is adopted and unaware of her true identity...raised in an African American community, she is proud to be black but is hurt and confused by her peers rejection and jealousy(unbeknownst to her)...She meets Conan who is also biracial (Irish/Puerto Rican). Unlike Juanita, Conan knows who and what he is... he is very comfortable with his dual heritage and his sense of self.
I enjoyed this story....the author showcased how environment, more than genes, can shape the individuals character. Juanita's journey to self-awareness calls out a sad truth about how color/cultural conflicts within each group shapes self-image and stereotypes.
Overall, the story moved at a good pace...the Romance between Juanita and Conan was old-fashion and sweet...Scooter was an enjoyable character who was going through his own "coming-of-age" dilemma's and he balanced out Juanita's more low-key personality perfectly...I even liked Jorge, with all his treachery, I was looking forward for the eventual confrontation between him and Conan.
Suspenseful and Unpredictable.......2007-04-10
Juanita Lucas is a young woman living in a housing project in Brooklyn. Although she has a very light complexion, she is proud of her blackness, even as she takes a beating from the very sistahs she tries so hard to emulate. Her only friend, Scooter Morrison, is an upwardly mobile brother who also happens to be young, gifted, and . . . gay. While Juanita spends her time finding ways to fit in with the girls in the 'hood, Scooter's frustration over his sexuality makes him an easy target, and in his tough inner-city neighborhood he finds himself catching hell coming and going.
A chance encounter with two fine Puerto Rican men changes Juanita's and Scooter's lives in ways they could never have imagined. There is Conan, a hard-working man who wrestles with both his love for Juanita and his guilt over his brother's death, and Jorge, an unscrupulous bad-boy thug who has no problem using what he's got to get what he wants, until he comes dangerously close to getting scorched by his own flames.
Chocolate Sangria was a fast-paced novel. It was a real page turner. I found myself reading this book rather quickly because I wanted to find out what was going to happen next. Admittedly, the explicit sexual content was a bit much. It was more of a hinderance to the storyline. Had I not committed to reading the book as part of a book club selection, the graphic scenes would've been enough to stop me from reading any further. Some of the things Scooter did were degrading for both black men and homosexuals. At times it made me angry. However, the story itself was good, and overall it was an enjoyable read. I wasn't crazy about the ending because it didn't give me a real sense of closure or "happily ever after."
Okay.......2006-07-11
This book was okay. It was kind of sad and easy to figuare out how it would turn out. Besides that it was an okay book
"A So-So Novel".......2006-03-14
This novel left me disappointed. Ms. Price-Thompson is an excellent storyteller, but I didn't like the dialect of "Aunt Hattie". Not all black people talk like that. "Juanita" and all the other characters were just plain boring.
GOOD BUT NOT GREAT.......2006-02-22
I ENJOYED CHOCOLATE SANGRIA. IT WASNT MY FAVORITE BOOK, BUT IT WAS A GOOD READ. EVEN THOUGH I LOOK A LOT LIKE JUANITA, WE ARE NOTHING ALIKE!! THERE WAS A LOT OF DETAILS IN THE BOOK BUT THE CHARACTERS LACKED SOMETHING. ALL AND ALL AN ENJOYABLE READ!!
