Quantum Geometry: A Statistical Field Theory Approach (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics)
Jan Ambjørn , Bergfinnur Durhuus , and Thordur Jonsson Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 052101736X |
Book Description
This graduate level text describes in a unified fashion the statistical mechanics of random walks, random surfaces and random higher dimensional manifolds with an emphasis on the geometrical aspects of the theory and applications to the quantization of strings, gravity and topological field theory. With chapters on random walks, random surfaces, two-and higher-dimensional quantum gravity, topological quantum field theories and Monte Carlo simulations of random geometries, the text provides a self-contained account of quantum geometry from a statistical field theory point of view. The approach uses discrete approximations and develops analytical and numerical tools. Continuum physics is recovered through scaling limits at phase transition points and the relation to conformal quantum field theories coupled to quantum gravity is described. The most important numerical work is covered, but the main aim is to develop mathematically precise results that have wide applications. Many diagrams and references are included.

Geometric and Topological Methods for Quantum Field Theory: Proceedings of the Summer School Held in Villa De Leyva, Colombia 9 - 27 July 2001
Manufacturer: World Scientific Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9812381317 |
Book Description
This volume offers an introduction to recent developments in several active topics of research at the interface between geometry, topology and quantum field theory. These include Hopf algebras underlying renormalization schemes in quantum field theory, noncommutative geometry with applications to index theory on one hand and the study of aperiodic solids on the other, geometry and topology of low dimensional manifolds with applications to topological field theory, Chern-Simons supergravity and the anti de Sitter/conformal field theory correspondence. It comprises seven lectures organized around three main topics, noncommutative geometry, topological field theory, followed by supergravity and string theory, complemented by some short communications by young participants of the school.

Geometric Methods for Quantum Field Theory
Manufacturer: World Scientific Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9810243510 |
Book Description
Both mathematics and mathematical physics have many active areas of research where the interplay between geometry and quantum field theory has proved extremely fruitful. Duality, gauge field theory, geometric quantization, Seiberg-Witten theory, spectral properties and families of Dirac operators, and the geometry of loop groups offer some striking recent examples of modern topics which stand on the borderline between geometry and analysis on the one hand and quantum field theory on the other, where the physicist's and the mathematician's perspective complement each other, leading to new mathematical and physical concepts and results. This volume introduces the reader to some basic mathematical and physical tools and methods required to follow the recent developments in some active areas of mathematical physics, including duality, gauge field theory, geometric quantization, Seiberg-Witten theory, spectral properties and families of Dirac operators, and the geometry of loop groups. It comprises seven self-contained lectures, which should progressively give the reader a precise idea of some of the techniques used in these areas, as well as a few short communications presented by young participants at the school.

M-Theory and Quantum Geometry (NATO Science Series C:)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792364740 |
Book Description
The fundamental structure of matter and spacetime at the shortest length scales remains an exciting frontier of basic research in theoretical physics. A unifying theme in this area is the quantisation of geometrical objects. The majority of contributions to this volume cover recent advances in superstring theory, which is the leading candidate for a unified description of all known elementary particles and interactions. The geometrical concept of one-dimensional extended objects (strings) has always been at the core of superstring theory, but recently the focus has shifted to include higher-dimensional objects (D-branes), which play a key role in non-perturbative dynamics of the theory.

Methods of Quantization: Lectures Held at the 39. Universitätswochen für Kern- und Teilchenphysik, Schladming, Austria (Lecture Notes in Physics)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540421009 |
Book Description
The present set of lecture notes gives both a status report and a survey of recent advances for the most important quantization methods in the field theories for elementary particle physics. The first part of the book introduces light-cone quantization as an interesting alternative to the commonly used covariant perturbation theory and functional-integral methods. Next, a general formalism for quantizing systems with constraints, the projection-operator approach, is presented and structural aspects of the renormalization problem for gauge invariant field theories are discussed. Finally, the mathematics underlying the functional-integral quantizaion is reviewed.Suitable as a reference for researchers in the field, the book will prove particularly useful for lecturers and gradjuate students in search of additional reading beyond the standard texts on quantum field theory.

Quantization, Classical and Quantum Field Theory, and Theta Functions (Crm Monograph Series, V. 21)
Andrej Tyurin Manufacturer: American Mathematical Society ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0821832409 |
Book Description
This book is written by a well-known expert in classical algebraic geometry. Tyurin's research was specifically in explicit computations to vector bundles on algebraic varieties. This is the only available monograph written from his unique viewpoint.Ordinary (abelian) theta functions describe properties of moduli spaces of one-dimensional vector bundles on algebraic curves. Non-abelian theta functions, which are the main topic of this book, play a similar role in the study of higher-dimensional vector bundles. The book presents various aspects of the theory of non-abelian theta functions and the moduli spaces of vector bundles, including their applications to problems of quantization and to classical and quantum conformal field theories.
The book is an important source of information for specialists in algebraic geometry and its applications to mathematical aspects of quantum field theory.

Locke and the Scriblerians: Identity and Consciousness in Early Eighteenth-Century Britain
Christopher Fox Manufacturer: University of California Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0520058593 |
Book Description
Through a wide-ranging study of primary sources, Christopher Fox identifies and details a decisive moment in the history of the concept of the self. A key figure here is John Locke; the crucial document, his chapter on "Identity and Diversity" added to the second edition of An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1694). Locke's new concept of "identity of consciousness" was hotly debated for the next half century in philosophical, theological, and literary circles, and Fox makes a significant contribution in drawing attention to this controversy. By situating The Memoirs of Scriblerus in the debates, Fox also brings needed attention to a Scriblerian performance that deserves to be better known today. Fox's book is necessary reading for anyone interested in the eighteenth century, in Locke and the Scriblerians, and in the larger history of the concepts of "self" and "consciousness."
