Customer Reviews:
VERY basic stuff.......2007-05-19
For what it is, this book does a good job of introducing newbies to audio production. It claims to be for intermediate recordists too, but that is a stretch. If you have any experience recording anything at all, this book will probably not be very helpful. There is a section near the end that mentions some newer microphone arrays for recording in surround. To me this seems too advanced for beginners, but does not offer enough detail for veterans to really implement. I was disappointed in this book for being so utterly basic, but that could be terrific for other readers who need to be walked through the process setp-by-step.
Good intro to music recording, but nothing extraordinary.......2007-02-12
I'm in the middle of reading this book for an audio production course. It was the assigned text, and while it's not as expensive as many textbooks these days, it's also not a very well produced book. There are no photos, only illustrations that look like they were done on an Apple IIci. The writing is clear, though they repeat information about several topics. My biggest complaint is that it focuses on music recording, while I'm interested in other genres of audio. The authors don't ever acknowledge that you would want to recording something besides music. If you want to learn about music recording and want a very practical approach, this book is a good introduction. But I wish it considered theoretical questions beyond the merely practical.
Good reference.......2006-08-18
This book is somewhat dull to read straight through. It includes alot of details that may not be relevant and gives alot of examples that may be completely useless to the reader. Many concepts and passages are repeated throughout the book. That being said, the book makes for an excellent reference for many circumstances. From studio microphone techniques to recording live events, this book gives in-depth details and offers more than just one suggestion for all situations. It also includes a 4 page sound glossary and a nearly 50 page general glossary. This is a great buy for any non-professional recording studio.

Customer Reviews:
really not so practical.......2003-09-20
Don't get caught by the name of the book. The whole book just tells you the tip of the iceberg... a little of this a little of that and just few stuff is truly practical. If you are totally new in this field, go buy it. Also i have "Modern Recording Techniques" and i noted that they are very similar if not i dare to say they are the same.
Reevaluation.......2000-11-01
After seeing what other people have given 4 and 5 stars to, I definitely have to give Practical Recording Techniques 5 stars! I thought I was supposed to leave some room for growth!
Practical Recording Techniques.......2000-06-18
Here's a useful and comprehensive introduction to professional audio recording aimed primarily at the beginning and intermediate level recording engineer, but useful also for people like me doing home recording. It covers all aspects of equipment, sound, techniques and procedures. In addition to what you'd expect (it's recent enough to cover digital applications), there are sections on spoken word recordings, on-location recording, hum prevention (the electrical, not the oral, variety), how to judge sound quality, and a short but interesting chapter on how an engineer can learn to listen to the art, and not just the sound, of the music being recorded. The Bartletts offer sound advice for how to mic various instruments (well, how would *you* go about micing bagpipes or a hammered dulcimer?). It contains a very useful guide for analyzing and correcting bad sound. Additionally, there are appendices covering the technicalities of dB, SMPTE and a suggested reading list. The glossary is excellent. For someone like me, it filled in all sorts of gaps in my knowledge - now I'm familiar with the Fletcher-Munson effect, I know exactly what an ORTF mic placement is and how to go about clearing up muddy sound. There is little or no input about specific brands or models of gear, but at 458 pages, there's not much room for that, and it's not that kind of book anyway. Thumbs up.

Book Description
Dividing classical and popular music recording into two distinct sections, this book focuses on the special techniques used for recording outside the confines of the studio and shows readers how to interface with sound reinforcement equipment in the hall or club.
Recent developments in portable digital multitrack recorders and high-quality mixers have made on-location recording feasible for all recording engineers. Many bands want to be recorded in concert because they feel that is when they play their best music. The engineer's job is to capture that performance on tape and bring it back live and there's only one chance to get it right.
This book covers all aspects of live recording, with a special section on miking techniques for surround sound. Pre-session procedures, such as power and grounding practice, pre-production meetings, and site surveys are fully examined. On Location Recording Techniques also describes the paperwork required to plan a live recording session. A study of surround miking techniques for both classical and popular music, and of the components needed to build a quality remote recording truck complete this book.
Covers the latest technology
Includes both classical and popular recording techniques
Offers many practical tips and shortcuts for easier setup and takedown

This book is about stereo mike techniques for recording orchestral performances and live concerts, but doesn't provide much info on recording location sound i.e. film sound if that's what you're looking for.

Book Description
The Complete Book of Magnetic Recording Get the very latest and most up-to-date information on every aspect of magnetic recording with the 4th edition of one of TAB's all-time best-sellers. Often referred to as the "Bible" by technicians and engineers working in the magnetic recording industry, the Handbook is practical rather than theoretical in its approach. In the rapidly growing field of magnetic recording, this book is truly the "authority" with easy access to topics of interest and extensive instruction on the equipment and techniques prevalent in the industry. This massive reference volume contains numerous illustrations and three indexes (illustrations, names and terms) for quick cross-referencing. References are also included for further study. Every engineer and technician working in the field of magnetic recording should add the Handbook to their reference shelf.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent "how it works" book.......2002-03-26
I used this book as a reference while developing a MICR reader.
While his work is not directly applicable to discontinuous media, it did open my eyes to some subtle effects that had been giving us problems. Definitely worth a spot on my reference shelf.
He describes also some of the interesting solutions to the problems of finding out exactly what happens during the magnetic recording process.
the illustrations in the handbook.......2000-01-27
I do not like the illustrations in your handbook as well, particularly the jagged lines. Could you do something about it in the next revision ? More suitable for newcomers.
For more mathematical treatment, please try Bertram's Theory of Magnetic Recording. This is a killer book if you are not well versed with undergraduate level engineering electromagnetic theory.
When is the next revision coming out ?
Don't bother with this one........1999-09-15
I found this book to be poorly organized, badly written, and when it came to the physics of magnetism and magnetic materials, absolutley opaque: I've never seen a more incomprehensible account of the difference between B and H anywhere. The bizarre use of the pole concept is utterly out of step with modern magnetic physics. Abbreviations for measurement units are indicated on graph axes without any discussion in the text about what the units mean. The figures are the worst I've ever seen in a technical book, consisting mostly of low-resolution bit maps. I suggest that the author thoroughly review the American Institute of Physics style manual on how to draw figures before doing another edition. It would seem to me that a book of this size (>800 pages) would be able to reveal the linear bit density on a standard 3-1/2" 1.44 MB floppy disk, the orientation of the magnetic moments on the disk tracks, the magnitude of a one-bit magnetic moment, the depth of the magnetized regions in the film, and what encoding scheme is used in a single table or on one page of text. I found extracting such information essentially impossible, either because it did not exist or because it was embedded in unobvious places.

Book Description
Laura Denham’s first novel about a young woman’s willful descent from part-time stripper, to self-employed prostitute, to low-rent S and M film star adroitly sidesteps the expectations inherent in sex-industry tell-alls, opting instead for an aesthetic closer to the edgy, skillfully composed narratives of Mary Gaitskill and Jennifer Belle. Juliet McKenna, the novel’s protagonist, heads to San Francisco just after college, filled with a mix of restless audacity and vulnerability. Her peculiar disposition proves to be relatively harmless at first: topless dancing at the Cherry Tree. But she quickly succumbs to the lucrative possibilities offered by the more insidious elements of the business. Written in concise, thoughtful prose, Have You Seen Me? details Juliet’s exploits with lonely hedonists and sex-crazed reprobates; from Mary, the speed snorting methadone nurse turned born-again environmentalist, to Monty, the bondage-enthusiast son of a Jesuit priest, Juliet sits comfortably amongst inhabitants of an odd world of sleaziness and aspiration. Yet, even as Juliet’s corrupted endeavors bankrupt her spirit, the possibility for renewal remains. And while her eventual regeneration at a commune of radical environmentalists (whose terrorist activities are unbeknownst to her) provides for an entertaining twist in her story, Have You Seen Me? remains a deeply affecting novel about the uncertainty and loneliness of the human soul.
Customer Reviews:
Psychological Games Filling Emptiness.......2006-10-31
The fluid yet scarce way Laura Denham uses words does everything to arrest you. What blows my mind is that she doesn't have to use the typical 'writers tricks.' She just tells her story and it's so arresting you can't read it without wanting to scratch your way out of the hell-hole she describes. Let me start out and say this book is not for the underage crowd.
Our heroine, Juliet, is a prostitute. The first time she has sex her customer warns her "not to give strange men her phone number" (or something like that) and asks her if it was her first time. Turns out it was her second time ever. Yes, that's right- our character only knows "sex for money" and not "sex for sex," which adds a whole other dimension to terms like corruption. She does not try to pump herself up or use any boasting techniques. The complicated thing about the book is that you feel that Juliet just sort of accidentally got into this trade because she didn't know what else to do.
Another thing that stuck out to me is that Juliet has hardly any friends in the book. One friend named Mary who she doesn't even contact that much. The plot consists wholely of Juliet riding around in taxis, stripping, sleeping with strange men, but always returning home where she is alone. She is a strong heroine though and that's what makes the book. I don't think most people could just start doing this sort of thing randomly and never "completely" lose their way. ALthough the "Godlessness" of her situation sort of gave me the chills.
During the book you feel that there is this huge void you are slipping into and there's no point in resisting. Its as though it's a coming of age story where she never even had a chance to find her identity. And of course the perks of the job- namely money, and being forced to play risky psychological games to keep afloat. The main question of the story being "Why does Juliet need these psychological games to fill an emptiness?"
Good book, Good writing.......2005-09-01
I liked Have you Seen me, because I could relate to it. I also liked it because it took place in San Francisco, where I live. I thought the descriptions of a girl graduateing from college and moving on to become a stripper, porn actress, and then prostitute were very accurate. I think the book took a slight turn towards the end though when she tried to get away from everything. It was writeen well and easy to follow. I would recommend it for an afternoon read.
searing, evocative debut explores degradation, redemption.......2002-12-30
Bristling with frightening imagery and evoking both revulsion and admiration, Laura Denham's exceptional debut novel, "Have You Seen Me?" brings both depth and hard-earned wisdom to the coming-of-age genre. Her protagonist, by the time she has graduated from college, has had to endure not only sexual trauma (brought on after a cruel seduction by her father's best friend) but a childhood shorn of family coherence. Juliet has grown up in Santa Cruz, California, a haven for 1960s' flower children who seem to have no clue as to how to raise a child other than permit them to be "free."
Juliet's freedom includes calling her father Tom instead of Dad, suffering through a horrendous bout of hepatitis during high school, and being initiated into sex with a man old enough to be her father. By the time she has graduated from college with a dual major of psychology and dance, Juliet's self-image, never strong, has withered. San Francisco, with its promise of anonymity, provides a near-perfect backdrop for her descent into emotional numbness, physical degradation, and existential isolation. First as a stripper and eventually as a self-employed prostitute, Juliet doesn't so much live as sleepwalk through life. Her self worth erodes so terribly that she identifies with the ruins of the Loma Prieta earthquake: "only things worth rebuilding were repaired. Things that were too shaky to survive were either torn down or simply left alone."
To fill the void of a life without any close human contact, Juliet selects degrading masochism. Her job as a stripper brings her into contact with men whom she despises. The men who ogle her lithe, seemingly child-like body, are "self-centered, style-obsessed, rich spoiled children. I came to hate them...and I despised their divisive, computer-fixated culture." The customers would have "one hand on their persistently full, warm beer, and the other on their persistently full, warm crotch." Though Juliet begrudingly comes to assess the club dancers as "honest, clean, intelligent, friendly women," she eventually abandons dance and descends into pornography and prostitution.
Lacking any model of social responsibility or interpersonal contact based on mutual respect or trust, Juliet thrashes about in an emotional wilderness. Only catastrophy catapults her into the possibility of human redemption, through life in a secluded commune near her childhood home. It is through the artistic integrity of her creator that Juliet's struggle for genuine self understanding and acceptance gains universal status. Laura Denham's portrait of a young woman tortured by demons -- some imposed by wrongdoers, others self-inflicted -- is extraordinary in its emotional scope and inspiring glimpses into a personality fractured by life.
Ms. Denham's talents encompass much more than characterization and powerful narrative. The author's imagery sparkles throughout the novel. One character's eyes are "two polished dimes dotted in the middle with a single drop of Indian ink. Aluminum with tiny holes cut into the center. Littler sterling planets. Mercury...a bad poet's day out." A purportedly healthy yogurt drink "tastes like something that might have dripped out from between my legs, only flavored with strawberries." Ms. Denham can flat-out write.
"Have You Seen Me?" is a slim novel with great impact. Featuring a powerfully rendered protagonist, skilled dialogue and uncompromising glimpses of the seedier side of urban life, Laura Denham's first work is but a promise of an exciting literary career.
Catcher in the Rye meets Hustler Magazine!.......2002-11-30
Very funny and disturbing. Northern Californian Urban Cowgirl chick drifts in to the sketchier margins of the San Francisco underground before one mishap after another has her heading back to the hills to a quasi commune in the Santa Cruz mountains.
My only problems with the book are that the narrator, Juliet, seems too smart for the recklessness she exhibits. (And the plot slows a little in the 3rd quarter).
That said, I still couldn't put it down. Flawed, but fascinating.
TRYING TO FIND HERSELF.......2002-11-21
Juliet is wondering who she is and ends up in San Francisco's tenderloin district. First she is astripper at a "no touch' sex clubwhere she dances and strips. Shecan sit with the customers and talk but no sex allowed. Thenshe breaks the rules and becomesa prostitute for a lot more easymoney as she calls it. She andMary become friends and they end up in a commune, unaware of itsreal purpose. Mary's parents kidnap her to take her home butJuliet has no one to save her until a friend of her father shows up.She returns to her original hometown wondering what to do next. This is Denham's fist novel and she doesn't do much to encourageJuliet to develop depth of character or learn much from herexperiences. It reads more like ascript to develop and explore butmaybe Denham herself will grow from this first attempt and come out fighting in her next book.

Arizona loves 'neat-o-stuff' and Tim Plumer.......2005-08-23
I was fortunate to meet Tim a few years ago when looking for
some 'neat-o-stuff' in Hallowell. I started out a customer but was glad to become his friend. I loved hearing the stories when I would visit; the book is a must read for people who enjoy life.
Tim knows his craft very well!
From Jerry in South Georgia to Tim Plumer.......2005-08-20
My wife and I had the pleasure of meeting Tim last summer while on vacation in Maine. We spent many entertaining hours with him in his store, Dukenfields, the home of Neato Stuff, in Hallowell.
Buying his book was a MUST after listening to his stories. Tim is a master of entertaining and story telling. Each chapter is a book unto itself. This book is a must read for anyone who is need of a good belly laugh.
From Caitie For My Dear Friend Tim.......2005-08-20
I met Tim in a chat room a couple of years ago and soon we were talking on the phone. And yes,he has that Maine Accent. He told me of his book and I asked if he would send me one and I would gladly pay for it. When it arrived I could hardly wait to start to read it. From the 1st page I was captured and convulsed with laughter. At first I thought no one could have lived this life and survived but knowing Tim as I do now I can envision every antic. He is a man who was meant to entertain people with his stories. I laughed till tears rolled down my cheeks. This book is down to earth and just like the man who wrote it. I am looking forward to a next book and when it is finished I will be one of the first in line to get it. My one wish in life is to go to Maine and meet this wonderful story teller and see his antique shop. Don't pass up the opportunity to read this book. Well worth the time and money.
from stephen hawking to timmy plummer.......2005-08-18
like the forgoing reviewer, i purchased my copy of this book in timmy's tiny trinket store. over a beer and cigs, we cracked jokes and talked about my incredbly sexy mainer girlfriend. i walked away from the store with a buzz, a new antique cig lighter and a copy of his book. having now read the book, i realize that the moment i stepped out of the door of his store--buzzed, T&A on the mind, and smelling like a day's work--this was exactly the point, the feeling, the light timmy wishes to spread both in word and spirit. the book is as delightfully funny as one should expect from its title. it is brief and small enough to fit atop the tank, between the wall and the raised lid...unlike those cumbersome physics books from which timmy has culled this masterpiece!
i need more!
As Good a Time as If You'd Been Drinking at the Bar.......2005-02-03
I had the delight to purchse this book from Tim Plumer himself, up in Hallowell, Maine. He brings the reader into his stories, letting them in on the jokes as if the reader were sitting on the stool next to him at Dukenfields, watching him sip his beer among his colection of trains, antiques and "neat-o stuff". The humor is sidesplitting, and the stories are immensly relatable. Despite the grammatical erros and obvious lack of proofreading before print, this is a must buy book. Buy, read, and enjoy.

Book Description
Don't do anything that will get you noticed. For as long as Toby Harwood can remember, it has been one new school after another. Never a chance to make friends, never a chance to belong. Now here's another new school, and, as always, a new name. And, as always, the order to be invisible. Don't do anything that will get you noticed. This school proves to be a doorway to a different life. Toby is noticed by new friends, and new enemies. Most important, there are ways to get answers to the old questions. But does Toby really want to find these answers? Will the new friends be loyal once the family's terrible secrets are revealed?
Customer Reviews:
Terrible book from terrible author.......2007-07-30
This is the WORST book I've read this year. "Have U Seen Me?" by Linda Phelps, or Linda Smith, who curiously is the first person to offer a review of her own book right here using a different name!(this isn't news, the author admits to it in her whykuffar website, under thread called "WK author published!", where she says "I have reviewed quite a few books there, and thought I owed myself one. Notice I did NOT give the book the maximum 5 stars. I was sorta honest.) Sorta honest? sorta caught too.
Why the author would review her own book under a different name is beyond me, and Amazon should do something about this, it undermines the review process.
About the book however, while I admire the authors ambition to relate a touching story, especially since I have two daughters of my own who match the age of the heroine protagonist, the monotone details and subplots undermine any compelling portions of the tale. The other thing that put me off was the undertone of anti-Church expressions, though not prevalent, feel out of place in this book. Great opportunity lost since the basis seemed interesting, but in the end, too many serious shortcomings. There an old saying, that goes - Don't know much about writing, but know what I like. What I don't like is a good yarn buried under an avalanche of trivial irrelevant matters.
Twists and turns.......2007-07-27
The main character in this book is facing problems not usually faced by teenagers; how to have friends for the first time, how to deal with parents who insist on a very restricted life style.
No TV, no movies, no newspapers, not radio, and no friends. "Do not draw attention to yourself! Or we will leave this place."
The reason for this strange lifestyle is the mystery the main character must solve. In the process, she grows in knowledge of the world and of her family's special circumstances.
I found this book to be fast moving, filled with memorable characters (some of whom are dogs!) I think most young girls would enjoy this story.
