Book Description
In May 1998 a hundred renowned scientists from 20 different countries met at the Max-Planck-Institut für Aeronomie to communicate their latest results and ideas in astrophysical and space plasma, as a follow-up to previous similar meetings which were held in Varenna, Abastumai, Potsdam, Toki and Guaruja. The main papers emerging from this meeting are collected in this volume.
They deal with fundamental plasma phenomena, particle and radiation processes in astrophysics and space physics as the origin of magnetic activity, the basic mechanisms of particle acceleration and plasma heating common to plasma in galaxies and at the sun as well as in planetary magnetospheres. New observational results from YOHKOH, SOHO and other missions are presented. Using these, the basic physical processes leading to coronal heating and solar/stellar wind acceleration are discussed. Other topics are the microphysics of shock waves and transport phenomena in collisionless plasmas and the physics of thin plasma boundaries.
The volume also treats the ionic composition of plasma and dust in the Universe and their observability in the solar system. A CD-ROM is attached which adds a valuable multimedia component, illuminating results of observations, theory and simulations.
Everyone interested in astrophysical plasmas, its radiation and charged particle aspects, and advanced or even beginning students will find references to nearly all modern aspects of plasma astrophysics and space physics as well as an overview of current research results.

Book Description
This book provides an exhaustive account of the origin and dynamics of cosmic rays. Divided into three parts, it first gives an up-to-date summary of the observational data, then -- in the following theory section -- deals with the kinetic description of cosmic ray plasma. The underlying diffusion-convection transport equation, which governs the coupling between cosmic rays and the background plasma, is derived and analyzed in detail. In the third part, several applications of the solutions of the transport equation are presented and how key observations in cosmic ray physics can be accounted for is demonstrated. The applications include cosmic ray modulation, acceleration near shock waves and the galactic propagation of cosmic rays. While the book is primarily of interest to scientists working at the forefront of research, the very careful derivations and explanations make it suitable also as an introduction to the field of cosmic rays for graduate students.
Customer Reviews:
Good book for the field, but..........2002-12-13
Covers cosmic ray astrophysics pretty well, but I've opted to stick with volume 1 of Longair for the grad class is cosmic rays which I'm teaching this Spring. Why? This book seems to have huge gaps in its coverage and too much of a European focus with references. Still, it's a good book, and anyone working in cosmic rays is bound to buy it in the end...
Book Description
This book builds on the fluid and kinetic theory of equilibria and waves presented in a companion textbook, Basic Space Plasma Physics (by the same authors), but can also serve as a stand-alone text. It extends the field covered there into the domain of plasma instability and nonlinear theory.
The book provides a representative selection of the many possible macro- and microinstabilities in a space plasma, from the Rayleigh-Taylor and Kelvin-Helmholtz to electrostatic and electromagnetic kinetic instabilities. Their quasilinear stabilization and nonlinear evolution and their application to space physics problems are treated. The chapters on nonlinear theory include nonlinear waves, weak turbulence and strong turbulence, all presented from the viewpoint of their relevance to space plasma physics. Special topics include auroral particle acceleration, soliton formation and caviton collapse, anomalous transport, and the theory of collisionless shocks.

Book Description
The scope of this book is not typical of the majority of texts in cosmic plasma physics. The consecutive consideration of physical principles, starting from the most general ones, and simplifying assumptions allows students interested in astronomy to find the answers to two key questions: (1) what approximation is the simplest, but still sufficient for the description of a phenomenon in cosmic plasmas, and (2) how to build an adequate model of this phenomenon.
Astronomers of the future will need such tools. Astronomy of the future will become an increasingly more precise science, similar to physics or plasma physics. This is what the book aims to teach.

Book Description
This book summarizes the results from the detection of cosmic rays at the surface and in the lower atmosphere of Earth during the fifty years since the invention of the neutron monitor by John A. Simpson in 1948. The properties of solar and galactic cosmic rays in the heliosphere, such as Forbush decreases, modulations by solar and heliosphere parameters, the physical processes that govern them, and their connection to Space Weather, are reviewed. This interdisciplinary compilation provides links between cosmic ray physics, geophysics, terrestrial climate, and human activity and health.

Book Description
This book is the first monograph dealing with dusty and self- gravitational plasmas. It is focused on collective effects in the dusty plasma, with allowance for gravitational interaction between dust grains which was not given much attention in the literature until now. Other features include charging of dust particles under various physical conditions and the motion of dust particles under the joint action of electromagnetic and gravitation fields (gravitoelectrodynamics). Waves in isotropic and magnetized dusty plasmas are considered in both linear and nonlinear theory. Wave scattering and various plasma instabilities are discussed. The theoretical developments are tied to astrophysical observations, in particular the role played by dusty plasma in the structure formation of planetary rings is analyzed. Several theories are reviewed and a new hypothesis for the origin of `spokes' in Saturn's rings is presented.
Audience: The book is addressed to graduate and research physicists working in plasma physics and astrophysics.

Book Description
The dynamo effect has been one of the most challenging in modern physics. It has also been one of the most important, since it is believed that the Earth's magnetic field, that of the Sun and astrophysical magnetic fields in general are produced by dynamos resulting from the motion of electrically conducting fluids. Although predicted by theory, the existence, and more specifically, the dynamics of the dynamo have been controversial for many years. Problems have centred around the difficulty of producing a dynamo in the laboratory, and difficulty in solving the equations.
Working laboratory dynamos have now been reported. New ideas have emerged to explain the Earth's and Solar dynamos and their 'strange' evolution. Significant progress has been reported in understanding dynamo action in a variety of astrophysical and laboratory fluid flows. The variety and originality of the presentations here make the book an invaluable source for scientists and students interested in the dynamo problem: physicists, astrophysicists, geophysicists, mathematicians and others.

Sisters finding their own way.......2007-06-08
London and Madrid La Mira are the twin daughters of an ultra rich man. They have never had to work for a living, get what ever they want and are generally spoiled rotten. Then there grandmother does something to change them. She cuts them off. She used to give them five or six figure checks for Christmas for them to blow, but instead she desides to hand over their clubs to the managers and make them actually work to know what real life is like.
After some funny setbacks London and Maddy decide to do something different. Will it work out? Will they be better people? Read The Perils of Sisterhood
majority rules.......2007-04-24
i have to agree with the majority on this one. the book had such great potential, but when the very first page had a woman talking about getting off while riding in a limo and had several swear words, i should have known. i didn't like any of the characters, it was very predictable, and the stereotypes were very offensive to me. there was only one thing i predicted that would happen that didn't and by that time, i didn't care.
the book was too talky, using long boring conversations to move the story along. i'm not a writer, so i have no idea how it should have been done, but this is obviously how NOT to do it.
Absolutely horrendous!.......2007-03-09
I applaud any reader that made it a quarter of the way into the book. I seriously thought about throwing it in a trash can I was passing by. It is probably the worst book I have ever read and I didn't get past chapter 2. I have never heard that many curse words used in so few pages - it would have done some thugs and delinquents proud. I have no idea why anyone would print so offensive a book. The characters are repulsive and I can't begin to guess why anyone should care if they are redeemed or not. It is crude and just plain awful so don't let the cute cover fool you. It's not that type of book.
Beware of the Purse Dog Princesses.......2007-01-26
Though actually, I don't think any purse dogs *were* featured in the book.
If you're fascinated by trendy parties and the misdeeds of spoiled celebrities, you'll probably get a kick out of this book. IMO, it was an interesting world to visit, even if I wouldn't want to live there. (No matter how big my annual check was!)
While the sisters started and stayed rather unlikeable quite far into the book, by the end they showed definite signs of becoming human. I thought Gamma Angel was great, though I did wonder what took her so long to put her foot (and pen) down.
At least in fiction, there's hope that ANYONE can turn her life around!
Save your 7 dollars..........2007-01-09
I generally do not write reviews but I was incredibly offended by the book, so much so that I stopped reading it about 3/4th's of the way through. What had the potential to be a funny book is only marginally humorous, but for a light beach read I think this would be ok if it weren't for the ignorance it contains. Here are a few "choice" excerpts:
"..Never employ minorities, it makes you look racist. Even though we're better than all those african americans, hispanics, iranians..and God knows what other riff raff the Democrats are letting into this country....even though Mexicans are the BEST at landscaping"
From a black man in the book who is apparently stuck in slavery times in 2006:
"Bo knows a story. 'Bout how a turtle be beating a rabbit in a race. The rabbit he be fast, the turtle, he be slow. But de bunny done take itself a nap and de turtle crawled on right by him while he be snoozin'....Bo likes dat dere story"
There is no excuse for that and this book is not worth the read.
