Nice Origami book........2007-01-11
Lang's book on Origami is a good buy for anyone interested in this ancient art of paper folding. It covers models that are simple to fold all the way to models that require more skill. It also includes quite a large variety of animals to explore.
A great book full of variety!!.......2006-08-04
This is the first origami book I have bought,Origami Zoo. Before I got this book I had to print heaps of stuff off the internet, and before long I had a huge collection of stuff I put in a folder. I soon found out that all the models I had printed out were way too hard for me, even though I'm around the intermediate to advanced level!! As cool as they may sound, the Biplane always confused me, the Bee always ripped and the Alien always became too small and thick.
But then I discovered Amazon.com. Here there were millions of choices of origami books, but I chose to get "Origami Zoo, an Amazing Collection of folded paper animals." This book was at my level exactly!!
My fav models are, so far:
- The Penguin. Even though this is one of the easiest, it still looks lifelike side-on.
- The Owl. This model is also 2D, but it perches on a thin rod, and looks lifelike as well.
- The Duck. This model is a particularly cute 3D one!
- The Sea Turtle. This model is both fun to make and cool to look at!!
- The Fox. This model is rather easy, 3D, and lifelike!
None of the models in this book are very easy. Most of them are at the intermediate level, but the last 10 or so models are complex. I still haven't gotten to the real complex models yet, but when I do, I hope I have a lot of large origami paper on hand!!
This book contains info at the start, about folds, paper, designing models and so on.
I would recommend this book to people who like to make a variety of animals, not just plain four legged animals, but insects and sea creatures as well!!
Lots of animals - Intermediate to Advanced.......2005-08-21
There is a great selection of animals to make in this book. Some are very advanced and complicated. Others are easier and more familiar. If you are a beginner, but are familiar with folds and instructions, it is worth giving it a try for a challenge.
Absolute excellence... Don't Miss!.......2003-07-02
Even though the final models are *extremely* complex, the book begins with very interesting texts about origami origins, evolution and approaches to creation; and the models go in progression from the very simplest ones. So actually this is an excellent "transition" book - if you have some experience with origami and have the ambition to try more complex stuff, there cannot be a better book than this one to guide you. The diagrams are crystal clear, and so are the indications. I got this book when I was 11 (I'm 24 now), and it is still every bit as amazing an enjoyable as back then!!
ABSOLUTELY Awesome...but CHALLENGING!!!!.......2003-04-19
Origami Zoo is yet another book my boys and I got from our local library. This book is by two of the BEST Origamists around, in our humble opinion.
We will be watching for it on ebay. While we are all beginner/intermediate folders, we are AMAZED by this book. There is nothing in it we don't like, but only a couple so far we've been able to figure out. It is WELL written. All the basic folds one needs, are clearly shown and explained at the front. While it has black and white illustrations, they are fairly easy to follow, and the written instructions are very good, IF you already know something about Origami. There are very nice & clear pictures at the beginning of each model, to show you how it looks, finished. I like that.
If you are intermediate to advanced, I would say this book will keep you busy for MONTHS, maybe years.
FUN, EXCITING, "CHALLENGING" ! I can't wait to get past the cool Dolphin, which I got pretty quick. If you are just starting out, don't be like us, find an easier book to begin with. Highly recommended!!

Curiosity & Surprise.......2007-09-04
My son, almost two, loves lift/flap books. He was able to learn and say each animal quickly; In fact, he has almost memorized each animal before we lift the flap. He also has learned to associate the animals in the book with animals at the "real" zoo. One of my son's favorite books.
Cute, but for me it's MOTS.......2007-07-20
More of the Same: My 14 month old likes Peek-A-Boo Zoo better (the La Maze book) and also Goodnight Gorilla. But she likes this one as well. It guess we just have too many books on her shelves that involve recognizing and naming the zoo animals. And, there is ALWAYS an elephant and a giraffe involved.
Fun with Adjectives.......2007-07-04
This book is a fantastic and fun way to teach young children early adjectives and literacy skills. Discover a different animal under each flap! The repetitive script will encourage sentence completion and sight reading.
Little girl loves it.......2007-06-30
This is one of our favorite books. We can't read it enough and she has learned all of the animals names from the book. I would highly recomend this book to anyone with toddlers.
caution with adopted children.......2007-06-29
As a mother of an adopted child and a psychologist, I am concerned about the message this book sends. The child in the book wants a pet, but because they are unacceptable, he repeatedly sends them back. I want my daughter to know that nothing about her is unacceptable, and nothing could ever make me want to "send her back." The book may be great for children in other situations, but I think it sends the wrong message to adopted children.

A hit!.......2007-09-23
This series is wonderful! Our two-year-old absolutely loves the Baby Loves Jazz series. We bought a few to start out, then ended up buying the whole set. Two months after acquiring them, she is still enamored and requests to listen to them and read them every day. Her favorites? Well, these are the words we hear most often: "Mommy, read Duck and Miles?" or "Daddy, listen to Duck and Miles?" Philly Joe is also high on the list. I recommend them all. The books stand out on their own, but the music is what makes this series really shine. For example, on Duck Ellington's CD, he does a great Monk style on one track, then switches to great impression of Coltrane's classic quartet on the next track, with a very nice McCoy Tyner impression. Lots of variety and high quality make this series worthwhile (though I could have done without Louis Lion's potty tune). Don't forget the Go Baby Go CD as well (a stand-alone CD without a book), which is perhaps a notch above the music on the book CDs. The ABC tune is her favorite on that one.
Toddler Loves the Duck.......2007-08-13
When my son hears this CD he calms down immediately. It is like magic. We had the CD in the car for a long trip and whenever he started getting fussy, we put it on. Within seconds he was bopping his head along to the music. I do not know what it is about it that he loves so much - but we are buying more in the series.
Baby loves it.......2007-05-22
My tenth-month old absolutely loves this CD. She crawls over to the radio, stands up and starts bopping to the music whenever we play it. She loves the animal sounds as well. We can't play it during dinnertime, however, since she gets distracted and wants to get down from the high chair to dance.

Zoo Flakes ABC.......2004-12-12
This is such a great book! For kids, for coffee table, for people all ages. I can hardly wait to make my own circus. The instructions look easy to follow, but even if I never get around to picking up the scissors, I'll enjoy looking at the book.
What a great book!.......2003-11-10
My Children loved this book! Each Zoo Flake is so clever. My kids couldn't wait to make their own! I had to help my four year old with the folding and cutting, but the older kids did great on their own. They have asked if this could be "a Christmas thing" we do every year.
What a clever book, and not just for kids!.......2003-05-01
In this enchanting book, the author has created "zoo flakes," or paper snowflakes cut into animal kaleidoscope shapes, for each letter of the alphabet. What time and patience this process must have taken! These are not crude cutouts of rough animal shapes, but highly detailed silhouettes of unicorns, foxes (foxen?), and more. I encourage you to click on the book cover picture above so you can enlarge it and get a glimpse of the animal shapes shown on the cover. Great as an alphabet book for kids or a fun book for adults to look through -- it would be a unique conversation piece on a coffee table. It also includes directions at the end for making zoo flakes.

For Adults in Touch with their Inner-Child and with Patience.......2000-01-26
I received this book as a gift at the age of 30. Although it looked like a children's book, I soon discovered, by reading the introduction and, later, the instructions that this was a book for adults who retain the childhood joy and excitment of constructing THINGS. The book consists of seven do-it-yourself, 3-D cardboard constructions which require detailed attention and careful instruction, the latter is well explained in the book and the former must be a personality trait. It is a humorous, fun and challenging book that requires patience and time to complete each of the projects. I do not recommend it for kids or adults with a two-minute attention-span. But if you or someone you know is likely to devote time and effort, whether for fun or procrastination (as was my case in the middle of a thesis), this book will supply a great deal of wholesome entertainment and give one a sense of fulfillment at the end of each accomplished project, especially if they work (all of mine did!). The actual constructions make for great gifts and they are certainly conversation pieces in any home as they are eccentric, funny and aesthetically pleasing. I regret that Paul Spooner does not have more such fun currently in print for those of us who enjoy learning a little physics while we build silly gadgets that bring a smile to anyone who encounters the finished product and some pride to those who bothered and enjoyed building them.

Attendance at the local zoo is down, and the animals are in danger of losing their home. Desperate, the animals come up with a highly unorthodox, but wonderfully creative, plan to save themselves and the zoo.

A Must Have for Your Child's Library.......2006-12-18
I bought this wonderful book for my five-year-old granddaughters and after reading it, wished I had bought one for myself as well! They were completely enthralled with the fine art illustrations and story of the Metro Park Zoo animals working together to jazz up their appearance to save their zoo from closing. The rhythmic cadence makes it a delight for both reader and listener. The story sends an important message of what imaginative thinking and teamwork by little critters can accomplish. The children not only loved the story, but also savored each of the beautiful and enticing illustrations. This book is a must have for your child's library.
A delightful book.......2006-12-15
What child wouldn't love to have this book? It is a delight. The illustrations are wonderful. Although the book is recommended for ages 6 to 10, younger children will be enchanted with the pictures and story. It can be a wonderful tool for teaching shapes and colors. A great addition to every library.
A Visual Language for Kids.......2006-09-26
Zoolidays features absolutely amazing watercolors and imaginative illustrations. You are treated to a whole zoo full of incredible, artful creatures. The characters paint themselves full of intricate designs. This book gives children a whole new visual language--one where they learn about pattern and color, shape and design. It is stunning, and I highly recommend it! For young child artists, this is a must have book. One that will inspire them to make their own creative works of art.

What's the oldest subject in art? It's not lily pads or naked maidens, but animals. They were depicted in Paleolithic cave drawings, in Egyptian tomb paintings, and in ancient Roman and Egyptian art. Compiled by art historian Edward Lucie-Smith, Zoo, with reproductions of more than 300 animal-centric artworks and brief chapter introductions by the author, offers a colorful, compelling introduction to this enormous subject.
In chapters such as "In the Jungle," "Creatures of the Air," and "Microcosmos," Lucie-Smith brings together similar animal subjects, revealing how disparate cultures and artists have viewed and mythologized other living creatures in radically different ways. He places, for example, ivory Inuit carvings of polar bears near an image of a polar bear in a 16th-century Dutch illustration: in the carvings, the bears embrace; in the illustration, the lone bear is a dangerous predator.
The smaller-than-average format of Zoo, seven-by-five inches, means many of the reproductions here are details of a larger piece, or are larger works that have been reduced to fit into a small space. This may frustrate some serious art viewers, but the average reader will appreciate how much terrific art has been fit into this lively, manageable volume. --Maria Dolan
Customer Reviews:
Frustrating.......1999-04-20
This book is as annoying, frustrating, and disappointing as it is beautiful. So many of the images are reproduced in postage-stamp size or, if larger, only as a detail. I just can't imagine why anyone would choose to torture us by presenting an incredibly splendid variety of work, half of which can't be seen. The design, layout, and sumptuous color all contribute to the visual beauty of the book; however, it is at the expense of the art itself.
A magical bestiary tour for art lovers.......1998-10-25
Zoo is a small-in-size book, but it is brimming over with clever juxtapositions of styles, periods, techniques of making art about animals. We are again indebted to Lucie-Smith for spicing this beautifully designed, written and illustrated treatise with works by contemporary artists who are perhaps not yet known to the world at large in the company of their famous colleagues. How often are we allowed to discover new images as we leaf through pages of old favorites from the masters, from antiquity, from established 20th Century artists? The unifying element is in the chapter divisions; each chapter studies a different animal group. This little gem is a perfect book for art afficiandos who think they've seen it all, as well as for animal lovers and scholars, and people who simply love fine art admixed with erudite writing.

I LOVE THIS BOOK.
a delightful and long awaited dollmaking book!.......2001-07-31
This book is illustrated with many magnificent and easily followed directions. You can really make a doll that is more meaningful then all others because you have made it with your own hands. The authors step by step instructions are so simple to follow! Your finished product is your own masterpiece, thanks to Doris. Bravo, Doris.
Okay for Paper MacHe.......2001-07-22
I'm not really interested in Paper MacHe but I've been a dollmaker for quite some time and am very interested in learning more about Paperclay. There is another book that is supposedly the best for Paperclay - "Sculpting Doll in Paperclay" by Robert McKinley but it's sold out and difficult to find - so I opted for this one. I found this book to be fairly similar in techinique to many other dollmaking books in other media. There wasn't all that much that made it stand apart. I guess if you're very interested in Paper MacHe, then this is the book for you. If you're wanting to learn more about Paperclay techniques, skip this book and look for the one by McKinley instead.
Great for the beginner, enough technical, great instructions.......1999-09-06
I am new to doll-making but not paper mache. I found I was moving to dolls and came across this book. It's very good technically and the photos are excellent. The methods are great and well thought out and explained. I have just begun playing with the paper clay product and this gives it a good testimonial. Good job! Also, Ms. Gottilly's dolls are fabulous!

Every Media, Every Skill Level.......2000-06-02
This book offers a great variety of options for 3D projects with all the information to get your started, over what ever fear you might have and into the creative fun that can be had! The author starts with essentials, paper mache, styrofoam and brown paper that anyone can use and shows some wonderful projects for beginners. They include excellent masks, wonderful creapy creatures. Some of the urethane foam work is completely unexpected and not such a common starting point for most people. The author includes wire framing, puppets - just an incredible assortment. I purchased this book for myself and love it, but it would have been great to have when I had children around looking for things to do. Truly a book for all ages

The Contemporary Craft of Paper Mache.......2000-05-12
Paper Mache is not just for children anymore! I love this book. The book has easy to follow instructions. The projects are great. This is a must for all paper macher's and want-to-be paper macher's.
Sophisticated, contemporary artistry from paper........1998-05-06
This book is for the sculptor in you. The authors describe all of the materials used in the craft and present the pros and cons of each. Bravo! There is a good deal of information in its chapters, but the writing is so clear, it is quite easy to undersand. The photos of finished objects d'art present the projects literally in their best light. The photos are also accompanied by illustrations in 3-D. It's a beautiful book presenting the indigenous, the contemporary, and the commonplace in forms that the papier mache crafter can do. I found the the "how to" sections to be outstanding.

Love it!.......2002-01-19
I really like this book.
It's easy to read and understand .
I made the dog armature witout any trouble. I did need to change the head somewhat though for the breed I wanted.
I am not a cat person but that cat planter is just too cute and I will probably make that.
The only thing I didn't like about this book is the author recommends buying paper pulp mix and I think that is a waste of money when it's simple to make your own.
But
I still love this book!
it has some great projects and lots of great tips too!
A true learning experience =).......1999-11-25
Our school used this book for art class! We're a little alternative school and everyone loved the projects....we had a hard time just choosing one =) It was easy for us to come to class day after day and work on projects for an hour n want to even work more on them....we all became really proud of the projects this book helped us make =)
Fantastic Fun!.......1999-08-17
A ton of really creative and fun projects. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and there are lots of photos. Highly recommended!
Excellent ideas and instructions for modern projects........1998-05-06
This book begins with the basics, including an explanation of materials and techniques used. There are great color photos, and the book shows the development of many projects step by step. The book is not targeted at small children - there are other books that are. A good quarter of the finished projects, however, are appealing to children and perhaps, the kids can help out at times. This book is for pre-teen through adult, and the instructional design and photography offer tips to the beginner or the advanced. Only one criticism, the projects in the book are made with newspaper as the paper of choice, when tissue paper that is matte on one side and shiny on the other, i.e., reinforced with special fibers would be an easier medium to work with, more durable overall, and more "finished" looking. I am not a purist, I just want the results of my labor to look terrific! Good luck!
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book!.......2003-09-07
Beautiful examples, very clear instructions with drawings of the steps. First 66 pages are all on techniques. The rest gets into actual things to make like bowls, frames, jewelry etc. Quite an inspiration.
What a beautiful art form.......2003-01-09
I would recommend any of Juliet Bawdens books. While in a friend art store a few years ago I saw some bowls like the ones Ms Bawden makes and was intrigued and I admit I said to myself that I could make similar bowls. Had I had this book to begin with I also admit that the journey would have been much easier. I also like the fact that you can use things around the home or inexpensive items as molds. Be it deflate type balls, big cones, or even balloons blown up. And if you take the time and are willing to follow her wisdom you will discover you can make high end pieces that would fit in well within any quality home.
Terrific , Informative, & Inspiring!.......2002-01-13
Great book!
I love the pictures, especially pages 128 &129 of the life size paper mache people. They are awesome!
The recipe for pulp is the best I have ever used.
My papier mache bible............2001-09-25
After picking up this book I became enthralled with papier mache. (BTW, Angel wrote a very accurate review!) This book touches on a variety of techniques for both small and large papier mache objects. The supplies needed are listed clearly, the photographs of the project representing each technique are inspiring, and the instructions are easy to follow while still allowing for experimentation and personal expression. This is just an awesome book!
Everything you need to know about papier mache.......2000-06-06
This is a wonderful book that teaches you everything you need to know about making papier mache objects. Throughout the book you find many full-color photos of beautiful and unique artwork.
The book starts out with a brief history of papier mache as well as discussion of modern folk art practices. Then equipment and supplies, including choosing a mold, are covered. Several techniques including pulp making, covering a mold, using a wire armature, forming a plaster mold, creating a lino print, using a gesso base and adding a rim, handle or spout are explained. Instructions are step-by-step and include simple illustrations.
The techniques are then used in the projects. The projects include a box with lid, frame, plaque, bangle bracelet, hat, carnival mask, doll and figure. The projects are not "do exactly as I do". There are no templates and such. They simply give you basics of construction and allow you to add your own personality and creativity to the artwork.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for Kids and Kid-Like craftspeople, 2 thumbs Up........1998-05-12
My son and I have been looking for a book just like this one, that shows not only how to make the papier mache but some of the tricks in how to construct the physical structures for building the pieces. We are happy to find this informative book. My wife is a teacher of little folks, and as soon as we master the techniques, I'm sure there will be projects at school. We will be working on the NBA puppets...you may have seen some on TV as of late...we will let you know how these puppets turn out...I'm an architect/designer/artist...and hope to use this medium in some serious projects as well as the fun ones. Thanks...Norm Catlett...ncatlett@hdrinc.com
