          Book Description

Contrary to monographs on non-linear optics this book concentrates on problems of self-organization in various important contexts. The reader learns how patterns in non-linear optical systems are created and what theoretical methods can be applied to describe them. Next, various aspects of pattern formation such as associative memory, information processing, spatio-temporal instability, photo refraction, and so on are treated. The book addresses graduate students and researchers in physics and optical engineering.

          Ugly Girl

All right, Ugly Girl made a mistake. I'd told my mom what I'd heard in the cafeteria, and she'd told Dad. Evidently. I'd thought for sure they would want me to speak up for the truth.

"A seasoned pro from the world of adult literature turns her keen observer's eye to young-adult realism, with notable success. Honest and penetrating" (Kirkus Reviews). Matt Donaghy has always been a BIG MOUTH. But it's never gotten him in trouble -- until one day when two detectives escort him out of class for questioning. Matt has been accused of threatening to blow up Rocky River High School. Ursula Riggs has always been an UGLY GIRL. A loner with fierce, staring eyes, Ursula has no time for petty high school stuff like friends and dating -- or at least that's what she tells herself. Ursula is content with minding her own business. And she doesn't even really know Matt Donaghy. But Ursula is the only person who knows what Matt really said that day ¿ and she is the only one who can help him. In her first novel for young adults, acclaimed author Joyce Carol Oates has created a provocative and unflinching story of friendship and family, and of loyalty and betrayal. "A thought-provoking, character-driven drama" (Booklist, starred review). "A fast-moving, timely, compelling story" (School Library Journal, starred review).

          5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised.......2007-04-22

This was my first Oates book so I had no idea what to expect. What I got was a book with very well written characters and a good premise. Both main characters are completely believable and their friendship is described i a very good way. The parts focusing on "Ugly girl" are written in first person and Oates really manages to get the right voice for a teenage girl. Or at least it felt authentic to me, but I'm admittedly not a teenage girl.

The book also has its satirical moments and overall a good understanding of human nature. "Big Mouth and Ugly Girl" is a great read for kids and adults alike.

Big Mouth and Ugly Girl is a book about a boy who is allegedly accused of stating that he is going to blow up the school. A girl named Ursula comes to his rescue when she testifies on the behalf that he didn't do it. This boy, Matt, and Ursula develop a special relationship that has its ups and downs throughout this book.
My favorite part of this book is when Ursula and Matt go to a kid's house to see if he took Matt's dog. I think this is a funny part. It shows a whole different side of the characters. I also liked it because the kid that they were "persecuting" had such a smart attitude towards them that it made it funny.
I would recommend this book to a few people. I would recommend it to people who are interested in teen life and drama and maybe people who like relationship stories. Other than that I wouldn't really recommend it. The book was a little slow moving, but once I got to a good part it was hard to put down. Also this book was kind of following the people involved in the plot but not enough about the plot.

This book is about finding out what rumors could lead to. You always have to be careful with what you say, you might endup in a tight squeez like matt donaghy.
What you will find inside this book:
          - respect
          - support
          - rumors
          - truth
          - friendship
          - depression
          - and a change of heart in the characters.
Have fun reading this book :D

2 out of 5 stars Review- Big Mouth and Ugly Girl.......2006-12-20

The book Big mouth and ugly girl" is written by Joyce Carol Oates. It is about a boy (Big Mouth) and a girl (Ugly girl), who go to Rocky River High School. One day, there was a bombthreat and Matt was suddenly involved, only Ursula helps him...

The story beginns with a big mistake. Matt is accused to make a bomb threat in the school cafeteria, but it was only a joke from him. Matt is a big mouth and he has many friends, but then the ting with the bomb thrat happen and he is involved by the others. He is suspended from school and his parents aren't proud of him anymore.
In the time, when he stays at home, he writes e-mails with Ursula. She has a spitted personality, on the one hand she is ugly girl and on the other hand she is Ursula. She has not many friends, but she stands behind Matt.
Matt is very angry about all the people, who believes the rumors , that he would blow up the school. So he sue the school. Therefore he become many problems, actually his dog was kipnepped.
At the end Ursula finds out, who really made the bomb threat. She also rescues Matt, who wnts to comitt suicide. They become very good friends and they are also not involved anymore, because all know currently the truth.
Big mouth and ugly girl have a big developement in their charakter...

I think, that it is a mean book. On the one side, it is interesting to read what happened to the main chrakters, who are very special. On the other side it's often boring, because it happens nothing exciting..
But I think it's a good book for teenagers. Also for reading in school. Sometimes there are many new vocabularys, but you can understand it.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books of all time...........2006-07-23

This book is a cherished gift from a friend back in 1973. The ink drawings are very clever and enjoyed by kids of all ages--even the adult kind. Our daughters were all raised with this book and they loved it. I expect that the Slithergadee may have something to do with the eldest becoming an attorney!

5 out of 5 stars Great Childhood Memory.......2006-03-08

This book was one of my favorites when I was a child. I can still recite many of poems from memory 30 years later. I can't wait to read it to my children.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Big Ugly Man Came Up and Tied His Horse To Me.......2002-07-04

My wife bought our family copy when it first came out in 1973. She was at a conference in Boston and saw it go on display. Our daughter, born 1971, was raised on it and both my wife and I can quote passages at the drop of a word. Favorites are "The Slithergadee" and "The common cormorant or shag...." Our daughter is now expecting her first child (our first grandchild) and we presented her with our copy. We have recently purchased a paperback copy to read when the child is at our home. Our daughter's sister-in-law read our original copy and is now looking for a copy to read to her son. It is great for teaching children reading and an understanding of art and life. (Yes, I have several Wallace Tripp illustrations.)

5 out of 5 stars Witty, Intelligent, and Wonderful.......2002-02-19

I came across this book when I was in graduate school--living with two commercial artists and studying for my master's in library science. We were in a book store one evening when the woman I lived with started pointing out the cleverness of the illustrations and how well they matched the poetic selections. After all these years I remember my favorite--a little racoon standing in the snow very soberly reciting "I do not like thee Doctor Fell, The reason why I cannot tell..." He is speaking to an old country doctor who is walking through the snow wearing a coonskin hat, carrying his bag, looking soooo tired--and here is this animal lecturing him--the scene is both serious and silly---and they are all like that--there is a depth, an intelligence, that brings the reader back again and again. I read my copy over and over. It was in the children's section, but the humor in the illustrations is definitely aimed at adult appreciation.

5 out of 5 stars Creme de la Creme.......2000-05-16

There is no way for me to convey the top notch quality of Mr. Tripp's humor and art work in the sketched scenes that decorate both front and back covers and also accompany each verse in this volume. While each of the nonsense verses are wonderful in their own right, the accompanying drawings (with the comments created by Mr. Tripp for the little animal characters he has sketched for each scene) are absolutely delightful!

I received this book as a gift from my husband many years ago and I have worn it to a frazzle enjoying it over and over; it is my healthy tension-reducer and stress manager. Although it is presented as a child's book, I am convinced it was sketched for grownups. I am at a loss for words to tell what an indescribably delicious treat you will find in this book no matter what your age!

Situated in a remote outpost in West Virginia at the turn of the last century, the story that Lenore McComas Coberly tells in Sarah’s Girls is one of place, people, and unquenchable spirit. In this fictionalized account of her recent ancestors, Coberly masterfully traces the journeys of their lives, their dreams, and their hardships over the course of the twentieth century. At its center is the story of Lena, who returns to care for her dead sister’s daughters, giving up the promise of a life that can spare her the adversity rural living guarantees. The author goes back to Big Ugly Creek, the place where her grandparents met—and the place whose memory she cannot leave. Using the stories she was told in her childhood as a bridge to the past, Coberly uncovers facts about her family history from documents that have made their way from one generation to another and the truth from the inherent understanding she has of these people who are so close to her. But Sarah’s Girls is not about the author; it is about the people and a place she loves. It is fiction written to tell the deeper truth about the hold West Virginia—its mountains and its valleys—has on its people.

5 out of 5 stars Would make an enduringly popular addition.......2007-02-03

"Sarah's Girls: A Chronicle Of Big Ugly Creek" is a fictionalized story based on the author's family who lived in a remote Appalachian community at the turn of the last century. This is a compelling account of ordinary lives, dreams and hardships endured over the years and decades of the 20th century by Madge, Pearl, Ida, and Edna who were the daughters of Sarah and Philip Hager, and who are cared for after their mother's death by their Aunt Lena. More than a 'coming of age' tale, "Sarah's Girls" evokes lives lived in a yesteryear community and although a work of fiction, is one of those compelling and superbly crafted novels that reveals deeper truths about the human condition than most biographies. Also available in a hardcover edition, "Sarah's Girls" is highly recommended reading and would make an enduringly popular addition to community library American fiction collections.

          Book Description

Fresh from the scary world of international organized crime in Weld's bestselling and hilarious Mackerel by Moonlight, newly elected senator Terry Mullally, one of the most charming and fickle rogues to hit the fiction pages in recent memory, finds that his old enemies may still have murder on their minds.

          Big Ugly

In Weld's first novel we followed Mullally's rise from assistant U.S. attorney to the U.S. Senate. Now he has married and is madly in love with the gorgeous widow of a shady murdered businessman, trying to shed the mobsters and cops who know his secrets. With good reason, Mullally sees danger everywhere. Does his wife know what he has done to get where he is? Does the new head of the criminal division of the Justice Department? Will the whole world? Mullally is quickly drawn into schemes of loose money and personal vendettas.

Fast-paced, funny, and sexy, Big Ugly follows the insouciant Mullally as he pulls off another surprise ending to save his precious skin.

Terry Mullally arrives in Washington to take his seat as the junior senator from Massachusetts and right off the bat lobbyists are offering him money. He backs the wrong guy for Senate Majority Leader, winds up on the Judiciary Committee and is thrown into an ethics and corruption investigation against the attorney general.

Add in Mullally's own dubious past, backroom power plays, underhanded dealings, quirky politicos along with Mullally's own dilemmas, foibles and problems and you have a delightfully humorous read. As a plus, if you don't know how your congress works, you will by the time you finish this book. And I can guran-darn-tee you, that you'll wind up believing that the real crooks in America are the ones in Washington.

5 out of 5 stars cute, frivolous, fun.......2003-06-24

I finished most of its book in one train ride from Philadelphia to Washington. All I ask of a novel is that I be entertained, and that it not take up too much of my time (which I think is ordinarily better spent on more serious stuff). This book wins on both counts.

          3 out of 5 stars Didn't Quite Do It.......2001-07-05

I simply cannot give a rating higher than 3 stars. Former Governor Weld did a much better job with "Mackerel." Trying to impress us with his vast knowledge of the inner workings of the halls of Congress, he missed and instead jumbled the plot and confused the situation. It was in fact boring in many places and took an effort to finish. Leave us hope his third offering is considerably better. The bottom line, however, is that I shall read his third offering to help him toe the line.

5 out of 5 stars A book that gets better each time.......2000-05-21

I work in Gov. Weld's former haunt, the Mass. Legislature, and know what an entertaining fellow he is. What I was not prepared for is how good a WRITER he is. A quick wit and good humor don't always translate into an ability to plot and compose, but the Gov. sure does have it. Now that New York has him, I hope he can find even bigger arenas for Terry Mullally, a murderer, thief and first rate politician. What next? The Vice Presidency or the Cabinet?

5 out of 5 stars Move over, Sue Grafton.......2000-04-03

An excellent and entertaining read. I'm really disappointed there are not more titles to this series. It's easily as good as Sue Grafton's alphabet mystery series. I eagerly await the next installment.

B*U*F*F (Big Ugly Fat F*****) is the Strategic Air Command air crew and jungle grunt's popular nickname for the B-52. It is the story of Major Rudi Mauser, a United States Air Force bomber pilot, and the interplay of events leading to his becoming the commander of a B-52 combat crew. He discovers that he had avoided participation in the Korean Conflict by a quirk of fate, only to be thrust into an active combat role in America's controversial war in Vietnam. Rudi and his crew follow in the footsteps of their World War II predecessors, maintaining their sanity by resorting to outrageous attempts at humor. Throughout his career Rudi has confrontations with GK Harden, who had harassed Rudi as an Aviation Cadet. Rudi's frequently erotic love life also ends when he is smitten by Sabrina, a school teacher he meets on the island of Okinawa, who has a very unusual background.

B*U*F*F is written in the vernacular of the B-52 combat crewmember participants, and contains an explicit adult love story. The primary objective is a novel that allows the reader to experience the unrestrained details of Arc Light bombing operations in Southeast Asia. The intimate horrors of modern day conventional weapon bombing contained in B*U*F*F have never been published before.

4 out of 5 stars Big Mouth and Ugly Girl Review.......2007-03-09

Big Mouth and Ugly Girl by Joyce Carol Oates is about Matt Donaghy and Ursula Riggs. When Matt is accused of a bomb scare at Rocky River High School, Ursula is curious about who would accuse him. When she remembers the day when Matt was sarcastically saying that he would blow up the school, she was determined to make things right again. She becomes a witness and helps clear up this whole drama, but not for long...

Matt and Ursula become good friends a long the way, facing the harassment and the teasing. But will they be able to handle what will be coming their way? This teenage drama, with a couple of laughs, keeps you reading until you finished the whole book!

5 out of 5 stars Such descriptive words!.......2007-10-08

So many things make this a fantastic book. The author's choice of words --risky, bloodthirsty, shaking with fear, hesitantly -- is perfect for my children's expanding vocabulary. Also wonderful is her reference to "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" as a source of inspiration for Joe. Joe and the monster both love reading. Joe uses exclamation points in his letters because he wants his words to be shouted. The pictures are expressive and colorful too.
My two year old son loves this book. He hated to return it to the library! We finally bought him his own copy.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to help with nighttime terrors.......2005-12-31

Both of my daughters and I loved this book. What a wonderful, original way of dealing with the problem of monsters under the bed. As a parent, I too tried giving my children "monster spray" to get rid of monsters but just like the boy in this book, my children felt that since I first said there was no such thing as monster and then gave them spray to get rid of the monsters - how could they be sure the spray would actually work.

The idea of the letters was excellent and I loved when the monster accuses the little boy of being mean because he ate monster cookies - well every letter was just hilarous and the end was great too.

            I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A timeless tale about the importance of not being ruled by one's fears.......2005-11-04

Illustrated by Carl DiRocco, Dear Big, Mean, Ugly Monster is a lighthearted story by Ruth Marie Berglin especially for young readers who feel nervous about what might be lurking under their bed. An ordinary young boy is terribly frightened of the monster under his bed; he hears its claws and fangs scraping long into the night. Even the Monster Spray his mother made or his new flashlight can't drive it away. But when he decides he's tired of being afraid, he writes a letter to the monster telling it exactly how he feels. Then amazingly, he gets a reply - from SAM, the Sorta Average Monster living under his bed! A timeless tale about the importance of not being ruled by one's fears, with the moral that friendships can turn up in the most unlikely places.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Book on Subject of Confronting Fear.......2005-10-17

First off, I should mention that I was contacted many months ago by the publisher to endorse this book. Having said that, I never endorse anything that I don't honestly feel is worth it. But this is a very charming and smart book that tackles a specific concept without talking down to children or using text that will make their parents gag. Before making books of my own, I worked for 7 years for a children's bookstore, so I've seen the good, the bad and everything inbetween. This book sits high on the list.

Since Amazon doesn't have a proper description of the book, I'll provide my own. Joe is hesitant to go to bed every night, because he is convinced that there is a monster under his bed. He's developed an entire ritual for bedtime based on his going to bed safely. One day, however, empowered by a message he's learned from "The Billy Goats Gruff," he's decided to confront the situation head on and begins writing letters to the monster. To his surprise, he's finding letters written back to him FROM the monster upon waking. It is this daily correspondence between the two that I think makes this book a unique way to tell a story with both realism and humor.

Child and Family Press used a small portion of my endorsement (which, by the way, is unpaid) on the inside front flap of the book. Here it is in it's entirety. Buy this book. It's a very nice Halloween treat as well.

"Reminiscent of Emberly's "Go Away, Big Green Monster," Parish and Simonts "No More Monsters for Me!' and - dare I say it - Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are," Berglin and Dirocco's "Dear Big, Mean, Ugly Monster" offers us a tale of bravery in the dark that has a charm, innocence, and humor that remains uniquely their own. Good stuff!"
