The reports in these proceedings cover several aspects related to the creation, manipulation and transport of intense charged particle beams. The Group on Single Particle Nonlinear Dynamics discussed issues relevant to particle accelerators and to the problems of storing charged particles in a circular accelerator for a very long time. The Group on Creation and Manipulation of High Phase Density Beams discussed topics relevant to the production, transport and monitoring of high brightness beams, including radiation emitted from free-electron lasers. The Group on Physics of, and Physics with, High Energy Density Beams covered some aspects of the physics that can be studied with photon and particle beams and on the physics of particle beams. This group attracted contributions from different concepts and utilizations of intense beams.

It has been written for a large audience which includes users of accelerator facilities, accelerator physicists and engineers, and undergraduates aiming to learn the basic principles of construction, operation and applications of accelerators.

This volume continues the discussion of particle accelerator physics beyond the introduction in Vol I. It is specially aimed at the graduate student and scientist planning to work or working in the field of accelerator physics. Basic principles of beam dynamics already discussed in Vol. I, are expanded into the nonlinear regime in order to tackle fundamental problems encountered in present day accelerator design and development. Nonlinear dynamics is discussed both for the transverse phase space to determine chromatic and geometric aberrations which limit the dynamic aperture as well as for the longitude phase space in connection with phase focusing at very small values of the momentum compaction. Whenever possible, effects derived theoretically are compared with observations made at existing accelerators.

If I were to base my impression of the West on this book I would walk away thinking that it lacked wit and possessed very little wisdom. If you're looking for "funny" cowboy sayings that you might not break out in mixed company, or something cowboy themed to put on the back of your toilet, then this is the book for you. If you're actually interested in authentic, profound or meaningful cowboy philosophy...keep looking.

Cowboy Wisdom is an absolutely marvelous addition to any library, whether you are a lover of the "cowboy way" or the slendid beauty of America's heartland! The photos are spectacular and the "cowboy wisdom" is as relevant today as it was when the West was young.

There's lore galore in this attractive and entertaining collection of humor, nostalgia, trivia, and practical advice.

You'll find recipes, trail hints, poetry, songs, observations, and recollections. Lots of wisdom in a handy 5.5- by 6.75-inch format, which--as a blurb on the back cover notes--is "small enough to fit in a standard-sized saddlebag."

It features quotes by and anecdotes about cowboys (and cowgirls) from the movies, the old Wild West, and the contemporary range--where cowpunchers still ride horses, but tote their bedrolls in the back of a pickup.

A macho statement from lady outlaw Belle Starr: "A pair of six-shooters beats a pair of sixes." (1877)

A practical note from co-author Terry Hall: "Here's all you need to know about cows: They're not smart, they're bigger than you are, and some of them have absolutely no respect for human beings." (1993)

It's an attractive book and fun to read. A great book to give to a friend. But buy at least two--you'll want one for your own library

I felt the same way about the book as others did - it's a disappointment. 198 pages of one liners and cartoons. That said, it's my own fault, I didn't read the description and was expecting something about Friedman. So in a nutshell, if you're looking for something to read while going to the bathroom, this is fine.

A Texan relative once introduced an old friend of his to me. They passed what sounded to be reminiscences of theirs with enduring crinkly-eyed smiles and grins. After closing-off the seemingly off-handed encounter, my relative pointed out the covert subtlties of the preceding event as we walked away. The old-timer had begun with seemingly self-deprecating remarks -- wrapping these around hidden and ironic, good-natured teasing and delayed-action barbs: the lovable Texas Two-step. Old-timers will give you the "high sign" -- that little wiggle of the pointer finger as you pass each other's pick-up trucks on a country road. They acknowledge that you may be a fool and/or a king, but we may need to help each other down the road. Life is you and it is I and the daylight between you and I. This book is a Texas high sign.

It was OK.......2006-08-16

I bought the book because I saw his interview on "60 minutes" and the man was hilarious. This book is very easy to read, has some interesting 1-liner and cartoons but it is OK, nothing too exciting. Most of the funny 1-liner was repeated in the "60 minutes" interview, so...watch the interview instead of spending the money to buy the book. Oh well...

This book is not only entertaining reading, it now occupies a place in my office bookshelf! In this book are great quotes, sayings, colloquialisms, and other "pearls of wisdom" that apply themselves wonderfully to your speeches and presentations too! I and my husband have read and enjoyed this book, and are always throwing quotes at each other from it (like, "...when you find yourself in a hole...STOP DIGGING!"). Not only is this a book you will want to treat yourself to, you will want to get a few to give as gifts, too!
