    Book Description

The recent emergence and proliferation of proximal probes, e.g. SPM and AFM, and computational techniques for simulating tip-surface interactions has enabled the systematic investigation of interfacial problems on ever smaller scales, as well as created means for modifying and manipulating nanostructures. In short, they have led to the appearance of the new, interdisciplinary fields of micro/nanotribology and micro/nanomechanics.

This volume serves as a timely, practical introduction to the principles of nanotribology and nanomechanics and applications to magnetic storage systems and MEMS/NEMS. Assuming some familiarity with macrotribilogy/mechanics, the book comprises chapters by internationally recognized experts, who integrate knowledge of the field from the mechanics and materials-science perspectives. They cover key measurement techniques, their applications, and theoretical modelling of interfaces, each beginning their contributions with macro- and progressing to microconcepts. After reviewing the fundamental experimental and theoretical aspects in the first part, Nanotribology and Nanomechanics then treats applications.

Three groups of readers are likely to find this text valuable: graduate students, research workers, and practicing engineers. It can serve as he basis for a comprehensive, one- or two-semester course in scanning probe microscopy; applied scanning probe techniques; or nanotribology/nanomechanics/nanotechnology, in departments such as mechanical engineering, materials science, and applied physics.

      Book Description

The topic of professionalism has dominated the content of major academic medicine publications (e.g. Journal of the American Medical Association, New England Journal of Medicine, Academic Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, The Lancet) during the past decade and continues to do so. The message of this current wave of professionalism is that medical educators need to be more attentive to the moral sensibilities of trainees, to their interpersonal and affective dimensions, and to their social conscience, all to the end of skilled, humanistic physicians. Urgent calls to address professionalism from such groups as the Association of American Medical Colleges (representing the nation's 126 accredited medical schools and nearly 400 major teaching hospitals), the American Board of Internal Medicine, and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, among others. In fact, at the 2004 annual meeting of the AAMC six separate presentations addressed professionalism with such titles as "Evaluating Humanism and Professionalism," Professionalism: Expectation, Education, Evaluation," or "Toward Assessing Professional Behaviors of Medical Students through Peer Observations" (note the preoccupation with assessment).

Professionalism, then, has become part of the current academic medicine parlance, used by administrators, clinical faculty, residency programs, and professional organizations with an expectation of shared meanings and goals. All of these stakeholders focus on what has become a consistent list of attributes deemed to be the essence of professionalism, which usually include variations on altruism, duty, excellence, honor and integrity, accountability, and respect. In fact, most of the scholarly work to date has been listing (attributes of professionalism), describing (activities that may foster it), decrying (the environment that works against it), and measuring/evaluating it.

In this collection of essays, we don’t argue with these attributes. Instead, we ask questions of the discourse from which they arise, how the specialized language of academic medicine disciplines has defined, organized, contained, and made seemingly immutable a group of attitudes, values, and behaviors subsumed under the label "professional" or "professionalism." This collection aims to be a critical text, one that questions the profession’s beliefs about the nature of its work and how such beliefs are enacted (or not) in medical education, particularly as they fuel the professionalism discourse. In addition, we will scrutinize how the discourse is enacted in both the formal and hidden curriculum, and in the larger medical environment.

        Book Description

The second edition of Materials Degradation and Its Control by Surface Engineering continues the theme of the first edition, where discussions on corrosion, wear, fatigue and thermal damage are balanced by similarly detailed discussions on their control methods, e.g. painting and metallic coatings. The book is written for the non-specialist, with an emphasis on introducing technical concepts graphically rather than through algebraic equations. In the second edition, the graphic content is enhanced by an additional series of colour and monochrome photographs that illustrate key aspects of the controlling physical phenomena. Existing topics such as liquid metal corrosion have been extended and new topics such as corrosion inhibitors added.

5 out of 5 stars Great text for learning and reference.......2003-08-18

As a student in materials science, this is one of best books I have ever read in materials science. The text is kept to a minimum and is easy to read. The figures are large and easy to understand, and the equations are all well explained. Just about every topic in friction and wear is given at least a cursory glance along with listings of more focused literature. This book should be read by all who deal with friction and wear as part of their work or education.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the price!.......2002-01-14

This book is very inspirational. For anyone who really appreciates innovative crochet techniques this book's definately a keeper. First of all it's huge with tons of high glossy photos. I loved seeing all of the different clothes. I've always thought of myself as an innovative crocheter but the artists in the book really let their imaginations go.

There is not only crochet clothing but woven, leather and found objects. If you hunger for abstract designs and techniques this book will satisfy.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible Of The Wearable Art Movement!.......2000-05-28

I have the edition of this book which came out in the mid'80s and which was embraced by all of us doing wearable art as the ultimate art we are all aspiring to achieve. The author then had the most famous wearable art gallery too in New York City. The pictures are out-of-this world in the earlier edition and I can't believe they'd be anything but splendid in this later edition. I can't even count how many hours I've spent going over the pictures again and again in the book. I can't understand why Amazon doesn't have a front cover to show you on this book though. Mine has a knock-you-out front cover with an absolutely gorgeous cover model in wearable art. If you've always wanted to understand what wearable art is, this book answered all the questions I had about the movement and the pioneers who started it. I spent (more money) on my book back then so this one is a real deal if you get the same number of pictures.

            5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......1999-10-07

I am so impressed with this book, that I would reccomend it to anyone who has ever had any interest in "art to wear" Truly remarkable and one of a kind.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent presentation of Art to Wear through Julie:.......1999-08-27

Julie captures the essence of the beautifully photographed Art to Wear pieces; here the pieces are photographed clearly so you can see in the art pieces the materials and designs. Captured is the feeling looking at the model what it is like to wear the cloak, mask, sweater, and many more kinds of Art to Wear pieces. The text by each artist accompanying their work is very inspiring expressing their growth and creativity. Not a How to Book; this book shows how it has been done and is a celebration of creativity.

                  Book Description

This hilarious satire of corporate life goes inside the head of marketing executive T. John Dick, whose uniquely incompetent and exasperating management style leads him into a series of embarrassing and occasionally fatal mishaps at SuperPumps, Inc. Why do his colleagues continually flout his painstakingly drafted Meeting Room Reservation Procedure? Should he have had that plate of shrimp before an important presentation? And, most important, why does his arch-rival seem to be winning the race for the company's top job, despite T.J.'s obviously superior qualifications? Through it all, T.J. never loses sight of his own unique abilities, invisible to all but himself. Laugh-out-loud funny, the story follows T.J. as he finds increasingly elaborate and ridiculous ways to make a fool of himself, believing all the while he is painting a heroic self-portrait. The climax is reached in a bizarre round of golf with the company president that culminates in a fire in the hero's pants.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious - Should be in Every Airport Bookstore.......2005-09-06

If you've ever worked for a company run by idiots, this book is for you. Not only is this novel well written and a page-turner, it will leave your sides hurting from laughing so hard.

In 1969, we had The Peter Principle which, as you recall, states: "In a Hierarchy Every Employee Tends to Rise to His Level of Incompetence." In 2003, Augustus Gump took The Peter Principle, threw in some Dilbert, added a large dose of corporate and government bureaucracy, and turned the whole thing into The Management Secrets of T. John Dick.

This book is a modern classic, a truly excellent first novel by a man who obviously knows the reality of corporate life.

                  5 out of 5 stars Don't hesitate - it is very funny!.......2002-04-25

There are some parts of this book which are laugh-out-loud funny. The rest of it will have you rolling. It is definitely recommended for those with a sardonic sense of humour. I, for one, can recognize some of my fellow co-workers (past and present) in the character of T. John Dick. Worst of all, I think we share some traits.
I gave it as a gift to some of my colleagues and they all loved it.
                  Don't hesitate - you won't regret it.

                  5 out of 5 stars A very humorous book..........2002-03-10

This book properly skewers the daily functions of a typical
corporate executive...several laughs in every page. Told through the inner thoughts of an overpaid, self-important Marketing Manager, it should be required reading for every executive in Corporate America.
If you like Mark Twain and Monty Python, you'll like this book! Truly deserving of much wider recognition!

5 out of 5 stars Dilbert in prose.......2002-01-15

This book is the prose equivalent of the cartoon strip Dilbert. All the characters are there - the clueless boss, the lazy and dishonest employee and the hardworking employee who never seems to get any support. We're only missing Dogbert. Anyone who has ever worked in Manufacturing will find many of the situations truly hilarious.

This was a very funny and witty book. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the situations when I read them, and laughing even harder hours later when I had a chance to digest them. I look forward to the next book from this author.

                  5 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable read.......2001-11-29

"The Management Secrets of T. John Dick" is a thoroughly enjoyable book. I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions, as well as wincing in recognition at the kind of incompetence only too familiar to anyone who has ever worked in any kind of company environment. What really makes you chuckle is the character of T. J. himself. No matter what mayhem he causes, it's never his fault - sound like anyone you know?
The book gets more and more enjoyable, the further you get into it, as T. J. somehow finds increasingly elaborate and and ridiculous ways to make a complete chump of himself, culminating in a truly hilarious round of golf with the Company President, during which a bizarre chain of events lead to a fire in our hero's pants.
Although they are always seen through the filter of T. J.'s unique view of the universe of which he forms the center, other characters too are interesting and fun, especially Ronnie, T. J.'s laconic nemesis, Hans, the ebullient German acting President of the company, and Grace, T.J.'s less than devoted wife, who puts up a spirited and entirely successful resistance to all his attempts to apply his management techniques to his marriage.
The novel is very cleverly and stylishly written. The author does a wonderful job of lettting T.J. expose his own absurdity, while believing he is painting a heroic self-portrait. In summary - a very funny book and a great read.
