Molecular Gas Dynamics: Theory, Techniques, and Applications (Modeling and Simulation in Science, Engineering and Technology)
Yoshio Sone Manufacturer: Birkhäuser Boston ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Accessories:
ASIN: 0817643451 |
Book Description
This self-contained work is an up-to-date treatment of the basic theory of molecular gas dynamics and its various applications. Recent progress in the field has greatly enhanced the original theory and stimulated interesting and critical gas dynamic phenomena and problems. This book, unique in the literature, presents working knowledge, theory, techniques, and typical phenomena in rarefied gases for theoretical development and applications.
Basic theory is developed in a systematic way and presented in a form easily applied to practical use. After presenting basic theory and various simple flows, such as unidirectional or quasi-unidirectional flows and flows around a sphere, the author discusses additional topics, including flows induced by temperature fields, which are typical in rarefied gases; flows with evaporation and condensation; and bifurcation of flows in rarefied gases. The appendix contains many useful fundamental formulae, as well as an explanation of the theoretical background for the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method, easily accessible to nonmathematicians and not found elsewhere in the literature.
Existence of the ghost effect has made molecular gas dynamics indispensable to the study of a gas in the continuum limit, traditionally treated by classical fluid dynamics. In this book, the ghost and non-Navier–Stokes effects are demonstrated for typical examples—such as Bénard and Taylor–Couette problems—in the context of a new framework. An infinitesimal curvature effect is also discussed, with a long-standing problem of the bifurcation of the plane Couette flow worked out as an example.
Molecular Gas Dynamics is useful for those working in different communities where kinetic theory or fluid dynamics is important: graduate students, researchers, and practitioners in theoretical physics, applied mathematics, and various branches of engineering. The work may be used as a self-study reference or as a textbook in graduate-level courses on fluid dynamics, gas dynamics, kinetic theory, molecular or rarefied gas dynamics, microflows, and applied mathematics.

Slow Rarefied Flows: Theory and Application to Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (Progress in Mathematical Physics)
Carlo Cercignani Manufacturer: Birkhäuser Basel ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3764375345 |
Book Description
The book presents the mathematical tools used to deal with problems related to slow rarefied flows, with particular attention to basic concepts and problems which arise in the study of micro- and nanomachines. The mathematical theory of slow flows is presented in a practically complete fashion and provides a rigorous justification for the use of the linearized Boltzmann equation, which avoids costly simulations based on Monte Carlo methods. The book surveys the theorems on validity and existence, with particular concern for flows close to equilibria, and discusses recent applications of rarefied lubrication theory to micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). It gives a general acquaintance of modern developments of rarefied gas dynamics in various regimes with particular attention to low speed microscale gas dynamics.
Senior students and graduates in applied mathematics, aerospace engineering, and mechanical mathematical physics will be provided with a basis for the study of molecular gas dynamics. The book will also be useful for scientific and technical researchers engaged in the research on gas flow in MEMS.

I.N. Ivchenko , S.K. Loyalka , and Jr., R.V. Tompson Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402058640 |
Book Description
The Kinetic Theory of Gases has applications in many areas of science and technology as well as in our understandings of many natural processes and phenomena from the nano-scale up to the cosmic-scale. Some of the fields and topics affected include manufacturing, health care, weather, defence, pollution, aerospace science and engineering, and others. In particular, the interactions of rarefied gases with surfaces are of great interest because such interactions can have pronounced effects on the behaviour exhibited by those systems in all of the above fields. Such fundamental things as the transfer of mass, momentum, and energy between the components of a system can be significantly altered by such interactions. Collectively this transfer is typically described in terms of Rarefied Gas Dynamics and Transport Theory which generally go hand-in-hand with the Kinetic Theory of Gases. When this transport involves small particles suspended in a gas such as air, it is typically termed Aerosol Mechanics. Thus, this book should prove to be a very useful tool in virtually all application areas involving the Kinetic Theory of Gases, Rarefied Gas Dynamics, Transport Theory, and Aerosol Mechanics. This book is designed to serve a dual function. It is intended that it be capable of serving as a teaching instrument, either in a classroom environment or independently, for the study of basic analytical methods and mathematical techniques that may be used in the Kinetic Theory of Gases and is primarily suitable for use in graduate level physics and engineering courses on the subject. This book should also prove to be useful as a reference for scientists and engineers working in the fields of Rarefied Gas Dynamics and Aerosol Mechanics. In addition, the material in this book may prove to be of interest to individuals working in such areas as Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or any other applied discipline in which gas-surface interactions can be expected to play a significant role.

The Boltzmann Equation and Its Applications (Applied Mathematical Sciences)
Carlo Cercignani Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0387966374 |
Book Description
This book gives a complete exposition of the present status of the theory of the Boltzmann equation and its applications. The Boltzmann equation, an integrodifferential equation established by Boltzmann in 1872 to describe the state of a dilute gas, still forms the basis for the kinetic theory of gases. It has proved fruitful not only for the study of the classical gases Boltzmann had in mind, but also, properly generalized, for electron transport in nuclear reactors, photon transport in superfluids, and radiative transport in planetary and stellar atmospheres. The text presents a unified approach to the problems arising in these different fields, by exploiting similarities whenever they exist and underlining the differences when necessary. But the main exposition is tied to the classical equation established by Boltzmann. Hence the detailed description of applications refers almost exclusively to monatomic neutral gases. Appropiate references are given to papers dealing with similar problems arising in other fields, with particular concern for neutron transport. A unique feature is the detailed consideration of the boundary conditions to be used in connection with the Boltzmann equation. Other topics covered in detail are the derivation of the Boltzmann equation from first principles, the theory of the linearized Boltzmann equation, the use of model equations, and the various regimes of rarefied gas dynamics. In addition to updating the material to 1987, the main improvement over the previous book of the author, "Theory and Application of the Boltzmann equation" is the detailed survey of the use of the techniques of functional analysis in connection with the nonlinear Boltzmann equation, a subject which has greatly progressed in the last ten years.

Gas Transport in Porous Media (Theory and Applications of Transport in Porous Media)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 1402039611 |
Book Description
This book presents a compilation of state-of-the art studies on gas and vapor transport processes in porous and fractured media. A broad set of models and processes is presented, including advection/diffusion, the Dusty Gas Model, enhanced vapor diffusion, phase change, coupled processes, solid/vapor sorption, and vapor-pressure lowering. Numerous applications are also presented that illustrate these processes and models in current problems facing the scientific community.
This book fills a gap in the general area of transport in porous and fractured media—an area that has historically been dominated by studies of liquid-phase flow and transport. This book identifies gas and vapor transport processes that may be important or dominant in various applications, and it exploits recent advances in computational modeling and experimental methods to present studies that distinguish the relative importance of various mechanisms of transport in complex media.

Methods of direct solving the Boltzmann equation and study of nonequilibrium flows (Fluid Mechanics and Its Applications)
V.V. Aristov Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792368312 |
Book Description
The outstanding points of our book consist of investigations into the possibility of the numerical schemes of the direct method for solving the Boltzmann equation. Both deterministic and Monte Carlo procedures are considered to evaluate the collision integrals. The main mathematical tool is the conservative splitting method on the basis of which, a set of classical and new problems are solved to study nonequilibrium gas flows. This monograph differs from other books in the same field, because, for example the book by G.A. Bird is concerned with the approach of simulation of rarefied gas flows and the book by C. Cercignani deals with the classical kinetic theory issues and describes mainly the analytical and engineering methods for solving the Boltzmann equation. Our book is the first (as we know) monograph which is devoted to the numerical direct solving of the Boltzmann equation. The intended level of readership are graduate and postgraduate students and researches. This book can be used by the target groups as the mathematical apparatus to numerical study of complex problems of nonequilibrium gas flows.

Folksy and Fabulous.......2004-08-16
a delightful little read.......2003-10-30
The style of the translation is conducive to smooth reading and avoid copious footnotes that often lead to reader frustration. The division of chapters with informative titles also makes the text enjoyable to read. The story is translated to paragraph form, a refreshing contrast with line by line translation in other versions which seems boring and droll. An translation of a separate tale, the madness of Tristan is also included to make the tale complete. It seems no effort is spared to make the text readable. The difficulty of this text is less than that of a Harry Potter novel.
I would recommend this book to all readers looking for a simple and enjoyable tale of medieval romance. Thanks must be given to god and Penguin publishing for opening up this legendary medieval tale to a wider audience.

Following from his comic-fantasy anthologies The Wizards of Odd and The Flying Sorcerers, Peter Haining presents a third collection of oddities, now with a somewhat wider scope. Besides funny fantasy and SF, these 24 stories include absurdism, allegory, historical tomfoolery, and even offbeat crime fiction. They range from inevitable names like Terry Pratchett--here with an SF riff on the old mystery of why or how the chicken crossed the road--to unlikely ones like L. Frank Baum of Oz fame, who contributes a wholly uncomic murder story.Jerome K. Jerome spoofs SF's utopian socialist futures, Robert Bloch introduces a Tuxedo of Invisibility into the lowlife world of Damon Runyon, Ray Bradbury is exuberantly funny about low-budget SF/horror movies, Peter Beagle explores the embarrassments of being a lady werewolf's boyfriend, Mark Twain deliberately paints his daft medieval-romance plot into a corner, John Kendrick Bangs invents a new and silly Munchausen adventure, and Gene Wolfe actually lives up to his splendid title "How I Lost the Second World War and Helped Turn Back the German Invasion." It's a wildly eclectic mix, whose famous names also include Woody Allen, G.K. Chesterton, Philip K. Dick, Mervyn Peake, Spike Milligan, A.A. Milne, Peter Sellers, and James Thurber.
Everyone has different views on what's funny and what isn't, and some of Haining's choices seem eccentric--but most readers should find enough chuckles in this plump anthology to make it well worth the price of admission. --David Langford, Amazon.co.uk
