Book Description
It was 1995, and Mike Lingenfelter was ready for his life to be over. Two serious heart attacks and open-heart surgery had taken away most of the good things that he had in his life. However, his doctors still held out hope for him, and they were still trying to find ways to motivate him to get out of the house and exercise. Their vision was that an energetic dog on a leash might do that for Mike. And so it was that this golden retriever named Dakota, who had been rescued from death himself, came to help Mike with his rehabilitative therapy.
Eventually, Dakota became Mike's protector and his best friend, saving Mike's life several times after somehow learning how to alert Mike of an oncoming heart crises. Dakota gave Mike back his dignity, his pride, and his life. Early on, it became evident to Mike that this wonderful 98-pound, red-haired, four-legged angel had a special gift: Dakota was a spirit guide, and it was Mike's duty to share him and the power of the human-animal bond. Ultimately, as part of that journey, one more miracle was needed, as Dakota fought a courageous and dignified battle for his own life.

More than a story about a man and his dog........2007-02-25
The author rescues a beautiful golden retriever on advice from his doctor to get a dog. The dog however has the ability to alert the author to impending cardiac episodes and in doing so, gives the author the freedom to work and go about his daily life. This book touches the readers soul and lets us know that maybe there is more to the human-animal bond than we know. The book also dicusses the "Americans with Disabilities Act" as it relates to service dogs. Anybody who has loved a dog will love this book.
Highly Recommended.......2007-01-28
I could not put this book down. Mike and Dakota's story as a team was inspiring and transcended this world. Their devotion to each other was amazing. You do not have to be an animal lover to learn from this book. My hope would be that after you read this book you will see how special animals are in our lives.
Excellent and so touching!.......2006-12-19
I recently lost my Golden Angel too, and while I was looking for a book to help
Me cope with my pain, I found this book. I am a very busy person and don't
Have much time to read, but this book took me 2 days. It is full of feelings and even humor. No matter what the situation is, our Golden's will manage to put a smile on our face. When you start reading this book, make sure you have a box of Kleenex
Near by. This book goes into my favorite book list, and I purchased a few more as
Christmas presents.
Highly Recommended.......2006-11-25
I Absolutely LOVED this book! MY sister in law bought for my husband --animal lover..so much so he works k-9 for the military...Anyway she bought it for him but I read it first because the cover called my attention. I like dogs but was reluctant to get one because I though of all the work there is involved with taking care of animals..besides with a little one, school, and work a dog would be more work for me....But after reading this book, I know I want a dog..The magic between Mike and Dakota is so overwhelming --that it made me think that that is what we need in our lives..Yea it will be work to potty train and take care of ..but then again things in life that are worth anything sometimes require alot of work--..God Bless you Mike and Dakota and thanks!!!!
One of the most touching stories of the bond between man and his dog........2006-03-14
I enjoyed the book so much. Felt like I was right there with them and every time the author had an attack could visualize how much his Angel/dog helped him through it. They had a bond that is so hard to explain unless you have had an animal and then know what it means, they are not dogs, they are your family and in this case especially he was not only family but his life support and friend. I definitely would recommend this book to anyone, have since bought additional copies to give to my animal lover friends for gifts.
Book Description
"Death is nothing to fear - and life without fear can be lived to the fullest."
This is Kimberly Clark Sharp's message from her extraordinary experience during the time after her heart suddenly stopped beating and she lay on the sidewalk, not breathing, and without a pulse. Swept into a peaceful loving place of brilliant golden light and warm comfort, she saw, for the first time, the meaning of life - and death.
Thereafter, Kimberly, with hamster Toto at her side, left Kansas for Seattle - known as "the Emerald City" -- to fulfill a destiny devoted to the service of others as foreseen at the end of her near-death experience. Guided by a new sensitivity to the presence of angels, demons and other invisibilities, Kimberly attained a Masters degree in Social Work at the University of Washington and began a career in medical social work that put her in direct contact with dying people - and people who almost died and came back.
It is the inspirational stories of these near-death experiences, as well as Kimberly's own life challenges in love, family life and the diagnosis of breast cancer, that form the core of this surprisingly funny page-turner of a book.
Customer Reviews:
A Very Readable Account of some primary-source NDE's.......2007-02-09
The author experienced a brief NDE at age 22. She doesn't go into a lot of detail about this experience, since she "repressed" the experience at the time, most of the book is her account of her life afterward and how it was affected/changed. Through her work as a social worker at a hospital, she encountered a number of other people who had NDE's, and she realized that her experience had turned on her psychic sensitivity in such a way that she could empathize with these patients, as well as see angels and demons. Her accumulating experiences with people who had these experiences led her into being more overtly involved with the subject, and recalling and exploring the nuances of her own experience. Through this process, she has become involved in giving talks about how the medical community should respond to patients' NDE's, and being involved with NDE-related groups. The NDE and the lack of fear of death it engendered in her helps her as she goes through traumatic events in her life such as the death of friends, and personal health problems.
If you have read a number of books on this topic (such as by Raymond Moody, etc.) this book will be interesting due to the fact that Kim Clark actually reports the first-person version of a number of "famous" NDE cases which are quoted by Moody and others in their books, such as the story about the NDE experiencer who "proved" her experience by observing an abandoned tennis shoe on the outside ledge of the hospital, which the author later found and determined could not have been seen by anyone except someone "floating" above the hospital as reported. There are several other oft-told NDE stories in other literature which Kim Clark reports on in first person here - it is interesting to have a primary source for these stories.
The book is very well-written and one turns the pages quickly.
A little odd..........2007-01-30
Although I enjoy the subject of near-death experiences, this story got a little out of what you might call the grip of reality. Sharp talks about battling demons (literally!), beams of light emanating from her chest, and having psychic visions. I'm sorry but I think the author is a little bit "off", to put it tactfully.
After the Light.......2007-01-10
Very positive and forward thinking book. I couldn't put it down. I would highly recommend for anyone interested in the subject of near-death-experiences and how it can change your life.
Ann's Opinion.......2006-11-23
This book is very interesting and worth reading, but I wonder why Kimberly Sharp has so much trouble with demons if she is a professing Christian. The name of Jesus and His power chases away demons. Read the book and see what you think.
An NDE and Paranormal Experiences.......2006-09-26
Kimberly Clark Sharp writes a personal memoir about her near death experience at the age of 22 and all the things that take place afterwards. Paranormal and spirtual happenings follow her life.
She ends up working as a social worker and dealing with the dying. She uses her own NDE to help her become a counselor.
I did not try to judge any of the events of her life and accepted the story as it was told in the book. One never knows what others have honestly experienced and I am not one to question her personal accounts. They are certainly interesting and different.
It is wortyh reading. It will create some questions as well.

CUPID AND DIANA: A Novel
ASIN: 0312323662
Release Date: 2004-08-12 |
Book Description
From the New York Times notable author Christina Bartolomeo, a novel that will make you root for the underdog and cheer for true love to win the day.Nicky Malone, a public relations flack, hasn't seen ex-boyfriend Tony Boltanski in five years when a contentious, high-stakes, and slightly nutty nurses' strike brings them together again. While struggling with her growing feelings for the still exasperating, pigheaded Tony, Nicky also tries to cope with her nagging widowed mother, a slick boss, and an officious assistant who has read too many articles about cutthroat career women. The Side of the Angels is a refreshing, realistic look at the demands---and rewards---of career, commitment, and unforgettable love.
Customer Reviews:
Not Just Chick Lit.......2005-11-02
It is clear that Ms. Batolomeo is a wonderful writer. Her descriptions of people and places are so vivid that you easily conjure up a mental image, so I was surprised at the lack of connection I felt to her main character. Nicky Malone is fallible and realistic but bears no traits that make her especially appealing, or unappealing for that matter. I found myself feeling apathetic about whether she got her man or not, particularly since there was nothing in the description of their relationship that made me root for them. The subplot involving nurses on strike was infinitely more interesting, despite my having generally little or no interest in labor disputes. I was much more emotionally invested in the outcome of the strike than I was in the relationship between the heroine and the "man that got away". I suspect that the author herself may have been less invested in creating a believable romantic relationship than she was in depicting the behind-the-scenes machincations of a strike, and as a result, it read as though the romance was the subplot to the strike, not the other way around. Toward the end of the novel, it appeared as though Ms. Bartolomeo realized this imbalance and compensated with a few mawkish descriptions of the depth of feeling between Nicky and the object of her affection, none of which were consistent with the way she thought about or behaved toward him throughout the first two-thirds of the novel. I think the author tried to provide a crowd-pleasing chick lit ending when it is clear from the nature and quality of her writing that her tendency is toward material of much greater depth.
entertaining contemporary romance .......2004-09-13
Five years ago public relations expert Nicky Malone and union organizer Tony Boltanski ended their torrid relationship when he failed to arrive at her relative's wedding having been tied up by an urgent union matter that could not wait for a couple of hours. Though she rebounded with the philandering Jeremy for three years, Nicky knows that she never got over Tony, the one that got away. Meanwhile, Nicky's widowed practicing Catholic mother prays that her daughter get married.
The nurses of St. Francis Hospital in Winsack, Rhode Island are on strike over working conditions and patient safety. Coventry, Inc sees the bottom line as money not care; they demand changes such as nurse-patient ratio going from 1:3 to 1:8. The hospital administration has made the nurses look like the bad guys to the public; Nicky begins a PR campaign to counteract that impression. However, she works with Tony, who believes in inside fastballs that would knock his grandmother down while Nicky thinks a soft sell is needed. Adding to the charged atmosphere is the unfinished business between two driven people who still love one another.
This entertaining contemporary romance focuses on a serious social issue yet contains amusing sarcastic asides. The story line provides a deep look at media spinning in which both sides spend time painting a negative position of their opponents (sounds familiar). That is where Nicky and Tony differ as she believes their side can sell the nurses' argument of deteriorating patient care while he believes you foster the image that management are scrooges. Though the strike resolution seems hasty, fans will enjoy this labor dispute romance.

Great book in every way.......2004-08-31
This was a fun read. I loved the innovative and intricate plot, the engaging cast of characters, and the evocative setting (an old RI mill town). I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to root for the underdog. It was especially fun to root for Nicky Malone, the novel's smart, sexy, feisty, and fearless heroine. I'm looking forward to Bartolomeo's next novel, "Snowed In," which is due out this fall.
This is a fun book -- you should check it out........2003-05-15
I really enjoyed Bartolomeo's second novel, "The Side of the Angels." Yeah, there was a fair amount of romance (for the ladies), but the strike plot was very interesting, and Bartolomeo makes a lot of funny and interesting observations. Honestly, I never understood what Nicky (the female lead) sees in Tony (her lughead love interest), but as I said, I wasn't reading the book for the romance as much as for the plot. I did like the Louise character though, maybe because I once dated a gal like that. Anyway, I never would have read this book if my girlfriend hadn't recommended it, but I'm not sorry I did. It was a fun read, and I'd highly recommend it.
Tiresome, a union rant, not a fun read.......2002-09-20
I couldn't finish this. This is a tirade, replete with axe grinding. Sophomore jinx? Or is this writer tired, too old for Cosmo, too young for Social Security? I think the latter ...
Book Description
When Steve Stern appeared on the literary scene The New York Times Book Review hailed him as a prodigiously talented writer who arrives unheralded like one of the apparitions in his own stories. In his new novel, The Angel of Forgetfulness, he interweaves three stories about characters who take flight from their ordinary lives and are plunged into extraordinary circumstances. At the center of it all is an unfinished manuscriptan adventure about a fallen angel named Mocky and his half-mortal son Nachman, who both take up residence on the Lower East Side of New York circa 1900. Their story has been written by Nathan Hart, a timid proofreader for The Jewish Daily Forward, who woos a young woman named Keni with his exotic tale. Seduced by the power of his own imagination, Nathan is drawn deliriously away from Keni into the world of his story, the Jewish underworld of arsonists, horse poisoners, and thieves. More than half a century later, Keni, on her deathbed, gives Nathan's now-tattered manuscript to her young nephew, Saul, with the injunction that Saul complete the story himself. Saul's evasion of the task prompts a journey into the crucible of the sixties, one fueled by sex, drugs, and the dust of a golem in the attic of a medieval synagogue in Prague.
Dexterously juggling the narratives of Saul, Nathan, Mocky, and Nachman until they all merge in the novel's satisfying close, Stern has created a magical tour de force of the storyteller's art, one that celebrates the turbulent romance between past and present, art and obsession.
Customer Reviews:
Original Read.......2007-02-20
I did not fall in love with the plot of this book as much as I fell in love with Stern's characters. You will enjoy spending your time with them during the read and will remember them all as if you really got to know them.
starts off strong ..........2006-08-10
...and putters a bit. For the record, I'm usually a tough reviewer of books and only review books that I either really love or abhored. This book and I, ah, our first night was magic. There was laughter, some tears, time and space became distorted, the line between reality and fiction frayed, and then a kiss... by an old decrepit relative whose relation has never quite been pinned down. Which is how this book opens.
Our love affair hit a good stride towards the middle; we were looking to the future and I felt we had really bonded. But I began becoming a bit bored with our relationship, began sneaking in other books behind the Angel's back. We carried on our romance as before but we both knew something had died. After a while, I just was waiting for the end.
When the end came, I felt good about our relationship; it was fun and definitely had its moments. I'd probably take it up again if I hit a cold spell.
Follow, follow.......2006-04-27
Memphis and Arkansas in the 60s. The Lower East Side in the 1900s. Heaven. The depths, heights, sidespins and blind alleys of magical realism. The stage. An attic in Prague. The Catskills. Where up is down. (Somewhere else you want to go maybe? Ingrate!)
I hestitate to call this the culmination of Stern's work only because that would leave him nowhere to go. His individual sentences are more poetic than most author's books. His realism is real, his magic is Magic, and his weaving of the two is seamless.
almost great novel.......2005-12-22
I read the other reviews and felt compelled to take the reviews down a notch. The novel works when it disquiets the reader and challenges your notions of appropriate and productive behavior. It works less well when delving into the world of fantasy. Still, one of the best reads of 2005, but be prepared to stick with it past page 200 when the more personal story tapers off and the fanciful story dominates.
Wonderful novel.......2005-08-16
Wonderful novel that will keep you spellbound. Excellent read and a book you'll want to share with others.
