Book Description

Now in an accessible paperback edition, this classic work is just as relevant as when it first appeared in 1974, due to the increased use of nonlinear waves. It covers the behavior of waves in two parts, with the first part addressing hyperbolic waves and the second addressing dispersive waves. The mathematical principles are presented along with examples of specific cases in communications and specific physical fields, including flood waves in rivers, waves in glaciers, traffic flow, sonic booms, blast waves, and ocean waves from storms.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-09-20

I took some graduate level courses from Dr. Whitham at CalTech in 1973 while this book was still in draft form, and he was the head of the Applied Mathematics department. He was an excellent lecturer, and this book has long been an exemplar of that style as well as the pioneer book in the treatment of non linear waves. To my knowledege it was the first textbook to treat solitons. The book is very subtle in its treatment of physics, and the adept reader will note the bearing of dispersion relations on the foundations of quantum mechanics.

4 out of 5 stars good backround.......2000-03-06

Most treatment of waves involves their role in electromagnetic spectra. The writer provides the historical account of the derivation of these algebraic (read numerical analysis) versions which implement in MathCad and Matlab well. The book's material on water waves is worth the price alone. However, only at the end, does the author venture into the world of non-linear dynamics which is so important to this area. Most of the book treats the wave phenomenology as most physicists will in the kinematical sense trying to linearize everything and avoiding the path if it can't be linearized. (In this sense most of the arguements and examples are structured in the conservation of mass and energy). This is great, however for the construction of first order linear diff. equations for implementation in Mathcad or Matlab. If one were not aware of bifurcations, limit-cycles or even total response waves from control theory, one would still be left feeling secure that water waves are standing waves. (They are not). Early research breaks them up into first part(Airy) long-standing(middle of the wave) and orgin to get around this problem. Book does not approach treatment as a diffusion problem.

5 out of 5 stars The most understandable treatment of waves I have read!.......1998-06-30

Linear and Nonlinear Waves provides an excellent treatment of the wave phenomena. This is a very complex and mathematically intesive subject, which Whitham conveys in an understandable and followable manner. He takes the approach that the reader has some knowlege of the subject, but writes at an introductory graduate level. This book will give any mathematician or engineer interested in waves an excellent introduction and bring them to a superior understanding.

            Book Description

The works included in this volume look at themes including calculus of variations, nonlinear mechanics and ergodic theory, and approximation and asymptotics. Even at the early stage in his career during which he produced the work on calculus of variations featured in this volume, Bogolubov's brilliance was evident - the results he obtained in this field were quite outstanding. The author's work on nonlinear mechanics and ergodic theory is respected by mathematicians the world over. The Krylov-Bogolubov method of averaging forms the crux of these papers and numerous examples of its applications are given. Bogolubov later returns to this topic to prove the existence of quasi-periodic solutions of certain mechanical systems whose number of degrees of freedom is more than one.

5 out of 5 stars Time Again for Fun and Adventure.......2006-06-21

"It's That Time Again" Vol. 3 proves that many people like this sort of new fiction about old favorites who appeared on radio, but are also known from the world of books and movies. They liked the first two volumes, and they will like the third. One difference here is that the heroes of different shows can guest star in each other's adventures, without worrying about network and sponsor conflicts.
                  * Leading off the book is a long story, called a "novelette" after the style of old pulp fiction magazines, "Jack Armstrong and the Horde of Montezuma". It not only features the All-American Boy, Jack, but his companion from the afternoon hour of juvenile thrillers, Tom Mix "America's Favorite Cowboy".
Along the way, Jack also has the help of the legendary private detective, Nick Carter, and there are a couple of cryptic references to Sherlock Holmes. Do these heroes find the lost treasure of the great Aztec chief? It would be a shorter story if they did not, one can assume. Jim Harmon has been writing about these radio characters for forty years, since his first book "The Great Radio Heroes" (also available on Amazon). He is also the editor for the whole book, and his touch is apparent in many of the other stories, including one full collaboration with Jon Swartz where another cowboy (turned aviator) Gene Autry meets the young flier, Jimmie Allen, in World War II skies. * Award winning science fiction and mystery writer, Richard A. Lupoff, contributes a story about two of the most mysterious figures from radio, the Mysterious Traveler and the Whistler. Dawn Kovner deals with another pair concerned with mystery, Casey, Crime Photographer and the Man in Black from Suspense. The foremost name in detection, Sherlock Holmes, is paired off against Raffles in a story by Gareth Tiley. Lighter takes on detectives are apparent where Johnny Doll visits Duffy's Tavern by Steve Thompson, and where Jack Benny meets Richard Diamond by Michael Lennah. * Outright comedy is on hand when Fibber McGee and Molly try marriage counceling on the Bickersons, by Barbara Gratz, and when Lum and Abner encouter Mary Noble, Backstage Wife, by John Leasure. Other characters include Vic and Sade, Just Plain Bill, Halls of Ivy, Captain Midnight, Sky King, Matt Dillon, Paladin, and Buck Jones by authors Steve Kallis, T. Wayne Clay, George Fowler, Martin Grams Jr., Rick Phillips, Justin Felix and Ted Kneebone. There is so much here that anyone would have to like at least half the book and really love one story or two. Topping it all off is a brief introduction giving his blessing to the project by the greatest dramatist of the golden era of radio, Norman Corwin.
There's a nice cover by artist Bobb Lynes.

3 out of 5 stars A must read for radio buffs........2003-01-28

The concept is new and exciting. Fans of radio will enjoy reading about charactors one hasn't heard from in awhile. I really enjoyed the "Ma Perkins" story as we don't hear much about this truly great show. This book is a great way for non radio people to be introduced to the lost art of radio soaps.
                  A must read.

4 out of 5 stars Great Concept and Stories.......2003-01-15

As an OTR enthusiAst, I recognized all of the shows in this collection and feel that the editor has done an admirable job of pulling together a representative group of series. Though the stories all capture the flavor and typical plots of the series, the writing is wildly uneven (in terms of mechanics, not plot or characterization). The standouts are the Dimension X, Frontier Gentleman, Johnny Dollar, and Pat Novak stories. These are well written stories that capture the programs very well.

                  4 out of 5 stars It's About Time.......2003-01-14

Prior to television, the dominant entertainment medium was Old-Time Radio (OTR). In many bookstores, there are tapes and CDs with recordings of a few of the more famous shows. But to understand what it was like to listen to the shows back then, this volume provides a good insight.

During the course of an evening, listeners would usually tune between stations, getting a variety of different shows, from comedy to mystery, to adventure. The volume provides a sampling of the shows usually heard during an evening or two.

The editor chose for his collection programs that had their origins on radio. Thus, shows like "The Shadow," "The Thin Man," and "Terry and the Pirates" are not represented here, since they were based on pulp magazine, book, and comic-strip characters. But the shows that are included are very representative of the medium at its peak.

For someone who lived through the era, the stories can be treasured for their nostalgic aspect. But to those new to OTR, these stories provide a good introduction to the world of old-time radio.

[N.B. As the author of one of the stories, I'm not going to review that one. However, the rest of the stories were new to me, and I'm commenting on those alone.]

5 out of 5 stars Better Than I Had Hoped.......2003-01-08

This is a splendid book for those who love the genre of radio drama that flourished during the Golden Age. The concept is quite simple: present short stories based on some of the shows from that era. I was a bit skeptical about how well Old Time Radio which was heavily dialogue driven and written in script form would transfer over to the short story format. I think this group of writers pulled it off in magnificent fashion.

It does help to know that Jack Webb starred in Pat Novak for Hire or what Bob Bailey sounded like as Johnny Dollar. The remarkable thing about this book is that the authors have managed to capture the essence of the programs so well that I could swear I actually heard the actors delivering their lines. This is a wonderful tribute to the shows that inspired the stories and a darned good read.

If you are hesitating to order this book because you, too, have doubts about how well the shows will translate to short story form, cast those doubts aside and order your copy now.
