This book is the second edition of a successful, self-contained text for those students and readers interested in learning hypersonic flow and high-temperature gas dynamics. Like the first edition, it assumes no prior familiarity with either subject on the part of the reader. If you have never studied hypersonic and/or high-temperature gas dynamics before, and if you have never worked extensively in the area, then this book is for you. On the other hand, if you have worked and/or are working in these areas, and you want a cohesive presentation of the fundamentals, a development of important theory and techniques, a discussion of the salient results with emphasis on the physical aspects, and a presentation of modern thinking in these areas, then this book is also for you. In other words, this book is designed for two roles: 1) as an effective classroom text that can be used with ease by the instructor, and understood with ease by the student; and 2) as a viable, professional working tool for engineers, scientists, and managers who have any contact in their jobs with hypersonic and/or high-temperature flow. Because of its success, most of the first edition has been carried over to the second edition with the addition of much new material.
This second Edition has updated figures and data to compliment the presentation and discussion of the fundamentals. New to this edition are some educational tools that the author has found successful in previous books, namely the inclusion of: (1) previews of each chapter written in plain language to inform the reader why it is important to read and understand the material in the chapter, to highlight the important aspects , and to whip up the readerÂ’s passion to consume the chapter; (2) design examples scattered throughout the book to illustrate the application of the fundamentals to the design of hypersonic vehicles and ground test facilities; and (3) roadmaps at the beginning of each chapter to guide the reader comfortably through the material. New subjects discussed in the Second Edition include shock-shock interactions, hypersonic waveriders, and aspects of hypersonic propulsion devices, always in light of the fundamentals emphasized in the main part of the book.
Finally, this book is for you – the reader – to take you through an enjoyable tour of the world of Hypersonic and High Temperature Gasdynamics.

an excellent first book for high temp gas dynamics.......2001-04-20
This book in conjunction with Anderson's "Modern Compressible Flow with Historical Perspective" will give you and excellent fundamental background in high temp gas dynamics. I think the third section alone of this book (which introduces stastical mechanics, kinetic theory, chemically reacting flows, equilibrium and nonequilibrium flows) is worth the price.

I just finished reading an old edition, whihc is late 80's and it's incredible, I can't wait to get this new edition. If you like aerodynamics and are interested in space re-entry vehicles, for sure you should have this book in your personal library.

High Temperature Gas Dynamics is a class-tested primer for students, scientists and engineers who would like to have a basic understanding of the physics and the behaviour of high-temperature gases. It is a valuable tool for astrophysicists as well. The first chapters treat the basic principles of quantum and statistical mechanics and how to derive thermophysical properties from them. Special topics are included that are rarely found in other textbooks, such as the thermophysical and transport properties of multi-temperature gases and a novel method to compute radiative transfer. Furthermore, collision processes between different particles are discussed. Separate chapters deal with the production of high-temperature gases and with electrical emission in plasmas, as well as related diagnostic techniques.

Vs 44, A great but under utilized Flying Boat.......2005-02-15
The VS 44 was and is an under-appreciated plane.In the late 30's, it lost out to the far inferior Consolidated Coranado for the Navy contract for a patrol bomber, mainly because Consolidated had more military experience. When the Navy realized it needed flying boat transports, they again chose the Coranado, even though Sikorsky had more long range transport experience. Pan Am passed it over for the larger, but shorter ranged, Boeing B314. It was ressurected by American Overseas Airline buying 3 in 1941. During 1941-1942, it was the only plane that could fly the Atlantic,loaded, nonstop in both directions.
This book presents info on both the planes' history and the very fine restoration in the Bradley museum near Hartford CT. There is a table in the appendix that that lists the remarkable long range flights in the early 40's and another that comepares its load/range characteristics favorably to the B314. I wish the author had expanded on these tables, writing about the wind and load conditons for these long range flights, and whether the B314's larger volume compensated commercially for its weight/range limitations. Overall, this is a very fine book on an under utilized very fine Flying Boat.

Is Harry on the boat? Yes he most certainly is! This book, not for the prim and proper, encaptures all the thrills and spills of a young persons holiday abroad. The storyline, or lack of, only adds to the overall flavour of the book.
The book focuses on the lives of some holiday reps that are currently working in Ibiza. The detailing of their activities is superb and really captivates the reader. Colin Butt's portrayal of young people and what they get up to on their holiday is spot on. He is a realistic writer, who is definitely in tune with a young person's mind. He knows what people go on holiday for and how they plan to get it.
The story, although slightly non-existent in places, still manages to keep the reader enthralled and waiting to find out what happens next. His descriptions of sexual activity are vivid and at times comical. His terminology for such activities are fantastic and had me in stitches!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this whilst I myself was on holiday. It made the perfect read whilst sitting by the pool! A thoroughly enjoyable read if you want something light-hearted, entertaining and X-rated!

I thought Colin Butts book describing life as a rep on Ibiza was enjoyable and havn't yet seen the film but on the strength of this book, would make it a date.

This book is brillinat. A brillinat laugh and a true insight to teh life of a rep in ibiza! I thought the book was well written and well portrayed! Also the whole book is based on true storys non of it is made up stuff that the author thought of!
I have recently watched the Movie which was full of laughs but not nearly as good as this book!

Go buy this book.
It is one of the funniest things I have ever read. I was a rep last season, and the book tells the thruth... Seen from a mans perspective......
Anyway, wicked, brilliant, excellent, fantastic book.... Made we want to go back for another season, cause I really miss it!!!!!

It's easy to dismiss this novel as summer trash. And against more worthy titles it might be considered so. Only the words "critically acclaimed" often mean something is dull and no-one bought it. This book is fun. The attention centres around Brad, a first year rep with Young, Free and Single. Of course he has his fair share of sexual conquests, and there is the "competition" amongst the staff as to which rep is the most promiscuous. It is set in Ibiza after all. But it is by no means a dumb sex and sun novel. Colin Butts has done an excellent job of filling us in on the characters, the shy Lorraine, the vain Mario. All the time the plot ticks along, and there is a plot. Back at head office there are financial irregularities about to be exposed, which conclude with the managers descending on the resort. I read this book while in Gran Canaria and thoroughly enjoyed it.
