Gigacycle Fatigue in Mechanical Practice (Mechanical Engineering (Marcel Dekker))
ASIN: 0080446914 |
Book Description
Dr Theodore Nicholas ran the High Cycle Fatigue Program for the US Air Force between 1995 and 2003 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and is one of the worlds leading authorities on the subject, having authored over 250 papers in leading archival journals and books.
Bringing his plethora of expertise to this book, Dr Nicholas discusses the subject of high cycle fatigue (HCF) from an engineering viewpoint in response to a series of HCF failures in the USAF and the concurrent realization that HCF failures in general were taking place universally in both civilian and military engines.
Topic covered include:
- Constant life diagrams
- Fatigue limits under combined LCF and HCF
- Notch fatigue under HCF conditions
- Foreign object damage (FOD)
* Brings years of the Author's US Air Force experience in high cycle fatigue together in one text
* Discusses HCF in the context of recent international military and civilian engine failures
Book Description
This volume emphasizes fundamental concepts, both on the development of mathematical models of fracture phenomena and on the analysis of these models. Cases involving stress waves impinging on cracks, tractions suddenly applied to the faces of cracks, and rapid crack growth and arrest are considered in detail. Most of the work is concerned with the behavior of nominally elastic materials, but available results on elastic-plastic and elastic-viscoplastic materials are included. Connections to experimental results and to applications in structural mechanics, seismology, and materials science are noted whenever possible.
Book Description
Providing a basic foundation for advanced graduate study and research in the mechanics of solids, this treatise develops systematically the fundamentals of finite inelastic deformations of heterogeneous materials. The book combines the mathematical precision of solid mechanics with the physics-based micro-structural knowledge of materials science, presenting a coherent picture of finite inelastic deformation of single and polycrystalline metals.

Book Description
Much of the current interest in shock compression of porous solids stems from the desire to bond hard, refractory powders into strong and dense solids. However, while much is known about the effects of shock compression on monolithic materials, the unusual physical and chemical processes that take place when a porous medium is shocked have been little studied thus far. This volume -- with contributions by leading researchers in condensed matter physics, physical chemistry, metallurgy, mechanics, and materials science -- begins to address that gap. The focus is on heterogeneous deformation mechanisms, nonequilibrium thermodynamics, and chemical processes. The contributions discuss such topics as modeling the complex interplay of thermal, mechanical, and chemical processes; experimental data on pore collapse and their interpretation; and synthesis of new materials through shock-induced chemical reactions. By presenting not only the most recent results, but also the open questions that remain, these essays convey the excitement of developing a scientific basis for understanding shock compression of highly porous solids. Topics covered include > Shock Compression Science in Highly Porous Solids > Shock Loading of Porous High Explosives > Continuum Mixture Modeling of Reactive Porous Media > Two-Phase Media Model of Shock Compression with Chemical reaction > Constitutive Modeling of Shock-Induced Reactions in Powder Mixtures > Discrete-element Modeling of Shock Processes in Powders

Book Description
This work brings together the results, information and data that emerged from an international cooperative project, DECOVALEX, 1992-1995. This project was concerned with the mathematical and experimental studies of coupled thermo(T) -hydro(H) -mechanical(M) processes in fractured media related to radioactive waste disposal.
The book presents, for the first time, the systematic formulation of mathematical models of the coupled T-H-M processes of fractured media, their validation against theoretical bench-mark tests, and experimental studies at both laboratory and field scales. It also presents, for the first time, a comprehensive analysis of continuum, and discrete approaches to the study of the problems of (as well as a complete description of), the computer codes applied to the studies.
The first two chapters provide a conceptual introduction to the coupled T-H-M processes in fractured media and the DECOVALEX project. The next seven chapters give a state-of-the-art survey of the constitutive models of rock fractures and formulation of coupled T-H-M phenomena with continuum and discontinuum approaches, and associated numerical methods. A study on the three generic Bench-Mark Test problems and six Test Case problems of laboratory and field experiments are reported in chapters 10 to 18. Chapter 19 contains lessons learned during the project.
The research contained in this book will be valuable for designers, practising engineers and national waste management officials who are concerned with planning, design and performance, and safety assessments of radioactive waste repositories. Researchers and postgraduate students working in this field will also find the book of particular relevance.

Book Description
The last two decades have seen considerable changes in the way fractures, including dynamic fractures, have been analysed. Conventional fracture mechanics approaches have slowly given way to more sophisticated and predictive ones including cohesive zone or traction-separation models. Popular for their simplicity and the ease with which they can be implemented into numerical codes, these need to prescribe the tractions holding the fracturing surfaces against the separation distance between them. It was thought that the main parameter of the model was the area under the traction-separation curve corresponding to fracture energy, while the shape of the curve would be of minor importance. However, as attempts were made to model complex problems it also became clear that the entire shape of the curve is often very important. Furthermore, the traction-separation laws were found to depend on constraint conditions apart from rate and temperature. The most important question for the fracture community pursuing the use of cohesive zone models should be how to obtain these laws.
Covering various aspects of dynamic fractures this book contains state-of-the-art contributions from leading scientists in the field of crack dynamics.

Book Description
This book provides an up-to-date knowledge on theory and experimental results of rate-dependent fracture processes in metallic materials. The objective is to expose the current status of a growing branch of fracture mechanics called generally "Dynamic Fracture". Crack dynamics takes into account not only the effects of inertia but also rate sensitivity of a material under consideration. This volume has been prepared by four leading authorities in fracture dynamics: D.R. Curran, J.F. Kalthoff, J.R. Klepaczko and F. Nilsson. A broad range of problem is covered: dynamic fracture theory, application of dynamic fracture mechanics, dynamic crack inition and microstatistical fracture mechanics in dynamic fracture. The book in its present format may serve as a text supplement in lecturing on fracture mechanics. On the other hand, it may serve as an instructional aid in engineering of fracture prevention.

Book Description
Offers practical coverage of vibration stresses and stress-induced displacements, isolation of sensitive components, and evaluation of elastic instability, fatigue and fracture as potential failure modes that arise in mechanical designs and aerospace. The approach taken is particularly useful in the early design stage--the physical problem is defined via known paramaters and a methodology is given for determining the unknown quantities and relating them to specified limiting values and failure modes to obtain an acceptable design. Many of the calculations can be performed on a PC or programmable calculator.

Book Description
Would you deep-freeze a dying loved one in anticipation of a medical cure? Alf Kravitz makes that decision on behalf of his dying wife Tillie. He and Tillie survived the Nazi Holocaust and every day alive is precious. Little does Alf realize that the "Institute of Igloology" is nothing more than taxi-driver Sammy Fitzgerald's scheme to make money by stowing the deceased in his friend Barney Lewis' basement Frigidaire. Hold on for the wild ride as an alliance of strangers combine to keep Tillie from entering Heaven... until she teaches her husband that it is natural and right to Die with Dignity.
Customer Reviews:
Notable debut.......2002-01-15
In summary, this debut novel is a very readable story, one which you'll most likely storm through, but it is also a notable book to which there is more than seems to be at the outset.
FREEZING TILLIE IS HOT.......2001-06-26
Not since John Kennedy Toole's "Confederacy of Dunces" have I read a book that I consider to be actually funny! Gary Barnes lets his comic imagination run rampant in this story about Alf and his octogenarian wife, Tillie, who is not so gradually losing her body organs to cancer. He does not want to lose her at such a tender age and so enlists the aid of the miracle workers at the "Institute of Igloology" where she will be tenderly cared for while in a state of "suspendered aviation". Little does he know that the Institute is the latest hare-brained concept of Sammy, a taxi driver and slayer of the English language, and Barney, an auto mechanic who longs to save enough money to buy his own garage. Barney's wife has left him (but not his furniture) simply because he tried to drown her in his Australian Monster Wriggler Worm Farm trough. Barney is now living alone in his basement, sleeping on a recycled backseat of an old Cadillac. He has it all: Twinkies, beer, cigarettes and an empty refrigerator. What better conditiions for storing the newly, or nearly, deceased until such time as a "cure" can be found. Of course, not everyone in this town is as urbane, sophisticated and farseeing as Sammy and Barney. Among other characters you wouldn't want to live anywhere near but can't read enough about, is Miss Nicholas, a third grade teacher who thinks education can be battered into children with a hickory paddle, the same paddle she has used on three generations of students. She writes daily to her future, unknown biographer who will finally and deservedly bring Miss N's millions of chapters of glorious prose on the subject of being an educator to the attention of the waiting world. What the future does hold for her is not what she, nor any rational person, could possibly expect. It is, however, perfect justice in an imperfect world! I was a little hesitant when I heard of this book. I was afraid it would be a poor attempt at recreating Toole's "Ignatius". How wrong I was! I started reading this book by flashlight in a tent in my backyard and finished it while undergoing an extremely disgusting medical procedure. To say "I coudn't put it down" is an understatement. This is Mr. Barnes first published work of fiction. For my sake and yours, I hope it is not his last. I was hoping for a sequel to "Tillie" before I had even finished it. It's that good! I have no stake in this book other than to know that I can pick it up when I need a laugh! Trust me! The check is NOT in the mail, but this is a book that will have you laughing out loud by the third page and reading bits to the neighbors and total strangers just to be able to share the joy! If this book was any funnier, Mr. Barnes would very likely be arrested for disturbing the peace. My sincere compliments and many thanks to the author!
Freezing Tillie.......2001-02-19
This is the funniest book I have ever read. I stayed up all night reading it from cover to cover. I will be reading it again and again. I can't recommend this book enough.
